Donald Glover stars in “Atlanta,” premiering Tuesday on FX.

Donald Glover goes back to ‘Atlanta’ in new FX series

I n honoring the area where he was raised, Donald Glover wants “Atlanta” to be unpredictable ... just like life.

The former “30 Rock” writer and “Community” co-star wears many hats including actor, writer and executive producer on the FX series that premieres with two episodes Tuesday, Sept. 6. He draws his other career as a rap artist – under the name Childish Gambino – into the saga of promising rapper Alfred (played by Brian Tyree Henry), who’s being guided by his manager cousin Earn (Glover).

Though the show is billed as a comedy, it can and does turn quickly toward dramatic and even violent content, and Glover doesn’t mind keeping viewers on their toes.

“There really isn’t a limit, I feel, to how abstract you can get as long as you believe it,” he reasons. “There has to be some sort of grounded nature to something so people don’t start being like, ‘I don’t believe this,’ and then they turn the channel. if you have something that is grounded on some level, you can go

anywhere. People want to go there with you if you do, but you just have to have it so people are like, ‘OK. They are guided by their own rules every step of the way.”’

Despite his own background in music, Glover determined early in developing “Atlanta” that he didn’t want to play the rap artist “because that would be weird. I wouldn’t have enjoyed that. It’s possible to do that, but then it actually makes it harder for me to do (the show). It just clouds a lot of things. I think it just wouldn’t be fun as much.

“If David Bowie made a show about him being a rock star, you could definitely watch it ... but then there’s some times you’d be, like, ‘Is this dude playing me a little bit? Like, what’s going on?’ There’s a level of magic realism and suspended disbelief that you need for all genres, and it’s important to me as an artist to keep those intact.”

Glover prides himself on using many Atlanta-area actors in the 10-episode first season that was filmed on location. Co-star Henry also

‘OUAT’:

was raised there, and he notes, “There are different worlds in Atlanta. The absurdity for one person is the reality for another, and we just take it as it is. And I think that’s what’s so special about that city, that it is always constantly growing and changing.

“Most people feel that they can’t go down there and learn anything from Atlanta,” adds Henry, “when I actually feel like Atlanta has so much more to teach every other major city. It’s the one little hub that I feel that allows other people to come in and bring what they want and also expand what we already have and already have discovered. And I just love that.”

As “Atlanta” weaves its own story, Glover hopes for viewers to get to know the city better “so when you come to Atlanta, hopefully, it will feel like people who watch this will sort of feel like they are on a ride ... like when you go to Universal Studios and you are, ‘I’m really in Hogwarts.’ I think if we are going to do that, let’s really show that. Let’s show both sides of that.”

Should we be on Captain Hook death watch?

It’s no secret that Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) has had a rough year on “Once Upon a Time.”

We didn’t stop to realize just how rough it was, however, until O’Donoghue brought up at San Diego Comic-Con how many times he’s died on the show.

Death No. 1 occurred back in Season 4, in the alternate reality where the heroes were the villains. His good buddy, Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) – or the evil version of him, that is – stabbed him in the back during a duel.

Next up was his Camelot death in Season 5, which turned him into a Dark One. And then came his third death, which sent everyone to the Underworld. That’s not even counting what could be considered death No. 4, when Emma (Jennifer Morrison) had to leave him in the Underworld instead of bringing him back to Storybrooke with her.

It stands to reason that we should probably keep a close eye on Hook during “Once Upon a Time’s” sixth season.

However, we’re reassured that, at least for now, Hook might catch a reprieve. Showrunners Adam Horowitz and Eddie Kitsis previously teased that Emma and Hook will be dealing with less complicated and dangerous obstacles this year. You know, like how to be a couple and which shows to binge on Netflix.

“Once Upon a Time” premieres Sept. 25 on ABC!

Duff travels the country on her stomach in ‘Haylie’s America’

Haylie Duff wears many hats: actress, producer, food blogger and mother of an active 1-year-old daughter. Now she adds to her resume host of her own foodie/travel series, Cooking Channel’s “Haylie’s America.”

Premiering Thursday, Sept. 8, the 30-minute program takes the 31-year-old Houston native to various locales around the country to visit with friends, explore local food scenes and go on adventures.

“It’s a mix of places that I love and wanted to share with people and places that I always have wanted to visit ...,” she explains. “One of the things I really love about this new series is that I’m kind of getting to share favorite cities and also explore places with the audience as well.”

