THRASHER PARTNERS WITH SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE

TEXT AND PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

The Thrasher Foundation Repair team put their hands and hearts into a community cause Sept. 24 when 88 employees partnered with the nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace to build 69 beds for children in need. The beds were delivered to families the following week.

The volunteers donated 162 hours at the nonprofit’s Millard warehouse, sanding, drilling, staining, branding and assembling bed frames.

“It’s hard to imagine a child growing up without a bed to sleep in,” CEO Dan Thrasher said. “Being part of changing that, even in a small way, is deeply meaningful. It’s a reminder that our work is about people and the difference we can make when we show up for each other.”

The service effort followed Thrasher’s 50th anniversary giveback in July and emphasized a well-established relationship between Sleep in Heavenly Peace and Thrasher after many years of partnered service events. The nonprofit’s mission — that every child has a bed to sleep in — aligns closely with Thrasher’s commitment to home safety and stability across the Omaha metro.

Paid sick time law goes into effect

The Nebraska Healthy Families and Workplaces Act, known as the paid sick time law, went into effect Oct. 1. The new law requires businesses with 11 or more employees to provide their employees with paid sick time. Nebraska employers were required to provide written notice and postings regarding the new law beginning Sept. 15.

Under the new law, employees accrue paid sick time after 80 hours of employment and at a minimum of one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. Employers may cap the leave at 40 hours or 56 hours per year, depending on employer size, or they may provide more leave than what the law requires.

Small businesses (employers with 11 to 19 employees) must allow employees to accrue up to 40 hours of paid sick time per year. Employers with 20 or more employees must allow employees to accrue up to 56 hours of paid sick leave per year.

Employees may use paid sick time at their own request, free from retaliation, for themselves, a family member or like-family relationship; for mental or physical illness; for preventative medical care; or for closure of school or child care by order of public health emergency. More information is available at dol.nebraska.gov/LaborStandards.

HOW OMAHA’S CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY TRANSFORMED OVER 50 YEARS

Partnership is the piece many still underestimate. Success in construction has always relied on teamwork, but today it’s about more than coordinating trades on a job site.
- BRIAN MAHLENDORF, THE WEITZ COMPANY

In 1974, when a construction crew broke ground on a new building in Omaha, the process was straightforward: lowest bid wins, build what’s on paper, hand over the keys. Compare that straightforward approach to the projects dotting today’s skyline, headlined by the $600 million Mutual of Omaha Tower, each a collaborative partnership involving architects, engineers and builders working as integrated teams from day one.

This transformation reflects more than changing business practices, it represents a fundamental reimagining of how cities grow. The relationship between contractors, agencies and communities has transformed as well. Public engagement and environmental stewardship have become central to project success.

“Over the last 50 years, the way major infrastructure gets delivered has changed a lot,” said Sam Chai, president of Kiewit Development Company. “One of the largest shifts has been from low-bid contracting to more collaborative, integrated models like

design-build; engineering, procurement, construction and public-private partnerships.”

Alan Kennedy, president and COO of Lueder, agreed. “Utilizing Construction Manager at Risk (CMaR) procurement method has grown significantly over the years versus the more known traditional design-bid-build, i.e., hard bid method. The CMaR process, when utilized in its fullest capacity, really shines, since the design team and construction manager join the owner at the concept stage of the project and the entire team can design and develop cost estimates, discuss constructability options and values, among other items. The project will (then) have the best overall value for the owner.”

Throughout all of these changes, Omaha has become a proving ground for construction giants who now view themselves not as contractors but as strategic partners shaping the region’s economic future. This evolution has positioned regional construction firms to tackle increasingly complex projects.

Building the Future

HOW OMAHA’S CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY TRANSFORMED OVER 50 YEARS

We’re seeing tremendous interest in investment, as I think it’s sort of the last major industry, major GDP driver that hasn’t really seen a lot of benefits from technology.

JE Dunn Construction, which established its Omaha office about 18 years ago with six employees, now employs more than 400 people locally while pursuing megaprojects nationwide.

“For us, a megaproject is more about the number of staff it takes and the size of it,” said Gordon Lansford, president and CEO. “Generally, we look at projects that take more than about 75% of our oversight staff, or project managers and superintendents.”

The scale represents a dramatic departure from the industry’s earlier focus on simple bid-and-build contracts. Today’s projects demand expertise across multiple disciplines, from data centers requiring specialized mechanical and electrical systems to advanced manufacturing facilities with strict environmental standards.

The Weitz Company has embraced this complexity through early collaboration with architects and engineers. Their work on the Sandhills Global Technology Center exemplifies the new approach where buildings become teaching tools through exposed systems and transparent design choices.

“Partnership is the piece many still underestimate,” said

- GORDON LANSFORD, JE DUNN CONSTRUCTION COMPANY

Brian Mahlendorf, vice president and general manager. “Success in construction has always relied on teamwork, but today it’s about more than coordinating trades on a job site.”

Technology integration has accelerated this collaborative model.

JE Dunn operates a 70,000-square-foot off-site manufacturing facility in Kansas City that will soon expand to five times its current size. The facility produces prefabricated components that arrive at job sites ready for installation, improving safety, quality and productivity while addressing ongoing labor shortages.

“What off-site manufacturing does is it takes a lot of the labor hours off the project into a controlled facility where you can have better productivity, you can be safer, you can have higher quality,” Lansford said.

This shift has created new challenges that require creative solutions. The construction industry’s chronic labor shortage — averaging 382,000 job openings monthly between August 2023 and July 2024 — has forced companies to completely rethink how

buildings get built.

“In many ways, the challenges facing construction today have been consistent themes for decades,” said George Schuler, president of Boyd Jones. “Access to talent, supply chain disruptions, safety, and the changing technological landscape are not new themes in our industry. However, numerous events across the last two decades have intensified the complexity of these challenges. This amplification has required sophisticated solutions, including innovative workforce development strategies, advanced procurement and risk management processes, and the rapid vetting of technologies.”

JE Dunn’s answer sits in a 70,000-square-foot facility in Kansas City where workers assemble building components in a controlled environment before shipping them to job sites. It’s manufacturing applied to construction, and it’s working so well the company plans to expand the facility fivefold.

Sustainability ranks high

Meanwhile, environmental demands have created another layer of complexity. Companies now employ dedicated sustainability directors who work with clients to minimize environmental impact both during construction and throughout a building’s lifecycle. It’s a far cry from the 1970s when environmental considerations rarely factored into construction decisions.

