City creates Hotel Occupation Tax Reinvestment Program

The City of Omaha is creating the Hotel Occupation Tax Reinvestment Program to encourage construction of upscale hotels by allowing developers to use transient rental guest tax revenue to reimburse eligible development costs. Per the Omaha Municipal Code, the transient rental guest tax totals 5.5% of the gross charge for hotel occupancy. Qualifying hotel parameters include the hotel being new to market; upper-upscale, defined as a Four Diamond rating or better under the AAA hotel rating scale; and located within half a mile of a city-owned cultural or entertainment facility. Nebraska currently has only two AAA Four Diamond hotels, both in Omaha: the Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel in the Blackstone District and the Farnam Autograph Collection located downtown.

Nebraska’s Business Innovation Act gets boost

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has announced a boost in funding and a new direction for the Business Innovation Act, an initiative that has provided funding to Nebraska businesses since it was enacted in 2011. Programs under the BIA were placed on a brief pause during the last quarter of 2025 for a performance review by the Department of Economic Development. In late December the announcement was made of Pillen’s directive that the requested appropriation to the Legislature for BIA programs in 2025-2027 increase from approximately $12 million to $15 million beginning in FY 2026-2027, and that future funding for the program be less reliant on general funds.

SHERIFF AARON HANSON ON BEES, PRINCIPLES AND LEADERSHIP

Aaron Hanson was elected the 30th sheriff of Douglas County in November 2022. In 2025 alone, his department hired a youth and family specialist and launched programs to assist unhoused individuals and pets in need. He also began a dialog with the League of United Latin American Citizens Nebraska to ensure county immigration enforcement upholds public safety and human dignity.

When he isn’t on the job, however, he can often be found on his property in northwest Omaha.

You’ve recently gotten into beekeeping. Why that particular activity and what is it about beekeeping that interests you so much?

I recently purchased an acreage in Ponca Hills, which was my life dream. I spent the second half of my childhood and teens living at my dad’s fixerupper acreage in Ponca Hills and I always wanted to have an acreage of my own.

I have a friend who is a journeyman beekeeper. The way it works in the beekeeping world is you don’t just get into it and fumble your way through it — or bumble your way through it — you are trained by a journeyman beekeeper. My friend Steve brought two of his beehives out to my acreage. We had a very good first year. We harvested three gallons of honey just off two beehives.

It’s a nice way to hit the reset button when you’re enjoying a cold Busch Light sitting on an upside-down bucket, looking at these bees and realizing that they are maybe some of the most efficient, effective teams that we have on earth. We could learn a lot from bees. Each has a job; there’s police officer bees, there’s nurse bees, there’s HVAC bees, there’s mortician bees. They all work together as a team.

Being a beekeeper, your goal is not just to harvest honey. Your goal is to support the singular queen. It’s very humbling, especially being in a highstress job, realizing that here we are on this rock hurtling around the sun and then down at the granular level is this beehive operating as their own selfsufficient little community.

I like to talk about the bees because I think people need to change the way that they manicure their yards, the pesticides and herbicides that we put on. I look at dandelions completely differently now as a beekeeper. Now, I cherish dandelions. I don’t spray them. When we poison the dandelions we’re poisoning our bees and we need the bees to survive.

What was your first memory of wanting to be in law enforcement?

I had never wanted to go into law enforcement. My dad was a chemist whose job was environmental protection for the Douglas County landfill. I wanted to be a hydrologist; my major was going to be geology.

Then I got a job in high school catching shoplifters at the old Shopko and started to work with off-duty officers. I got bit by the bug and tested for the police department when I was 21. Didn’t make it the first time, tested when I was 22, and did get hired. I’ve loved it ever since.

Both of my brothers followed my footsteps into law enforcement. One’s a captain with the Omaha Police Department, one’s an officer who’s worked the Northeast precinct midnight shift for 25 years. My daughter wants to be a police officer. So I was on the front end of making it a family trait.

After 26.5 years with the Omaha Police Department and then as sheriff, how has your approach to law enforcement evolved?

