Cuando pienso en Bella Italia, lo primero que llega a mi corazón es mi familia, mis raíces y los sueños que se construyen con amor y sacrificio. Pienso en mi esposa Deborah, mi compañera de vida, y en nuestros hijos, presentes en cada etapa de este camino. También pienso en mis nietos, que durante sus visitas se unen a mí en el restaurante, cocinan a mi lado y comparten momentos que atesoro profundamente. Verlos aquí, disfrutando
y aprendiendo nuestras tradiciones, me recuerda por qué todo esto vale la pena.
Este mes de febrero, mientras celebramos el Día de San Valentín, quiero compartir un poco de nuestra historia. Porque Bella Italia nació del amor: amor por la familia, por la cultura italiana y por esta comunidad que nos ha acompañado durante tantos años.
EL COMIENZO DE UN SUEÑO
Nací en Massachusetts, pero mis raíces vienen de Nápoles, Italia. Crecí entre aromas, conversaciones familiares y la costumbre de reunirnos alrededor de la mesa. En Massachusetts tuve un restaurante con mis hermanos; cocinar y servir siempre ha sido parte de mi vida.
Lo que realmente me movió fue mi amor por la cultura italiana y por la comida que expresa cariño, unión y tradición. Cuando Deborah y yo vimos la oportunidad de comenzar algo propio aquí, supimos que era el paso correcto. Ya éramos adultos, con una familia formada, y queríamos construir un proyecto que reflejara nuestras raíces y que pudiéramos dejar como legado.
DE BOSTON A HILTON HEAD: UN FLECHAZO INESPERADO
Nuestra historia con Hilton Head comenzó casi por casualidad. Mi padre y yo compramos un pequeño condominio aquí y veníamos a jugar golf y descansar. Con el tiempo, empezamos a visitar más seguido.
Me enamoré de las playas, de la tranquilidad, de los campos de golf y del ambiente familiar. Un día, simplemente lo supe: este era el lugar donde quería vivir, trabajar y envejecer. Vendí mi restaurante en Massachusetts y comenzamos una nueva vida con Bella Italia. Deborah estuvo a mi lado en cada paso, con la misma fe y el mismo corazón que ha puesto en todo lo que hemos construido juntos.
Hoy, cuando mis nietos vienen a pasar sus vacaciones con nosotros, se integran al restaurante con entusiasmo. Cocinan conmigo, preguntan por las recetas
familiares y disfrutan de este espacio que también sienten suyo. Verlos conectar con nuestras tradiciones me confirma que todo este esfuerzo tiene un propósito especial.
TRADICIONES QUE SIGUEN VIVAS
Mi familia viene de Nápoles, donde la comida es un abrazo, una celebración, una forma de decir “te quiero”. Esa esencia vive en cada plato que servimos en Bella Italia.
Aquí seguimos preparando lo mismo que yo comía de niño:
• la salsa del domingo
• las albóndigas hechas a mano
• las milanesas de pollo
• la berenjena a la parmesana
• y la pizza con la receta napolitana que ha pasado de generación en generación
Cada plato tiene historia. Tiene alma. Tiene familia. Es mi manera de honrar a mis padres, a mis abuelos y a mis raíces… y también de enseñarle a mis nietos de dónde venimos.
EL PLATO QUE REPRESENTA EL AMOR
Si tuviera que elegir un plato que simbolice el amor, la tradición y la familia, especialmente en San Valentín, serían nuestras cenas italianas de domingo: pasta fresca, salsa casera, albóndigas, pan caliente… Ese es el sabor de mi infancia, de mis raíces, de lo que significa estar juntos.
Y claro, la pizza napolitana siempre tendrá un lugar especial en mi corazón. Es parte de nuestra herencia y una de las primeras recetas que enseñé a mis hijos.
MOMENTOS QUE MARCAN EL ALMA
Después de 35 años, he visto de todo:
• parejas que celebraron su primer aniversario y hoy vienen con sus hijos
• clientes que llegaron hace décadas y ahora traen a sus nietos
• familias que han hecho de Bella Italia su tradición
Lo más bonito es que muchos ya no son clientes… son amigos. He visto generaciones crecer frente a mis ojos, igual que mis propios nietos vienen a compartir tiempo conmigo en este lugar que tanto amo.
Hemos alimentado a esta comunidad por tanto tiempo que siento que crecimos juntos. Y cada día me siento agradecido, honrado y sorprendido de que la gente siga eligiéndonos. Ese es el verdadero regalo.
LA COMUNIDAD HISPANA: UN HOGAR DENTRO DE NUESTRO HOGAR
Algo que me llena de orgullo es la relación tan cercana que tenemos con la comunidad hispana. La mayoría de nuestro equipo es hispano, y muchos de sus hijos han crecido dentro del restaurante. Para mí, ellos no son empleados: son familia.
Vengo de una familia de inmigrantes. Sé lo que significa llegar a un país nuevo, trabajar duro, buscar oportunidades. Por eso admiro profundamente a la comunidad latina: su esfuerzo, su dedicación, su amor por la familia.
Me encanta que nuestros clientes hispanos se sientan cómodos aquí, que puedan hablar su idioma, que nuestras
meseras los atiendan con cariño en español. Bella Italia es su casa tanto como la mía. Y siempre lo será.
UN MENSAJE PARA ESTE SAN VALENTÍN
En este Día de San Valentín, quiero que cada pareja, cada familia y cada grupo de amigos que entre por nuestras puertas sienta lo mismo que yo sentía en la mesa de mi mamá: amor, cuidado y un plato preparado con el corazón.
La comida es nuestro lenguaje del amor. Es la manera en que les decimos: gracias por estar aquí, gracias por ser parte de nuestra historia.