“We want to be a partner with (clients) to understand the environmental impact that their project has during construction and post-

construction,” Lansford said.

Supply chain management has evolved significantly through the years, particularly following COVID-19 disruptions. Companies have increased procurement talent and developed strategies to identify long-lead items early in the process. Kiewit’s 2023 acquisition of Weeks Marine exemplifies this diversification strategy, expanding capabilities into dredging, tunneling and coastal resiliency.

“This diversity helps us better manage market cycles,” Chai said. “Our 2023 acquisition of Weeks Marine, Inc. is a good example of our efforts to further expand into new markets.”

The relationship between contractors, agencies and communities has transformed as well. Public engagement and environmental stewardship have become central to project success.

“Community needs and expectations are higher. The public is more vocal and engaged in project decisions than ever,” Chai said. “We see that as an opportunity — starting with being transparent, collaborating early and aligning projects with broader community needs.”

Artificial intelligence represents the industry’s next frontier. While construction has been slow to adopt technology compared to other sectors, experts predict 2025 will mark AI’s breakthrough year in construction.

“We’re seeing tremendous interest in investment, as I think it’s sort of the last major industry, major GDP driver that hasn’t really seen a lot of benefits from technology,” Lansford said.

Building the Future

HOW OMAHA’S CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY TRANSFORMED OVER 50 YEARS

“Technology, when incorporated thoughtfully and at a pace conducive to learning and understanding its benefits as well as in impacts, is a valuable tool. At the same time, you have to train, and incorporate to personnel, the benefits, and outcomes that technology can provide. Always remember that technology is a tool in the toolbox, not the end-all.”

The focus remains on augmenting rather than replacing workers. Current AI applications include project estimation, scheduling and risk analysis, while field innovations involve robotics for layout and masonry installation.

The revolution extends beyond job sites into boardrooms and community meetings. Where 1970s contractors simply built what architects designed, today’s construction leaders sit at the planning table from the beginning. They influence everything from material selection to long-term building performance, making decisions that will affect Omaha’s skyline for generations.

“The earlier we collaborate with designers and stakeholders, the more we can influence outcomes like sustainability, cost certainty, constructability and long-term performance,” Mahlendorf said.

Building the Future

The future defies imagination

Looking ahead, artificial intelligence promises to accelerate this transformation even further. While construction has lagged behind other industries in technology adoption, experts predict 2025 will mark AI’s breakthrough year in the field.

The men and women who built Omaha in the 1970s would barely recognize today’s construction sites, where robots assist with layout, prefabricated components arrive ready for installation, and project managers use predictive analytics to prevent problems before they occur. Yet the fundamental satisfaction remains unchanged.

“I think there’s just a great satisfaction on seeing a finished product,” Lansford said. “We’re building beautiful structures that last for generations.”

Those structures — from the advanced manufacturing facilities reshaping the city’s industrial corridors to the data centers powering the digital economy — represent more than architectural achievement. They embody five decades of evolution that transformed an industry and, in the process, redefined what it means to build a modern American city.

50 Years of Construction in Omaha A

SKYLINE REVOLUTION (1974-2024)

1970s-1980s: Traditional foundations

Omaha’s construction industry operated with manual drafting, castin-place concrete and traditional steel frame methods. Woodmen Tower, completed in 1969 at 30 stories, dominated the skyline while the Mutual of Omaha Building, its tower addition finished in 1970, established its midtown presence at 268 feet.

Local firms getting their start in Omaha would eventually grow into industry powerhouses. Kiewit Corporation, founded in 1884 as Kiewit Brothers Masonry Contractors; Hawkins Construction Company, founded in 1922 and incorporated in 1960; and The Weitz Company, established 1855, built their reputations using proven construction methods.

Early computer-aided design systems began replacing hand-drawn blueprints by the mid-1980s as the insurance and agricultural processing sectors drove demand.

1990s-2000s:

Digital revolution and skyline transformation

The economic boom of this period brought massive technological shifts. Computer-aided design (CAD) systems became standard while early project management software revolutionized coordination. GPS technology transformed surveying and earthmoving operations.

Major projects reshaped downtown: First National Bank Tower, completed in 2002, reached 634 feet as the new tallest building, followed by Union Pacific Center in 2004. CHI Health Center, constructed by Kiewit with DLR Group between March 2001 and September 2003, transformed the entertainment district. These projects utilized 3D modeling, concrete pumping trucks and early green building practices.

2010s: BIM integration and entertainment hub

Building Information Modeling became the industry standard as mobile technology enabled real-time field communication. Drone technology revolutionized progress monitoring and safety while advanced prefabrication methods gained acceptance.

TD Ameritrade Park (now Charles Schwab Field) completed construction as the College World Series venue, complementing the downtown entertainment district around CHI Health Center. Health care expansions at University of Nebraska Medical Center and Nebraska Medicine showcased

Celebrating Builders

National Construction Appreciation Week, held Sept. 15-19, 2025, recognized the men and women instrumental in the development of our infrastructure. While the average American equates construction jobs with demolished job sites, orange cones, concrete trucks and traffic delays, the industry contributes more than $2 trillion annually to the U.S. economy, giving employment to more than 8 million people. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that about 649,300 openings are projected annually in these occupations, due to employment growth and the need to replace workers who leave the occupations permanently.

In Omaha, several construction-related events have occurred this month. The Building Component Manufacturers Conference is happening this week at CHI Health Center Omaha, featuring exhibits, live machinery demonstrations, educational sessions, and networking opportunities. The REACH Program, a strategic initiative of the Greater Omaha Chamber,

smart building systems integration during construction, while sustainable practices and LEED certification became standard requirements.

2020s: Mega-projects and AI integration

Over $8 billion in new development is currently reshaping greater Omaha, led by transformational projects such as Mutual of Omaha’s $600 million, 677foot headquarters tower completing in 2026. It joins the $101 million Kiewit Luminarium, Nebraska Medicine’s massive $2.19 billion Project Health Tower with 550 beds, and the $105 million Central Park Plaza third tower that will add 17 stories downtown.

Artificial intelligence now assists project scheduling, while 3D printing creates construction components. Virtual reality enables design reviews, and Internet of Things sensors provide real-time monitoring. Robotics handles repetitive tasks as cloud-based project management revolutionizes collaboration.

Industry evolution by the numbers

Local construction firms have grown dramatically over the decades. Hawkins Construction now generates over $350 million annually while The Weitz Company leverages 170 years of experience as America’s sixth-oldest architectural/engineering/construction firm. These companies compete alongside national firms like Turner Construction, which manages $400 million annually in Omaha.