Sheriffs are the physical arm of the court system, whereas municipal police are not. When judges issue an order or warrant, that’s where their

We could learn a lot from bees. I wish us Homo sapiens would act more like bees. Each has a job … They all work together as a team.

duty ends and the sheriff agency’s obligation begins. That order is only as good as the government’s ability to enforce it. Sheriff’s offices are essentially the U.S. Marshals equivalent of state government for the court system.

Sheriff’s offices, because they are commanded by an elected sheriff, are typically more in tune with the public. You have to be responsive to the people that you serve, whereas police chiefs answer to a mayor. Both systems have value but there are unique aspects to both.

As sheriff, I know that the vast majority of my bosses, the citizens of Douglas County, are concerned about crazy drivers. You have a higher likelihood of losing your life to a crazy driver than you do to a criminal. They’re concerned about neighborhood issues, quality of life issues, whether it’s a problematic neighbor or a homeless encampment making an elderly person or single mom very nervous. As sheriff, I really enjoy being responsive to those quality-of-life issues.

What surprised you the most about transitioning from OPD to the sheriff’s office?

I was pleasantly surprised at the high caliber of professionals within the sheriff’s office. Sheriffs really have an opportunity and obligation to be that forward-facing emissary for the profession of law enforcement. It’s easier for sheriffs to share perspectives on public safety issues that may be uncomfortable to discuss.

If I see an opportunity to further a tough conversation about an important topic, I think it’s my obligation to do that, especially if it can help move us closer to real solutions.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Keep it simple.” Our world is very complicated and people are entitled to leaders that can solve problems but to do that you have to take it in bites.

The other sage advice was “Do the right thing for the right reason at the right time.” That was from a retired law enforcement officer with business experience.

Walk us through your thinking about hiring Adam Vail?

The entrance screening officer position is a civilian job. The job description requires former law enforcement or former military police. What would seem like a monotonous job could get very chaotic if we had an active shooter situation or someone trying to sneak a deadly weapon into the courthouse.

When Adam Vail applied, I knew he was qualified. He had not been charged with any crime. He’d been cleared criminally. He had an extensive law enforcement background. I had to do the right thing at the right time for the right reason. He has met and exceeded expectations.

I have been a vocal advocate for the last decade about second chances, skilled trade jobs, breaking cycles of poverty, mentoring people who made a mistake. What good would I be as a man of my word if I didn’t give someone like Adam Vail, who was not criminally charged, a chance? He lost his job because of an administrative decision.

What do you consider your biggest accomplishment so far?

Our team has done an exceptional job at reducing traffic fatalities in unincorporated Douglas County. We’ve made great headway in reducing reckless and criminal driving behavior across the county.

Our special operations group and criminal investigative division have made incredible gains in reducing property crimes. Construction site theft was down over the last two years by 54%. That makes housing cheaper and helps keep small construction companies in business. We are the defenders of skilled trades jobs in Douglas County.

We have bucked the trend of recruitment challenges mostly because we’re not afraid to talk about who we are and what we value.

Ultimately, the sheriff is here to keep you and your family safe. Politics aside, that’s our singular focus and I think our team at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is doing an exceptional job.

WHAT A CHANGING TAX LANDSCAPE MEANS FOR YOUR BUSINESS

EMILY JUNKER TAX PREPARER, THE CAPITAL COLLECTIVE

Signed into law July 4, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act made permanent most business-friendly provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act — eliminating years of uncertainty while creating new planning challenges for Nebraska business owners. The law affects everything from retirement contributions to equipment depreciation, with some changes retroactive to 2025 and others taking effect in 2026.

Rather than allowing provisions to sunset, the Nebraska Society of CPAs’ Brian Klintworth, immediate past chairman and partner at HBE, noted how OBBBA made many of the taxpayer-friendly provisions of the TCJA permanent.

“Congress can still make changes in the future by passing new legislation and that is likely to happen at some point,” he said. “However, that’s not as easy as just letting things expire. So, it should give us more stability in the short-term on what taxes will look like.”

Klintworth referred to modest increases in retirement contribution limits to account for inflation.

“Participants in 401(k) plans who are under 50 years old can contribute $24,500 in 2026, up $1,000 from 2025,” he said. “In addition, those 50 or older can contribute an additional $8,000, up from $7,500 last year. For those between the ages of 60 to 63, that additional amount is $11,250, which is not increased from last year.”