When I think of Bella Italia, the first things that come to my heart are my family, my roots, and the dreams built with love and sacrifice. I think of my wife Deborah, my partner in life, and our children, present in every stage of this journey. I also think of my grandchildren, who during their visits join me in the restaurant, cook by my side, and share moments I treasure deeply. Seeing them here, enjoying and learning our traditions, reminds me why all of this is worth it.
This February, as we celebrate Valentine’s Day, I want to share a bit of our story. Because Bella Italia was born from love: love for family, for Italian culture, and for this community that has supported us for so many years.
THE BEGINNING OF A DREAM
I was born in Massachusetts, but my roots come from Naples, Italy. I grew up surrounded by aromas, family

conversations, and the tradition of gathering around the table. In Massachusetts, I owned a restaurant with my brothers; cooking and serving others has always been part of my life.
What truly moved me was my love for Italian culture and for food that expresses affection, unity, and tradition. When Deborah and I saw the opportunity to start something of our own here, we knew it was the right step. We were already adults, with a family of our own, and we wanted to build a project that reflected our roots and could become a legacy.
FROM BOSTON TO HILTON HEAD: AN UNEXPECTED LOVE STORY
Our connection with Hilton Head began almost by chance. My father and I bought a small condo here, and we would come to play golf and relax. Over time, we started visiting more often.
I fell in love with the beaches, the tranquility, the golf courses, and the family friendly atmosphere. One day, I simply knew: this was the place where I wanted to live, work, and grow old. I sold my restaurant in Massachusetts, and we began a new life with Bella Italia. Deborah stood by my side every step of the way, with the same faith and heart she has put into everything we’ve built together.
Today, when my grandchildren come to spend their vacations with us, they join the restaurant with enthusiasm. They cook with me, ask about our family recipes, and enjoy this space they now feel is theirs too. Watching them connect with our traditions confirms that all this effort has a special purpose.
TRADITIONS THAT STAY ALIVE
My family comes from Naples, where food is a hug, a celebration, a way of saying “I love you.” That essence lives in every dish we serve at Bella Italia.
Here we continue preparing the same things I ate as a child:
• Sunday sauce
• handmade meatballs
• chicken milanese
• eggplant parmesan
• Pizza made with the Neapolitan recipe passed down through generations
Every dish has history. It has soul. It has family. It is my way of honoring my parents, my grandparents, and my roots… and also of teaching my grandchildren where we come from.
THE DISH THAT REPRESENTS LOVE
If I had to choose one dish that symbolizes love, tradition, and family, especially on Valentine’s Day, it would be our Italian Sunday dinners: fresh pasta, homemade sauce, meatballs, warm bread…
That is the flavor of my childhood, my roots, and what it means to be together.
And of course, Neapolitan pizza will always have a special place in my heart. It is part of our heritage and one of the first recipes I taught my children.
MOMENTS THAT TOUCH THE SOUL
After 35 years, I’ve seen it all: • couples who celebrated their first anniversary and now come with their children
• customers who arrived decades ago and now bring their grandchildren • families who have made Bella Italia part of their tradition
The most beautiful thing is that many are no longer customers… they are friends. I’ve watched generations grow before my eyes, just as my own grandchildren come to share time with me in this place I love so much.
We have nourished this community for so long that I feel we’ve grown together. And every day, I feel grateful, honored, and amazed that people continue choosing us. That is the true gift.
THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY: A HOME WITHIN OUR HOME
Something that fills me with pride is the close relationship we have with the
Hispanic community. Most of our team is Hispanic, and many of their children have grown up inside the restaurant. To me, they are not employees, they are family. I come from an immigrant family. I know what it means to arrive in a new country, work hard, and seek opportunities. That’s why I deeply admire the Latino community: their effort, their dedication, their love for family.
I love that our Hispanic customers feel comfortable here, that they can speak their language, and that our servers welcome them warmly in Spanish. Bella Italia is their home as much as it is mine. And it always will be.
A MESSAGE FOR THIS VALENTINE’S DAY
On this Valentine’s Day, I want every couple, every family, and every group of friends who walks through our doors to feel what I felt at my mother’s table: love, care, and a dish prepared from the heart.
Food is our language of love. It is how we say: thank you for being here, thank you for being part of our story.
We look forward to celebrating together, as one big family.