Technological timeline

• 1970s: Manual drafting, traditional concrete and steel

• 1980s: Early CAD adoption, improved equipment

• 1990s: Computer project management, laser surveying

• 2000s: 3D modeling, GPS technology, green building

• 2010s: BIM systems, drones, mobile integration

• 2020s: AI assistance, 3D printing, IoT monitoring

From Woodmen Tower’s completion in 1969 to today’s sensor-monitored, AI-assisted construction sites managing billion-dollar projects, Omaha’s construction industry exemplifies 50 years of technological revolution that has fundamentally transformed both building methods and the city’s architectural identity.

CONSTRUCTION INCLUSION WEEK HIGHLIGHTS INDUSTRY OPPORTUNITIES

I love to see that we are growing businesses that are here in our market, that we have people in our community that are now able to feed their families and make investments in Omaha.
- WINSLEY DURAND III, SENIOR DIRECTOR OF DIVERSITY AND ECONOMIC INCLUSION, MCL CONSTRUCTION

As various construction companies in the Omaha area gear up for Construction Inclusion Week, diversity, equity and inclusion efforts have been under attack politically, creating a climate in which many companies and government agencies are halting DEI programs.

Maybe DEI isn’t getting much love from the top, but in the Omaha construction sector, arms are open to welcome previously underrepresented people and communities to the workforce and industry.

In its fifth year, Construction Inclusion Week, held Oct. 13-17, is a nationwide initiative that aims to recruit and retain talent in the industry by providing opportunities through workforce development. In addition to building awareness, the event offers content and strategies to promote DEI in the construction business.

Firms in the Omaha area have a number of ongoing initiatives and policies in place while also planning to observe Construction Inclusion Week through activities and outreach. Winsley Durand III, senior director of diversity and economic inclusion at MCL Construction, said a foundation of inclusivity in construction can only strengthen the industry as a whole.

“Inclusion in construction is basically economic development,” Durand said. “As we look to utilize subcontractors for our program, about 90% of the subcontractors we use are from the local area. We try to utilize small contractors and help build them and their capacities so that we continue to have strong, robust subcontractors to be able to utilize now and into the future.”

The event dovetails with Construction Appreciation Week, which was observed this year Sept. 15-19 and recognized the contributions construction professionals and companies make to the nation’s economy and infrastructure. Participants were urged to organize events, share stories and post official Construction Appreciation Week information on social media, and to simply speak positively and thank individuals in the industry.

“In our industry, there is so much work going on behind the scenes that oftentimes gets overlooked,” said Holly Hunt, principal at ELEVATE Construction. “By highlighting construction, we remind people of the essential role trades play in shaping the landscape of our community.”

It’s the economy

Durand, who joined MCL in 2024, is the founder of REACH, an education-based small business development program, and the former director of minority development and retail attraction for the Greater Omaha Chamber.

Durand said when he thinks DEI, he thinks in terms of education, business opportunity and technicalassistance. MCL’s efforts focus on financial education and literacy — helping people build a line of credit and gain access to capital — as well as education that covers things like bidding processes and blueprint reading for small contractors in English, Spanish and Russian.

“By us assisting and sowing the seeds for them to grow their businesses, it helps grow the economy, and that is a good thing for the future of the construction industry,” Durand said.

Kris Montgomery, Nebraska market leader with McCarthy Building Companies, noted there is a construction worker shortage and said inclusivity helps provide a path to solving the problem. Like MCL, McCarthy centers its efforts on workforce development, small business outreach and community engagement.

“Construction is a rewarding career, but many young people are not aware of the opportunities,” Montgomery said. “Through a wide range of workforce development efforts, McCarthy believes we can strengthen and create lasting impact in the communities where we live and build.”

Small business development is part of ELEVATE’s approach as well. Hunt said the company partners with local woman- and minority-owned businesses and organizations to maximize opportunities.

“When a team is brought together from different backgrounds and experiences, it ultimately creates stronger projects by achieving creative problem-solving, better communication and a team that reflects the communities we’re building for,” she said. “I believe inclusion also helps to broaden the talent pipeline and strengthen retention.”

Inclusion solutions

To assist with its education and outreach activities, Durand said MCL Construction partners with around a dozen community services entities. These include the Urban League, the Nebraska Enterprise Fund — a statewide financing company — the Nebraska Business Development Center, the Midlands African Chamber and the United Hispanic Contractors Association.

“There is no one entity that can do everything on its own,” Durand said. “Utilizing a network of community organizations really helps us to reach more people to leverage resources across a number of different entities and really be more effective and more efficient.”

Quinn Texmo, community and citizenship manager and diversity advocate at Turner

As a community builder, we prioritize community engagement because the projects we build should also strengthen neighborhoods around them.
-KRIS MONTGOMERY, NEBRASKA MARKET LEADER, MCCARTHY BUILDING COMPANIES

Construction, said the company has in-place initiatives and a playbook to foster an inclusive and respectful workplace.

For Construction Inclusion Week, Turner unveiled the theme “Opening Doors: Building a Workplace for Everyone.” The efforts included toolbox talks, student and community outreach events and full company standowns allowing time for discussions and sharing visions of inclusivity.

Texmo noted that Turner’s efforts extend well beyond Construction Inclusion Week. Her company has again partnered with the Greater Omaha Chamber REACH program begun by Durand and the City of Omaha’s third annual small business speed networking event on Nov. 6.

“At this event, we invite all larger general contractors to host a table and encourage all small businesses in the construction industry to come to this event where they can meet and engage with multiple businesses to find opportunities to bid on future work,” Texmo said.

Hunt said ELEVATE Construction is a place in which every team member has a voice. ELEVATE is planning to celebrate Construction Inclusion Week with team outings and interactive activities to strengthen company culture.

“It’s an extension of our core values at ELEVATE: people-centric culture, leading with integrity and continuous improvement,” Hunt said.

Employee-owned McCarthy, a founding member of Construction Inclusion Week, offers events like STEMstruction, planned for Oct. 11 at its McCarthy Civil Warehouse. The cost-free, hands-on experience introduces high school students to construction’s many career paths by allowing them to interact with McCarthy’s Omaha-based team, trade partners and industry leaders.

“STEMstruction is about opening doors, creating opportunities and showing students that construction is a place where they can belong, thrive and succeed,” Montgomery said, “inspiring the next generation of builders and innovators and helping ensure a strong workforce ready to contribute to Omaha’s growth.”

