February marks a turning point for South African hardware retailers as local market dynamics reshape the industry landscape. While the construction sector faces headwinds with material costs rising 1.8% year-on-year, homegrown retailers are proving their resilience.
Cashbuild continues its aggressive expansion despite tough economic conditions, opening three new stores and planning further growth into Namibia and Malawi.
Meanwhile, Builders Warehouse’s 117-store footprint across Southern Africa highlights the strength of regional scale, with its multi-format strategy effectively meeting diverse customer needs. Moreover, amid anticipated growth in
the DIY market, it remains to be seen how South African retailers position themselves for the anticipated 3.5% annual growth from 2026-2029.
In this issue, our Retailer’s Guide focusses on Storage and Organisation (page 29); read up on Siniat’s smart drywall systems (page 38) and Timbuild is the latest retailer to partner with Skillcraft on its Ingco shop-in-shop concept (page 70).

At some stage, though, as a retailer, you might have been wondering whether joining a franchise could be your next step. There are many valid reasons that idea might take root. Perhaps you are planning to open another store and want the advantage of instant brand recognition. Maybe you are thinking about succession planning and realise that franchised stores often sell more easily. Or you could be ready to take your business to the next level but know that it’s time to have the structure, support, and buying power of a larger team behind you.
You may be feeling the pressure of big retail groups crowding your space and see that there’s strength in being part of something bigger.
Whatever your motivation, choosing the right franchise can be daunting — the options seem endless. Flip through this very magazine and you’ll find countless franchise opportunities, each promising success, support, and growth. So, where do you start?
The answer is simple: start with you. No one knows your business, your staff, or your customers better than you do. The key is to understand your needs and priorities before you evaluate potential franchise partners. Ask yourself the right questions — and then weigh each opportunity against your answers.
For years, retailers have probably looked at franchise groups and corporate stores as ‘more of the same’. Retailers have invested years in building their brands, earning their customers’ trust, and establishing a strong reputation in their communities — often through sheer hard work and determination.
Here are a few questions to help you get started:
• Do I want to retain entrepreneurial autonomy, or am I comfortable following set operational guidelines?
• Would I like to keep my current store name, or am I open to a full rebrand?
• Am I happy to buy through a centralised distribution system, or do I prefer to maintain my own supplier relationships?
• Do I want to add or expand into a specialist category such as paint, board cutting, or cabinetry — and which franchise offers the best training and setup?
• Am I comfortable paying a percentage of turnover, or would a fixed monthly fee suit me better?
• What level of marketing support do I expect?
• How much am I willing to invest in a store revamp?
Beyond these practical questions lies one crucial — and often overlooked — consideration: Does the franchise align with my business culture?
Culture fit is a make-or-break factor. You want to join a group of like-minded people who share your values and business philosophy.
• Is your staff like family, or simply part of the operation?
• Do you pride yourself on personal service and community relationships?
• Is your business customer-centric at its core?
• Do you thrive on collaboration, or prefer to work independently?
• Do you value innovation and continuous improvement?
Once you have answered these questions, draw up two lists: your non-negotiables and your nice-to-haves. You might not find a 100% match, but knowing where you are flexible — and where you are not — will make your decision clearer.
Joining a franchise is a major commitment that can redefine your business future. Take the time to understand your own goals, strengths, and vision first. That self-awareness is the foundation for choosing the right franchise for you — one that supports your growth, respects your independence, and strengthens your legacy in the hardware retail industry.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Adele Baard is the operations manager for TimBuild South Africa and has been involved in the hardware and building material retail industry for more than 30 years.

Globally, retail has been reshaped by shifting consumer expectations, technology, sustainability, new business models, and emerging market dynamics.
For New Africa Developments (NAD), a retail-focused property developer, staying competitive means building a more inclusive, future-fit retail landscape that expands access, supports economic mobility, and strengthens community ties.
“We view retail as a developmental tool and a catalyst for jobs, entrepreneurship, and regional progress. Our goal is to build shopping centres that are commercially resilient and meaningfully transformative,” says NAD director Robin Houghton.
In South Africa, the sector is evolving as decentralisation accelerates, nonmetro retail nodes grow, and retailers gain confidence in secondary markets. Consumers are prioritising convenience, value, and safety, while shopping centres increasingly function as lifestyle hubs rather than purely transactional spaces.

