Art can be seen, heard and tasted Saturday at the Downtown Muskogee Art Crawl.
The Art Crawl brings artists, musicians and food vendors to downtown Muskogee’s Katy District — along Main Street between Okmulgee Avenue and Elgin Street. Restaurants, antique dealers, art galleries and other vendors also will greet visitors from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday.
This is the second year for the crawl.
Sue Vanderford, an Art Crawl coordinator, said last year’s event drew 300 to 400 visitors to South Main Street.
“We had woodworkers, metal artist, painters, face painters, entertainers,” Vanderford said. “People wandered in and out of the shops.”
People can expect to see more vendors this year, said

Rumbling tractors bring memories of farms gone by at this weekend’s Wagoner Tractor Show.
The Wagoner Tractor Show, sponsored by the Oklahoma Antique Tractor Association, will run 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Wagoner’s Dunbar Park.
Association president Steve Young said the association seeks to show people how farming used to be done.
“We try to educate the public about the yesteryears of farming,” Young said. “Nowadays, there are so many people who are not part of the farming industry. We want to show them a part of the past.”
The show will feature a tractor parade, lawnmower races and a tractor pull. There also will be demonstrations in cow milking, rope making, blacksmithing and a hay press.
Wagoner County Commissioner Chris Edwards said the show will be like “a history book to pass to the next generation.”
“If people don’t keep stuff like this around to hand down to the next generation, pretty soon they kind of lose track that these tractors, the old antique tractors, is what got us to where we are today in the farming industry,”
Edwards said.
He said tractors also

SATURDAY SCHEDULE
• 10:30 a.m. — Tractor pulls.
• 11 a.m. — Parade of Power.
• Noon — Iron Legacy Band.
• 1 p.m. — Lawn mower races.

bring back memories for old farmers.
“That might have been one of the old tractors they drove on,” Edwards said. “It kind of allows them to relive a little bit of history or the past, when they were growing up.”
Edwards keeps and uses several old tractors on the family farm west of Wag-

oner. They include a 1936 John Deere tractor.
“You start it by spinning a flywheel by hand,” Edwards said. “It doesn’t have a battery or key switch. It was the biggest tractor John Deere made of its kind. That’s what the old timers plowed wheat fields with.”
He also has a 1939 Farmall.
“That was the tractor my dad first learned how to drive,” Edwards said. “He was born in ‘39 and so was the tractor.”
Young said this year’s featured tractor is Farmall, which was known for its bright red rigs.
“We’ll be seeing a lot of them,” Young said. “Most will have the narrow frontends on them.”
Farmalls were made by International Harvester.
“It was their row crop tractor,” Young said. “You could do everything with that tractor on the farm.”
The show also will feature a variety of other
tractors, including bright green John Deeres, Fords and Massey Fergusons.
Retired doctor, John Jackson of Wagoner, will bring a comparatively new model, a 1974 Massey Ferguson.
“It was a top-of-the-line Massey Ferguson 135,” he said. “It’s a diesel. It’s got wheel weights on it, power steering, multi-speed transmission. It had everything on it Massey Ferguson offered.”
He said he bought the tractor in 1999, then restored it.
“The tractor was kept inside, and there was no rust or dents or dings at all,” he said.
Jackson said he had to replace a front seal in the water pump, remove a front bonnet or radiator.
“It took me a year and a half to restore it,” he said. “I put a lot of new stuff on it.”

“We specialize in outdoor photo sessions,” she said.
She said they will have samples of their works and will have a photo montage of Muskogee for sale.
Muskogee Art Guild will have a booth with information about its programs and events, Guild member Paula Hefley said. Art also will be for sale.
“We have some art items that members have donated,” Hefley said.
Amanda Guthrie of Action Imprints said she’ll offer some original printed T-shirts and other clothing.
“We’re printing a whole bunch of T-Shirts, a lot of them are Oklahoma or Muskogee themed,” Guthrie said. “We’ve got several other outdoorsy things as well. We’ll be embroidering hats with scissortail flycatchers and “Okie from Muskogee” and the Oklahoma flag symbol.” People also can expect to hear a variety of musicians, some promoted through the Make Music Muskogee.
Lauri Henderson said the organization is part of the Make Music Alliance, an organization promoting live music “holidays” in communities.
Henderson said musicians include guitarist and vocalist Shayla Coplen and 13-year-old guitarist Reed Stout.
“We hope to have a mix of different styles,” Henderson said.
People also can crawl in for some culinary arts.
Tammi Sawyer of Da’ Sawyers Eats and Sweets said she plans items such as cupcakes and Rosey’s strawberry lemonade. Sawyer said her daughter, Jacee, created the lemonade when she was 6, and it has been a popular treat ever since.
“She called it Rosey’s because that was her stage name,” Sawyer said. “She kept saying ‘add more strawberries.’”