McCarthy’s plans for Construction Inclusion Week include a national webinar, among other hosted events, to connect with others and engage in meaningful conversations. Also across the nation, McCarthy teams are planning to take part in workforce development programs for K-12 and higher education

students, outreach events, lunch and learns with small business trade partners and volunteer service projects.

“These activities demonstrate that workforce and community engagement are central to our commitment as a community builder,” Montgomery said.

Saying thanks

In 2018, I Build America HCSS CEO Mike Rydin founded Construction Appreciation Week to recognize and show appreciation for the people who make up the industry as well as to improve public awareness of construction’s value to the U.S. and the world.

As with their DEI efforts, many companies see construction appreciation as a yearround thing.

“Showing appreciation to our team isn’t limited to one week at ELEVATE; it’s part of our culture,” Hunt said. “We strive to continuously recognize the hard work of our project managers, superintendents and office team to ensure they feel valued year-round. STAYING SAFE IN THE EVER-CHANGING DIGITAL LANDSCAPE

We’re entering a phase where cybersecurity is less about building a taller fence and more about assuming someone will eventually hop it.

Hackers, data breaches, computer viruses — there is plenty to worry about when it comes to cybersecurity safety in 2025.

The Nebraska Data Privacy Act, put into effect Jan. 1, 2025, requires businesses in Nebraska to protect consumer personal data while allowing consumers to access, correct and delete data and allow consent for selling data for advertising purposes.

Nick Kozusko, cybersecurity operations manager with American PCS, said the law empowers residents to take greater control of their personal information.

- TRISH CODY, CO-OWNER/CHIEF STRATEGY OFFICER, 12 POINTS TECHNOLOGIES

“For years, organizations could collect and sell personal information without explicit consent,” he said. “When that data was compromised, many individuals became victims of identity theft. The new law is designed to give people more transparency and control over how their data is used.”

Trish Cody, co-owner and chief strategy officer at 12 Points Technologies, explained what impact she’s noticed so far.

“The day-to-day impact on Nebraskans has been more practical than dramatic: fewer creepy retargeting ads when universal opt-out is enabled; clearer do not sell/share buttons; and faster, more formal responses when you ask a company to access, delete or correct your data,” she said. “I’m also seeing more people switch browsers, flip on privacy features or install privacy extensions.”

Positives and negatives of AI in cybersecurity

Blaine Kahle, chief technology officer at Five Nines, spoke of AI’s ability to impersonate and confuse even the smartest of people.

“AI is providing security teams with enhanced detection capabilities, but it’s an arms race against malicious actors being able to leverage AI to obfuscate their activity,” he said. “While impersonation attacks over the phone or even video are now far more convincing using deepfakes, we’re also seeing a rise in capability to have computers detect when AI is present. Expect to see more of this filtering down the consumer-facing applications. Your online meeting might start warning you ‘Possible AI participant detected.’”

Kozusko said cybercriminals are using AI to make attacks faster, cheaper and more convincing. For example, phishing emails aren’t as easy to spot anymore, as they are more personalized and can include detailed information gleaned from someone’s social media.

“AI is also being used to create custom malware that can bypass traditional security tools, scaling attacks across multiple organizations,” he said.

On the flipside, AI has incredible positives and has become an essential tool for many businesses when it comes to cybersecurity efforts. Whether helping analyze large volumes or identify unusual activity that might indicate a security breach or via chatbots that help organizations share policies or procedures more securely, AI can save businesses time and money.

Kozusko explained that AI-powered endpoint detection and response is helping detect threats faster, reduce response times and lower the risk of security problems. He also shared that managed detection and response services leverage AI to augment human analysts.

“AI assistants triage alerts, reduce false positives and accelerate investigations,

allowing security teams to focus on real threats,” he said. “Automated threat hunting, powered by AI, scans massive datasets that would be impossible for humans to handle manually, leading to faster, more accurate incident response.”

Impersonation scams are also on the rise Kozusko said, especially through a new tactic called voice cloning.

“With just a short audio clip, a hacker can mimic someone’s voice and use it in combination with caller ID spoofing, making a fake call from a boss, vendor or bank sound real,” he said.

Kahle reiterated that these types of scams are especially confusing because of how easy it is to clone a voice or image.

“Be suspicious of anything you receive inbound, whether that’s phone or video calls, email or paper mail,” he said. “Call back to trusted phone numbers obtained from official websites, the back of your financial cards or already stored in your contacts and previously used. Establish a family password that your whole extended family knows, so you can request it if you need to help confirm a caller is who they really are.”

How businesses can stay protected

Staying safe from cybersecurity threats begins with individuals and businesses taking proactive measures to protect themselves online. Ken Moreano, president and CEO of Scott Data Center, said ransomware is a continuing threat and using secure, private, auditable platforms is key for securing data.

“Businesses need to increase security measures,” he said. “Examples include better encryption, access control and other security technologies within data centers. Cybersecurity is an ongoing, everyday challenge that requires deliberate policies, procedures, training, protocols and diligence.”

Cody said a few tried-and-true fundamentals everyone should be using include adopting a password manager and migrating passkeys where available, enabling multifactor authentication and keeping operating systems and browsers patched and up to date. This goes for everyone: individuals, small businesses, medium-sized organizations and large corporations.

“The number of small- to medium-sized businesses we see that do not follow these rules in their organization is staggering,” she said. “The idea being that they are too small to be a target, or it hasn’t happened yet, or any other number of excuses.”

She also recommended regularly backing everything up.

“Make your backup schedule based on how far back you feel like you could lose data without a big hit,” she said. “For example, a month’s worth of data, a week, a day.”

Phone app safety is also another thing to keep in mind. First, keep in mind to always download from official app stores such as Apple App Store or Google Play, or directly from a company website. Also, don’t connect to your phone or apps on an unsecured wi-fi network and if you get an emailed link that you didn’t request, this could lead to a phishing site that is replicated to look like the real one to steal your password.

Kahle said taking the practical position of simply assuming that your personal information is already in wide circulation can be a helpful way to think about how to stay more secure.

“This changes your mindset from the impossible goal of protecting your data held by numerous businesses to one you have control over,” he said. “Put freezes on all your credit reports with the four largest agencies: Experian, TransUnion, Equifax and Innovis. Be suspicious about attempts to coerce you out of money, whether the fraudster is impersonating a government agency or a family member. Them ‘knowing secret things about you’ is no longer an effective way of weeding out scams versus legitimate notifications.”