Over eight episodes, the host of “The Real Girl’s Kitchen” samples gourmet ice cream in Denver with former “7th Heaven” co-star Beverley Mitchell, dines on poke burritos with actress Alanna Masterson (“The Walking Dead”), has a pre-concert “Coffee Talk” with Trisha Yearwood in Las Vegas and goes on an oyster excursion in New Orleans.

In Thursday’s series opener, she heads to Santa Barbara, Calif., with actor and fellow foodie Jonathan Bennett (“Cupcake Wars”) for an epic cheat day in which they devour beer-batter-andcheese-infused waffle sandwiches, smoked tri tip brisket and a triple chop sandwich and, of course, bake cupcakes.

“I did a chocolate and wine (cupcake) because I was trying to keep it a little classy,” Duff says. “And Jonathan, of course, his cupcakes were filled with bourbon because he’s never to be outdone, of course. We did a little ‘Cake Wars’-style competition.”

“I’m not really known for my baking skills,” she continues. “That’s one thing that I have always sort of shied away from, like I can never really follow directions – in the kitchen or in life in general – so

baking has never been my thing, my strong suit. So for me when the task is to bake them, I’m like, ‘Oh great.’ But I jumped into it because Jonathan put me up to the challenge, so I did pretty good. I’ll let you see the episode to see who wins the cupcake war.”

What book are you currently reading?

“Sad but true, when Ryan was first born, I was able to read so many books and then now the books I’m reading, it’s almost like I’m starting from the beginning. I’m reading ‘ABCs.’ I’m reading all the basics with Ryan. The last book I got to read for myself was ‘The Girl on the Train,’ which feels like a long time ago now. When you have a 1-yearold, your free time really isn’t so free anymore.”

What is your next project?

“I just started working on my book proposal, and hopefully the second season of ‘Haylie’s America.’ ”

What did you have for dinner last night?

“Airplane food. Isn’t that sad? I had a salad on the airplane. (Laughs)”

When was the last vacation you took, where and why?

“I have been traveling for the show, so that’s more like work. I guess the last vacation I took was last Christmas and New Year’s, and I went to Kauai with my family. I went with Matty (Rosenberg, her fiancé) and Ryan for New Year’s.”

As Katie Couric and many other celebrities continue their stand against cancer, they’re getting a big assist from Bradley Cooper.

The multiple Oscar nominee lost his father to the disease in 2011 and – much as current Yahoo global news anchor Couric did after it claimed her first husband, attorney Jay Monahan, and her Virginiasenator sister Emily – he’s channeling the loss into action as an executive producer of, and participant in, the fifth special to benefit the Couric-co-founded Stand Up to Cancer initiative. Airing Friday, Sept. 5, on approximately 50 networks in the U.S. and Canada simultaneously, the show combines performances with informational segments aimed at increasing financial support for medical research to find cures.

“When I think about what has been accomplished, not only the money we’ve raised but the paradigm shift this has helped accelerate, I am filled with such enormous pride and admiration for everyone in this community,” Couric says of those who have participated in the cancer-battling Entertainment Industry Foundation program. “This is the most important work I do, and I’m just so gratified to be a part of it and to play a role.”

‘Stand Up to Cancer’ again

Henry Winkler ‘BETTER

LATE THAN NEVER’ TUESDAY ON NBC

In the first episode of “Better Late Than Never,” you mentioned that doing the voice was how you were able to create the Fonz character for “Happy Days.” Is that true?

That is true, that once I changed my voice in the audition it unlocked me and I just said anything that came to my mind.

So at that point, you were the Fonz?

Katie Couric and many stars

The many other celebrities booked for this year’s special include Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, Anna Kendrick, Emma Stone, Josh Gad, “Modern Family’s” Eric Stonestreet, Alison Sweeney, Ken Jeong (“Dr. Ken”) and Niecy Nash. Celine Dion (who lost her manager husband Rene Angelil to throat cancer last January), Keith Urban and Little Big Town are slated to render songs. Cooper’s involvement this year is, Couric reasons, an example of “how effective star power can be in spreading the message and capturing people’s attention, and I think Bradley’s willingness and enthusiasm is the proverbial icing on the cake. We have been just thrilled to have the participation of so many people in the Hollywood community, and they have given so generously of their time and talent.

“I think that speaks to the fact that cancer does not discriminate,” adds Couric. “It affects everyone from all walks of life everywhere in the country and the world. This is personal for everyone.” Indeed, this year, people are invited to submit related photos and videos using the social-media hashtag Reasons2StandUp; some of the contributions will be shown on the telecast.