A Wacky Boat Race is a new, fun way to participate in the Grand River Dam Authority Scenic Rivers Fall Fest 2017 on Saturday.
The Kiwanis Club, with its annual Race for the Kids, is partnering with GRDA to create a festival atmosphere from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Diamondhead Resort, 12081 Oklahoma 10.
While an emphasis of the event is cleanup, education and water safety for kids, many fun activities
are planned for community members who come out to enjoy a day on the river.
This year, the two groups decided teaming up would benefit everyone.
The Illinois River is the best-known river in Oklahoma, according to Ed Fite, GRDA vice president of Scenic Rivers and Water Quality.
“It’s a people’s river, it’s a scenic river first, and a four seasons river,” said Fite. “The more we partner with non-governmental and community organizations, and preserve and protect it, the
more the public gets to use it. The door is always open to partnerships at GRDA.”
Spring floods made it necessary to postpone the event, according to Tom Barnard, past president and board member for the Kiwanis Club.
“By adding the extra events and combining our activities, we’re making it more like a festival,” he said. “This is one of our main fundraisers.”
Many vendors will have booths, there will be free hot

dogs, and DocFell & Co. will perform. Life jackets for kids will be given away.
“There will be volunteers from several fire departments with their fire trucks, search and rescue, maybe two helicopters from GRDA and Eagle Med if nothing is going on, and the fan rescue boat for the river – all for kids to check out,” Barnard said. “And kids will be learning about water safety.”
The Kiwanis Club has been doing the canoe and kayak race for five or six years, said Barnard. Entry fee is $25. The 3.8-mile race begins at Edmondson Public Access and ends at Diamondhead Resort.
“The canoe and kayak races are a lot of fun. There’s a group of people who are really serious, but a lot of people come out to have fun,” Barnard said. “There are a lot of smiles all around, so you know everyone is having a good time.”
Registration for the canoe and kayak races is at 9 a.m. and the race begins shortly afterward.
For the Wacky Boat Race, participants can decorate a vessel or make a floating raft.
“The Wacky Boat Race is a fun idea. It might take a few years it to catch on, but I’ve seen it get really big in other cities,” said Barnard.
One non-perishable food item is the entry fee for the Wacky Boat Race, according to Nancy Sanchez, Fite’s assistant.
“We hope people will really get into it and decorate a vessel; there are prizes for that,” said Sanchez.
Four kayaks will be prizes for competitions – two for the canoe race, one for the kayak race and one for the Rubber Ducky Race.
For entries into the afternoon Rubber Ducky Race, participants can purchase one ticket for $5 or five for $20, with prizes for winners.
Proceeds of the Kiwanis’ activities all go to support kids programs.
“We have between 30 and 35 activities for youth,” said Barnard. “We donated to the new special-needs part the city is doing and we do the BUG program – Bringing Up Grades –and give away bikes to 11 area schools.”
Sanchez said the cleanup is her favorite part of the event.
“I’m responsible for the cleanup and enjoy the concept and seeing the people who keep coming back and take their time to help,” said Sanchez. “And it’s a good way to end the season.”

Viewed from outside its gates, Cumbernauld Studios in a leafy suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, appears to be an unremarkable blue corrugated steel building, the type that one would easily mistake for a warehouse. But step inside and the woodshop, seamstress rooms, production offices and film sets tell you something more is afoot here than just storage.
It’s actually the production home of the Starz time-travel/ romance series “Outlander,” which returns for its third season Sunday, Sept. 10. On this sunny mid-October day in central Scotland, a group of journalists toured the impressive sprawling facility, watched filming, interviewed cast and crew and, of course, got to check out the standing stones of Craigh na Dun, the ones that World War II nurse Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) crossed through to the
18th century and her lover across time, Scotsman Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), to open the series.
Standing in a storage area with other props, these stones are about 10 feet high, hollow and made from foam. They’re light enough that a gust of wind can knock them over, as can happen in the Scottish Highlands shooting location where they’re deployed. One even had to be replaced after being broken in a fall.
It is through these stones, as Season 3 opens, that Claire, pregnant with Jamie’s child, has crossed back to her life in 1948 and is now struggling with the fallout from her reappearance and its effect on her marriage to first husband Frank (Tobias Menzies). She’s trying to make a go of it with this man that she does not truly love, and does her best over the course of 20 years to forget Jamie. But of
course, that’s easier said than done.
“I think the biggest thing for me starting this season,” explains Balfe, seated at a table near one of the sets, “was to remember that for Claire, she believes Jamie dead. So once you sort of go through the grieving process and you sort of allow yourself to put that person aside, there has to be this moment of – you know, Claire really wants this relationship to work on many levels.
“You know, here is somebody who’s accepted her back and he’s accepted her reasons for being away, more or less,” she continues. “And he’s agreed to raise (Jamie’s) daughter as his own, so there’s a lot of admiration there for what Frank is offering her and I think that she wants more than anything else that she can make this work. But of course, it’s more difficult than that.”