Cyber safety begins with staying informed and prioritizing digital habits that don’t open individuals or businesses up to harm.

“We’re entering a phase where cybersecurity is less about building a taller

fence and more about assuming someone will eventually hop it,” Cody said. “So, while focus is still on prevention, equal focus and importance should be given to resilience and fast recovery. Identity is the new perimeter, so password-less logins, strong MFA that resists push-bombing, and continuous verification are becoming non-negotiable defenses.” MIDLANDS

Able Locksmiths

Able Locksmiths

SECURING THE COMMUNITY FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS

Having worked for almost two decades in radiology performing CT scans and x-rays, Brenda Coe says taking over her father’s locksmith business in 2023 has been quite a change.

While the core business is different – medical versus mechanical –Coe said the same business and human principles apply: treat people with care and compassion during some of the most stressful times of their lives.

“When I stepped in after Dad’s passing, I somewhat knew the business but didn’t really know as much as I thought I did,” Coe said. “We had actually started talking about me working in the business part-time a year earlier and eventually taking it over, but when he died and Mom didn’t want to run the business, it was time for me to take over.

“Since then, it’s been a continuous learning experience. I am so glad I did it to honor my father’s legacy.”

Dan Whitaker started Able Locksmiths in 1984 out of his family home with a phone and a van, making himself available to clients, commercial and individual, at a moment’s notice 24/7, 365 days a year. Over the next 39 years, until his death in 2023, Whitaker grew the business to become a cornerstone of trusted security services in the region.

Coe said he picked the business name for marketing purposes at a time when the alphabet mattered.

“At the time, businesses were listed alphabetically in the Yellow Pages, so he chose a name that was near the front of the book – in the As – and something that was easy to remember,” she said.

Today, the business enjoys a reputation for precision, professionalism and unwavering dedication to customer safety. What truly sets Able Locksmiths apart is its rare blend of technical mastery and communityrooted values, a combination that has made it both unique and revered.

“We have great relationships with longtime clients, mostly on the commercial side, but we also make it a point to give great service to every

individual no matter their circumstances,” Coe said.

“We often encounter individuals at stressful times – they’re locked out of the house or the car or can’t find their keys. We all understand that, and try our best to be fast and courteous every time.”

Able Locksmiths offers a wide range of services addressing residential, commercial and automotive security. Services include lock installation and repair; key duplication and rekeying, and myriad automotive services including key fob replacements, transponder keys and emergency lockouts. In addition, the business provides services for safes and provides advanced security solutions for businesses, including electronic locks and security camera integration.

The staff’s versatility and technical expertise make Able Locksmiths a go-to for everything from basic lockouts to complex security upgrades. The company website and in-store consultations offer guidance on choosing the right security solutions, whether upgrading to smart locks or installing high-security safes.

“I’ve learned it’s the people that matter and who make a difference –employees, clients, everyone,” Coe said. “We will never know people’s story and what they are going through at any point, so it’s important that we treat everyone with dignity and respect.”

Coe said as a child, she helped in the family business, stamping keys and watching her parents, Dan and Jeanie, work together to grow and build the business. That experience, and observing her father’s approach, drives Coe and her staff to honor their commitment to authentic service.

“The locksmith business is still largely male-dominated, so when I took over the business, I was a bit unsure how I would be accepted, especially since many of the guys have worked here since I was a kid,” Coe said, “but they have welcomed and mentored me, and that makes doing this in Dad’s honor special every day.”

Boxer Barbeque

Boxer Barbeque

A TASTY COUNCIL BLUFFS STAPLE

With its blend of sweet, spicy and savory meats, Boxer Barbeque has been a food staple in Council Bluffs for almost 20 years.

After moving into a renovated historic building nearly six years ago — replete with a large banquet space on the second floor and a popular catering business — Boxer Barbeque has solidified itself as a go-to for great food in a unique atmosphere.

New owner Michael Nolan, who is returning after leaving several years ago as the restaurant’s chef, is excited to reconnect with old friends and take the restaurant in exciting directions.

“It’s great to be back,” said Nolan, who is buying the restaurant from owners Renae Dieatrick and Jeff Westbrook, who will stay on for the next couple of years. “Barbecue has long been my passion and the opportunity to get back into barbecue allows me to take things in several different ways without messing up the original.”

Ever since original owner Jim Mohatt opened the restaurant in 2007, Boxer Barbeque has made it imperative to create new ways to deliver amazing food and share experiences with customers and the local community. One way the restaurant accomplishes this is by purchasing only the best-quality certified Angus beef brisket and prime rib. The meats are dry-rubbed, then slow-smoked to lock in the moisture and create a distinctive, delicious flavor.

“We know some things are timeless,” Nolan said. “We’ve got you covered with items like our pulled pork sandwich and baby back ribs. From best-selling honey cornbread to signature sandwiches like the Happy Heifer, the Boxer Barbeque menu is

well-known and well-loved.”

Noland said no meal would be complete without dessert, and Boxer hits a home run with its deep-fried caramel apple bread pudding and brown butter cake – both of which are fan favorites.

In late 2019 Boxer Barbeque moved to its current location on South Main Street, in the heart of the historic Haymarket District in downtown Council Bluffs. While renovating the building — which dates back to the late 1880s and most recently served as office space — a mural painted on what was originally the outside wall of the building next door was uncovered. The mural was done by Thomas Cusack & Company in 1887 but had been hidden for more than a century behind plaster walls.

“The vibrant colors of the lettering help to create the comfortable and unique vibe of our dining room and banquet hall,” Nolan said.

Running the length of the dining room is a handmade live edge Boxer community table with seating for 24, and the upstairs banquet hall can comfortably seat up to 120 guests.

“It’s a great place to host a party, reunion, fundraiser — you name it,” Nolan added.

Boxer’s food and community impact haven’t gone unnoticed. In both 2022 and 2025, the restaurant was honored as the Best Restaurant in Pottawattamie County by the OMA Tourism Awards. For its work in renovating the historic building and helping revitalize the historic Haymarket District, Boxer Barbeque was recognized with the Community Beautification Award.

In 2024, the restaurant received the Quality Business Award for Best Barbecue Restaurant in Council Bluffs, based on 95%

customer satisfaction. Such accolades underscore how Boxer’s tagline “Unique, Unparalleled, and Unforgettable” isn’t just marketing. It’s a reflection of how deeply the restaurant is woven into the fabric of Council Bluffs.