Though the Stand Up to Cancer specials – which have aired every two years since 2008 – are among its focal points, the campaign is a year-round effort that manifests itself in many ways. “I think it’s hard to miss the presence of Stand Up to Cancer,” Couric says, “whether you’re talking about the All-Star Game of Major League Baseball, or that MasterCard does a huge campaign for us, or that there are Stand Up to Cancer posters at airports and public-service announcements in magazines ... we are relentlessly on message 365 days a year, 24/7.”

Katie Couric of “Stand Up to Cancer” on multiple networks

“My workingdaughter’s on the set of ‘Mr. Robot,’ so I’ve got that in the queue, as they say. I’m also interested in watching the ‘Weiner,’documentary and I’ve been watching ‘Billions.’ I also love ‘Shameless,’ and I can’t wait for the new season of ‘The Affair.’ ”

I started to create him in the room at the audition for my wonderful, late, great (series creator) Garry Marshall. You know, Sir Laurence Olivier only could play a character once he found the nose. He would create and change his nose with makeup putty, and once he found the nose of the character it gave him enough of a key to start to create whatever the brilliance was he did.

The wardrobe helps a lot.

It helps a lot. There’s an old exercise from Commedia del’arte in the 15th century. You put on a piece of clothing or you put on a mask and you just stand in front of the mirror, you say not one word, and on its own your body starts to change and your posture changes and your shoulders move and all of a sudden a voice starts to come. You know, I did it at Yale in the drama school. That’s why I learned it. But it’s shockingly effective.

Did you use that with the Fonz at all with the black leather jacket? No, I just used the voice. Remember, I didn’t get the black leather jacket until the second year. I wore a cloth jacket because ABC thought I would be associated with crime.

Others in the “Happy Days” cast say Marshall encouraged them to branch out and take on roles other than acting. Did he do that with you? Yes, he did. He encouraged us in every way. He was my Don and I will still kiss his metaphorical ring.

Corey Stoll of “The Strain” on FX

“I don’t have cable. I watch everything through Netflix or HBO Go. ... I’m almost done watching the ‘O.J.: Made in America’ documentary on ESPN. That’s a really compelling and addictive show. I love ‘Archer,’ that and the John Oliver show. Those are probably my favorite shows right now.”

Curtis Stone, recently of “Moveable Feast With Fine Cooking” on PBS

“To be honest, I don’t watch a lot of television. I’m a USC fan, so I watch USC a fair bit. I watch the news and I watch a lot of ‘Sofia the First’ (laughs). Like I said, I’ve got two young kids so the little one’s into ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ and the other one is into ‘Sofia the First.’ ”

Pamela Adlon of “Better Things” on FX

“Anything that’s alternative, or a documentary series ... all the HBO documentaries. And I love ’The Americans’; I’m totally obsessed with it.”

The Denver Broncos would not have won Super Bowl 50 without linebacker Von Miller. The reigning Super Bowl champs and their Super Bowl MVP host a familiar opponent, the Carolina Panthers in the 2016 NFL season “kickoff” game that will be a Super Bowl rematch on Thursday, Sept. 8, on NBC.

While the Panthers and quarterback Cam Newton will seek to atone for their 24-10 Super Bowl embarrassment at the hands of Miller and the Broncos top-rated defense from 2015, Denver’s offense will have to sort out their quarterback situation for this game.

Back in June, Miller signed a new contract making him the highest paid defensive player ever in the NFL. Up to this point he’s done everything that’s been expected of him since he came into the league in 2011; a year in which he was honored as the defensive Rookie of the Year. He was taken as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft behind only Newton.

In Super Bowl 50, Miller ironically harassed Newton the entire game, earning 2.5 sacks off the mobile quarterback and forcing two fumbles; one of which resulted in an early touchdown. His efforts earned him the game MVP honors. The Broncos have built an aggressive defense around him which culminated in their Super Bowl victory.

In just five seasons Miller already has 60 sacks, and is the third fastest player to reach 50. A healthy career should place him among the all time sack leaders.

P A M E L A A D L O N PAMELA ADLON

Net Picks

After many years as a member of the Fox Broadcasting family, partially in voice-only roles, Pamela Adlon now has her eye set on “Better Things.”