NAD’s focus on secondary cities and underserved urban areas reflects a deliberate positioning in a niche market aligned with changing demand. These regions, hold much of South Africa’s untapped retail potential.
“Secondary cities and underserved urban nodes are home to expanding consumer bases with growing purchasing power, yet they have historically lacked quality retail infrastructure. NAD is committed to bridging this gap, unlocking demand, uplifting communities, and driving equitable growth.”
Where retail development once centred heavily on major metros, investment patterns have shifted. Regional and township retail nodes are gaining appeal as economic shifts, population growth and improved mobility networks transform where consumers live, spend and seek value.
“Modern retail expectations are no longer
confined to metros — communities want quality closer to home. Investing now enables developers to respond to this structural change and deliver long-term value for both retailers and residents.”
Houghton says true transformation lies in expanding access by bringing quality retail to communities historically excluded from major economic centres. “It supports local business ownership, fosters employment, and builds infrastructure that strengthens regional economies. Our portfolio demonstrates our ongoing commitment to this mission.”
To deliver on this mandate, NAD pursues functional, sustainable, and value-driven innovation. Centres such as Jumbo Mall, a new development in eMalahleni Mpumalanga scheduled for opening in March 2026 illustrate this approach, with contemporary design and smart technology reflecting a long-term strategy aimed at future-fit development.

Design choices and tenant mix are evaluated for their long-term community benefit and operational feasibility. In this way, innovation becomes a tool for practical progress rather than a conceptual exercise and Jumbo Mall offers a tangible case study of technology at work, says Houghton.
Jumbo Mall represents the next evolution of NAD’s development model. “It advances our approach by combining behavioural insight, sophisticated design and a tenant mix that mirrors the needs and aspirations of residents. It marks our shift from building retail centres to creating holistic lifestyle destinations that anchor community life,” says Houghton.
The centre sets a benchmark for regional retail through destination architecture, intuitive access, and a mix of national, regional, and local retailers. It offers metropolitan quality in a regional setting, raising expectations of what township and secondary-city retail can deliver.
Technology is a key differentiator. Jumbo Mall features a 140m² LED screen on its main façade — among the largest in the country and a high-definition entertainment zone in the food court. Ultimately, three major LED screens totalling 300m² will support content and engagement across the development.
Sustainability measures include LED lighting, efficient air-conditioning, Propelair toilets cutting water use by up to 70% and a smart building management system that monitors performance in real time.
Practical innovation extends to custom benches with integrated workspaces, giving entrepreneurs and students a place to work and reinforcing Jumbo Mall’s role as a community hub.
“Jumbo Mall exemplifies our belief that every community deserves access to worldclass retail environments. It reflects our disciplined approach, data-led site selection, strong tenant partnerships, and integrated design that uplift regional economies. It is a physical expression of our commitment to quality, relevance, and long-term impact.”
Location was critical. Research into demographics, income flows, mobility patterns, and stakeholder insight identified eMalahleni as a fast-growing area with strong commuter movement and clear demand for a regional centre. The community had been signalling this need which Jumbo Mall will deliver on.
Learnings from earlier developments, Mams Mall and Acornhoek Mall underscored the value of cultural sensitivity, transport mapping and curated retail mixes aligned to local rhythms. Jumbo Mall builds on this intelligence

to meet present needs and future aspirations.
“Secondary-market consumers are evolving rapidly. They want convenience, safety, and authentic choice, but also environments that feel intentional and reflective of their lifestyle.” Jumbo Mall shows that when a development is grounded in research and aligned with community needs, consumers reward it with loyalty and engagement.
Over the next 10 years, NAD expects Jumbo Mall to transform how eMalahleni shops, interacts and grows while becoming a landmark, a meeting place, an economic engine, and a source of pride for the city.
Houghton says developers play a pivotal role in SA’s economy by driving inclusive growth. “Our responsibility goes beyond constructing buildings, we create ecosystems that stimulate trade, support entrepreneurship and deliver long-term value to communities.”
Over the next decade, NAD aims to reshape perceptions of regional and township retail by developing centres that are economically catalytic, contemporary, and socially meaningful. Its focus remains on high-growth secondary cities, expanding township nodes and emerging urban corridors areas which hold the next wave of retail potential.
Tomorrow’s shoppers expect seamless convenience, meaningful experiences and integrated services. NAD’s future developments will prioritise smarter mobility, lifestyle-led design, technology-enabled convenience, and tenant mixes that reflect changing aspirations, particularly among younger consumers.
For developers entering secondary markets, Houghton advises listening first, understanding lived realities, building for longevity, prioritise access and partner with those committed to sustainable, inclusive development.
Success for NAD is when a centre becomes part of daily life — measured through jobs, entrepreneurial opportunity, improved convenience, and regional vitality. “Each development reaffirms our belief that worldclass retail should be accessible to all communities,” adds Houghton.