Catriona Balfe and Tobias Menzies star in “Outlander,” which opens its third season Sunday on Starz.
Meanwhile back in the 18th century, Jamie suffers in the aftermath of his doomed last stand in the Battle of Culloden and his loss of Claire. He never expected to survive the historic battle, and now must move forward into a difficult life that includes a prison sentence and memories of what was.
“The process, firstly, (is to figure out) who is he and why is he still alive,” Heughan says. “Then he has to discover that he actually has something to live for, and that’s his remaining family. And then he has to rebuild himself from having nothing, from being a rebel, from being an outlaw living in a prison, so he rebuilds his life.
“And also he has to go through that grief,” he continues, “the grief of losing Claire and then the pain and the anger and then eventually the acceptance, and move forward. So he’s got a lot to contend with, but it’s an interesting story.”

After the success of her series’ first season, it may be a challenge to deliver “Better Things” to Pamela Adlon.
A Peabody Award and a current Emmy nomination are among the rewards reaped by the longtime actress and voice artist for her seriocomic FX show that starts its second round Thursday, Sept. 14. Adlon returns as Sam Fox, a candid single-mom actress whose complicated personal life, neighboring mother (Celia Imrie) and three daughters (Mikey Madison, Hannah Alligood, Olivia Edward) keep her hopping ... as with her fierce determination to end one of the girls’ romance during a house party in a new episode.
“I feel like each episode is kind of like a little short film,” says Adlon, who also has directed all of them for Season 2. She explains that Sam is “going deeper and exploring and getting uncomfortable. The first season, (it was) trying to find our way and balance, and certainly me trying to find my voice in the character. I’ve been working my whole life and then, all of a sudden, I’m essentially playing myself and I’m like, ‘How does she talk? Do I give manicures and pedicures for a living? No. Just be the person that you are.’ Now, it just feels like we are living in this world.”
Already an Emmy winner for her vocal work on the animated “King of the Hill,” the raspy-voiced Adlon works closely on “Better Things” with comedian and “Louie” star Louis C.K., who co-created and executive-produces it along with her. “Louis encouraged me to kind of take over my show directing-wise,” she notes. I’m too much of a control freak about this environment and the whole thing
that it might be difficult for me to let somebody take it over, probably – except (him).“
However, Adlon allows that her own life got her ready to be “Better Things” star, usual writer or co-writer, and now full-time director. “I’ve been raising my three daughters and doing it on my own, and that’s like the best boot camp for something like this,” she reflects. “I’m able to multitask. And my show is very handmade, so it was a natural progression for me.”

If you’ve ever had a hankering to try your hand at recreating dishes from iconic movies or TV shows, Andrew Rea is way ahead of you.
On his YouTube channel “Binging With Babish” (named in honor of Oliver Platt’s character on “The West Wing”), the Harlem, N.Y.-based chef and videographer takes a crack at everything from the courtesan au chocolat from “Grand Budapest Hotel” and the Fitz sandwich from “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” to the wild mushroom soup in “The Soup Nazi” episode of “Seinfeld” and the prison pasta sauce in “Goodfellas.”
That last recipe, one of Rea’s most viewed videos, debunks the notion that garlic sliced very thin with a razor blade liquefies in the pan with some olive oil. According to Rea, who tried it, it doesn’t. But the rest of the scene rang true and he took the on-screen description and ran with it.
“I just sort of (thought): What would a classic Italian red sauce be?” Rea explains. “What would they have done, especially in the ’70s, when Italian food was kind of in a very special place? And just sort of followed those guidelines. Followed – he said three onions, two big cans of tomatoes, presumably 28 ounce cans of tomatoes and those meats and just simmer for ages. That would just be the age-old method for making red sauce.”
The result, Rea says, was a spectacular sauce on both screen and plate.
“It was gorgeous,” says Rea, who has a book coming out next month titled “Eat What You Watch: A Cookbook for Movie Lovers.” “I’m a lover of Italian red sauce. And the places where I get to take creative latitude are like how I make the meatballs and things like that. So I got to make those exactly

