Matta Architecture redefines modern luxury design on Florida’s West Coast

In college, Osiris Matta’s avant-garde architectural designs were either highly appreciated by his professors or vehemently rejected. “There was never anything in between,” says his father, Hani. “I only had one piece of advice: keep going.” Today, the extreme creativity many of his professors couldn’t appreciate has become the driving force behind some of Florida’s most striking modern residences, transforming the coastal architectural landscape, one revolutionary design at a time.

At Matta Architecture, the Tierra Verde-based firm that has been shaping Florida’s luxury residential scene since 1983, the unusual pairing of visionary design and practical execution has created something rare in the world of high-end custom homes. This is a practice where the architects don’t just draw the plans and walk away. They build what they design, staying with each project from the first sketch to the final touch, ensuring that every daring curve and sweeping line makes it from imagination to reality.

The firm’s story is one of evolution and perfect timing. After graduating from Cairo University, Hani Matta, known simply as “Matta” to clients and colleagues, launched the business in 1985, beginning with approximately fifty houses in Tierra Verde throughout the 1980s and 90s before expanding to Treasure Island, Redington, and beyond. Over the decades, Matta Architecture has completed more than 200 houses and more than 500 units of condos and hotels.

But it was the addition of Osiris to the firm in 2009, fresh from college, that would fundamentally alter the practice’s trajectory. Initially, the young designer worked on the practical side of the business, learning to balance his creative ambitions with the complex realities of budgets and construction limitations. Then, in 2011, something shifted in coastal Florida. The old-world Mediterranean

aesthetic that had dominated for decades began giving way to a hunger for clean lines, dramatic forms, and modern sensibilities.

“It was a perfect time for him,” Matta recalls. From that moment forward, Osiris became the firm’s modern architect, designing all their contemporary projects. In the years since, he’s completed forty homes, each with advanced architecture that pushes boundaries and challenges conventions about what residential design can achieve.

What makes Osiris’s approach distinctive is his fundamental philosophy about architectural plans. For him, a design must possess movement, a quality that transcends static geometry and breathes life into spaces before they’re even built. “When I feel like I have a plan with movement, I know the 3D will look good,” he explains. “I keep working on the plan until it doesn’t feel static. I like to envision the gears of a clock: one gear turns one way, the other turns the opposite way. The floors of a home are like those gears, always moving and working with each other.”

Over time, this philosophy has evolved into what Osiris calls Ultimate Curvism, a design approach that has become his signature. For the firm, Ultimate Curvism is more than a house design; it’s a philosophy of living. Where modernism often relies on rigid geometry and sharp angles, Osiris’s Ultimate Curvism embraces the organic, the continuous, the endlessly flowing. His designs pulse with energy, spaces that flow into one another with purposeful rhythm, creating homes that feel alive. The partnership between father and son has become something

remarkable. Today, Osiris creates the designs while Matta makes the architectural adjustments necessary to prepare them for engineering. “He gives me a lot of challenges every day,” Matta jokes, but there’s genuine admiration in his voice. “It’s an unbelievable partnership that very few people will have. To have such a creative designer, we always end with something good.”

Perhaps no project better exemplifies the heights this partnership can reach, or the principles of Ultimate Curvism in action, than the Nemethy House. This dramatic waterfront residence stands as a testament to what happens when a client grants total creative freedom. The home features 6,800 square feet of air-conditioned space, 2,300 square feet of decks, four bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, an office, and a theater room, all elevated over a four-car garage on the ground floor.

“The client said Do what you would do if you were building your own home,” Osiris recalls. “We’d never heard that before.” The request was unusual in an industry where client input typically shapes every decision, where designers constantly check in for approval and adjust course based on feedback. But this client operated differently. When Osiris asked for input, the response was always the same: “Did Osiris like it?” If so, proceed. The house became, in essence, Osiris’s personal vision made manifest, a pure expression of Ultimate Curvism uncompromised by convention or constraint. The client loved the result.

What’s more, the client insisted the construction match the design exactly, refusing to compromise on a single detail. This level of commitment is rare in residential construction, where budget concerns and practical limitations often force modifications. But not here. The house would be built precisely as designed, challenges and all.

And there were challenges. The ceiling design alone pushed the boundaries of conventional construction and became a masterwork. Matta had initially designed ceiling plans, but when the client saw them, he asked for something unique. “I told him to talk to Osiris,” Matta says. What Osiris created was extraordinary: three layers of overlapping curves, a design so beautiful that Matta keeps the drawings hanging in his office.

The entire structure presented technical hurdles. All the floors, decks, and roofs are poured concrete, a challenging material to work with at this scale. Yet when completed, Matta measured the foundation and found it matched the plans with 100% accuracy. The windows posed another obstacle. The client wanted a very specific blue-tinted glass that had to be imported in sheets, fabricated in the United States, and cut to tolerances of no more than a thirty-second of an inch. Those, too, were installed perfectly.

Partly due to the pandemic and partly due to the unique design and materials, the Nemethy House took more than four years to build. But the result justified every moment spent wrestling with curves and concrete, creating a home that stands as a landmark of what’s possible when vision meets unwavering commitment.

Osiris’s path to architecture wasn’t direct. Growing up, his father would take him to job sites, and while he always enjoyed those visits and had a natural inclination to draw, he initially pursued engineering in college. “But - I struggled with it; it was boring,” he admits. After pausing to reconsider his direction, he spent time looking through architecture books, and suddenly everything clicked. He was creative by nature, and the family already had an established business. Architecture offered the opportunity to be paid for creativity, to work with his hands, to see ideas take physical form. He returned to school and excelled.

What truly distinguishes Matta Architecture in the luxury market is its dual role as both architect and builder. This integration solves one of the most persistent problems in high-end residential construction: cost surprises. “When we design, I can tell the cost of construction very early,” Matta explains. “There are no surprises. I know the price of everything from the drawings, and I can give you the number while we’re starting on the design.” Moreover, when architect and builder are one entity, changes can happen fluidly on site, with immediate sign-off, accelerating the process and ensuring design integrity.

The firm’s client base comes entirely through word of mouth, a testament to the quality of their work and their reputation. “Here, everybody knows everybody,” Matta says. “Because we’ve done so many projects, our name is everywhere. Our customers are our family.”

Their guiding philosophy, as Matta articulates it, is simple but profound: “Form and function are a married couple, they have equal rights.” It’s a principle that honors both Osiris’s soaring creativity and Matta’s practical wisdom, ensuring that beauty never comes at the expense of livability, and functionality never diminishes aesthetic ambition.

As Florida’s architectural landscape continues to evolve, with modern design claiming an ever-larger share of the luxury market, Osiris Matta stands at the forefront, turning those metaphorical gears, creating movement in space, transforming the way we think about residential architecture. His curves aren’t mere decoration but fundamental expressions of how humans experience space, how we move through rooms, how our eyes follow lines, and how our bodies respond to flow. Two water slides crisscross through the trees, dropping 30 feet from the upper pool into the lazy river below.
