LETTER FROM THE editor

To Those in the Community Making it Better

Dear Readers:

Houston Alexander stood before the crowd at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Aspire to Inspire awards on Jan. 16 and said something worth remembering: “This award doesn’t go to just me. It goes to anyone in this community who’s putting in the work toward making this community better.”

He was one of three recipients honored that day, alongside Douglas County Commissioner Roger Garcia and Lt. Antwone Finch of the Omaha Police Department. The ceremony, co-hosted by Douglas County and the City of Omaha, annually recognizes people who exemplify King’s vision of diversity, inclusivity and equality. But Alexander’s comment resonated beyond the room because it applies to more than public servants and community activists. It applies to the businesses featured in this week’s issue.

Take Greg Lindberg at Absolutely Fresh Seafood. When he started selling shrimp out of the back of a truck at 70th and Dodge streets, he could have cut corners. Instead, he paid a health inspector $57 per stop to verify his product. That wasn’t charity or community service in the traditional sense, but it was an investment in trust — proving to skeptical Nebraskans that buying seafood from a truck wasn’t crazy. That decision built credibility that now supports 167 employees across three Shucks locations and the Absolutely Fresh Seafood market.

Or consider the Whelan brothers, who participate in neighborhood cleanups in the Bemis Park area, hauling away furniture for residents without transportation. They didn’t start Whelans Lawn & Landscaping to become community organizers. They started it because their parents insisted they work and stay productive. But as the business grew from three teenagers mowing lawns to a company employing 70 people during peak season, they understood that being part of Omaha meant showing up for more than just paying clients.

Kyle Johnson built CCA Home Care around a question: What would Grandma Johnson want? It’s a remarkably simple framework for a health care business, but it works because it centers on the actual humans involved rather than industry best practices. His CNAs work with clients wherever they need help: homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities, memory care communities. The flexibility Johnson built into his business model makes in-home care affordable without sacrificing quality, which matters when you’re serving elderly Omahans who deserve better than what’s easy.

Christopher Vilim at CoreTech and Brandon Zobel at ProsperSpark both understand something similar: technology should serve people, not confuse them. Vilim’s team explains solutions in plain language because clients shouldn’t need a translator to understand their own IT systems. Zobel quit his job with nothing but a logo and a belief that he could build something better than consulting firms that charge $20,000 for a document. Seven years later, ProsperSpark serves 500 clients in 47 states.

Susan Evans at The Omaha Home Staging Co. invested in high-end furnishings from national markets when she could have staged homes sparsely to save money. That choice — quality over expedience — has built a business that’s now scaling to stage many homes per week.

These aren’t grand gestures. They’re choices that happen daily in businesses across Omaha. Garcia urged attendees at the MLK ceremony to “steer your heart toward love.” In business terms, that means steering toward what serves your community rather than what’s merely easiest for your bottom line.

From Truck to Table A KID FROM

POINT TRANSFORMS

Growing up in West Point, Greg Lindberg had no idea how a taste of fresh shrimp would change his life. It would lead him to start Absolutely Fresh Seafood market and Shucks in Omaha.

As a youth, his parents sponsored Lien Nguyen and his family, Vietnamese refugees as a result of the Vietnam War. After experiencing Midwestern winters, they relocated to New Orleans.

Life-changing visit

After buying a shrimp boat, Nguyen fished the Gulf of Mexico. During a visit with his Nebraska friends, Nguyen brought two coolers of shrimp.

“We’re sitting on my mom’s back porch and they said, ‘Here’s some fresh shrimp,’” Lindberg said. “Holy Toledo! I don’t know why, but a (virtual) lightbulb came on, and they were driving up every couple of weeks with fresh shrimp.”

Lindberg set up camp at 70th and Dodge streets, selling seafood out of the back of a truck. Business took off.

Adding additional trucks, Lindberg sold fresh shrimp across the metro. The business grew to 50 trucks, expanding to central Nebraska and southwest Iowa. He also delivered shrimp to independent grocery markets.

Quality product

To ensure quality and safety, Lindberg paid a health inspector $57 per stop to check the products.

“We had to have that frequency, to have confidence, because we’re selling shrimp on the side of the road,” he said. “Come on! Maybe you would buy a pair of socks, but would you buy seafood from a truck? And we’re in Nebraska. All these strikes against us, but I believed in the product.”

SCENE Absolutely Fresh Seafood

The inspector proved to be a game changer, suggesting Lindberg store shrimp in a refrigerated warehouse, requiring only an annual inspection.

