The Rencontres d’Arles stands with the Ukrainian people as they fight for their freedom. All week, the festival pays tribute to the artists and photographers whose lives are threatened by Russia’s aggression.

Le temps d’une soirée, les quais du Rhône revêtent leurs plus beaux atours pour nous transporter jusqu’aux rives du Gange. The 53rd Rencontres d’Arles opens with a big party featuring music and images from the Indian subcontinent and nearby countries. The quays of the Rhône go all out to whisk us off to the banks of the Ganges.

À l’Atlantic Bar à Arles, Nathalie, la patronne, est le centre de l’attention. Ici, on chante, on danse, on se tient les uns aux autres. Après l’annonce de la mise en vente du bar, Nathalie et les habitués se confrontent à la fin de leur monde et d’un lieu à la fois destructeur et vital.

At the Atlantic Bar in Arles, Nathalie, the owner, is the centre of attention. Here, people sing, dance and hold on to each other. After the announcement that the bar is up for sale, Nathalie and the regulars face the end of their world and of a place that is both destructive and vital.

Disparu le 3 mars dernier, le scénographe des Rencontres d’Arles a réinventé, durant vingt-deux ans, la mise en scène de la photographie, avec des installations atypiques et originales. Amoureux d’Arles, il a su mettre la ville en valeur en investissant des lieux souvent oubliés ou peu propices à l’exposition. For twenty-two years, Rencontres d’Arles scenographer Olivier Etcheverry, who died on March 3, reinvented photography exhibition design with atypical, offbeat installations. He loved Arles and showed the city off to its best advantage, working in places that are often forgotten or considered unsuitable for exhibitions.

Kering et les Rencontres d’Arles décernent à Babette Mangolte la quatrième édition du Prix Women In Motion pour la photographie. Installée à New York dans les années 1970, cette cinéaste et photographe expérimentale y a documenté la scène chorégraphique, participant activement à la définition et à la construction d’archives de la performance.

Kering and the Rencontres d’Arles are bestowing the fourth Women In Motion Award for photography on Babette Mangolte. In the 1970s, the experimental filmmaker and photographer lived in New York, where she documented the dance scene. She has actively participated in defining and building a performance archive.

Tatiana et Evgeniy Pavlov nous racontent l’invention d’un langage visuel et leur engagement pour l’identité ukrainienne.

The Kharkiv Photography School is a Ukrainian art movement that emerged in the 1970s, in opposition to Soviet socialist realism. Tatiana and Evgeniy Pavlov talk about the invention of a visual language and their commitment to Ukrainian identity.

ll existe une nuit spéciale en Polynésie où les esprits sortent et vagabondent. Des esprits qui n’ont toujours pas pu rejoindre l’autre rive, pour différentes raisons... comme un but non achevé, un tourment d’amour, ou simplement l’envie de rester parmi les vivants.

Ennio, Julia, Marvin, Robin et Tsi Min façonnent une musique « climatique », qui combine instruments percussifs traditionnels, ori deck, style porté par la jeune scène underground tahitienne, et orero ancestral. Ils creusent le puits volcanique d’où émerge la puissance fertile du dialogue entre images, musiques et narrations.

There is a special night in Polynesia when spirits come out and roam around. They haven’t been able to reach the other side for various reasons, such as an unachieved goal, a broken heart or simply the desire to remain among the living.

A tempestuous concert by QuinzeQuinze at the Théâtre Antique offers a unique musical experience based on the program of the 53rd Rencontres d’Arles. Ennio, Julia, Marvin, Robin, and Tsi Min perform “climate” music combining traditional percussion instruments, ori deck—a style created by young underground Tahitian musicians—and ancestral orero. They dig a volcanic well from which the fertile power of the dialogue between images, music and stories erupts.

Teresa Griffiths brosse le portrait d’une femme anticonformiste, indifférente au carcan du machisme, mais également minée par un passé d’abus sexuel et un syndrome post-traumatique qui la précipitera, après la guerre, dans l’alcool et la dépression. On reste coi face

aux carrières et aux personnalités multiples de l’artiste, tout autant que muet d’admiration devant la puissance de ses clichés, auxquels le documentaire fait la part belle.

Teresa Griffiths paints the portrait of a non-conformist woman, indifferent to the shackles of machismo, but also undermined by a history of sexual abuse and a post-traumatic syndrome which, after the war, led her to alcohol and depression. We are left in awe when confronted with the artist’s multiple careers and personalities, as well as speechless with admiration for the power of her photographs, which are given pride of place in the documentary.

Avant-garde filmmaker Barbara Hammer offers a rereading, from the island of Jersey, of the love affair and creative adventure of the extraordinary artist couple Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore. Composed as a collage of photographs, documents and interviews interspersed with fictional scenes, the film retraces the life and work of two women whose work and destiny have been unjustly forgotten.

Avec sa série Blackwater, Sally Mann est la nouvelle lauréate du Prix Pictet, dont la thématique de la 9e édition est le feu. Elle a parcouru le Grand Marais Lugubre aux États-Unis, où pullulent, dans une végétation dense, serpents, insectes et prédateurs, et où de nombreux esclaves en fuite ont cherché un chemin vers la liberté. Elle y a photographié un paysage consumé par les flammes, qui semble faire écho à l’embrasement des tensions raciales. Le temps de ce « seule en scène », Sally Mann revient plus largement sur sa pratique de la photographie de paysage.