“It’s not just a place to eat, it’s a place to gather, celebrate and savor the best of what Council Bluffs has to offer,” Nolan said. “My background is in mom-and-pop restaurants and I want to bring some of that here. I want to stay rooted in the history and essence of what Boxer Barbeque is and always has been while modernizing a few things.”

Synchronicity, Inc.

Carol Horner’s decision to take a leap of faith and start her own business occurred during an experiential learning conference in 1999. She went out on a sailboat to an uninhabited island off the Gulf of Mexico and by the time she was sailing back, she knew it was time.

“People may think I was brave to go out on my own but I never really had stability in past jobs as I was laid off 10 times for various reasons,” Horner said. “I had been thinking about doing it for a while and something during that boat ride told me it was the right time. But I knew I needed to go back home and do it in my hometown.”

A few weeks later, Horner moved back to Council Bluffs and opened Synchronicity, Inc. Since then she’s been a onewoman show, calling the shots while surviving and learning from the occasional pitfall to own and run her own successful business.

Synchronicity stands out as a transformative force in leadership development, team alignment and organizational growth. Horner’s boutique consulting firm helps companies, nonprofits and individuals “be in sync,” not just with each other but with their values, goals and potential.

Horner often relies upon her network of like businesses and business owners for guidance and advice, and they do the same.

“It’s a very collaborative group of women involved with leadership development and coaching, just like me,” said Horner. “In some ways, we’re each other’s biggest competition but we find we enjoy supporting each other more.”

Horner’s professional experience began in 1986 after

graduating from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in recreation therapy. A poor job market led her out of state to Texas for more than a decade before coming home to start her business

During this time, she discovered she had a love and talent for training and development. With Synchonicity she has the opportunity to affect positive and productive changes in people’s attitudes, behaviors and relationships.

“In Texas, I designed training curriculum for brain injuries and my interest in this area grew as the industry exploded,” she said. “From there, I stepped into the corporate world and got into corporate training and leadership development. I quickly knew this was my future.”

At its core, Synchronicity is a training and development consultancy that custom designs programs. Services include facilitation of workshops and retreats, executive coaching, custom learning programs and assessment tools. These tools help clients understand personality styles, build cohesive teams, and hire smarter, all while aligning people with purpose.

One of Synchronicity’s most unique contributions is the Spiral of Accountability, a visual framework created by

Horner in 2019. It simplifies the complex dynamics of human interpersonal interactions, helping individuals recognize patterns and shift toward more productive behaviors.

“A productive, high-functioning team is one that establishes trust between members, engages in conflict around ideas rather than emotions, commits to decisions together, holds each other accountable and focuses on achieving team results,” Horner said.

Synchronicity’s influence extends far beyond her hometown with clients across the Midwest and tools used internationally.

“To sustain, I don’t get mixed in my own muck,” she said. “I develop myself so I can help develop others. I believe I’ve been successful largely because I’ve stayed open to opportunity, and especially the opportunity to learn.”

Doing Well by Doing Good ROB TREBILCOCK HELPS IMPROVE COMMUNITIES THROUGH FUNDING, VOLUNTEER SUPPORT

Rob Trebilcock’s first dream was to play professional football, something he came tantalizingly close to achieving. Growing up in Canada, he excelled at the sport well enough to land a scholarship to Weber State University in Utah. From there, he made it to the Canadian Football League and the precipice of his long-held dream.

“After I got drafted to play professionally in Canada, I got hurt in training camp and decided I’m not going to be able to really enjoy my money if I can’t move,” he said with a dark chuckle. “So, I retired in camp without playing a professional down.”

The abrupt end to that chapter of life would be enough to knock anyone off-kilter, suddenly having to face what career to do next. In Trebilcock’s case, however, football had given him some skills valuable in the business world, not the least of which were hard work, teamwork and — quite literally — the ability to think on the fly, pivoting as needed to reach a goal. The only question was where to apply them.

“Well, I had to find a job, quick,” he said of that period. “At that time,

telemarketing was pretty popular, so I applied and they hired me and I kind of just moved my way up.”

Before long, Trebilcock had responsibility for business in Canada, India and the U.S., which led to a series of relocations as his career advanced. One such transfer brought him to Omaha, where he’d change companies after initially taking a call center supervisor job with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska. It was a move prompted by his family.

“The company I was with, I had traveled to India a couple of times,” he said. “My kids were at an impressionable age, and I was coaching them in sports and I didn’t want to miss out on anything. They were about to open another facility in the Philippines, which meant I would have to travel abroad even more and I didn’t want to do that anymore. I decided I needed a career change.”

While at BCBSNE, Trebilcock applied for and landed a job in the company’s marketing and public relations department. From there he worked in the nonprofit

Obviously, we hope that people will do business with us, but with that comes a responsibility to give back.

sector with United Way of the Midlands and Nebraska Children and Families Foundation, then returned to the corporate world in a public affairs job with Bank of the West, now Bank of Montreal.

All of these experiences added up to landing his current role with Cox Communications nearly five years ago, something he credits in part to the people he met and worked with along the way.

“I made some great, great connections, worked with some great people who were doing some great things working on collective impact,” he said. “They were people who shared my belief in always trying to do the right thing.”

“Public affairs” means different things in different companies. In his role, Trebilcock connects with communities in markets Cox serves to understand local needs and discover ways the company can help address those needs.

“The majority of my time in public affairs is spent around ways to give back to the community while at the same time elevating the Cox brand,” he said. “We do that in many different ways: financially, placing people on boards, putting people on committees. There’s our corporate volunteerism and how we show up in the community as well.”

Trebilcock said in addition to doing good for good’s sake, Cox’s list of community involvement, volunteerism and philanthropy is also good business practice.

“The bottom line is, if we are doing our job and doing what we should be doing and giving back, it makes a community a place where people want to live, thrive and grow their families, which has a reciprocal effect on businesses,” he said. “Obviously, we hope that people will do business with us, but with that comes a responsibility to give back and invest in the fabric of the community.”

In order to ensure that the company’s investment of time, talent and treasure is having maximum positive effect, Trebilcock spends a great deal of time as a liaison between Cox Communications and community stakeholders and groups throughout the company’s Nebraska and Iowa market areas.

“Our focus is youth, education and technology when we’re giving back to the community, but there are times when we don’t completely stay in those lanes,” he said. “Depending on need, we might do some things that promote sustainability or environmentally safe and friendly practices or conservation support.