The distinctively raspy “Louie” and “Californication” alum not only stars in the seriocomic FX series – premiering Thursday, Sept. 8 – but also is its co-creator (with Louis C.K.), frequent writer, sometimes director and an executive producer. Adlon plays Sam Fox, an actress and single mother who finds constant challenges in raising her three daughters (Mikey Madison, Hannah Alligood, Olivia Edward) and dealing with a neighbor who also happens to be her mother (Celia Imrie).

“I just feel like everything is funny in my life,” Adlon explains of her “Better Things” approach, “and there is a lot of funny in the darkness. I guess I like things that just feel real, and I don’t like anything that’s dark without a heart. I just feel like there’s really no category for this kind of thing. It’s not comedy or dramedy. It’s like ‘The Incredible Feelings Show.’ ”

An Emmy winner for her vocal work as Bobby Hill on the animated “King of the Hill,” Adlon also has lent her sound to many other cartoons including “Bob’s Burgers,” “WordGirl,” “Phineas and Ferb,” “Thundercats” and “Beavis and Butt-Head.” Though “Better Things” is semiautobiographical, she knows where to draw the line in terms of referencing others.

“I’m very aware of things that would be too personal,” she maintains, “and my daughters know that I wouldn’t co-op their lives. But my dad would always say, ‘Write what you know,’ and all my daughters are writers. I don’t walk into a room and go, ‘Wait. Hang on. I’ve got to go write what just happened’ ... although I do that with my mother. She walks into the kitchen, and I just get out a pen and go, ‘Go,’ because I know it’s just going to be material for me.”

Birthdate: July 9, 1966

Birthplace: New York

Current residences: New York and Los Angeles

Family info: Divorced; has three daughters

Movie work includes: “Conception,” “Lucky 13,” “Teacher’s Pet” (voice only), “Brother Bear” (voice only), “Recess: School’s Out” (voice only), “Sgt. Bilko,” “Bed of Roses,” “FernGully: The Last Rainforest” (voice only), “The Adventures of Ford Fairlane,” “Say Anything ... ,” “Grease 2”

Favorite movie: “It could be ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ it also could be ‘Stardust Memories,’ and it could be Ralph Bakshi’s ‘American Pop.’ And ‘A Woman Under the Influence.’ There’s a lot.”

Favorite television series you’re not on: “I love television. I’m a kid of television and I just feel like American filmmaking is not really trying the way television is. It took me a few years to make a new show, and one of those years was spent trying to catch up on ‘Breaking Bad,’ I was so obsessed with it. Television is important to me. It’s like occupational therapy.”

Favorite singer: “I love Slim Gaillard. He’s from the ‘40s, and I’m using a lot of his music in my show. As for current singers, I would have to say Pink and Beyonce. And in my house, we’re obsessed with Lou Reed and David Bowie and Robert Plant. And we love Billie Holiday and Jimmy Witherspoon.”

“StartUp,” www.crackle.com/startup/

Dropping Tuesday with 10 episodes, this drama stars Adam Brody (“The O.C.”), Edi Gathegi (“The Blacklist”) and Otmara Marrero (“Ballers”) as three unlikely partners in a digital currency developed on the wrong side of the tracks in Miami. Martin Freeman (“Sherlock,” “The Hobbit” trilogy) plays the FBI agent determined to bring them down.

“Sportology,” www.theonion.com/features/sportology

The news satire website The Onion comes forth with this four-part series that uses science to break down how different phenomena happen in sports. But being The Onion, don’t expect this to be a serious examination. The first episode, titled “How Do Archers Resist Firing Arrows at Everyone in the Spectator Gallery?,” should tell you all you need to know. LOL funny.

“Hikea,” www.youtube.com/channel/ UCkWetoOZZSi_215yzNPn4Gw

Anyone who has ever assembled a piece of Ikea furniture knows what an infuriating task it can be, even when sober, so why not try it while on drugs? That’s the premise of this new web series that will, according to its YouTube channel, “document the experiences of regular people — high on drugs like LSD or magic mushrooms — attempting to build well-priced furniture,” with each episode bringing in new people, drugs and kits. Yes, seriously.

“Bwitches,” www.youtube.com/channel/UCnOTdgQqpk2iOCQIbRC9XhA

Breaking the glass ceiling is hard but it’s a little easier when you have witchcraft on your side. That’s the conceit behind this comedy series created by Johanna Middleton and Martine Moore, who star as 20-something Los Angeles roommates who use their special powers to rise above their menial show business jobs and climb the corporate ladder.