Another victory involved a chef stopping by and sampling the product. He hired Lindberg to supply fresh shrimp. Lindberg added more restaurants. Expanding his inventory to include items such as oysters and snapper, the distribution company continued growing.

Opening seafood market

In 2002, Lindberg set his sights on a struggling fish market, which offered lunch. Lindberg bought the space and began a wine and oystershucking night. It became wildly popular.

Adding the bay next door, Shucks Fish House and Oyster Bar opened in 2006. Flying in fresh seafood from Seattle, San Francisco, New Orleans and Florida created a unique menu, Lindberg said.

“I swore I’d never get into the restaurant business,” Lindberg said. “I was selling to hundreds of restaurants. But they can go broke. It’s just a fact.”

He’d like to add at least one more Shucks. Lindberg owns three Shucks locations and Bailey’s Breakfast & Lunch.

Employee ownership

Lindberg has ensured the company remains locally owned by creating an employee stock option program.

“That’s my fear,” Lindberg said. “What happens to all these guys that made me the money? What happens to them? I care about that.”

Looking back at that first shrimp day on his mother’s porch, Lindberg said he has advice for his younger self.

“Work in the industry, make sure you learn, even if you don’t like doing it that way,” he said.

The Omaha Home Staging Co.

Vision of Home

TURNING ‘BEFORE’ HOUSES INTO ‘AFTERS’

Susan Evans realized the power of home staging when she accompanied her husband, a real estate agent, to a new-home showcase.

“The first home we went to was a staged model home, and I thought it looked incredible; I was going on and on about how great this house was. Then we went to several other houses in that neighborhood. None of them were staged, and we went to one more that was just empty,” she said. “My husband, Marty, said, ‘Well, what do you think of this house?’ And I said, ‘You know, it’s OK, but that model home was so amazing. I like it so much better.’

“And he looked at me and said, ‘Susan, this is the same builder. This is the same house and floor plan, just not staged.’”

Lightbulb moment

That “lightbulb moment,” Evans said, planted the seed for The Omaha Home Staging Co., which she launched after successfully staging listings for her husband.

“Every house I was staging for him was selling right away,” she said. “Other Realtors in his office said, ‘Hey, we want to use you for staging, too.’ So, that’s how it started.”

Evans’ degree in business and marketing was put to good use when she became an entrepreneur, as was her natural creative side.

“I’ve always had a passion for design,” she said. “I think when a buyer walks into the house, staging creates a sense of home and gives buyers a sense of how they could live in the house. Staging is more of an elevated look ... It kind of gives the home a wow factor.”

Evans, whose business has been named Omaha Magazine’s Best of Omaha all six years since the home staging category was added, said a primary reason The Omaha Home Staging Co. stands out is the quality of the furnishings and accents she’s invested in.

Nothing but the best

“I got a wholesale license, and I started going to the national furniture and home decor markets,” she said. “I started buying from national vendors to try and set myself apart so my staging would have more of a unique, higher-end look.”

That also means she never stages sparsely to cut corners, she added.

“I’d seen staged model homes, but I had to educate Realtors and homeowners on what the staging process was and the value staging would bring,” she said. “Fifteen years ago, there was no Instagram. Now I have the benefit of being able to put before-and-after photos of staging, before-and-after videos.”

Now Evans has set the stage for further growth.

“I would say the next big goal is to continue to scale the business. When I first started, I wore all the hats. I did the marketing. I did the warehouse. I went to every house to preview it for staging. I did all the packing,” she said. “Now, I have a 4,000-square-foot warehouse. I have my staging brand. I have my team. I have good relationships with area Realtors, so I’m working on scale now where we can do more houses per week.”

BRANDON ZOBEL, OWNER

Spreading Beyond Excel PROSPERSPARK BRINGS CUSTOM SOLUTIONS TO LIFE

Brandon Zobel enjoys effecting change with technology. Give him a spreadsheet and he’ll create a masterpiece. Little did he know that spreadsheets would launch him on a new trajectory.

“My ‘aha moment’ came when I was helping a coworker with a spreadsheet,” Zobel said. “They said, ‘You should just do this all the time.’ I was like, ‘I should do this all the time.’ I walked in to my boss’ office and just said, ‘Here’s my resignation.’”

Zobel launched ProsperSpark in 2018, a company by which he doesn’t just help clients with creating rows and columns, he paints works of art.

“Let’s say you were calculating commission rates,” Zobel said. “You could feed in a different percentage or have it be logic driven or complex logic driven, like it’s this percent for this person and this percent for that person, but only on these deals.”