EL SABOR DE AMOR SAN VALENTÍN AL ESTILO AMERICANO

San Valentín es la máxima expresión del afecto. Aunque las cenas en restaurantes son tradicionales, la tendencia actual celebra la intimidad del hogar. Como instructor de cocina, siempre digo que no hay gesto más genuino que dedicar tiempo a crear algo delicioso con nuestras propias manos.
Para esta celebración, busquemos el equilibrio: una técnica sencilla pero un resultado de alta cocina. Aquí les comparto una receta que nunca falla.
FILET MIGNON EN MANTEQUILLA DE AJO Y HIERBAS
Ingredientes: (2 personas)
• 2 medallones de Filet Mignon (200g c/u).
• 3 cdas. de mantequilla sin sal.
• 2 dientes de ajo machacados y una rama de romero fresco.
• 1 manojo de espárragos trigueros.
• Sal de mar y pimienta negra recién molida.
Preparación:
1.) Sellar: Salpimienta la carne generosamente. En una sartén muy caliente con un toque de aceite, sella los medallones 4 minutos por lado para un término medio.
2.) Aromatizar: Baja el fuego y añade la mantequilla, el ajo y el romero. Con una cuchara, baña constantemente la carne con la mantequilla derretida ( técnica de arroser ) por 2 minutos.
3.) Guarnición: Retira la carne para que repose. En la misma sartén, saltea los espárragos hasta que estén tiernos y crujientes.
Sirvan con una copa de Cabernet Sauvignon y celebren el placer de cocinar con el corazón.

VALENTINE'S DAY AMERICAN STYLE

Valentine’s Day is the ultimate expression of affection. While dining out is traditional, today’s trend celebrates the intimacy of home. As a cooking instructor, I always say there’s no gesture more genuine than taking the time to create something delicious with our own hands.
For this celebration, let’s find balance: a simple technique with a gourmet result. Here’s a recipe that never fails.
FILET MIGNON IN GARLIC HERB BUTTER
Ingredients (Serves 2)
• 2 filet mignon medallions (200g each)
• 3 tbsp unsalted butter
• 2 crushed garlic cloves and one sprig of fresh rosemary
• 1 bunch of green asparagus
• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Preparation:
1.) Sear: Generously season the meat. In a very hot pan with a touch of oil, sear the medallions for 4 minutes per side for medium doneness.
2.) Infuse: Lower the heat and add the butter, garlic, and rosemary. Using a spoon, continuously baste the meat with the melted butter (arroser technique) for 2 minutes.
3.) Side: Remove the meat to rest. In the same pan, sauté the asparagus until tender and crisp.
Serve with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon and celebrate the joy of cooking from the heart.

MINNEAPOLIS FUE UN PUNTO DE QUIEBRE Y LA RENDICIÓN DE CUENTAS NO PUEDE ESPERAR

La muerte de Renee Nicole Good a manos de un agente de ICE en Minneapolis no fue una tragedia aislada. Fue una advertencia sobre lo que ocurre cuando las agencias federales operan con poder sin control, poca transparencia y consecuencias devastadoras para la gente común.
El 7 de enero de 2026, una madre de tres hijos perdió la vida durante una operación de ICE en un vecindario residencial. En cuestión de horas, los residentes de Minneapolis salieron a las calles, no por impulso, sino por dolor, miedo e indignación justificada. Lo que ocurrió ese día ya no es algo abstracto o lejano. Se trata de poder,
de responsabilidad y de cuyas vidas se consideran desechables.
Desde Mount Pleasant hasta North Charleston, desde Beaufort hasta Hilton Head, las familias se hacen la misma pregunta: ¿Podría pasar aquí? La respuesta honesta es sí, a menos que actuemos.
Las protestas que siguieron no son anti ley ni anti seguridad. Son a favor de la vida, de la responsabilidad y de la dignidad humana. Trazan una línea clara: ninguna agencia federal debe operar por encima de la ley y ninguna familia debe quedar en duelo sin respuestas.
Aquí en el Lowcountry, entendemos muy bien el miedo y la incertidumbre. Nuestro distrito es hogar de inmigrantes, familias afroamericanas, comunidades latinas, trabajadores y familias militares que
contribuyen cada día a nuestra economía y cultura. Sin embargo, muchos viven bajo la amenaza constante de tácticas agresivas de cumplimiento que separan familias y desestabilizan vecindarios.
Lo que hace diferente este momento es la magnitud y la claridad de la respuesta. En todo el país, la gente exige transparencia en la investigación, responsabilidad para los involucrados y una reconsideración fundamental de cómo opera la aplicación de leyes migratorias en nuestros vecindarios.

