The Goals of a Sacred Heart Education

The philosophy that is characteristic of Sacred Heart education is expressed through five goals:

1. A Personal and Active Faith in God

We endeavour to provide an environment in which students’ faith is nurtured in trust and freedom. Students are encouraged to reflect on their life experiences in the light of the scriptures so as to deepen the Christian meaning of their lives.

2. A Deep Respect for Intellectual Values

We encourage our students to enjoy learning, find it a meaningful experience and understand that learning includes many experiences beyond the classroom. We hope students will leave us possessing a life-long love of learning. The organisation of our teaching and learning program is designed to encourage each student to learn and achieve to the best of his or her ability.

3. The Building of Community as a Christian Value

Parents, staff and students strive to provide a real experience of community. The Christian values underlying that community are made explicit and students are encouraged to develop the skills required for living as just and responsible citizens in a challenging world.

4. A Social Awareness Which Impels to Action

The school values programs which involve students and the wider community. This provides an opportunity for students to understand and appreciate differences in race, religion and culture, and encourages them to act against oppression and injustice.

5. Personal Growth in an Atmosphere of Wise Freedom

The school encourages each individual to be aware of his or her gifts and limitations and to recognise that everyone can make a unique contribution to his or her peers, society and world.

A-Z of Important Information

Attendance

• Parents are advised well in advance of the dates of Kincoppal – Rose Bay Junior School (Barat-Burn) school holidays and are asked to adhere strictly to these. Government regulations require parents to apply for a Certificate of Exemption from the Principal for extended leave during school terms.

• Students must attend school and classes punctually. If a student is late, he/she needs to be signed in at Barat-Burn Reception before going to class. No student may leave the grounds during school hours except with written permission from parents and the Head of Junior School. If parents collect their child within school hours, they need to sign him/her out at Barat-Burn Reception.

• If a student is sick and unable to attend school, parents must inform Barat-Burn Reception by email (juniorschool@krb.nsw.edu.au) and copy in the classroom teacher as per their KRB email address.

• Parents are asked to make medical and dental appointments outside school hours.

• If parents are away from home for more than a few days, the Head of Junior School must be notified by email and given means of contact. In the case of overseas travel, the name, address and phone number of someone to act for parents must be provided.

• Please visit the Policies and Procedures page on the Aspire portal to access the Extended Leave Request Form.

Before and After School Care

Students are required to be registered with the Before and After School Care provider before attending. Full details of before/after school care can be obtained at Junior School Reception.

Students must not be dropped off to school prior to 8.00am and be left unattended. Staff are not on duty before 8.00am.

Barat-Burn Reception

Barat-Burn Reception is open from 8.00am–4.00pm daily. Phone: 9388 6080

Email: juniorschool@krb.nsw.edu.au

Birthday Celebrations

It is recommended that birthday celebrations be simple and appropriate and that sensitivity towards others be a major consideration. If parents wish the children to have a simple celebration at school, our nut aware policy must be followed and consideration of keeping sugar intake to a minimum is required.

Invitations to birthday parties are to be delivered to students outside of school so as to avoid unnecessary upset to those students not invited.

Excursion Policy

Excursions are an important part of the school's academic and pastoral programs. In planning for an excursion, the school bases the cost on the number of students expected to attend. Parents are asked to complete a permission form indicating that their child may attend. In the case of a student being absent from the excursion, it is not possible to provide a refund, once this permission form has been signed.

Home Learning and Assignments

Home Learning is essential for effective learning at every level. We recommend a regular pattern for completion of Home Learning in a quiet environment. The school Home Learning policy is discussed at each class level and a copy can be found in the School Student Planner.

Homework Centre Program – Years 5 and 6

During the school week from Monday – Thursday inclusive, the school operates a Homework Centre for students in Years 5 to 12. The Homework Centre is situated within the Mary Agnes O’Neil Library in the Senior School and is available at no charge to students in Years 5 and 6 from 3.30pm–5.30pm.

The Homework Centre provides a secure, supervised homework environment where research is made easier by ready access to resources, technology and professional guidance. Teachers are rostered on as tutors and students are able to obtain assistance with their homework, assignment preparation and research enquiries. Year 5 and Year 6 parents who wish their child to attend Homework Centre are required to advise the Senior Library by clicking on the link which will be provided on the Year 5 and Year 6 class pages on the school communication tool ‘Aspire’.

Junior School Library

The Junior School Library is a centre for reading for pleasure, study and research. The Library is open each day from 8.00am–3.00pm and on a rostered basis for students at lunchtime from 12.50pm–1.30pm. Parents’ & Friends’ Association of Kincoppal – Rose Bay (P&F)

Role of the Class Representatives

Being a class representative is an enjoyable way of involving yourself in the life of our school. Class representatives are the working committee of the P&F. They are vital to the functioning of the P&F and to the KRB community.

Class Representatives have two main functions:

• To provide support to the school, for class or general school events.

• To provide support to the P&F, in its community and fundraising endeavours.

Class Representatives’ support of the school includes:

• Assisting the school in the organising of school events as requested by the Head of the Junior School or class teachers, for example:

o In the Junior School, this may entail the relevant class representatives helping with the ELC end of year celebration and the end of year celebration in Year 6.

Class Representatives’ support of the P&F includes:

• Attending P&F Meetings (once a term), ensuring any minutes or other information from these meetings is passed on to any class representatives who are unable to attend.

Organising a whole class function once a year.

• Welcoming new parents to the class:

o Making contact with new parents offering assistance with any information they might need to help them settle into the school.

o Offering the opportunity to meet briefly either at the School or for morning tea.

o Providing them with any written material that will assist them in becoming a part of the school community: class lists, P&F Committee and class representative lists, calendar of P&F events, notices about upcoming events, etc.

Parent/Teacher Communication

• All communications between parents and staff will be via Aspire (under the ‘School’ tab at krb.nsw.edu.au).

• A ‘Meet the Teacher’ style parent/teacher interview is scheduled early Term 1.

• Inquiries about your child’s academic progress, social issues or class matters should be directed in the first instance to the class teacher. This may be done by email or by phoning Junior School Reception (9388 6080). Other matters should be brought to the attention of the Deputy Head of Junior School, Teaching and Learning, or the Deputy Head of Junior School, Wellbeing and Operations and then the Head of Junior School.

• Information regarding your child’s learning is provided throughout the term, through ‘Continuous Reporting’, whereby examples of your child’s learning, rubrics to explain achievement and information outlining growth points and next steps in learning, are posted throughout the term. This information can be accessed via Aspire – select “My Students”/your child’s name.