Total contributions to most work retirement plans are up $2,000 from 2025, to $72,000.

BLAKE PETERSON CEPA, WEALTH ADVISOR, CARSON WEALTH

“New for 2025, high-earning employees have to put their additional contributions into Roth, not traditional funds,” he said. “For 2026, high-earning is for those who earn wages of more than $150,000.”

Charitable opportunities

Dan Morris, CPA and partner with Frankel, highlighted how the OBBBA extends the higher standard deduction and suspension of certain itemized deductions, with some modifications.

“If you expect to itemize in 2025, consider accelerating charitable contributions to qualified organizations; mortgage interest payments where appropriate; [and] state and local tax payments, subject to the expanded 2025 SALT cap under OBBBA,” he said. “If you are close to the standard deduction, ‘bunching’ deductions into one year may help you exceed it.”

Morris said charitable deductions remain available within adjusted gross incomebased limits.

“OBBBA adds new rules beginning in 2026, including an AGI ‘floor’ before deductions are allowed and a modest deduction for some non-itemizers,” he said.

As it relates to charitable contributions, Morris also noted how donating appreciated long-term securities can be especially tax-efficient when accelerating gifts.

There are some limitations some businesses have to be aware of, particularly with business losses and interest expense limitations, though most small businesses see benefits out of the new bill.
- BRIAN KLINTWORTH, PARTNER, HBE LLP
Estimates should be revisited whenever there is a meaningful change in revenue, profitability, payroll or business operations.

Business deductions

“The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law on July 4, 2025, impacts many taxpayers including those in agriculture, insurance, banking, construction, production, manufacturing and payroll,” said Emily Junker, tax preparer with The Capital Collective and a member of the Iowa Society of CPAs. “Taxpayers should note the numerous changes aimed at streamlining, enhancing compliance and creating new opportunities.”

Junker noted six impacts of interest to business owners, starting with the bonus depreciation made permanent and increased to 100% for qualified property placed in service after Jan. 19, 2025. This applies specifically to owneroccupied production and manufacturing areas with no office space. She also highlighted how domestic research and development expenditures are treated as expenses in the year incurred.

“Small businesses may retroactively elect a change of accounting method to expense domestic R&D, paid or incurred. before Dec. 31, 2024,” Junker said. “Taxpayers may also elect to either take the remaining unamortized amount as a deduction or ratably over the two taxable years.”

Taxpayers must elect to deduct expenses as a current deduction or over the two-year period by July 4, 2026.

Additional impacts include:

• No deduction for meals and entertainment expenses “provided at the convenience of the employer” (i.e., employer-provided breakroom snacks) incurred after Dec. 31, 2025

• 25% of interest received for loans secured by rural or agricultural real property are excludable from the gross income of a qualified lender

• Taxpayers may elect to pay tax on gains from the sale or exchange of qualified farmland property to qualified farmers over a four-year installment

Tips, energy credit updates

Blake Peterson, wealth adviser with Carson Group, highlighted how new tax rules allow for certain overtime pay and cash tips to receive favorable tax treatment for employees, creating potential tax savings.

“The tip benefit only applies to industries that historically received tips,” he said. “Businesses cannot add tipping solely to qualify for the deduction.”

Peterson added this change could affect businesses by raising payroll and record keeping standards that many current systems may not support.

“Accurate tracking is critical to avoid reporting errors, employee tax issues and potential IRS penalties,” he said.

Klintworth said no major changes to sunsets or phaseouts are providing better certainty in tax law with energy credits the biggest things to be going away. These credits pertain to electric vehicles and energy-efficient home improvements.

“Businesses still have some of these credits available, though they also have no credits for electric vehicles, and solar and wind credits are quickly going away,” he said.

Avoiding Financial Landmines

WHAT A CHANGING TAX LANDSCAPE MEANS FOR YOUR BUSINESS

OBBBA adds new rules beginning in 2026, including an AGI ‘floor’ before deductions are allowed and a modest deduction for some non-itemizers.

Tax payment planning

Understanding safe harbor rules are key to avoiding penalties associated with underpayment of income tax, according to McKenzie Haase, tax manager with Lutz.