Few household disasters cause as much chaos as a burst geyser. In a matter of minutes, water can pour through ceilings, ruin carpets, and short-circuit electronics. It is stressful, costly, and almost always happens when least expected.
But quick thinking in those first moments can limit the damage. Here is a practical step-by-step guide shared by Kwikot, that retailers can share with their customers for them to know exactly what to do when their geyser gives in.
1
Switch off the power
Safety comes first. Advise your customers to head straight to the distribution board (DB box) and turn off the circuit marked ‘geyser’. If it is not labelled, switch off the main power supply until an electrician can confirm which circuit is which. Water and electricity are a dangerous mix. This simple step prevents further risk of electric shock or fire.
2
Cutting off the water flow is the next priority the power has been switched off. Every litre that escapes adds to the damage, so the faster you act, the better.
Start by locating the stopcock valve, usually found near the geyser itself, along the supply pipe that feeds into the unit. In some homes, especially newer buildings, or apartments, it may be positioned outside along an exterior wall or close to the water meter.
Turn the valve clockwise to shut off the flow completely. If the area is unsafe, flooded, or the valve isn’t easily accessible, close your home’s main water supply instead. This is typically found at the boundary of your property, near the street or garden tap.
If your customer is unsure where either valve is, advise them to plan ahead and take time now to locate them and show other members of your household. In an emergency, every second counts, and knowing exactly where to turn the water off can make the difference between minor damage and major repair work.

Advise your customers to relieve pressure in the tank by opening the draincock at the bottom of the geyser and attach a hosepipe to guide the water safely outside. Warn the customer to be cautious as the water may still be hot. Even partial draining helps reduce ceiling damage and makes clean-up easier. If you cannot get access to the geyser then open a few hot taps, this will relieve the pressure too.
Before calling for help, customers should take photos and short videos of the burst geyser, visible leaks and any damaged areas or belongings. Save everything on the phone or cloud storage. This evidence speeds up insurance claims and helps contractors assess the full extent of the problem.
Call your insurer and a licensed plumber
Once the immediate risk is under control, the next step is to contact an insurance provider or a registered plumber. A professional will inspect the installation, identify the cause, and ensure the replacement meets national standards.
Understanding what went wrong helps prevent a repeat incident. Geysers are pressurised systems that work hard every day and several factors can cause them to fail over time.
The most common include:
AGE AND CORROSION
Inside every geyser is a steel tank that stores hot water under pressure. Over the years, constant heating and cooling cause metal fatigue and rust. If the protective coating wears away or the sacrificial anode (a small metal rod that attracts corrosion) is not replaced, the tank eventually weakens and bursts.
Water pressure that is too high puts excessive strain on the tank and connecting pipes. A faulty or blocked pressure control valve means the geyser can not release excess pressure, which can cause the cylinder to start leaking.

Homes with fluctuating municipal supply are especially vulnerable to leaking cylinders.
Improper installation, such as incorrect pipe fittings, missing valves, or non-compliance with safety standards, shortens a geyser’s lifespan and can invalidate warranty or insurance claims. It also increases the risk of leaks, overheating, or structural failure.
Even a small drip or rumbling noise can signal a bigger problem inside the tank. Ignoring regular servicing allows minor wear and tear to escalate, eventually leading to a burst. Routine checks catch these warning signs early and prevent costly emergencies.
A burst geyser is not always avoidable, but good maintenance dramatically reduces the risk.
A few proactive steps can save thousands in repairs and keep your household running smoothly:
• Service your geyser every two-three years: A qualified plumber will inspect valves, seals, and electrical connections to ensure everything functions safely and efficiently. Early detection of corrosion or leaks can prevent full system failure.
• Test the pressure control valve regularly: This valve manages the water pressure entering your geyser. If it is faulty or clogged, pressure builds up inside the tank. Testing it ensures the system can safely release excess pressure when needed.
• Replace the sacrificial anode when worn: The anode protects the tank from rust by attracting corrosive minerals in the water. Over time it dissolves and needs replacement. Without it, corrosion attacks the tank walls directly.
• Keep drip trays and overflow pipes clear: These components direct excess water safely outside during leaks or pressure release. If they are blocked or incorrectly fitted, water may pool in the ceiling instead, causing damage.
Regular inspections and timely servicing can extend a geyser’s life by years, improve energy efficiency, and maintain safety standards, protecting both your home and your peace of mind.
A burst geyser can feel like a small disaster, but it does not have to turn into one. Knowing where your switches and valves are, keeping emergency contacts close and scheduling regular maintenance go a long way towards protecting your home and your peace of mind. Preparation is the difference between a quick fix and a full-scale clean-up. 4 3 5

Local hardware retailers are embracing AI-powered stock prediction and IoT-enabled tracking systems to navigate economic pressures, supply chain challenges, and the growing DIY movement in post-pandemic South Africa.