“I spend a lot of time out in the community understanding needs and talking with leaders from different organizations about the work that they’re doing to see if there’s something that needs our support or our attention and whether we need to pivot because of something happening.”

Trebilcock said the diversity of his work experience, both in the for-profit and the

- ROB TREBILCOCK

nonprofit realms, has proven invaluable in the work that he does now.

“There are a lot of things that as a funder you don’t know what to look for in a nonprofit unless you’ve been in the trenches,” he said. “It can be something as basic as how they greet somebody or the way that they’re greeted by the staff. Nonprofits often serve the most vulnerable people in the community and the way they’re treated by the staff says a lot about that organization and can potentially tell you a little bit about where that organization’s going. It’s my responsibility to identify those things.”

When not working, Trebilcock devotes himself to his family including son Tré, who’s studying to be a journeyman electrician, and daughter Payton, an occupational therapist. Having not known one of his parents — Trebilcock’s mother died of leukemia when he was very young — he cherishes the time spent with his own children.

“I love those two very much; they are really amazing kids,” he said. “I’m very lucky to have them.”

How to Know if Franchise Ownership is Right for You

Even though I’m a franchise consultant, I have a surprising confession to make: franchising isn’t for everyone. Of course, this doesn’t prevent anyone from owning and operating a franchise but some people are simply more suited for it than others.

Basic premise of franchising Franchising has proliferated so well because franchises are predicated on proven business models that have been refined to replicate a product and/or service. Almost all of the franchise opportunities in the marketplace today require no prior experience — a nod to the training provided. Lastly, franchising prospers because of the close-knit support provided by corporate and its subsequent franchisee network.

Who is cut out for franchise ownership?

The type of person who usually thrives at franchise ownership is a person who understands the value of following systems and operations designed to ensure success. They’re people-oriented and good at networking. While they don’t necessarily need managerial experience, a good business mind is required. They also are known for being resilient and persistent in their goals with excellent follow-through after taking instruction and coaching from others. They don’t mind taking risks and have a community mindset when it comes to growth.

Who isn’t cut out for franchise ownership?

People who generally aren’t a good match for franchise ownership are typically free-spirited individuals who prefer to march to the beat of their own drummer. Obviously, there’s nothing wrong with that, but these “mavericks” are often thinkers, not necessarily doers. These are the type of people who prefer not to take direction from others because they would rather make all the decisions themselves.

How to tell where you stand?

The franchise investigative process typically begins with a personal assessment and those results should provide a clear answer as to whether franchise ownership is for you.

Blake Martin owns FranNet of the Heartland, an Omaha-based consultancy that provides no-cost, no-obligation franchise consulting for entrepreneurs and those involved in career transitions to help them establish business ownership of their own. THE FRANCHISEE:

Q&A:

Tell us about the business model of your franchise. Mathnasium is a math-only learning center where we help kids catch up, keep up and get ahead. We work with students from pre-K through precalculus, meeting the students where they are in their math journey and working through individualized learning plans to help them succeed.

Why did you choose this industry?

I have always enjoyed teaching math and running a business.

Why did you choose this franchise?

So many reasons: founders, method, corporate team, commitment to quality, caring for kids, families and teachers, materials, training, etc., are all excellent.

What was the process of starting your franchise?

In-person and online training with the corporate team, building out the physical space and marketing services to schools and community connections. I personally also worked at an existing Mathnasium during our buildout so I could learn as much as possible prior to opening.

What challenges have you faced?

The biggest is lack of familiarity with the brand. Even in our sixth year on a busy highway, people often don’t know we exist. Second to that is the distance between our country’s current level of math competence and common perceptions of that level of competence.

What have been your biggest wins?

Seeing so many of our students truly come to understand how very capable they are not only of doing math, but of facing and overcoming any difficult challenges they meet in life. Another huge win is seeing our instructors move on to succeed in college and begin their careers.

How have you grown?

I had worked with adults most of my career and working with kids has been humbling and wonderful. They are so very much fun, so wise and so kind. They teach me every bit as much as I teach them.

What does the future hold?

We’re on a mission to help more kids feel good about math. Every interaction with every instructor and student creates a ripple. Those ripples are joining together to make the world a better place.

It doesn’t make headlines, it doesn’t come with flashy perks or buzzwords, but $0 preventive drug coverage is a quiet strategy that can make a tangible difference for employees and employers alike. It’s also a shift from reactive care to a proactive approach, one that can help workers stay well, stay productive and stay loyal. In a landscape where employee expectations are rising and budgets are tight, that kind of return on investment is hard to ignore.

Removing barriers, reinforcing care

Preventive medications play a critical role in managing chronic conditions and helping stop new ones from emerging but for employees on tight budgets, even modest copays can be a problem. Numerous studies show that nearly 25% of Americans who take prescription medications say it’s difficult to afford them yet potentially catastrophic if they don’t stick with their prescribed medications. A 2024 study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association makes the case clear: When employees adhere to their prescribed medications, the ripple effects are measurable in less sick days and more than $1,400 in lower medical costs per person each year. Multiply that across even a modest-sized company, and it’s hard not to see the impact.

Another point to consider: In today’s competitive labor market, benefits matter. Employees who feel supported by their health plan — especially when it comes to managing long-term conditions — typically report higher satisfaction and are more likely to stick around.

The strategy behind the signal

Offering $0 preventive drug coverage is a strong start, but pair it with wellness programs, digital tools, coaching and regular checkups and you send a powerful message. When employees see their employer is invested in keeping them well — not just treating them when they’re sick — it builds trust and trust builds engagement. In that sense, $0 coverage isn’t only a perk, it’s a signal that says health is a priority, not an afterthought.

What sets Medica apart

Plenty of health plans offer some level of drug coverage but few offer the wide

The Power of Prevention

range of $0 preventive medications that we do. It’s all part of our overall approach. We’re a nonprofit with more than 50 years of experience and we put people first. That shows in the details:

• $0 medical and Rx deductibles on a wide range of preventive medications, including insulin, antidepressants, statins and much more

• Low copays for specialist visits

• Integrated care teams that support chronic condition management

• Digital tools and wellness incentives that reinforce healthy habits

It’s a model built for today’s demands and it aligns with employee expectations and employer goals.

The bottom line: Preventive drug coverage is more than a checkbox on a benefits form. It’s a strategy that helps build a healthier, more productive workforce while controlling costs.

