Tall tales of the ‘Seven
Kingdoms’
: GOT prequel renewed before premiere
Nearly 15 years after “Game of Thrones” premiered on HBO, fans of the literary source material are (not so) patiently awaiting the sixth book in the would-be seven-book series. And although many seem to have given up hope that George R.R. Martin, the 77-year-old author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, will complete the series at all, there is still plenty of interest in the expansive world he has created to date.
The newest property in Martin’s television universe is “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” which premieres Sunday, Jan. 18, on HBO and HBO Max. A prequel to “Game of Thrones,” “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a.k.a. Dunk, a statuesque knight in Westeros during the reign of the Targaryen dynasty.
“A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros: a young, naive but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg,” reads the logline per Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO’s parent company. “Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
The leading role is filled by Irish actor Peter Claffey, who stands six feet five inches tall and who has previously starred in the Hulu horror series “Wreck,” Apple TV’s “Bad Sisters” and “Vikings: Valhalla” on Netflix, to name a few. Claffey, meanwhile, shares the bulk of his screen time with 11-year-old Dexter Sol Ansell (“The Midwich Cuckoos”) in the role of Egg, a bald-headed young boy whom Ser Duncan takes on as a squire throughout his travels.
The series is an adaptation of Martin’s 1998 novella “The Hedge Knight,” in which Dunk makes his transition from squire to knight following the death of his mentor Ser Arlan of Pennytree (Danny Webb, “Valkyrie,” 2008). Determined to do his chivalric teacher proud and prove himself worthy of the title of “Ser,” Dunk adopts Ser Arlan’s equipment as his own and travels to Ashford to complete the quest they had begun together — a tournament which would prove to be one of the most discussed upsets in the history of the Seven Kingdoms. Joining Claffey and Sol Ansell are Daniel Ings (“Lovesick”) as Ser Lyonel Baratheon; Bertie Carvel (“Dagliesh”) as Prince Baelor Targaryen; Sam Spruell (“Fargo”) as Prince Maekar Targaryen; Shaun Thomas (“Ladhood”) as Ser Raymun Fossoway; Finn Bennett (“True Detective”) as Prince Aerion Targaryen; Edward Ashley (“The Terror”) as Ser Steffon Fossoway; Tanzyn Crawford (“Tiny Beautiful Things”) as Tanselle; Henry Ashton (“Outlander”) as Prince Daeron Targaryen; Youssef Kerkour (“Home”) as Steely Pate; Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (“Say Nothing”) as Plummer; and Daniel Monks (“Kaos”) as Ser Manfred Dondarrion.
Premiering Sunday, Jan. 18, on HBO and HBO Max, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” has already been renewed for a second season with a third in discussion. Martin’s other HBO series, “House of the Dragon,” returns for a third season this summer.

“The Hillside Strangler” (Jan. 18)
In the late 1970s, Los Angeles was the serial murder capital of the world. But none terrorized this city of millions more than the Hillside Strangler, a phantom who struck without warning, murdering a dozen women and girls and leaving their bodies displayed on the hillsides like grim trophies. These crimes sparked the largest manhunt in LA’s blood-soaked history, led by a relentless homicide detective named Frank Salerno. His dogged pursuit led to the strangler’s capture and the revelation that these vicious acts were perpetrated by two men, Kenneth Bianchi and his cousin Angelo Buono.