“There are two safe harbor options: pay 90% of current-year tax and pay 110% of prior-year tax,” she said. “It is wise to pay 110% of prior year tax since it is hard to

estimate current year tax.”

- DAN MORRIS, PARTNER, FRANKEL

These estimates need to be paid quarterly, she added, noting if a client’s withholding has changed, it will also change their quarterly estimated payment requirements. Haase said timing to make adjustments in estimates matters just as much as the dollar amount.

“Estimates should be revisited whenever there is a meaningful change in revenue, profitability, payroll or business operations,” she said. “For many businesses, this means reassessing after a strong or weak first quarter as well as following major contract wins or losses, staffing or compensation changes or significant capital purchases that affect depreciation.”

If income increases, Haase said taxpayers can stick with the 110% of prior-year tax estimates and pay the remaining balance due by April 15.

“Estimating this increase in tax is important for cash-flow planning,” she said. “If income has decreased, it is important to adjust these estimated tax payments throughout the year so that you are not overpaid.”

Klintworth said many OBBBA changes focus on making the existing law permanent, while the impacts of newer changes are muted.

“Changes to itemized deductions, as well as things like the no tax on tips or overtime, do give both opportunities and challenges to be aware of,” he said. “The timing also matters; some of the changes went into effect for 2025 but many go into effect in 2026.”

Klintworth said understanding those changes can help clients make smart decisions and plan ahead effectively.

“In many ways, the introduction of different phaseouts and exemptions and deductions means more coordination is required for many different scenarios,” he said.

Klintworth summed up OBBBA provisions as good for business owners with the qualified business income deduction as particularly beneficial for many partnership and S corporation owners, allowing for up to 20% of business income to not be subject to income tax.

“There are some limitations some businesses have to be aware of, particularly with business losses and interest expense limitations, though most small businesses see benefits out of the new bill,” he said. “The depreciation changes leave a lot of flexibility for businesses when assets are bought. That is always a positive thing for businesses, particularly those with high capital asset requirements.”

Business owners should consult their CPA about whether to accelerate charitable contributions, equipment purchases and other investments before any new and applicable rules take effect.

Staying Well in 2026

WHAT TO CONSIDER IN CORPORATE WELLNESS THIS YEAR

GREG KEY CEO, LUEDER CONSTRUCTION

The Society of HR Managers has reported that health care costs are expected to rise between 6.5% and 11% in 2026. These costs can snowball for employers as people may elect to forego important medical care. According to a PR Newswire report, 70% of hiring managers say their company has modified benefits specifically to keep current employees or onboard new ones.

With premiums climbing, employers are rethinking how to support their teams. Businesses that invest in preventive care, flexible benefits and holistic wellbeing programs aren’t just minimizing risk, they’re strengthening their brands and gaining a competitive advantage in a tight talent market. That means shifting away from one-size-fits-all health and wellness packages. Employees today are looking for personalized programs that are easier to use and address what’s most important to them.

“We consistently see stronger engagement when offerings are choice-based rather than prescriptive,” said Katie Beach, vice president of people strategy for Nebraska Medicine. “Flexibility, relevance and ease of access matter far more than polished design. Looking ahead, success is about usability and sustained impact, not optics.”

Lori Thomas, director of strategy and operations at The Wellbeing Partners, spoke of the long-term and immediate returns that come from investing in employee health.

“In the short term, we see happier, less-stressed employees who are more engaged and productive. Over time, these investments lead to improved overall

PAULA

health which helps reduce health care costs … While there may be an initial increase in costs as employees address previously undetected health issues, the long-term outcome is a healthier workforce and significant savings for the organization.”

Metrics and feedback matter

Paula Latham of Schemmer and Greg Key, CEO of Lueder Construction, both emphasized how surveying employees helps gather information on what people need or are looking for the most.

Schemmer has staff-led wellness and engagement committees, and while each committee has a slightly different focus, together they work to improve their company team’s health. The firm also plans regular activities that promote staff connection and for a break from daily routines.

Key said employee surveys revealed they wanted lower premiums deducted from pay periods; fair and consistent prescription coverage and pricing; and flexible options for medical, dental and vision coverage.