Independent hardware retailers in areas like Soweto, Mitchell's Plain, and Mamelodi are adopting affordable cloud-based inventory management platforms that cost a fraction of traditional enterprise solutions. These systems use South Africa's improved mobile infrastructure to provide sophisticated inventory control previously available only to large chains.
Mobile-first inventory solutions working on smartphones and tablets allow smaller retailers to track stock levels, manage suppliers, and process orders efficiently. With improved power stability, these systems can operate continuously while providing backup functionality during occasional load reduction periods.
Hardware retailers serving township markets have embraced mobile-first inventory solutions that use South Africa's extensive 4G coverage and include offline functionality for areas with intermittent connectivity. These systems often integrate with popular local payment methods like SnapScan, Yoco, and various bank apps. WhatsApp Business integration allows customers to check stock availability and place orders remotely, particularly valuable for customers who prefer to confirm availability before making trips to stores. This digital engagement has proven especially popular among younger consumers driving the DIY trend.
For retailers, a digital inventory system can enable closer integration with manufacturers and suppliers. Real-time demand data helps these suppliers optimise production schedules, while retailers benefit from improved stock availability and reduced working capital requirements.
Progressive hardware retailers now share aggregated demand forecasts with local suppliers, creating more efficient supply chains that support local manufacturing while improving inventory turnover and reducing carrying costs.
South Africa's improved power stability has enabled hardware retailers to invest in sophisticated inventory management systems with confidence. Modern cloudbased platforms with local data centres in
Johannesburg and Cape Town provide the reliability needed for real-time inventory management while ensuring POPIA compliance for customer data protection.
Edge computing devices process transactions locally for enhanced speed, while improved internet infrastructure supports realtime integration with suppliers and enables advanced analytics that were previously impractical due to connectivity limitations.
• Start with high-impact categories: Focus initial digital transformation efforts on hightheft items, seasonal products, and imported goods where accurate tracking provides immediate ROI and margin protection
• Choose scalable cloud solutions: Prioritise systems that can grow with your business and integrate easily with local suppliers and payment providers popular in South African markets
• Integrate with the local ecosystem: Connect inventory systems with major local suppliers to automate reordering and improve stock availability
• Consider multi-language support: Implement systems that support local languages and integrate with popular South African payment methods and mobile money platforms
• Plan for multi-channel growth: Choose solutions that support both physical stores and online sales channels as eCommerce continues growing in South Africa.
Cloud-based solutions eliminate the need for expensive on-premises servers, making advanced inventory management accessible to smaller retailers. Improved rand stability has made imported technology more predictable in cost, while growing local software development capabilities mean customisation

for South African conditions is increasingly viable and affordable.
Government digitisation incentives and skills development programmes provide added support for hardware retailers looking to modernise their operations while contributing to local digital transformation and job creation goals.
Digital inventory systems directly impact customer satisfaction through improved product availability and faster service. Realtime stock visibility enables accurate online inventory displays and efficient order fulfilment for click-and-collect services that have become popular among South African consumers. Integration with local delivery networks and pickup points helps hardware retailers serve customers across diverse geographic areas, from urban centres to rural communities, expanding their effective market reach.
The next wave of innovation will include deeper integration with South African logistics networks and augmented reality systems helping customers visualise products in their homes. IoT sensors will monitor environmental conditions in stores to optimise storage of temperature-sensitive products, while advanced analytics will provide insights into regional demand patterns. As South African consumers become more digitally sophisticated and the DIY trend continues growing, hardware retailers that invest in digital inventory transformation will be best positioned to capture emerging opportunities and serve the evolving needs of local markets.

Cape Town’s streets, coastlines, and community spaces are set to become brighter, bolder, and far more meaningful thanks to a powerful new public art initiative dedicated to saving one of South Africa’s most iconic species: the African penguin.