Initially focusing on Excel spreadsheets, the company has since grown to use technology to automate business systems and tools, offering flexibility within clients’ operations, Zobel said. ProsperSpark consultants create systems that allow information to flow from one application to another, even filling in information, creating records and invoices.

“We can take on any number of situations,” he said. “We consult on a few specific systems that we either build, maintain or fix, such as Salesforce.”

Spreadsheets to new level

ProsperSpark consultants invite client challenges when it comes to creating systems.

“We build all sorts of solutions, whether it be a CRM (customer relationship management) on Airtable or a project management tool as a way to track hours, such as a construction firm that has people out in the field and wants to track hours,” Zobel said.

The company creates documents to fit clients’ needs, Zobel said.

“That can mean a simple tracking spreadsheet that you want help building, or it could be something more complex, where you have 50 tabs in a really large financial model spreadsheet you’re using to calculate,” he said. “One of our largest clients is in the real estate valuation business, so they evaluate what properties are worth. Those transactions are not a couple thousand dollars, they are in the millions, or sometimes even nearing billions of dollars.”

ProsperSpark builds the solutions, fixes existing issues and provides support, Zobel said.

“We don’t just give you a strategy,” he said. “You hear stories of consulting firms charging $20,000 and all the client got was a document. We’re not that company.”

500 clients, 47 states

Seven years after coming home to his wife, Blair, and telling her he quit his job and was going to start his own company with nothing more than a logo, Zobel said the company serves 500 clients in 47 states. Everything from mom-and-pop businesses to Ivy League colleges receives personalized attention, he said. ProsperSpark is also on the verge of launching a new program in the coming weeks to reach its goal of being able to offer clients easier ways to engage with the company.

“You can come to us and describe what you want for automation for a monthly fee,” Zobel said. “You can quit anytime, so that means we are taking on all the risk. We are fronting all the costs. We’re going to not only design and build it, we’re going to maintain it and fix it. So if you have an error, you’re covered.”

Zobel said his best advice for someone thinking about or currently owning their own business is to be OK with failure.

“I’m extremely competitive. I don’t like to lose,” he said, “but failure is how you learn. Literally, no one on planet Earth has all the answers to everything.”

Whelans Lawn & Landscaping

Chores to Company SIBLINGS TURN LAWN CARE INTO THRIVING COMPANY

What started as a simple summer side hustle before high school has grown into one of Omaha’s most recognized landscaping companies. Whelans Lawn & Landscaping, founded by brothers Jonathan, Eric and Sean Whelan in 2006, was born out of a strong work ethic instilled by their parents.

“We started before high school; my parents always made sure we were working and staying productive,” Sean said. “They owned several properties, so we were constantly helping with remodeling, maintenance or lawn care. Eventually, we figured if we were going to work anyway, we might as well turn it into something of our own.”

The brothers began mowing lawns in their neighborhood for extra cash, laying the foundation for what would later become a full-service lawn and landscaping business.

Growing pains, pivotal moments

As the company expanded, the Whelans had to learn not only how to grow a business but how to do so as siblings.

“One of the biggest turning points was transitioning from being owner-operators, doing the work ourselves, to managing a team,” Sean said. “Hiring staff and stepping into leadership roles was challenging but essential to scaling the business.”

That shift allowed the company to diversify its services and reach a broader client base across Omaha, taking on everything from turf maintenance to large-scale landscaping and snow operations.

Building community roots

The company’s reputation has been built as much on community connection as on craftsmanship.

“Many of our clients have known us since we were kids, mowing lawns before we could even drive,” Sean said. “It’s rewarding to see those

long-term relationships evolve, watching their families grow as they’ve watched our business grow.”

The Whelans also make it a point to give back locally through neighborhood cleanups. “In previous years, we’ve participated in the Bemis Park area cleanup, where we helped haul away large items like old furniture for residents who didn’t have the means to transport them,” Sean said.

Innovation and integrity

Neither of the brothers’ parents worked in landscaping, so their company was built entirely from the ground up.

“What really sets us apart is Eric’s commitment to mastering every new service we offer,” Sean said. “Whether it’s irrigation systems, holiday lighting or new landscaping materials, he immerses himself in the learning process before training the rest of the team.”

A key milestone came when the company expanded into landscaping and completed its first rooftop paver patio at the Federal Reserve Bank, a project that opened the door to more commercial and custom design work. Through it all, Sean said, the most valuable lesson has been simple but vital: “The customer always comes first. Learning how to communicate professionally and build trust has been key to our success.”