Sally Mann is the winner of the ninth Prix Pictet, whose theme this year is fire, for her Blackwater series. She traveled around the Great Dismal Swamp in the United States, a place teeming with dense vegetation, snakes, insects, and predators. Many runaway slaves sought refuge there on the road to freedom. She photographed a landscape consumed by flames, which seems to echo the resurgence of racial tensions. More broadly, Blackwater allowed the artist to explore her practice of landscape photography.

Pour célébrer les quarante ans de l’École nationale supérieure de la photographie (ENSP), les Rencontres d’Arles proposent un spectacle photographique inédit, où transparaît toute la diversité des profils issus de l’école, à travers la performance d’une dizaine de jeunes diplômé·e·s.

Dans ce cadre, un volet est consacré à la scène photographique contemporaine ukrainienne, en présence de jeunes artistes qui témoignent de leurs engagements et de leurs défis face à l’offensive russe.

To celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie (ENSP), the Rencontres d’Arles offers an unprecedented photography show reflecting the diversity of students from the school with a performance by around ten young graduates. In this frame, a part of the show focuses on Ukraine’s contemporary photography scene with young artists talking about their commitments and challenges since Russia invaded their country.

Diem Ha Le, 92 min, 2021. Di a douze ans, elle est issue de la minorité ethnique des Hmong dans laquelle les filles se marient très jeunes, après le controversé « kidnapping de la mariée ». Di is a 12-year-old girl and belongs to the Hmong, an ethnic minority in which girls get married at a very young age, after a controversial “bride-kidnapping”.

À 93 ans, James Barnor continue d’inspirer des générations d’artistes et de passionner son public. Derrière chacune de ses photographies se raconte une histoire, ancrée dans un parcours géographique et historique qui nous mène du Ghana au Royaume-Uni, durant quarante ans de photographies. C’est ce qu’il partage, à travers une sélection d’images, pendant cette soirée au théâtre Antique.

At 93, James Barnor continues to inspire generations of artists and enthrall his audience. Behind each of his photographs lies a story rooted in a 40-year geographical and historical journey from Ghana to the United Kingdom. He shares a selection of them during an evening at the Théâtre Antique.

The Rencontres d’Arles brings together the Louis Roederer Discovery Award with galleries, art centers, associations, independent venues, and institutions. This year’s guest curator is Taous Dahmani. Her selection is not focused on a particular theme or sole genre, but on the photographers’ attitudes toward image creation, taking a “pre-photographic” viewpoint on what drives or gives rise to a project. Here, all the artists start out from the intimate.

L’événement festif incontournable de la semaine d’ouverture est de retour après deux longues années d’absence, sur le site de la friche industrielle des papeteries Étienne, exceptionnellement ouvert. Une promenade visuelle à travers plus de quarante propositions photographiques, projetées en boucle sur grands écrans (dont un dédié à l’Ukraine) ou sous forme d’installations. Coups de cœur, cartes blanches à des institutions, cette grande fête de la photographie propose également des performances, concerts, dj sets, food trucks et bars.

Opening week’s unmissable festive event is back after a two-year hiatus. Visitors can take a visual promenade on the abandoned industrial site of the Papeteries Étienne, opened especially, to see over forty photographic proposals projected in a loop on large screens (including one dedicated to Ukraine) or in the form of installations. This big photography party offers favorites, cartes blanches to institutions, performances, concerts, DJ sets, food trucks, and bars.

Sur l’invitation des Rencontres d’Arles, France PhotoBook organise Arles Books Fair 2022, au cœur du festival. Dédié à la richesse et à la variété des pratiques éditoriales, cet événement sera rythmé par un programme de rencontres avec les photographes et les auteur·rice·s. Arles Books Fair rassemble une cinquantaine d’éditeur·rice·s issu·e·s de plus de quinze pays.

At the invitation of the Rencontres d’Arles, France PhotoBook holds the 2022 Arles Books Fair in the heart of the festival. Devoted to the richness and variety of publishing practices, the event includes meetings with photographers and authors.

Arles Books Fair brings together over 50 publishers from more than 15 countries.

Enregistré en préfecture comme organisme dispensateur de formation, le festival a obtenu le label Qualité QUALIOPI en mars 2022. Programme en billetterie et sur rencontres-arles.com, stages sur inscription. Other workshops are offered all summer-long and can be financed through on-going professional training programs (AFDAS, FAFCEA, FIFPL…). Registered at the prefecture as a training organization, the festival obtained the QUALIOPI quality label in March 2022. NOÉMIE GOUDAL & MAËLLE POÉSY ANIMA

En écho à l’exposition Phoenix, présentée à l’église des Trinitaires à Arles, Noémie Goudal et Maëlle Poésy imaginent une installation-performance. Par le biais d’un dispositif vidéo et musical, et d’une artiste suspensive qui exposent le public à une sensation physique du temps, ANIMA raconte les métamorphoses invisibles des paysages et des lieux avec lesquels nous cohabitons.

Noémie Goudal and Maëlle Poésy imagine an installation-performance echoing the Phoenix exhibition at the Église des Trinitaires in Arles. With video, music and an aerial artist, who gives the audience a physical sensation of time, ANIMA recounts the invisible metamorphoses of the landscapes and places we live with.