La preparación también requiere coordinación. Las redes de respuesta rápida, los observadores legales y los grupos de ayuda mutua son esenciales para proteger a los manifestantes, documentar abusos y apoyar a las familias afectadas por acciones de cumplimiento. Solidaridad con los inmigrantes del Lowcountry que viven con miedo a redadas en sus propios vecindarios. Solidaridad entre razas, idiomas y estatus migratorio, porque el abuso de poder sin control nunca se detiene en una sola comunidad.
Esto es más que ICE. Es un asunto de derechos civiles. Es un asunto moral. Y es una pregunta sobre qué tipo de distrito y de país elegimos ser.
¿Aceptamos un sistema donde agentes federales pueden quitar una vida y enfrentar poco escrutinio? ¿O exigimos transparencia, supervisión y reformas que pongan la vida humana primero?
Minneapolis debe ser un punto de inflexión. Pero los puntos de inflexión solo importan si la gente actúa.
Las calles están hablando. Las comunidades se están movilizando y el Lowcountry debe estar preparado, antes de que otra familia quede destrozada, antes de que otro nombre se convierta en un grito, y antes de que la justicia vuelva a retrasarse.

The killing of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis was not an isolated tragedy. It was a warning about what happens when federal agencies operate with unchecked power, little transparency, and devastating consequences for everyday people.
On January 7, 2026, a mother of three lost her life during an ICE operation in a residential neighborhood. Within hours, Minneapolis residents filled the streets, not out of impulse, but out of grief, fear, and
justified anger. What happened that day is no longer abstract or distant. It is about power, accountability, and whose lives are treated as expendable.
From Mount Pleasant to North Charleston, from Beaufort to Hilton Head, families are asking the same question: Could this happen here? The honest answer is yes, unless we act.
The protests that followed are not anti-law or anti-safety. They are pro-life, proaccountability, and pro-human dignity. They draw a clear line: no federal agency should operate above the law, and no family should be left grieving without answers.
Here in the Lowcountry, we understand fear and uncertainty all too well. Our district is home to immigrants, Black families, Latino communities, workers, and military families who contribute every day to our economy and culture. Yet many live under the constant threat of aggressive enforcement tactics that tear families apart and destabilize neighborhoods.
What makes this moment different is the scale and clarity of the response. Across the country, people are demanding transparency in the investigation, accountability for those responsible, and a fundamental rethinking of how immigration enforcement operates in our neighborhoods.
But outrage alone is not enough. Communities must be prepared, organized, informed, and united.
Preparation begins with education. Every resident should know their civil and constitutional rights and understand how to safely interact with federal agents. Fear thrives in uncertainty; knowledge is protection. Community organizations, legal advocates, and faith leaders play a critical role in sharing this information and ensuring no one faces these encounters alone.
Preparation also requires coordination. Rapid-response networks, legal observers, and mutual aid groups are essential to protecting protesters, documenting abuses, and supporting families affected by enforcement actions. These structures transform pain into purpose and ensure accountability when institutions fail.
And let’s be clear: peaceful protest is not a threat to public safety, it is a pillar of democracy! When people gather in Charleston, Beaufort, or Hilton Head to demand justice, they are exercising the same constitutional rights generations before us fought to protect. Organized, disciplined, and peaceful action is how change has always been made in South Carolina and across the South.
At the heart of this movement is solidarity. Solidarity with Renee Good’s family, who deserve answers, accountability, and justice. Solidarity with immigrants in the Lowcountry who live in fear of raids in their own neighborhoods. Solidarity across race, language, and legal status because unchecked abuse of power never stops with one community.
This is more than ICE. It is a civil rights issue. It is a moral issue. And it is a question of what kind of district and country we choose to be.
Do we accept a system where federal agents can take a life and face little scrutiny? Or do we demand transparency, oversight, and reforms that put human life first?
Minneapolis should be a turning point. But turning points only matter if people act. The streets are speaking. Communities are mobilizing and the Lowcountry must be prepared, before another family is shattered, before another name becomes a chant, and before justice is delayed yet again.
