Reflecting on a Remarkable 2025A Bright Beginning for 2026
Dear Reader
I hope you have enjoyed the festive season and that the start of the new year has already brought with it a sense of excitement, renewed energy and positivity.
As we step into 2026, it's a perfect moment to pause and reflect on the extraordinary achievements and inspiring moments that defined 2025. This past year was a testament to human ingenuity, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge - a truly memorable chapter in our collective story.
One of the most exciting developments was the rapid advancement in sustainable technologies. Researchers made groundbreaking progress in renewable energy, with solar and wind power reaching new efficiency heights and significantly reducing global carbon footprints. South Africa has made significant strides in renewable energy, driven primarily by the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) and substantial private sector investment in solar and wind power. The country aims for renewable sources to account for 40-45% of its total energy by 2030.
Recently, Uruguay achieved energy independence by running on 100% renewable energy for 10 consecutive months, setting a global sustainability example. Between 1 July 2023 and end-April 2024, the South American nation generated all of its electricity from hydro, wind, bioenergy and solar, according to data collated by Ember.
These innovations are not just promising; they are actively transforming industries and communities worldwide.
In the realm of health and science, 2025 saw remarkable breakthroughs in personalised medicine.
New diagnostic tools and targeted treatments are now helping millions combat diseases more effectively than ever before. The successful deployment of AI-driven medical research accelerated vaccine development, exemplifying the incredible potential of technology to save lives.
Space exploration also reached new heights. There has been no successful crewed landing on Mars's orbit in 2025, but significant progress happened: Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket successfully launched NASA's EscaPADE twin satellites towards Mars’s orbit in November 2025, marking a major milestone for reusable rockets, while NASA focused on its Artemis Moon missions (like Artemis II) as preparation for eventual human Mars missions.
Closer to home, satellite technology became more advanced, enhancing urban planning, tracking demographic growth, monitoring national resources, and even revolutionising education delivery in the most remote locations.
On the social front, 2025 was a year of inspiring stories of unity and innovation. Communities around the world embraced digital inclusion, ensuring that technological benefits reached even the most underserved populations. The global push for education reform and access has begun to bridge long-standing gaps, fostering hope for a more equitable future.
As we look ahead to 2026, let’s carry the optimism and momentum of these achievements. The past year reminds us that even in challenging times, progress persists - driven by visionaries, scientists, and everyday heroes committed to shaping a better world. COMPACT MAGNETIC MINI-STIRRERS
Hanna HI180 series is compact, lightweight and inexpensive
Ideally, when performing electrochemistry measurements, the sample being tested should be stirred. The use of a magnetic stirrer allows for proper mixing and the sample to be homogenous in consistency and temperature. The stirring of the sample also helps speed up the response time of a sensor in achieving a stable reading.
Compact, colourful & cost-effective
The HI180 series of magnetic mini-stirrers are compact and lightweight, allowing for easy handling in the laboratory environment.
Limited area on laboratory benchtops is no longer a concern with these colourful, space-saving stirrers. Several HI180 ministirrers can be placed on the laboratory bench at once, and the ten available colours can help the user to recognise different samples.
Power-indicating LED lights also assure users at a distance that the stirrer is in operation. The durable plastic covering will resist harmful effects of accidentally spilled chemicals. The HI180 magnetic stirrer is cost effective for the customer that does not need the added expense of a heating element, incorporating electronic controls that allow the user to easily regulate the speed with greater precision.
XEVO MRT –
Speedsafe™
Often in the lab, a sample is removed from a stirrer before the speed is adequately reduced. Normally this would cause the internal motor to accelerate until it is damaged. To control the speed from changes in viscosity or removing of the load the HI180 magnetic mini-stirrer incorporates the Speedsafe mechanism. With Speedsafe, a speed-sensing device (opto-sensor) is coupled with an FVC
(frequency voltage converter) to monitor the stirring speed.
As the speed reaches a preset maximum level, the speed limiter shuts down the VCO (voltage-controlled oscillator) to slow down the motor speed. This ensures that when the load is suddenly removed from the stirrer, the motor will not accelerate to a high speed that will be hazardous to both the user and the stirrer - a feature not commonly found in conventional stirrers.
DELIVERING PERFORMANCE AT SPEED
The Waters Xevo™ MRT benchtop mass spectrometer (MS), is designed to meet the demanding needs of large-scale population and epidemiology-type studies. Building on the innovative technology pioneered by the Waters SELECT SERIES™ MRT MS, the Xevo MRT sets a new benchmark for high resolution and fast acquisition speeds.
The Xevo MRT MS combines the power and resolution speed of multi-reflecting time-offlight (MRT) and hybrid quadrupole time-offlight (QToF) technologies within a compact, flexible benchtop platform, without compromising analytical performance.
Unmatched analytical performance
Whether in academia or industry, achieve exceptional science 100% of the time with the Xevo MRT mass spectrometer. This state-of-theart QToF system delivers a 100 000 full width half maximum (FWHM) resolution at 100Hz MS/ MS scan speed and <500 parts per billion (ppb)
mass accuracy. This enables deeper probing of biologically relevant concentrations with high levels of mass accuracy, independent of acquisition rate.
Unlock a new level of confidence
The innovative multi-reflecting time-of-flight design of the Xevo MRT MS empowers scientists to work at maximum resolution with high sensitivity and fast data acquisition rates. TESTING & ANALYSIS
IMPACT OF CORROSION
The impact of corrosion has far-reaching consequences, posing climate-related and economic challenges on a grand scale.
Corrosion is everywhere - it can be observed as peeling paint or pigment on a vehicle, especially in coastal areas, or a leaking pipe or, most noticeably, on a rusty steel bridge structure exposed to everyday weather patterns, leading to degradation. In the medical field, devices can corrode due to bodily fluids or micro-organisms, and historical artefacts wear down from being in contact with soil or water.
Billions of rands are lost through corrosion. It is therefore critical to ensure that accurate and efficient methods for corrosion mitigation and prevention processes are put into effect.
Traditional methods for corrosion monitoring include immersion testing, weight loss method, and the more common salt spray test. These tests are simple; however, they are time dependent, and only offer limited information about the corrosion mechanism. This is where electrochemical methods are advantageous. Electrochemical procedures are fast and, more importantly, can provide quantitative data that can assist in predicting failure. Corrosion rate, corrosion current and potential, and Tafel constants are some of the important parameters that can be measured using Metrohm Autolab potentiostat/ galvanostat instruments. Corrosion applications notes in accordance with ASTM G5, G59, G100, G102, G185 can be found on the Metrohm website: www.metrohm.co.za
Linear Polarisation and Tafel analysis are most used to estimate the lifespan of a material under specific conditions.
Zero Resistance Ammeter (ZRA) is useful for gaining insights into pitting rates and monitoring an alloy or metal in a specific environment over time.
Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is important for the study of insulating coatings, solvent uptake and coating failure, and to measure parameters such as Polarisation resistance, Film/Coating resistance and Chargetransfer resistance. The addition of the Rotating Cylinder Electrode (RCE) allows for the simulation of realistic pipe conditions for corrosion inhibition efficiency measurement in turbulent flow conditions.
Metrohm Autolab has various workstations, including Vionic powered by Intello, our compact, modular and multichannel options that meet the experimental requirements of researchers, industrial corrosion researchers and specialists.