‘Popping Up Penguins’, the brainchild of renowned artists MAK1ONE and CareCreative of the Handcantrol360 Crew, is transforming the city into an open-air gallery. Vivid murals are ‘popping up’ – each delivering a message South Africans can no longer afford to ignore: African penguins are rapidly racing toward extinction and could vanish from the wild by 2035.
’THE SHOW MUST GO ON’
Muizenberg: A Penguin Has Popped Up!
A new penguin has just ‘popped up’ in Muizenberg, marking the second mural to appear across Cape Town as part of the Popping Up Penguins project. These playful yet urgent artworks are swimming their way across city walls – from Boulders to the CBD – bringing the plight of the African penguin to the forefront of public consciousness.
The project highlights the escalating

threats facing the species, including overfishing, oil pollution, habitat loss, predation, and climate change.
Muizenberg-based artist CareCreative, Claire Homewood, has poured passion, time, and resources into the creation of this mural, standing in solidarity with the critically endangered birds.
“This project intends to bring awareness to the urgent state of the African Penguin and serves as a reminder of the work needed to bring ourselves back into balance with nature before we say goodbye to our friends forever.” says Homewood.
The mural’s backdrop is the iconic Masque, a beloved community institution recently celebrating 65 years.
“Following The Masque's milestone 65th birthday serving the community by providing a platform for inclusive, creative engagement, we are proud to mark the occasion by uniting with our partners. It recognises both the extraordinary natural environment around us and the significance of art to inspire us in our daily lives,” says The Masque chairperson Daniel Enticott.
Much appreciation is extended to The Masque, COCT Coastal Management Department, Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation, Ocean Finance Company, Waddle On Socks, Coral Nomdo, and Nina Karoo Hofmeyer for helping bring this meaningful mural to life.

This Paint with Purpose movement is made possible through the generous support of Excelsior Paints, who has proudly donated all the paint needed to bring these striking murals to life. Their contribution includes specialised concrete primer to ensure longevity on public surfaces, along with approximately 80 litres of high-quality, vibrant colour mixes that help the artists create imagery powerful enough to stop pedestrians in their tracks.
For Excelsior Paints, the project is a natural extension of the company’s longstanding commitment to uplifting communities, empowering local creatives, and driving awareness around urgent environmental challenges.
“Art has a unique ability to start conversations,” says the team at Excelsior Paints. “If these murals help even a few more people understand what’s at stake and get involved in conservation efforts, then we’re proud to have played a part.”
The ‘Popping Up Penguins’ project is a country-wide call to action. Here are practical ways retailers, readers and communities can help turn awareness into meaningful impact.

• Partner with conservation groups — host collection boxes in-store for SANCCOB or run a point-of-sale donation option
• Donate a percentage of sales from a select product or a weekend promotion to penguin rescue organisations
• Sell or display educational material — posters, leaflets or SANCCOB adoption certificates at tills and community boards
• Sponsor a mural or local event — provide

materials, time, or a small grant to help artists and volunteers
• Run staff awareness sessions teams can answer customer questions about responsible tourism and penguin-safe practices
• Promote responsible visitation — SANParks guidance at the till and on social channels to protect nesting areas.
• Support SANCCOB — donate, volunteer, or symbolically adopt a penguin to fund life-saving care
• Visit Boulders Beach responsibly — use designated boardwalks and follow park rules so breeding sites remain undisturbed
• Raise awareness — photograph the murals, share facts and conservation links, and tag local leaders to push for action
• Advocate for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) — encourage local representatives to strengthen enforcement and expand protected feeding zones.
The Popping Up Penguins initiative shows how meaningful partnerships between artists, conservationists and corporate partners like Excelsior Paints and Hamilton’s Brushware can spark public awareness. The artworks beautify Cape Town while building a movement, reminding us that our natural heritage is fragile but worth fighting for.
// The hardware industry is increasingly rallying behind penguin conservation. Notably, the recent Mica Market event also selected SANCCOB as its chosen charity, further highlighting the importance of supporting coastal bird rescue and rehabilitation efforts //

For decades, the DIY, construction, hardware sector ran on a simple equation: Better specs + Lower prices = Growth. It was a race of engineering IQ. Companies optimised operations, tightened supply chains, and poured money into sales teams.
But recently, the math stopped working. Margins are shrinking. Competitors are cloning 'unique' features in weeks. Marketing has become a frantic game of tactic-chasing, burning cash on SEO one month and Instagram Reels the next, while market share trickles away.
The problem is not the product. The problem is that the sector is trying to outshout a market that is drowned out in noise.
This is the specific trap identified in the South African market by eQbator, an industrial-sector specialist team of nontraditional marketers.
They realised that while the industry was doubling down on Business IQ (logic, logistics, price), it was completely neglecting Market EQ (emotion, connection, loyalty).
eQbator doesn’t believe in shouting louder. They believe in connecting deeper – and changing the playing field.
Their formula is simple: EQ = sustainable growth
They take the operational brilliance a business already has and wrap it in a brand narrative that resonates. The goal is to turn scattered marketing spend into a compounding asset.
The founders, Arno and Craig, are not typical marketing agency guys. Arno, with an engineering background, and Craig, an entrepreneur at heart, used to run an eCommerce store in the sports retail industry before selling it in 2020. Does the eQbator formula work? Just ask the power tool retailer that saw a 14.788% revenue lift over three years working with eQbator. They did not do it by shouting. In fact, they achieved their highest traffic month ever while cutting ad spend by 50%.