“We suggest surveying those who are using the coverage after about six months, then again in a year, before the time is up for renewal,” Key said. “Learn what’s working, pros and cons of the service provider, and if the coverage has been adequate and acceptable.”

A study by Express Employment Professionals in 2025 showed that 34% cited “better pay and benefits offered elsewhere” as a reason for anticipated increased turnover. While that metric is important to consider, Thomas also recommended tracking health care costs and claims data; employee engagement

Organizations of any size succeed when they understand their people, reduce barriers, and let their approach evolve with their culture.
- KATIE BEACH, VICE PRESIDENT OF PEOPLE STRATEGY, NEBRASKA MEDICINE

and satisfaction scores; and absenteeism and presenteeism rates.

She said, “Questions we recommend asking include ‘Does this program, initiative or strategy align with organizational goals, mission, vision and values?’ ‘Will it deliver a measurable outcome or is it simply a check-the-box effort?’ ‘Is there a better alternative that would create greater impact or allow us to re-purpose funds for higher value initiatives?’”

Looking ahead

Amy Luckenbill, fractional HR executive for HR Helix and vice president for Human Resource Association of the Midlands, explained that providing health insurance and implementing wellness initiatives are distinct. When it comes to health care, companies are increasingly mindful and strategic in how their offerings are selected.

“Top of mind for employers right now should be utilization and cost containment,” she said. “They want to be sure that the offerings they plan for 2026 will have a significant, positive impact on their workforce, especially given the rising costs of premiums for both employers and employees.

“You can expect to see more employers invest in self-funded plans,

as well as localized care services, where employees are offered free visits if they opt to visit the local provider with whom the employer has a direct contract. Productivity depends on having a healthy workforce.”

Prioritizing health and wellness can be done no matter the size of a business.

“The biggest difference is scale, not intent,” Beach said. “Wellness doesn’t have to be complex to be effective. Organizations of any size succeed when they understand their people, reduce barriers and let their approach evolve with their culture.”

To further demonstrate the idea that healthy individuals play an integral role in fueling company success, a report by the organization World at Work noted 73% of employers plan to maintain wellbeing programs into 2026 and 20% plan to increase them.

“By investing in a culture of trust and support, we’ve seen measurable benefits such as higher productivity, stronger engagement and deeper empathy in the work we do,” Thomas said.

Paying Forward While Giving Back

BC CLARK BUILDS SECOND CAREER HELPING OTHERS ACHIEVE SUCCESS

BC Clark has had several opportunities to retire yet took none of them, even though at any of those junctures she would have done enough in her life to look back on with satisfaction.

In her first chapter, the New Orleans native spent nearly three decades with Conagra Foods, starting in 1977, where she built a distinguished career in information technology for the corporate giant. Hers was a classic American success story, one that more than seals her place in the annals of Omaha business achievers.

Instead of retirement, however, just two years before her time at Conagra came to a close Clark parlayed what she’d learned from various mentors and work experiences to launch Leading Edge Consulting in 2003. From there she added to her business cred among a much wider swath of the business community made up of clients who came to her for advice and expertise on launching and growing their own entrepreneurial ventures.

Even with this fitting legacy around which hung her various laurels, Clark still wasn’t ready to ride into the sunset. In 2008 she founded Metro Omaha Women’s Business Center to accelerate the success of women business owners, professional women and students by helping to create economic

opportunities through entrepreneurship.

In retrospect, these three chapters of her professional life create a perfect circle of self-improvement, economic development and public service, first building oneself under the tutelage of others, then focusing on a venture of her own and finally pouring into other women, helping them achieve selfsufficiency and create wealth.

“I think my greatest achievement is being able to sit down with a business owner and be able to share and transfer skills to them that they actually walk away and use and become successful in,” she said. “I’ve had many of those.”

Clark’s working life began in the most contrary of circumstances. In high school she went to work for her father who owned a gas station and needed someone to help with back-office paperwork, namely keeping the books.

“I hated math, and I told him I didn’t want to do it” she said. “He said, ‘You’ll figure it out.’”

