Year 7-12 Handbook 2026

Welcome to KRB’s Senior School

It is such an exciting journey that you are about to start. The Senior School is filled with students who want to learn and educators who want to teach. During your first few days and weeks, you will be meeting other students who will be your life-long friends. You will meet teachers who will make a profound impact on your learning.

The gift of a Sacred Heart education should never be taken for granted. It is not our goal for you to always be the best, but it is important that you always strive to be at your best.

At KRB, we inspire our students to challenge themselves, show strong leadership and to strive for excellence. We want you to leave KRB with skills of confidence, compassion, agency and resilience.

We are committed to facilitating both the personal and academic growth of our students by embedding our bespoke Wellbeing framework, SELF +, across all areas of the Senior School. We combine this with contemporary and individualised teaching practices to best meet the needs of our students.

As students’ progress through the Senior School, across both Day and Boarding, they are supported and encouraged to be their best, and to be ‘seriously begun’...”

2. A Deep Respect for Intellectual Values

We hope students will leave us possessing a life-long love of learning. The organisation of our teaching and learning program is designed to encourage each student to learn and achieve to the best of his or her ability.

Learning Advantage Program

The KRB Learning Advantage Program provides each student in Years 7-12 with an individual notebook computer. This program aims to maximise learning by providing students with ready access to technology for educational purposes both on and o! campus.

The lease cycle for the notebook computer is three years, providing students with fresh up to-date technology including:

•A lightweight full featured notebook computer with all the latest software linked to the KRB curriculum.

•Total coverage for warranty/repairs during term. If significant time for repair is required, a replacement computer will be provided.

•Onsite servicing.

•Information sessions for students are held each year prior to the distribution of the Notebook computers. These sessions cover familiarisation with the Notebook computer, how to care for it and how to use it as a tool to maximise learning.

SELF+ Wellbeing Framework

SELF+ (Social Emotional Learning to Flourish) has been uniquely developed to meet the needs of all KRB students (boys and girls in Barat-Burn, day and boarding students in the Senior School) as they progress through our school from the Early Learning Centre to Year 12; it is informed by the science of positive psychology and is underpinned by an understanding of the five Sacred Heart Goals.

Positive Education is a concept that informs the educational experience of all students at KRB. Positive Education is defined as the combination of traditional educational principles with the study of happiness and science of wellbeing (Seligman, 2011). Applying key tenets of Positive Education, known as PERMA(H) (Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment and Health) is crucial to developing the wellbeing of students.

The KRB Student Wellbeing Framework applies these by ensuring each individual develops Social, Emotional, and Learning skills in order to flourish.

KRB’s Student Wellbeing Framework is wellinformed by current research and has a focus on the evidence-based concepts Gratitude, Growth Mindset, Mindfulness, Resilience and the identification of VIA Character Strengths.

Homework Centre

During the week, the school runs a Homework Centre for Years 7 to 12 situated in the Mary Agnes O’Neil Library. Students are able to book sessions with teachers and tutors, who specialise in a range of subjects to support them in their learning and assist with their homework or assignment preparation. There is no charge for Homework Centre support which runs Monday to Thursday from 3.30pm to 6.00pm for day students and continues into the evening until 8.30pm for boarders.

Homework Centre supervision in the Mary Agnes O’Neil Library is also available to Years 5 and 6 students from 3.30pm to 5.30pm Monday to Thursday. Students are supervised by Barat-Burn sta! who are able to support them in the completion of their home learning tasks.

During examination periods such as the Higher School Certificate, the Mary Agnes O’Neil Library is open for students in Years 11 and 12 on Sundays between 10.00am and 5.00pm.

Tutoring

In addition to Homework Centre support, private tutoring for Years 7 to 12 students can take place in the Library Monday to Thursday. Day students can work with tutors until 6.00pm and boarders are able to work with tutors until 8.30pm. Our tutors are approved by the school, based on their subject expertise and tutoring experience. This is a paid service where session times and financial arrangements are negotiated between the parent and tutor.

Peer Tutoring

The Peer Tutoring program aims to support younger students who would benefit from assistance with their schoolwork. It is also seen as an opportunity to increase the contact between senior and junior students and to provide valuable leadership experience. Year 10 Peer Tutors work with Junior School students from a variety of age groups.

Students meet weekly and contact is made regularly with the class teacher who is consulted about the work being done.

Mobile Phones

No earbuds or mobile phones are permitted as you enter the school gates until you leave school in the afternoon. Phones must be locked in your locker.

Tech-Free Thursday

Every Thursday we are Tech-Free from K-10 for all students. This enables a chance to learn in an environment free from devices for the day.

Student Leadership Opportunities

Developing leadership skills is an important part of a Sacred Heart education. For students to contribute meaningfully to society they must first be able to speak and act with confidence and conviction. Kincoppal –Rose Bay School is committed to developing students who can reflect this idea. In education building students’ capacity to lead is an essential skill in their future lives and in the words of Mother Janet Erskine Stuart allows them to come out ‘seriously begun’.

Whilst there are specific roles that will allow students to listen to and advocate for their cohort, at KRB student leadership is not confined to those in leadership positions, as leadership potential is inherent within all learners across all stages, and it is our responsibility to nurture and develop this. Opportunities for leadership may take place in the classroom, on the sporting field, within the larger school community and environment or even as a mentor to other students.

Through developing an understanding of ‘leadership’ students will develop; the ability to define their own identities, the art of building positive relationships, collaborative and communication skills, problem solving skills, time management and organisational skills, and the ability to be active citizens who value their community.

Our focus on nurturing student leadership is in direct response to our Sacred Heart Mission. Studies show that through developing more authentic student voice and agency through leadership, there are continued improvements to student health, wellbeing and success in achieving their learning outcomes.