// The lesson is clear: Stop building brands that just sell specs. Build a brand that stands for something – so it can withstand anything //

The beginning of the year is a critical reset point for hardware retailers. Customers are motivated by new year resolutions, new projects, and the desire to learn practical skills that make them more self-sufficient.
For retailers, this creates an ideal opportunity to grow high value categories that deliver repeat purchases and long-term customer engagement.
One category that continues to show strong demand is DIY welding.

Welding consistently ranks among the top five skills DIYers of all ages want to learn. From home repairs and maintenance to small fabrication and creative projects, customers are actively looking for welding solutions that are approachable and safe. What has changed is accessibility. Modern welding technology has made it easier for first time users to get started, while still offering the performance required for more
advanced projects. This shift has opened the door for hardware stores to grow a DIY welding segment that was once seen as too technical for the average customer.
The new year is when customers commit to learning new skills and taking on projects, they have been putting off. It is the moment when confidence is high and barriers to entry feel lower.
Strike-Arc is positioned specifically for this mindset. The brand makes DIY welding easier through user-friendly machines, improved safety features, and clear educational content. This focus is reflected in Strike-Arc’s growing social media following and strong engagement with its ‘How To’ video series, where thousands of DIYers are actively learning and applying welding skills. This is not passive interest; it is a ready-toconvert market.

What was once a trade-only hardcore DIY category is now one of the top skills DIYers want to learn, across all ages, lifestyles, and backgrounds.
New, safer, smaller and easier to use welding technology has opened the category to customers who were never considered before.
From homemakers and retirees to accountants and first time DIYers.
Strike-Arc is the brand focused on this new market.
We make welding DIY, supported by strong social engagement, practical online How To content, and products designed for accessibility and safety.
For you, the hardware retailer, this means a growing category, higher attachment sales, and new customers entering the welding aisle with confidence.

Strike-Arc makes welding more DIY.

Strike-Arc continues to refresh and expand its range, giving retailers new talking points, new display opportunities, and reasons for customers to engage with the category.
• Auto Darkening Welding Helmet with rounded screen (SASA400)
• 120 Amp 3 in 1 Inverter Welder (MMA, TIG, MIG) (SA1203IN1)
• Inverter Welder 200AMP 6 in 1 (SA200MTMC)
• Plasma Cutter with built in compressor (SACUT40COMP).
These additions allow retailers to cater for beginners, progressing DIYers, and more advanced users, all within one brand.
Growing the DIY welding category is not about overwhelming customers with technical detail. It is about simplifying choice, supporting education, and encouraging safe first purchases.
Strike-Arc supports retailers with in-store concepts, point of sale material, and store level activations designed to get customers interacting with welding products. Demonstrations, education driven displays, and clear product segmentation help reduce hesitation and increase conversion.
Welding also lends itself naturally to attachment sales. Safety gear, consumables, and accessories are essential parts of the purchase, increasing average basket value while reinforcing safe use.
Strike-Arc is a DIY focused welding brand, backed by consistent content, growing consumer demand, and a refreshed product pipeline. For hardware retailers, this means confidence in stocking a category that continues to grow beyond a once off purchase.
Contact Agrinet, the exclusive distributor of the Strike-Arc welding range. Agrinet offers product support, in-store concepts, and activation opportunities to help retailers grow their DIY welding category with confidence.

Higher dome, greater visibility, and maximum flexibility — the MC55 High is available in three variants.