Best Bets

SUNDAY

6 p.m. on KTUL

The ABC Fall Preview Special

This look at the network’s lineup for the new season splits the hosting duties between stars of returning shows and some of those featured in debuting series. Anthony Anderson (“blackish”) and Randall Park (“Fresh Off the Boat”) represent those who will start new seasons, while Katy Mixon (“American Housewife”), John Ross Bowie (“Speechless”) and Piper Perabo and Daniel Sunjata (“Notorious”) help introduce their soon-to-premiere programs.

8 p.m. on STARZ Power

Angela and Mike (Lela Rochon, David Fumero) are under more pressure as the hunt for the mole intensifies in the new “Trust Me.”

Tasha (Naturi Naughton) gets a warning from a frightening visitor, while Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) makes a new friend who may prove to be very dangerous. Ghost (Omari Hardwick), meanwhile, follows a lead that prompts him to start wondering whom he can trust.

9 p.m. on TNT Murder in the First

This season has been fraught with all kinds of personal drama for Terry and Hildy (Taye Diggs, Kathleen Robertson), especially in terms of their personal relationship, but they’re all business — well, mostly — in the Season 3 finale as they race to close one of their most challenging cases. Complicating things is a grisly new murder that hits close to home for them. Elsewhere, Siletti (Currie Graham) learns that his court victory comes at a very stiff price.

MONDAY

7 p.m. on DISC Fast N’ Loud

After last week’s preview special, the new season gets properly under way in a special, slightly early time slot as host Aaron Kaufman restores a vintage Harley-Davidson bike to mark the premiere of the three-night limited series “Harley and the Davidsons,” which by a remarkable coincidence just happens to start immediately following this new episode.

8 p.m. on DISC Harley and the Davidsons

This new three-part docudrama chronicles how three men — brothers Walter and Arthur Davidson (Michiel Huisman, “Game of Thrones,” and Bug Hall, “Revolution”) and Bill Harley (Robert Aramayo, “Game of Thrones”) — developed their iconic bike just after the turn of the 20th century. In the premiere, “Amazing Machine,” Walter risks his life to put their new company on the map, racing against a powerful rival, Indian Motorcycles. Tommy Bastow, Alex Felton and Annie Read also star.

8 p.m. on HIST 15 Septembers Later

Interviews with President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and other key figures from that fateful day provide a new perspective on the 9/11 terrorist attacks, as examined through the prism of the last 15 years in this new two-hour documentary. The day’s events are seen anew through the lens of recently declassified documents, photographs and other information.

8 p.m. on TNT Rizzoli & Isles

A series of crime novels by Tess Gerritsen may have been the initial inspiration for this female buddy series, but make no mistake, it was the sharp chemistry between stars Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander that has kept this program near the top of TV’s scripted dramas for seven seasons. As the show wraps up its run with a finale called “Ocean Frank,” the story nominally deals with a dead man found handcuffed to his own bed, but much of the episode deals with the themes of farewells and fresh beginnings.

TUESDAY

8 p.m. on KOTV Zoo

The suspense drama’s secondseason finale, “Pangaea/Clementine,” might make it seem that the animal uprising is on the verge of ending — but don’t be too sure, since the series has been renewed for Season 3 next summer. Mitch and Jamie (Billy Burke, Kristen Connolly) come up with an idea to terminate the Noah Objective, then they gather with Jackson (James Wolk) and the others on an island to finalize the cure ... supposedly. Nonso Anozie also stars.

8 p.m. on KOED Frontline

“The Man Who Knew” offers a different take on the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The focus is on John O’Neill, the former chief of the FBI’s New York antiterrorism unit, who left the agency just weeks before the terrorist attacks. Ironically, he became the head of security at the World Trade Center, where he died while trying to help others after the two airplanes crashed into the Twin Towers.

8 p.m. on DISC Harley and the Davidsons Walter and Bill (Michiel Huisman, Robert Aramayo) convince Arthur (Bug Hall) that their business will survive only if they rejoin the racing community in the new episode “Race to the Top.” Unfortunately, they become so focused on that goal that they leave themselves open to an unforeseen but devastating threat.

9 p.m. on OWN Queen Sugar

This new drama series follows the three estranged siblings of the Bordelon family — journalist and activist Nova (Rutina Wesley, “True Blood”), “basketball wife” Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner, “Unforgettable”) and young father Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe, “Awkward”) — as they reunite to save their family’s failing sugar cane farm in Louisiana. “Selma” director Ava DuVernay helmed the series premiere, “First Things First,” which OWN is airing without commercials. Another new episode airs Wednesday.