Today, Whelans Lawn & Landscaping employs 26 full-time workers year-round and scales up to about 70 during peak seasons. After a brief stint in corporate leadership, Sean returned to the business with new insight.

“Don’t be afraid to step away, learn and grow,” he said. “You can always bring that experience home.”

HR CONSULTANT EMPHASIZES THE HUMAN IN HUMAN RESOURCES

Dulce Sherman founded Sherman Executive Consulting after nearly 30 years as a human resources leader for businesses and nonprofits. She brings many extras to the table from being Spanish/ English bilingual to decades of community service experience on numerous organizational boards including Girls Inc., Latino Center of the Midlands and Millard Public Schools Foundation.

But Sherman’s deep level of caring is perhaps her most valuable and meaningful asset.

“As an HR professional you need to have empathy and compassion in addition to business sense,” she said.

Sherman also honors her youngest son through her people-first approach. In 2020, she lost 20-year-old Jonathan to suicide.

“I was laid off by my employer when I returned from bereavement leave. Starting my HR consulting business was a way to heal and live his legacy of caring for others,” she said. “It was also a way to address a problem that I saw in small businesses or nonprofits.”

Sherman had witnessed and experienced a situation common to smaller organizations: leaders taking on numerous roles, including managing the complexities of HR, and the need for support from experienced professionals was evident.

“I thought it would be ideal for me to come in and say, ‘You need to need to go (promote) the business, raise money and let me do HR for you,’” Sherman said.

Remote beginnings

The beginnings of Sherman Executive Consulting coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, and providing services remotely helped make it

possible for the grieving

to retreat from in-person interaction when needed.

“I could do a lot of Zoom meetings and always wasn’t on camera, or I could do phone calls,” she said. “About a year into my business, I realized that there was a need for an interim executive director role; I saw a lot of nonprofits having transition, and so I thought, ‘Why don’t I do that, too?’”

Her business is still growing, with Sherman now offering services from strategic planning to fundraising to establishing personnel policies. One specialty area close to her heart is guiding employers in supporting workers after loss.

People-first approach

“It made me think about how I can help educate employers so that they can be more compassionate with how they handle situations like this. So, bereavement leave, can we change that to more compassionate leave instead of the three days that you expect people to go to the funeral, get over their grief and then come back to work 100%?” she said.

The human side of business is what distinguishes great businesses and leaders, Sherman said.

“The way you’re going to attract and retain people is through the programs that keep them there, that show that you really care about them, not only when they’re at work, but what happens to them before they come to work or when they leave the job,” she said. “When you start taking care of your employees, they’re going to be loyal, they’re going to want to stay. And that does add value to the bottom line.”

CoreTech

CoreTech at 25 CELEBRATING INNOVATION, SERVICE AND TECHNOLOGY

What began as a family venture during the turbulence of the early 2000s tech bubble has grown into one of Omaha’s most trusted IT service providers. CoreTech, founded in July 2000 by Christopher Vilim and his father, Larry, was born out of necessity but quickly evolved into a purpose-driven business focused on helping clients adapt to a rapidly changing digital landscape.

“CoreTech was founded by my father and me, along with two business associates who helped fund the startup,” said Vilim, now CEO. “Before that, we both worked at another technology firm during the Y2K era. When that company dissolved after the tech bubble burst, we saw an opportunity to continue serving our smallbusiness clients.”

Over the past 25 years, that adaptability has been CoreTech’s constant. Some of its clients have been with the company since the 1990s, long before the term “managed IT services” became common. As their needs evolved from basic support to cybersecurity, cloud computing and AI integration, CoreTech evolved, too.

“Building this company alongside my father for 16 years before he retired was incredibly meaningful,” Vilim said.

Client-first, jargon-free

Flexibility is another hallmark. Unlike competitors that lock clients into rigid service packages, CoreTech offers customizable options that scale with each company’s growth.

“That flexibility allows us to serve startups and larger, more established organizations alike,” Vilim said. “We can help a small

business get started and then scale with them as they grow, all without needing to switch IT providers.”

Committed to community

Giving back is a core part of CoreTech’s identity. The company regularly donates to local nonprofits and community causes that reflect both employee and client values.

“Instead of client holiday gifts, we often make donations to local nonprofits like the Siena Francis House or participate in drives through the Omaha Community Foundation,” Vilim said.

After a quarter-century in business, Vilim said the company’s success comes from staying focused and learning from others.

“My biggest advice is to pick a focus and stick with it,” he said. “Do one thing exceptionally well before chasing new ideas. I’ve learned the hard way how easy it is to get distracted by shiny objects.”