The new ‘MC55 High’, WERMA Signaltechnik continues the success story of the compact MC55 signal light series. The 55mm diameter light has a higher dome, offering significantly better visibility – even from a greater distance or at unfavourable viewing angles. It can be flexibly integrated and is ideal for applications where status indicators must be in the operator’s direct field of vision, such as on machines, conveyor belts, in robot cells, or on peripheral devices.
“With the MC55 High, we have created a solution that seamlessly adapts to the requirements of modern industrial environments – visible from afar, eye-catching, flexible, and smartly expandable. The new design with a higher dome was developed specifically in response to feedback from our customers and represents the next logical step within the MC55 family,” says WERMA head of development Daniel Kensy.
With the MC55 High lights, customers get a modern, flexible, and powerful signal light. They are designed to function both as classic machine lights and as compact ‘one-click’

The standard version is available either as a tricolour variant (red/yellow/green) or as a multicolour version with seven colours. With or without a buzzer and equipped with a five-pin M12 connector, it offers an uncomplicated plugand-play solution for classic machine displays. It enables clear visual (and, if desired, acoustic) signals in the direct field of vision – ideal for classic applications such as machine or conveyor belt monitoring, where status indicators are required directly in the operator’s field of vision.
The IO-Link version offers users maximum control and parameterisation options. Functions, colours, and statuses can be centrally configured and dynamically controlled via IO-Link.
This makes this version particularly suitable for modern Industry 4.0 environments where flexible process adjustments, traceability, and fast responses are required. The RGB LEDs with seven colours and optional buzzer enable clear status assignments – directly from the control system.
solutions as an alternative to signal towers.
The MC55 High can be installed in classic M30 mounting holes, surface-mounted or on various tube lengths. This means that the previous recessed light can now also be used as a surfacemounted variant for the first time – a significant gain in flexibility for designers and plant engineers.
Typical applications for the MC55 High range from signalling machine statuses to manual workstations or access controls. Thanks to time-based escalation, the light first activates a visual signal in case of a malfunction; if there is no response, an acoustic alarm automatically follows.
The Smart version offers the widest range of functions and can be fully adapted to the respective application using the new WERMA configuration software. Colour selection, light patterns (continuous, flashing, strobe, or pulsed light), tones, and time-based escalations. External devices can also be switched directly via the Smart version.
This provides customers with a tailor-made signalling solution that can be precisely adapted to machines, processes, and operating concepts.
“The demand for compact, versatile, and intelligent signalling devices is constantly increasing. The MC55 High closes this gap –and it is just the beginning,” adds Kensy.

South Africa is driving ambitious infrastructure renewal, but without sustained investment in skills development, this momentum risks being lost.
Denver Berman-Jacob, who is completing his PhD at Erasmus University in the Netherlands, says the country must balance innovation with inclusion.
“AI is transforming many sectors, but no machine can replace the plumber who fixes your pipes in Mowbray, the electrician who restores power after load shedding in Bellville, or the miners who extract our natural resources. Skilled trades are still the backbone of this economy.”
Berman-Jacob warned that South Africa could not afford to leapfrog trades in its pursuit of a services-driven economy. “These industries employ large numbers of people with relatively low skill levels, bringing them into the formal economy. And then the ripple effect begins: one generation works in a factory, and the next moves into law, accountancy, or engineering.”
Nearly three decades after democracy, inequality remains one of South Africa’s biggest challenges. “We are still one of the most unequal societies in the world. Giving people access to the right tools and skills is an indirect way of addressing poverty and inequality.”
Sweet-Orr’s on-site training school has operated for decades, producing thousands of graduates who have gone on to work across industries. “If we can extend that commitment beyond our own factory gates into communities across Cape Town and the Western Cape, then we are fulfilling a national responsibility,” Berman-Jacob points out.

The distribution is being managed through RLabs, which has impacted more than 65 million people across 24 countries.
The partnership leverages RLabs’ extensive reach to distribute protective equipment to beneficiaries across the Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State.
The initiative targets a major obstacle: the high cost of compliant personal

protective equipment (PPE).
“You cannot access many workplaces without the correct workwear. For startups and small businesses, that cost can be prohibitive. By donating PPE, we are removing one of the barriers preventing people from entering these industries,” Berman-Jacob explained.
While the trade sector shed 52 000 formal jobs in the last quarter, construction’s year-on-year growth demonstrates resilience. “Trades remain a key growth sector, but we must act now to rebuild the pipeline of skilled workers before the opportunity is lost.”
In sectors such as chemicals, electricity, and heat-intensive work, proper workwear can be the difference between life and death. “If you are working in an environment with chemical spills, arc flash, or flames, the right garment protects you. It is not just about compliance, it’s about survival,” says Berman-Jacob.
The handover of protective workwear to startups and community groups began in October, with distribution ongoing across multiple provinces.

TimBuild Somerset West has entered a bold new era following a comprehensive store revamp completed in 2025, firmly positioning the business as a modern, high-impact destination for both trade professionals and DIY customers.