the way I would like to make them, and also the way you’d think they would be made in prison or in the ’70s, just bread crumbs and eggs and a couple of dried herbs. But that ends up in a really nice meatball.”
Some recipes were research-intensive, such as the strudel from “Inglourious Basterds” (“I had to basically research as much as I could how strudel would have been made presumably in France during that time period,” he says); others, like the courtesan au chocolat in “Budapest,” came right with the DVD. And still others turned out to be not real dishes, like the milk steak with jelly beans from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” which he calls “an absolute nightmare.”
Viewer requests often supply Rea with much of his show’s fodder, though some can get quite strange and even a little gruesome, like the multiple requests for anything from “Hannibal.”
“I have a plan to address that and find ways to re-create that with pork,” Rea says, “which apparently is the closest thing that you can get to human meat, according to some very grisly articles that I’ve read online. And so I will be doing that around Halloween. ... There are so many crazy requests all the time.”

Elisabeth Moss

Four years after the events of the original “Top of the Lake,” Golden Globe winner Elisabeth Moss and her character of haunted police detective Robin Griffin resurface in a new murder mystery airing this week on SundanceTV.
In “Top of the Lake: China Girl,” a six-hour miniseries airing in two-hour blocks Sunday through Tuesday, Sept. 10-12, Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Mad Men”) reprises her role as Robin, who is back in her native Sydney trying to rebuild her life. When the body of an Asian girl washes up on nearby Bondi Beach, there appears to be little hope of finding the killer, until Robin realizes she didn’t die alone. She’s looking at the investigation as a way to restore herself, but her anguish over the daughter she gave up at birth and the truth about her conception weigh on her heavily. As she descends into the city’s dark recesses to learn the dead girl’s identity, she’s forced to come to grips with her own personal demons.

going to be a mother to Mary, essentially somebody who is a stranger. And, you know, she is not even necessarily a friend. She knows nothing about her, and yet she has to kind of figure out what their relationship is. So that’s the kind of main challenge for her.
“Robin is, the entire season, faced with her own ideas of how life should be,” Moss continues, “being challenged by Gwen’s character Miranda, by Alice’s character Mary, and by Nicole’s character Julia. They are just constantly pushing her buttons and challenging her, and ... the most important thing for her is to solve this case. It’s always the most important thing for her. And then in typical ‘Top of the Lake’ fashion, of course, the personal always kind of lines up with the political, and she has to kind of figure out both.”

“Riviera,” www.sundancenow.com
This stylish thriller on the recently launched Sundance Now streaming service stars Julia Stiles (“Blackway”) as the wife of a billionaire killed in a yacht explosion, who learns the fortune that sustained their lifestyle in the South of France is tainted by dishonesty, double-dealing and murder. The international cast includes Lena Olin (“Chocolat”), Adrian Lester (“Primary Colors”), Anthony La Paglia (“Without a Trace”) and Iwan Rheon (“Game of Thrones”).

The story comes from “Lake” creator/writer Jane Campion and also stars Oscar winner Nicole Kidman (“The Hours,” “Big Little Lies”) as Julia, the adoptive mother of Robin’s daughter; Gwendoline Christie (“Game of Thrones”) as Miranda, Robin’s police partner; Alice Englert as Mary, the 17-year-old daughter Robin gave up for adoption; and David Dencik as Alexander, Mary’s 42-year-old boyfriend, who is associated with a brothel.
“For me, this season is so much about motherhood,” Moss explains, “and Robin’s ... main challenge is to figure out how she’s

“American Vandal,” www.netflix.com/ title/80117545
This true-crime satire from co-creators Tony Yacenda (“Pillow Talking”) and Dan Perrault (“Honest Trailers”), and showrunner Dan Lagana (“Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous”) explores the cost of a high-school prank that left 27 faculty cars spray-painted with phallic symbols. Over eight episodes, a sophomore documentarian investigates the controversial and potentially unjust expulsion of a troubled senior.
After garnering critical acclaim and an Emmy nomination for “Big Little Lies,” Kidman welcomed the chance to be back on familiar ground collaborating with Campion, who she’s known since she was 14, and with whom she has worked on projects including the 1996 theatrical drama “The Portrait of a Lady.”
“It’s lovely to be what I call a ‘Campion woman’ because, yeah, there’s a truth to it,” Kidman says. “There’s an honesty. It’s not a presentation of a female. It’s just the female, and there’s all the different aspects to it. I met her when I was a teenager. So she encountered me with all of my insecurities and my hopes and my desires. So she really knows me, and I feel unbelievably safe.”