Though she hardly fit the part of ideal candidate for the job, she did in fact figure it out and in the process the experience whetted her appetite for

tackling challenges. And there was no bigger one than what awaited her at Conagra Foods, which like a lot of progressive corporations, saw the future in computing but was still figuring out how to best maximize its potential in day-to-day operations.

“In 1977, I worked in the computer room where we were writing programs for these machines,” she said. “I did that for several years and I think it was maybe in 1998 when they gave me an offer to move to California, which I did. I had basically been a developer, but when I moved to California, I revamped the whole IT section and the computer room, I put in a help desk, you know, multiple things.”

Returning to Omaha in 2002, Clark developed a habit of staying ahead of the technological curve via continuing education, so much so that when new technology presented itself by way of faster and more sophisticated systems, she was often acknowledged as the company expert. For this, she traveled widely to help get field offices and other entities up to speed. Everywhere she went, she spread the corporate gospel of teamwork, improving departments and individual workgroups alike.

“I always tried to serve the team by empowering them to contribute and grow,” she said. “To me, it’s always been about getting people involved. I would always talk about executing relentlessly and ensuring plans turn into real results.”

The decision to start a business came about as a way to build something of her own and as platform upon which she’d reach out to help others.

“I love IT. I can say that I chose it because I fell in love with it,” she told Afro Swag magazine.

“At some point in my career however, it felt old to me and my heart was pulling me towards doing more for women. In 2003, before I retired (from Conagra) in 2005, I knew I needed to do something different.”

That something was Leading Edge Consulting, now The Business Connection, Leading Edge Group, which she followed up five years later by co-founding the nonprofit Metro Omaha Women’s Business Center, of which she is still president. While separate in incorporation and programming, both organizations focus on entrepreneur success through a variety of business forums, workshops, trade shows and classes that educate, inspire and encourage entrepreneurs, business owners and professionals to follow their dreams and get to the next level of success.

“Most people in the community don’t understand how to do the things in business that really cost them,” she said. “Pricing, marketing, networking, which is so key to a small business, all those things business owners have

FUN FACTS:

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF, PROFESSIONALLY SPEAKING? I’M KIND OF A TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADER, YOU KNOW, A SERVANT LEADER. I BELIEVE THAT I INSPIRE VISION AND MOTIVATE OTHERS TOWARD ACCOMPLISHING THINGS TOGETHER, WITH A CONCERTED EFFORT TOWARD A SHARED GOAL.

WHAT’S ONE PILLAR OF YOUR APPROACH TO THE WORK YOU DO? I TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY. I’M THE TYPE OF LEADER THAT OWNS BOTH SUCCESSES AND FAILURES. ANOTHER ONE OF MY VALUES IS COLLABORATION; UNDERSTANDING THAT THE BEST OUTCOMES COME FROM COLLECTIVE EFFORT.

WHAT IS LEADERSHIP TO YOU? I THINK THAT WHEN YOU’RE A VISIONARY EXECUTOR, WHICH I BELIEVE I AM, YOU’RE SOMEONE WHO NOT ONLY SEES WHAT’S POSSIBLE BUT MAKES IT HAPPEN WITH AND THROUGH OTHERS.

WHAT IS THE VALUE TO AGE AND EXPERIENCE IN LIFE? I DON’T THINK THAT THE OLDER WE GET THAT WE SHOULD ACQUIESCE OR STEP TO THE SIDE. WE SHOULD CONTINUE TO LEARN AND GROW. THAT’S MY PHILOSOPHY. BELIEVING IN YOURSELF AND CONTINUING TO HAVE A VOICE, I THINK THAT’S SOMETHING PEOPLE SOMETIMES DON’T EXPECT WHEN YOU GET A CERTAIN AGE, BUT HEY, IT’S A NEW REVOLUTION HAPPENING.

to know, and they can come to our classes and we give them in-depth information.”

Clark’s age is privileged information — not out of vanity but because of how people still judge others based on such things — but suffice to say she’s at a point where she could step into that long-delayed retirement whenever she wanted and no one would question why. Instead, the mission of moving people into business ownership and financial independence continues to drive her in service to others.