The transformation reflects a clear strategy: elevate the in-store experience, expand category strength, and give customers more reasons to choose TimBuild as their first stop.
The upgraded store now delivers far more than expanded shelf space. Customers can access a fully enhanced cut-and-edge facility, receive expert advice at the Plascon Paint Expert counter, browse a dedicated plant section, and engage with the in-store Design Hub. A local interior designer assists shoppers with colour selection, textures, and design inspiration, helping them visualise projects before making a purchase.

A key feature of the revamp is the integration of a dedicated INGCO shopin-shop, which opened in mid-December. Seamlessly incorporated into the refreshed layout, this section adds depth to TimBuild’s tool offering with a strong selection of INGCO power tools and hand tools. Known for bold branding, strong price positioning and proven sell-through, INGCO enhances the store’s appeal without detracting from the broader TimBuild retail experience.
The opening weekend highlighted the
success of the revamp strategy, drawing customers from well beyond the immediate area. Opening specials, giveaways and loyalty rewards created strong foot traffic, with TimBuild Expect More Rewards members enjoying exclusive promotions. One customer walked away with an INGCO toolkit valued at R5 000, reinforcing the store’s commitment to rewarding loyalty.
Owner Dirk Viviers says the revamp is about delivering on the TimBuild promise. “We are focused on delivering

exceptional service and truly living the TimBuild ‘Expect More’ philosophy. When customers walk into our store, they should experience more value, more service, more quality and more range.”
With its refreshed layout, expanded service offering and exciting new INGCO shop-in-shop, TimBuild Somerset West has proved how a well-executed store revamp can strengthen customer loyalty and position an independent retailer ahead of the curve.

A must-have for professional flooring finishes, the MTRIM 4-in-1 LVT Trim is designed specifically for Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) installations, delivering a clean, high-quality result every time. LVT trims are used to neatly finish
exposed edges, create smooth, safe transitions between different flooring heights, and protect vulnerable joints from wear, impact, moisture, and everyday foot traffic, helping to extend the lifespan of the floor.
This innovative 4-in-1 trim takes versatility to the next level by functioning as a corner piece, end
cap, transition ramp, or stair-nosing, all combined into one smart, spacesaving solution. Available in a wide range of colours, it allows retailers and installers to perfectly match customers’ LVT flooring or mosaic designs, ensuring a seamless, professional, and visually consistent finish in any installation.

Built for the Track, Perfect for the Workshop Tork Craft has just unveiled the new and improved Trackbox 2.0 – a rugged, purpose-built toolbox that’s every racer’s dream. Designed by international motocross champion Ryan Hunt, the Trackbox 2.0 reflects decades of racing and tool expertise in one premium package.
Following the success of the original Trackbox, the Tork Craft team took feedback from users in the field to refine and upgrade every detail. This has resulted in a 127-piece powerhouse, instantly recognisable by its bold three yellow drawers and top tray, offering better organisation, accessibility, and durability than ever before.
Built from mild steel and powder-coated black, the 26kg box (600 × 250 × 320mm) features lockable drawers with aluminium handles that glide smoothly on 35mm ball-bearing sliders. The top tray doubles as extra space for frequently used tools, keeping everything organised and close at hand, whether in the workshop or trackside.
Each drawer includes a precision-cut EVA foam insert loaded with professional-grade Tork Craft tools:
• Chrome vanadium steel spanner sets, sockets, torque wrench, and ratchets
• Screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, files, utility knife, and torch
• Tyre levers, spoke wrench kit, chain breaker, and cable luber
• Plus essentials like a tape measure, vernier, and tyre pressure gauge
• The Trackbox 2.0 is engineered to perform wherever the job - or the race - takes your customer. Ready. Set. Race. With Tork Craft.
A water-based metal primer and corrosion-inhibiting top coat featuring self-crosslinking acrylic dispersion for superior protection. Applies directly to rust or clean metal, including steel, galvanised, aluminium, stainless steel. Versatile brush, roller or spray application, fast drying (30 min touch-dry), durable, UV-resistant, low odour finish in multiple colours.

“The gold standard for sealing in and protecting the natural beauty of your tiles - with a satin finish.”
PURPOSE: Natural stone tiles are a choice investment; it makes sense to protect them with a hard wearing, protective finish. This one-part polyurethane-based sealer is designed to deep penetrate and bond onto natural stone walls and floor tiles. Specially formulated to seal marble, slate, granite, limestone, quartzite, sandstone and travertine tiles, and is also effective on ceramic, quarry and terracotta tiles.
DESCRIPTION: A solvent-based acrylic sealer designed to provide long-lasting protection against wear and staining with a non-yellowing, satin finish. Available in 1L tins.
