This has been another fantastic year for sport at Greenlands! Once again, we’ve seen our children embracing new challenges, representing the school with pride, and throwing themselves into a wide range of physical activities.

A major highlight of the year was our girls’ hockey team, who were victorious in the Year 5/6 Rotherham Schools’ Hockey Festival. Their teamwork, determination and skill shone through, and they went on to represent Greenlands at the county finals, where they placed an impressive third. It was a proud moment for the whole school, and a testament to the effort the team put into training.

We’ve continued to push for inclusion and opportunity in sport, particularly for our younger children This year, a team of Year 3 girls took part in the national #LetGirlsPlay football tournament, showing great enthusiasm and team spirit It was a brilliant experience for them, and one we hope will spark a love of sport for years to come.

A memorable and unique event this year was our involvement in the Rotherham “Capital of Culture Baton Relay” We were thrilled to welcome children from Anston Park, before four of our own pupils proudly carried the official baton on the next leg of its journey to Brook. Inspired by this, every class in school took part in their own baton relay an exciting and energetic way to mark the event and bring the whole school together

One of the most heartfelt sporting events this year was a special, secret funrun, organised in support of one of our own pupils who took on the incredible challenge of running “3k a day in May” to raise money for charity. To show our support, the whole school surprised them by taking part in a 3k fun-run of our own. It was a wonderful show of community, and a moment that captured the spirit of sport at Greenlands: togetherness, resilience and care

As always, our sporting year has been supported by a strong programme of PE and enrichment, both during the school day and beyond Children have had opportunities to be active every day, and staff continue to model and celebrate active lifestyles Whether through inter-school events, whole-school participation or individual achievements, we are proud of every child who has taken part and given their best.

We’re already looking ahead to next year, with plans to build on what has been a vibrant and inspiring year of sport We look forward to another active year in 2025/26!

This year at Redscope we are pleased to have provided lots of opportunities to enhance our PE curriculum through competitive and non-competitive events throughout the school day, along with a range of after school provision These have included events through external providers such as Rotherham School Games, Rotherham United Community Trust and local partnerships.

As a school, we have continued working with Rotherham School Games to provide a positive and engaging experience for all children in school, focusing on the young person's motivation, competence, and confidence as central elements of the competition. This year we have focused on engaging as many young people as possible in sports and physical activity and identifying children with top performing potential to represent Rotherham at regional and county level events We are pleased to have had students representing our area at a number of events including U.K. Ice-hockey, Rotherham School Boys Football, Sheffield Wednesday Football Academy, and UK Karate, as well as participating in a cheerleading event Sadly, the number of children we could reach has been limited through transportation issues with school no longer having access to the community minibus

Our pupils have enjoyed taking part in a range of events at New York Stadium including equality and diversity in football, maths and English workshops, and mental health support for vulnerable students. The Half Time Cup was, as always, a highlight of our sporting calendar with the children getting through to the second round with an exciting 3-3 draw which went to penalties.

In the autumn term, we relaunched Bikeability in school. We had great feedback from the 26 Year 6 pupils who took part in the cycling training program The children shared how they learnt how to cycle safely and confidently on today's roads and improved their cycling skills and road awareness We also introduced Bikeability Balance, a cycle training program which has been used as an intervention to support the development of provision. The program focuses on ty balance and coordination using 's chi art and re ar

Football has continued to be a favourite sport at Redscope and this year we have focused on encouraging girls to become a part of our team We hope that in the future we will be able to re-establish our girls football team. The children have taken part in a variety of competitions throughout the year

We have also attended some SEND specific events such as the cross-country style run at Abby School. The inclusive event gave pupils the opportunity to meet other SEND children in a sporting environment whilst completing a funrun-style cross country course The children could pick a shorter or a longer route to complete and decided after completing the shorter route to challenge themselves to complete both We were so proud of them!

As part of the Children's Capital of Culture festival year for 2025, a selection of pupils took part in the Rotherham Baton Relay along with 86 Rotherham schools. The children who took part were eager to share their experience of the event with their peers back in school

In the summer term a group of KS2 children were invited to Herringthorpe Stadium to take part in Rotherham School Games Festival of Sport There were 10 different providers on the day: Rotherham Hockey Club, Rotherham United Community Trust, Stacking Cups, NovaCity – Parkour, OnBoard – Scooter & BMX, Yorkshire Cricket – Interactive Zone, Rotherham Golf Club, Skipping School, Sheffield Giants – American Flag Football and Sheffield Karate Club. The children spent 30 minutes at each station using specialist equipment and getting a real feel for a range of sports, many of which they had never experienced

Throughout the year, Miss Morgan has led a Key Stage Two dance club and Miss Moran has led a Key Stage One dance club, where children have learnt and created their own rou ed at our Christmas Carol a hool and the ‘Thorpe Hesley t ge Two children have also h wo students won trophies m ed a scholarship with a

Children were welcomed back to school by staff and pupils cheering them on and giving amazing support!

The week commencing 30th June brought Sports Days for our Nursery, Foundation, KS1, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 children. Everyone across school participated in a range of activities from relays to skipping, and parents and carers were invited to watch and celebrate with us In June we hosted our own ‘Thorpe Hesley Colour Run’ where children and their families were invited to race, run, jog or walk on our school field and finish covered in bright colours

To finish the year, we are celebrating the life of Steve Rhodes, the former headteacher of Winterhill School, who was a keen sportsman and football advocate. Boys and girls from Year 4 have played in the Steve Rhodes Football cup against other Rotherham Schools

On Wednesday 25th June, New College Doncaster hosted the NCLT Primary School Varsity Event, welcoming enthusiastic Year 4 pupils from Redscope, Anston Greenlands, and Thorpe Hesley primary schools. The event was a celebration of sport, teamwork, and friendship, with students mixed into four teams named after iconic local sporting heroes: Burrows, Adams, Fitzpatrick, and Ennis-Hill.

Competitive sport highlights

A season on from their incredible league win and unbeaten season, the NCB 1st XI football team finished in a very respectable mid-table position in the Yorkshire & Humber West Division A, following promotion from West B. The league was full of well-established college first teams from the region, and NCB made it clear that they are more than capable of competing at this level The cricketers also competed well this year but unfortunately missed out on qualification for the national T20 quarter finals They did however secure the Varsity indoor cricket title, following a thrilling showdown with New College Pontefract.

TASS Dual Career Accreditation

This will allow our students who are competing at a high level in their sport to access extra staff support, academic flexibility, and relevant workshops and seminars to help them balance their studies with their sporting development. We believe this will have great benefits for our current studentathletes and will motivate prospective students who play sport at a high level to study at NCB.