Strings’ makes a romantic comedy fun classic corner
BY JAY BOBBIN
‘No
Though it was released just a few months before the very similarly themed “Friends With Benefits,” the 2011 romantic comedy “No Strings Attached” — which Paramount+ With Showtime offers on Wednesday, Jan. 21 — has plenty of good points of its own, one of the foremost being the typically dramatic Natalie Portman in a lighter turn. She’s quite good as a doctor who crosses paths again with a TV-industry worker (Ashton Kutcher) she met at summer camp when they were children. They agree to have a purely physical relationship, but that arrangement lasts only so long when he starts to fall for her, making her wary of forming an emotional attachment. In the next-to-last film he directed, Ivan Reitman (“Ghostbusters,” 1984) gathers an enjoyable cast that also includes Kevin Kline, Cary Elwes, later “Barbie” (2023) director Greta Gerwig, Lake Bell and actor-rapper Ludacris. Interestingly, this film also had the title “Friends With Benefits” originally, but it was changed because of the other movie’s claim to it.
“Playdate with Winnie the Pooh”Season 3, New Episodes (Jan. 18)
This Disney Junior animated series follows a young Pooh Bear as he enjoys playdates with his friends. Set in the exciting outdoors of the Hundred Acre Wood, these musical shorts emphasize collaborative play and the joy of spending time with others.
more retro rewinds
“Dennis the Menace” (Antenna TV, weekdays): Hank Ketcham’s popular comic strip inspired this comedy that ran from 1959 to 1963 on CBS, making a star of Jay North in the title role of a precocious youngster who means well in trying to help others ... but things don’t always work out that way. A frequent of his efforts is his perpetually cranky neighbor, “good old Mr. Wilson” (Joseph Kearns), whose wife (Sylvia Field) is much more tolerant of Dennis. Herbert Anderson and Gloria Henry play Dennis’s parents.
“Aliens” (FX, Thursday, Jan. 22): With this 1986 sequel, director James Cameron turned the original 1979 sci-fi thriller into a franchise that still continues with the FX series “Alien: Earth.” Sigourney Weaver reprises her role as astronaut Ellen Ripley, who is enlisted to go back to the planet where her former spaceship crew picked up a very unwelcome passenger. In her one major screen role, Carrie Henn plays a youngster found there and taken under Ripley’s wing, setting up an extremely memorable climactic battle. Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton also are featured.

Wolves, Warriors clash as playoff race tightens
It’s another high-stakes matchup in the National Basketball Association as Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves host Jimmy Butler and the Golden State Warriors in a Western Conference showdown Monday, Jan. 26, at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Tipoff airs live on Peacock.
At the heart of Minnesota’s success this season is none other than 24-year-old superstar Anthony Edwards. This season, Edwards continues to cement himself as one of the NBA’s premier scorers, averaging roughly 28.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.
Entering the match, the Timberwolves have already shown they can handle the Warriors this season, earning a decisive win in their previous matchup, 127-120, (at press time) and without their franchise player. Rudy Gobert and Julius Randle combined for an impressive 51 points, with Vincent DiVincenzo also contributing 21 points, highlighting a strong supporting cast on both ends of the floor and something the Warriors will need to limit — particularly in transition.
Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors have had quite the up-and-down season, blanketed by injuries and an overall Warriors team struggling to find much consistency in their game. While Jimmy Butler’s 19.8 points per game (at press time) has been a challenge for teams, against the Timberwolves they’ll need to limit turnovers and avoid defensive lapses when they can, something that has crippled the Warriors late in games this season. At press time, the Warriors are 5-11 in clutch games, while the Timberwolves are 11-5 at home.

“Back in the day, this is how it was, you rehearsed it and shot it in front of real people, and I love that. In the movies, ok maybe I make the crew bust up, but that’s it. Doing ‘Shifting Gears,’ I get to aim for the whole audience plus the crew. There’s nothing like it.”
- Tim Allen of “Shifting Gears” in an interview with USA Today.
Ben Affleck of “The Rip” on Netflix: He was a child actor on the PBS series “The Voyage of the Mimi” (and its sequel, “The Second Voyage of the Mimi”), then landed a primetime commercial-network role in the NBC drama “Against the Grain.”

“One of the things that we were all adamant about was we wanted, especially the core group [of actors], to be able to do the pages but be able to improvise. So live on set we would be doing what was written and then immediately starting to play with [it].” - Denis Leary of “Going Dutch” speaking with TheWrap.

“A lot of people can relate to Morgan. It’s nice to see a person who might seem very put together but be a bit of a mess. ...She doesn’t take herself too seriously. She doesn’t flaunt the fact that she’s smart. It’s disarming. She’s just doing whatever she can to make it work and make sure her kids are good. Once you have kids, nothing else really matters. If they’re happy, you’re happy. That might have something to do with it.” - Kaitlin Olson of “High Potential” in an interview with Esquire.