“Hard Medicine,” umc.tv/film/hard-medicine/ This mockumentary on the Urban Movie Channel stars Nicole Slaughter as a doctor in charge of a low-income health clinic who must make the difficult decision of letting go one member of her team due to corporate cutbacks. Melissa Eno Effa (who is also the series’ creator, writer and director), Ashley Narvaez, Rich Robertson and Celest Turner also star.

In the eyes of many college football prognosticators, the Pac-12 Conference is the USC Trojans’ to lose. That’s because they have a prostyle quarterback in sophomore Sam Darnold, who is already attracting the eye of NFL scouts as top draft pick in 2018, should he decide to got that route. Darnold and the Trojans will host a much-improved Texas Longhorns team Saturday, September 16 on Fox.
After red-shirting in 2015, Darnold entered last season as the backup on the Trojans’ quarterback depth chart. They started the season 1-2 and Darnold was named the starter in Week 4. USC lost to Utah 3127, but Darnold looked solid. A month later he began to hit his stride, and threw for five touchdowns each in back-to-back wins over Arizona and California and eventually guided the Trojans to their biggest victory of the season, when they upset then No. 4 ranked Washington Huskies. Darnold’s only loss last season was in that first start against Utah. Ironically, USC had beaten both Washington and Colorado, who played for the Pac-12 Championship. Darnold’s skills were showcased in USC’s 52-49 Rose Bowl victory over Penn, where he out-dueled the Nittany Lions Trace McSorley, completed 33 of 53 passes for 453 yards, with five touchdowns. Those last two numbers set new Rose Bowl records. USC has a few challenging games on their schedule, but should have things easier than their Northern Division counterparts. There’s a good possibility that, with Darnold under center, they could get back to the conference championship game and be a contender for the College Football Playoff.

stars in “Riviera” stars in “Riviera”

BY GEORGE DICKIE @ZAP2IT.COM
A young woman who married into money learns to her dismay exactly how that wealth was made in a stylish new thriller series premiering this week on the new streaming service Sundance Now.
In “Riviera,” which begins streaming Thursday, Sept. 14, Julia Stiles (“Blackway,” the “Bourne” movies) stars as Georgina Clios, a woman living a life of extreme luxury in the south of France as the new second wife of billionaire Constantine Clios (Anthony LaPaglia, “Without a Trace”) when he is suddenly killed in a yacht explosion. In addition to the shock of his death, Georgina’s world is thrown into further disarray when she learns the riches that support her uber-comfortable lifestyle were ill-gotten, the result of double-dealing, dishonesty and murder. Helped by an unlikely ally, Constantine’s first wife Irina (Lena Olin, “Chocolat”), Georgina must undergo a crash course in lying, theft and outright criminality if she is to maintain the Clios mansion and save the family from itself and its enemies.
And as it turns out, this former art student and dealer is a quick study.
“I felt like Georgina in the first few episodes, comes across maybe as guileless as the American amongst many savvy Europeans,” Stiles explains, “who had all this tragedy heaped on her and doesn’t know what to do with this change in her life. But I had the sense that she would prove to be more cunning and ultimately kind of ruthless, which the creators confirmed with me. I was curious about seeing that evolution and playing her through that change.”
For this, Stiles took a more active role in shaping the character and where the storyline was going.
“I made a conscious effort to keep talking to the producers and writers about how she did have to become more ruthless and more proactive and manipulative in some ways given the world that she’s in,” she says. “So about halfway through the season, I kept saying, ‘I think it’s really enjoyable and I think the audience will enjoy seeing her do that.’ And then ultimately, I think, that paid off, because I think the second half of the series is where it gets really good.”
Also enjoyable for Stiles was her character’s relationship with Olin’s.
“That was one of my favorite relationships in the show,” she says, “partially because I really liked working with Lena. But I found that that relationship is very surprising. When you think that it’s one thing, it changes. So on the surface, yeah they shared a husband so they’re easily adversaries and competitive with each other. Irina’s jockeying to maintain her stronghold on this household. And in some ways, Georgina is trying to defend her position and not being pushed out of this household.
“But what’s more important to them is there is this mutual respect,” she continues, “that they have for each other that kind of makes them frenemies or makes them friendly at times when they have the same interest. It’s weird. It’s a weird relationship.”