Framing Future AI Demand

AI bubble talk is rising and possibly for good reason this time. The numbers that have come out over recent weeks are truly breathtaking. OpenAI’s CEO said that he wants to spend trillions of dollars on data center construction in the “not very distant future”. The CEO of Alibaba said that AI spending worldwide could hit $4 trillion in the next five years. Mark Zuckerberg said that he’d rather risk misspending a couple of hundred billion than be late to superintelligence, which is like previous comments from Alphabet’s CEO. After Nvidia and OpenAI announced a strategic partnership to build and deploy at least 10 GW (gigawatts) of AI data centers, Elon Musk proclaimed that he will be the first to 10 GW. The race is on, but what is the destination?

AI investments are much larger and being deployed faster than we ever anticipated. It’s natural for investors to wonder if things are getting out of hand. Just understand that the public’s knowledge on AI progress and potential is limited. Unlike the tech CEOs that are at the front lines making these game-changing investments, we don’t know what’s happening in their secret AI labs and what they believe this new spending will unlock. However, the amount of wealth that many of these founders and CEOs have helped create is unprecedented. Even Warren Buffett credited Apple’s CEO Tim Cook with “making a lot more money than I’ve ever made” for Berkshire Hathaway.

Our point is that many have proven to be incredibly smart allocators of capital with a track record of success. The fact that they are increasing their already enormous bets on AI shouldn’t just elicit skepticism but also excitement and curiosity. It’s puzzling to us that the same investors that will blindly follow Warren Buffett into a new investment are so quick to dismiss the decisions of a Jensen Huang (CEO of Nvidia), Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft) or Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Meta).

The ultimate question is, How large will the future market for AI become? Currently, spending on information technology represents less than 6% of global sales. However, the promise of AI is that it can help automate or supplement just about every corporate function. One way to frame this is to look at the total operating costs for firms in the S&P 500. According to FactSet, these companies produced $17.5 trillion in sales over the past 12 months at roughly a 17% pre-tax margin. From there, we can extrapolate that operating costs represent 83% of their sales, or about $14.5 trillion annually. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that labor can account for as much as 70% of total business costs. Of course, this will vary by industry but applying that percentage to $14.5 trillion of annual operating costs creates just over a $10 trillion annual opportunity in just labor costs alone for S&P 500 firms. It is arguably unlike an opportunity that the world has ever seen before, which we think explains why current AI investment levels appear so stunning and unbelievable.

We believe our society is on the verge of incredible and exciting change. There remain many questions regarding where we’re heading and what that means for the future of many things, including work. Historically, every new technology has improved our lives for the better. Of course, some of this has come with a cost, but as a French philosopher once said, “When you invent the ship, you also invent the shipwreck”.

MIDLANDS LEADERS q&a

SARA WILSON, PRESIDENT, SMITH KROEGER

Midlands Leaders is a weekly section showcasing individuals who are making an impact in the community through their professional and volunteer endeavors. To nominate someone for this section, email news@mbj.com with the individual’s name, position, company and email.

SARA WILSON

Bio:

Bellevue native Sara Wilson leads Smith Kroeger, a full-service marketing agency, as president. Following graduation from the University of NebraskaLincoln, she began her career in Washington, D.C. at a leading PR and branding firm. In her current role she leads a diverse team of strategists, creatives, media specialists and digital experts serving national brands, regional institutions and community organizations alike.

In addition to her professional responsibilities, she has served on the Aksarben Floor Committee for six years, chairing it for two and sat on the legislative committee of the American Advertising Federation, Nebraska Chapter for two years. Wilson has been featured in multiple publications and was named to Midlands Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 in 2020.

What advice would you offer to people starting out in this business, especially young women?

To anyone starting out in marketing, advertising, media or PR, my advice is to start raising your hand. When opportunities come up, volunteer. People remember the ones who show initiative and over time, that willingness leads to bigger projects, more trust and new opportunities.

What led you to this particular field?

I come from a Navy family and started college as an international studies major, planning for a career in intelligence. Once I got into the coursework, it was hard to picture what that path would really look like and where it would take me. I wanted something that provided a more concrete career path.

I had friends in the advertising program at UNL, and the more I learned about it, the more it felt like the right fit. I was lucky to inherit strengths from both a very analytical father and a very creative mother, and marketing and advertising struck me as the perfect blend of both.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your work, day in and day out?

The media landscape has changed for everyone who watches TV, uses social media or listens to the radio — streaming or otherwise. This has led to an increasingly complex media buying business, which Smith Kroeger specializes in, so it’s part of my work day in and day out. There are increased opportunities for companies to track how their media buys perform against sales and other key performance indicators, which leads to being able to optimize budgets and get more transparency than ever before.

The hard part is that not everything is trackable; it’s tempting to put all your dollars where attribution is clear, like a Google Ad click leading directly to someone buying something or submitting a contact form. But over-relying on attributable tactics risks overlooking the impact of media that’s less trackable — think billboards, TV, and radio or social ads you see but don’t click on.

Brand visibility, trust and reach across different touchpoints still matter a great deal, even if they’re harder to tie to a single metric. Balancing those levers and recommendations is a challenge but also an opportunity to test things and achieve better results. That’s the work.

MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love learning new things, and I love solving problems. My work introduces me to leaders across industries, people tackling everything from counterterrorism and solar energy to economic development. Some are selling big things like cars, homes and furniture; others are selling everyday items like lottery tickets, gallons of gas or holiday decor.

On the surface, these businesses couldn’t be more different, but at their core, they share the same drive of finding ways to meet their customers’ needs. Being part of that process — digging into what they do, why they do it and how we can help them connect more effectively — is both energizing and deeply rewarding.

2025 MIDLANDS Business Journal NOTABLE SERIES

Midlands Business Journal is proud to launch an ongoing series called Notable. At companies across the Omaha metro, notable executives are running businesses, navigating company restructurings, serving on boards, leading marketing departments and contributing to the growth of their companies throughout the region. This ongoing series will feature best-in-class executives, who often fly under the radar, across a range of industries. The notable individuals profiled in these categories are nominated by their peers at work and in the community.

2025 MIDLANDS Business Journal NOTABLE WOMEN

MBJ’s first Notable profiles will recognize women in commercial real estate. They manage millions of dollars in acquisitions, oversee ever-expanding portfolios of properties and guide tenants through the process of finding the ideal space for a thriving business. They also give back to their communities, create more inclusive teams and mentor individuals entering the commercial real estate industry. The special section will recognize individuals for their success and accomplishments during the past 12 to 18 months.