Through developing this strong and authentic voice we will then be able to intrinsically develop a student’s sense of agency, where they feel they have the power to direct and take responsibility for their learning. Through this, we will see greater development of self regulating learners who are independent, initiative driven and have a social awareness that impels to action.

Therefore, we develop leaders who:

• use the wisdom of the Sacred Heart to discern and make wise decisions based on the integrity and values of the community.

• are active citizens who take initiative to serve the community and be positive change makers within it.

• are authentic to self, empowering others to foster their strengths and abilities through collaboration and communication.

Kincoppal - Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart

Sport

Kincoppal – Rose Bay School belongs to the Independent Girls’ Schools Sports Association (IGSA). This is a sporting competition among 27 independent girls’ schools in NSW.

Senior School students compete in team and individual sports at school level and can be selected through IGSA for State and National representative teams and higher competitions. Most competitions are held on Saturday mornings at member schools.

It is school policy that all students are required to participate in at least one sport per term.

We o!er all students the opportunity to choose a di!erent sport each season and all sport choices will be done electronically through the online registration.

Terms 1 and 4 sports and Terms 2 and 3 sports will remain the same for the duration of the year.

Students will be unable to change their sports selection between Terms 2 and 3 or Terms 1 and 4.

Kincoppal – Rose Bay School holds interhouse competitions in swimming, athletics and cross country. The House Captains also organise regular interhouse activities.

There are weekly after school classes in swimming, fitness, gymnastics, tennis and dance.

See the Aspire Sports page for all sports on offer over the year.

House System

All students at Kincoppal – Rose Bay are allocated a House for the duration of their time at the School.

There are the four Houses.

Arakoola = To win (green/frog)

Kungala = Something to shout about (yellow/tiger)

Murramai = Good luck (red/rabbit)

Tangara = To go (blue/beetle).

Students represent their House in various school events such as the Swimming, Athletics and Cross-Country Carnivals. If a new student to the school has an already established family connection to a certain House, that student will be placed in the same House.

Arakoola (Green) Kungala (Yellow)
Murramai (Red) Tangara (Blue)

IGNITE Co-curricular

KRB values the growth that occurs through student engagement in activities that challenge, inspire and develop capacity beyond the classroom curriculum.

The IGNITE Co-curricular program o!ers activities to students that focus on the following areas:

• Community and Active Service

• Global and Future Competencies

• Sport and Movement

• Creative and Performing Arts

• Intellectual Pursuits and Challenges

We encourage all students to engage in a continuum of co-curricular learning. Participation in the IGNITE program is recognised on the students’ reports each semester.

Through the IGNITE Program, students will develop a range of skills aimed at the growth and development of confident and independent learners.

Information about Co-curricular Activities is available on ASPIRE.

National and International Opportunities for Students

One of the many benefits of being part of a global Sacred Heart Network of schools is the ability to o!er exchange programs to students. These exchanges present an ideal opportunity for students to grow in confidence and independence as well as gain invaluable global understanding.

1. ANZNET Exchange

The four Sacred Heart Schools that make up the Australasian Province are Kincoppal - Rose Bay School, Sacré Coeur Melbourne, Stuartholme Brisbane and Baradene College Auckland, New Zealand. Throughout the year students have the opportunity to visit these Sacred Heart Schools to experience a new school situation as well as enjoy time with a host family and community. Students in Years 8–10 are encouraged to participate in this program.

2. The Global Exchange

Exchange opportunities are also available for senior students with our network of schools around the world. Students have participated in exchanges with schools in France, Japan, Taiwan, Canada and the United States – in New York, Connecticut and Boston. Students from our sister schools spend time with us for about three weeks in June/July and our students go overseas during the Christmas/New Year holidays and other negotiated times. Priority is given to students in Years 10 and 11 for this program.

3. Overseas Tours

There are opportunities for students to participate in cultural, social justice, sporting, and curriculumbased tours.

When students are unwell, the HCC has various over the counter medications available to the students. These will not be administered to any student without consent via the Student Health Care Form.

Senior School students must present to the School Nurse for assessment before they are given permission to go home when unwell. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get involved in committees?

Committees are held on Wednesday Week B for anyone in Years 7–12 to join. You can swap between committees each week and you can find their location in the Student Notices.

How do I join a KRB sports team?

You need to fill in a sports contract on Aspire. Trials for teams are usually in the middle of the term before this sport starts, and you need to have handed in your contract before then. Notification about these trials is in the Student Notices.

If I don’t want to play a Saturday sport, are there any other sports activities I can do?

There are sports such as yoga and fitness which you can participate in instead of or as well as ‘Saturday Sport’. You can enrol in these by filling in the relevant form on Aspire.

What happens if I get lost and can’t find my class, or my class isn’t in the room it says on my timetable?

Go to Student Reception so your timetable can be checked for room changes. If you’re still not sure, check the Library. If you can’t find Student Reception, ask a teacher or another student to point you in the right direction.

Can I wear my sports uniform to and from school?

No, you’re not allowed to wear your sports uniform to and from school (unless you are wearing it from home to an early morning sports training, after which you have to get changed back into your normal dress/tunic). Can I walk in and out of the School through the Senior School Reception?

No. Students must only leave and enter through Student Reception.

What leadership opportunities are there for students?

Each and every student at Kincoppal – Rose Bay is given the opportunity to build their capacity for leadership throughout the year in a variety of events. When it comes to specific positions, students in Years 8-11 can

apply to be members of the SRC, Social Justice Reps, Liturgy Reps, Environment Reps, Global Reps or Wellness leaders. These positions are nominated by students with a written application and then decided.
