What it takes to deliver the HGTV Dream Home 2026

When Michael Knotts was selected to build the HGTV Dream Home 2026, it wasn’t simply a matter of opportunity; it was a validation of Knotts Builders’ experience navigating complex land, logistics, and high-stakes execution.
As a family business with more than three decades of land development expertise, Knotts had just acquired a spectacular lot on the Charlotte side of Lake Wylie. This exceptional piece of land would become the setting for a remarkable home featuring incredible views, and plenty of innovative surprises.
Knotts understood that the HGTV network was looking for more than just skilled construction. They needed a builder who could meet aggressive deadlines while managing complex logistics, and he was confident his team would deliver. “I absolutely knew we could do it. I know our quality, build times, and our team. Timing was very important for HGTV, and I knew we could meet the deadline,” he says. “With a national audience, multiple sponsors, and an unforgiving production schedule, the margin for error was effectively zero.”
The home itself presented fascinating challenges that the builder’s team relished. Among the standout features are 20 skylights and four sun tunnels, all part of a completely automated system that adjusts

based on temperature and humidity preferences. One of Knotts’ personal favorite elements is the second-story floating deck that wraps around a cantilevered porch, a feature that required careful engineering but maximized the property’s natural advantages. The team also built a remarkable two-story dock complete with a circular staircase. These features weren’t designed for novelty, but to maximize livability, light, and connection to the lake.
What set this build apart from Knotts Builders’ typical custom projects was the sheer number of stakeholders involved. “Our typical clients are usually a couple; often they have a realtor and sometimes even a designer, which we welcome,” Knotts says. “For this project, there were multiple parties with multiple interests. With that much complexity,
communication becomes critical, and you have to make decisions much further in advance because so many people have to agree. But everyone knew their role, and everyone knew who did what.”
Knotts says his team approached the project with enthusiasm, even knowing their work would face more scrutiny than usual. Adding to the pressure was the requirement to maintain an impeccably tidy job site daily for time-lapse video footage. “Every job site should look like that anyway,” he says. “Our contractors and trade partners really stepped up, though. It was a really good experience, and I’m so proud of how it turned out.”

What truly distinguishes Knotts Builders in the industry is its deep expertise in land and site issues. “How a home interacts with the land goes far beyond where the foundation meets the dirt,” Knotts says. Zoning, restrictions, topography, drainage, views, orientation, and accessibility all factor into creating a home where people don’t just live in the structure but also around it. A great deal of his expertise comes from Knotts’ upbringing in a family of land developers. “Some builders will just buy land and put their product on it, but I learned early on you can really add value when you consider everything about the land, then ask what’s the best way to live on this.”
For prospective homeowners, Knotts offers practical wisdom gained through years of experience. “Once you sign a contract, expect the unexpected. Construction is messy. Issues will arise; problems will need to be solved. You should be able to trust your builder to guide you; let them do the worrying. Problem-solving is central to what we do. Our role is to absorb complexity, so our clients don’t have to,” he says.
Perhaps most importantly, Knotts stresses the importance of choosing a builder based on character and core values. When you’re looking for a builder, try to understand what their character is. What are their core values? Someone’s character doesn’t change over time or circumstances. You want a builder who will do the right thing, whether the solution costs $15 or $15,000. That’s someone you can trust.