He also encourages curiosity and collaboration.

“You don’t have to figure everything out alone,” Vilim said. “Most people are happy to share their experiences and help you avoid their mistakes. That’s advice I give my own kids: don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

Productivity and protection

The company is investing heavily in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity to enhance productivity and protection for clients. “AI won’t replace people; it will enhance productivity and efficiency,” Vilim said. “It’s the most transformative technology shift we’ve seen in our 25 years, and we’re excited to help clients harness it.”

CCA Home Care

No Place Like Home

In 1990, elderly Americans accounted for 12 percent of the population, or about 32 million people. While it was common to move elderly parents into nursing homes, Rose Ann Opperman and Virginia Williams had another idea. They founded Care Consultants for the Aging, one of the first such companies in the nation.

Kyle Johnson is an entrepreneur by nature and loved the CCA story, so in 2017, he purchased it from Williams’ family. Two years later, he rebranded the senior citizen at-home care company to CCA Home Care.

“I love the industry that we work in,” Johnson said. “I love knowing that we can care for our elderly and aging. I saw this as a great opportunity to get into a quickly growing industry and have it locally owned. There was no corporate entity involved.”

Learning from grandma

Lacking a background in health care or home care, Johnson developed the company based on what a typical family might want when it comes to in-home care for a relative.

“I didn’t know what I didn’t know,” he said. “I didn’t have a preconceived notion of ‘This is what we did at another company’ or ‘This is what my parents experienced by having a home care company.’

“Basically, I came in with no idea of what it was going to take to be successful. We do what’s right, not what’s easy, and we just kept making decisions based on, ‘Well, that’s what my Grandma Johnson would want. That’s the type of person that my Grandma Johnson would want in her house.’”

Flexible model

CCA Home Care contracts with certified nursing assistants rather than hire full-time permanent employees to provide clients companionship, medication reminders and transportation to appointments among other services.

“They come into our office, we interview them, we screen them,” he said. “They have to be licensed, insured. We carry theft coverage if there was ever theft in the home. What that does is offer a huge benefit for the client.

“They can negotiate their pay rates that most other agencies won’t allow. We have the opportunity to create a very flexible solution for the family. We’re the most affordable option in the industry.”

Providing care in any setting

The CNAs work with clients wherever they’re needed, Johnson said.

“They are going into the home, and the home is wherever their head lies,” he said. “We have some clients right now who are in the hospital who still need home care because there’s anxiety in a hospital setting. Caregivers will actually go work with the client in a hospital, assisted living, independent living, memory care communities, skilled nursing facilities, anywhere that the client needs help.”

Looking back over the journey, Johnson said he’d offer advice to anyone in the health care marketplace — even though he lacks patience — that, and thinking from the patient’s perspective are keys to success.

“Anybody who knows me knows I am not patient, and I don’t know everything. I never will,” Johnson said, “but my advice is to give things some time and just let it happen.”

Ask the Expert FCC-FUNDED DISCOUNTS FOR

How do we know if we’re eligible for FCC-funded discounts up to 65% for IT-related services?

Did you know there is a federal program for public and nonprofit health-related businesses that helps cover the costs of telecommunications services including IT and cybersecurity?

Organizations and facilities that provide health care services may already be familiar with the FCC’s Healthcare Connect Fund, part of the larger Rural Health Care Program, which offers eligible health care providers a significant discount, up to 65%, on connectivity, IT, and cybersecurity-related services to improve care access.

But many community health centers, community mental health centers and skilled nursing facilities using the FCC’s program — managed through the USAC (Universal Service Administrative Company) via the RHC Connect portal — only apply it to part of what’s eligible. Some of these organizations and facilities don’t know there are often additional IT and cybersecurity costs that can be covered. Others aren’t taking advantage of this funding at all.

That’s where American PCS comes in. As a registered USAC service provider, we can verify whether your organization qualifies for RHC funds and what may be covered for you. To qualify, applicants must be a public or nonprofit entity; and must be a community health center or health center providing health care to migrants, a local health department or agency, a community mental health center, a not-for-profit hospital, a rural health clinic, a dedicated emergency room of a rural for-profit hospital, a skilled nursing facility, a post-secondary educational institution offering health care instruction, or part of a consortium of health care providers that includes at least one of the aforementioned facilities.

If the applicant is not in a rural location as defined by the FCC, they may be able to apply as a member of a majority rural member consortium. American PCS can help you determine if your organization or facility meets these requirements.