“We try to stay ahead of the curve, stay on the cutting edge of things so that we can bring good information to people,” she said. “When they leave my class, they can walk away with a shell of a business plan and come back and we help them fill that in after they do their research. I believe in being very detailed in this stuff. I don’t like to leave people hanging or have them wanting for more.”

2026: The Year of the IPO

Initial public offerings are one of the great features of capital markets. Typically, the life cycle of a company starts by funding an idea with personal money or from friends and family. As it grows and its capital needs expand, a firm will often turn to venture capital or other private investors. The next step for many is to then sell a portion of the business to the investing public by listing shares on a stock exchange. This carries a number of advantages for the company but it also enables the rest of us to own a small fraction of the business and participate in its future. Being able to invest in some of the best companies in the world is capitalism at its finest, in our opinion.

Usually when there are strong equity markets IPOs follow as firms want to maximize the price they receive with positive trading conditions thereafter. That hasn’t been the case recently; we’ve seen few IPOs since this bull market began three years ago. Frankly, it’s especially surprising considering we are undergoing a major technology shift in AI that is spawning new startups that require tremendous funding, which is yet another argument for why we’re not in a bubble. We believe that the Fed’s swift rise in interest rates in 2022 played a major role in delaying this IPO cycle. However, now that the Fed has been lowering its rate there are signs that 2026 could be a major year for U.S. IPOs.

typically means that there’s a meaningful rise in share price as soon as trading begins. This is great for insiders such as founders, private investors and employees that are looking to sell some of their shares. Historically, that’s not been a great entry point for long-term investors.

Beware of catching IPO fever.

Some of the largest and most exciting private companies are expected to go public this year. Such names that have been speculated upon include SpaceX, OpenAI, Anthropic and Databricks, among others. According to Bloomberg, SpaceX is set to break IPO records by potentially raising more than $30 billion at a targeted valuation of $1.5 trillion. OpenAI could be another exciting listing but it’s not expected to occur until later this year or possibly 2027.

We look forward to having our capital markets normalize once again as it speaks to the health of the U.S. economy, our markets and our future. However, should these big names IPO this year, we advise clients to remain patient. A “successful” listing

LEXI RODRIGUEZ

Bio:

A 2024 graduate of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with a degree in advertising and public relations, Lexi Rodriguez is a professional volleyball libero for LOVB Nebraska. One of the most accomplished defensive players in UNL history, the Sterling, Illinois, native is a four-time All America honoree. She co-founded SheSports, a free digital platform designed to connect girls ages 8 to 18 with female collegiate athletes in a safe, moderated environment. The platform focuses on confidence, mental health and honest conversation, while also creating purpose-driven NIL opportunities for women athletes. It recently announced a partnership with Nebraskabased Hurrdat as its sports media partner.

What led you to launch this platform?

The idea came from my own experience growing up in sports. I have been playing volleyball for a long time, and at every level there was pressure to perform and compare myself to others. Even when things looked successful on the outside, confidence did not always come easily. I wanted to create a place where girls could talk honestly about those experiences and hear from athletes who understand what they are going through.

SheSports gives girls ages 8 to 18 a free, safe, moderated space to ask questions, share concerns, and build confidence. There are many platforms focused on performance and highlights. There are very few designed for honest conversation and encouragement. SheSports fills that gap by focusing on connection and belonging.

What inspired you to become an entrepreneur in the first place?

I did not start out wanting to be an entrepreneur. I wanted to help solve a problem I kept seeing. As a student athlete and now a professional player, I realized how many young girls needed support and connection, not just motivation. Building SheSports felt like a way to use my experiences and my platform with purpose.

How has your life as an elite athlete played a role in this venture?

My life as an athlete shapes everything about this platform. I have competed in state championships, national championships and world championships at different levels. Those experiences taught me that success is about more than results. The relationships

I built with teammates and the people around me are what kept me going. SheSports is rooted in that same idea of showing up for each other.

What would you most like people to know about this new offering?

SheSports is not about perfection or highlight reels. It is about real stories and real conversations. This platform exists to help girls feel seen, supported and understood by athletes who have been in their shoes. Our current featured sports are volleyball, basketball, soccer, swimming and bowling with more sports coming soon.

Another special feature about the app: we have the support of some of the nation’s top mental health and sports psychologists.