9 p.m. on FX Atlanta

On the NBC sitcom “Community,” Donald Glover’s sweetly befuddled nerd Troy was a fan favorite, but this edgy new comedy series — on which he is executive producer, writer and cast member — is a decidedly darker affair. The series, filmed on location in the Georgia capital, follows Alfred (Brian Tyree Henry), an aspiring rapper, who relies on his manager and cousin Earn (Glover) for guidance. LaKeith Stanfield and Zazie Beetz also star in tonight’s two back-to-back premiere episodes.

WEDNESDAY

7 p.m. on KQCW Penn & Teller: Fool Us

A certain drink is bound to be involved at some point of the new episode “To Tea or Not to Tea?” — and you can bet it will have a different use than its usual one, based on the nature of this show. Whatever it’s involved in, if Penn & Teller are stumped by it, those responsible will land a spot in their Las Vegas show. The contenders for that reward here are Timon, Kyle Marlett, The Evasons and Chef Anton. Alyson Hannigan is the host.

8 p.m. on KOTV American Gothic Another victim will be claimed — specifically, one of the Hawthornes — before Election Day is over in the drama’s two-hour season finale, “Madame X/Whistler’s Mother.” The family hopes the police can keep them protected, but Garrett (Antony Starr) turns out to be the key. Alison (Juliet Rylance) tries to stay focused on her mayoral bid, but a suddenly resurfaced friend poses another distraction. Guest stars include Bethany Joy Lenz (“One Tree Hill”).

8 p.m. on DISC Harley and the Davidsons The miniseries finale, “Legacy,” finds the Great Depression raging through America and crippling the motorcycle industry. Even though the Harley-Davidson firm itself is teetering on the brink of ruin, its main partners decide to fly in the face of conventional wisdom and embark on their most ambitious and expensive design yet, a machine that firmly will establish them as the greatest motorcycle builders in America. Michiel Huisman and Bug Hall star.

9 p.m. on FX Tyrant

Barry and Molly (Adam Rayner, Jennifer Finnigan) are on the brink of war with the Caliphate in a season finale with the ominous title “Two Graves.” Barry also faces a final reckoning in his relationship with Daliyah (Melia Kreiling), while Leila (Moran Atias) makes a bold political move. As the episode builds to its climax, the conflict in Abuddin threatens to turn into a bloody, full-fledged civil war.

THURSDAY

7 p.m. on KOTV

The Big Bang Theory

The decision to pursue a patent for their gyroscope sets up trouble when Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) holds back on being bound legally to Sheldon and Leonard (Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki) in “The Application Deterioration.” The result is a conversation that’s uncomfortable for all concerned. Unsure what to do when ex-flame Emily (Laura Spencer) contacts him. Raj (Kunal Nayyar) gets advice from Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and others.

7:31 p.m. on KOTV Life in Pieces

“Cinderella Fantasy Prom Dougie” plays into college basketball’s March Madness — when the episode originally was shown — as Tim (Dan Bakkedahl) is convinced that wearing a Cinderella dress is a good omen for his alma mater in the tournament. Greg (Colin Hanks) ponders whether to say what he really thinks in signing his boss’ birthday card. As a prom approaches for Tyler (Niall Cunningham), others at home weigh in with their thoughts about the occasion.

8 p.m. on KQCW

Beauty and the Beast

Vincent (Jay Ryan) may not manage to avoid showing his true colors — and true beast — when he’s secretly subjected to an interrogation in the new episode “No Way Out.” If he ends up being unable to control his instincts, his future with Cat (Kristin Kreuk) could be all but doomed. Austin Basis, Nicole Gale Anderson, Nina Lisandrello and Michael Roark also star.

9 p.m. on FX Better Things

Fearless actress Pamela Adlon (“Californication”) has served previously as an informal comedy muse for Louis C.K., and the pair cocreated this typically bold new comedy series. The premiere, “Sam/ Pilot,” introduces the audience to outspoken actress and single mom Sam Fox (Adlon), who goes through life without a filter while raising her three daughters (Mikey Madison, Hannah Alligood, Olivia Edward). Celia Imrie co-stars as Sam’s mother, an expatriate who lives across the street.

FRIDAY

7 p.m. on KJRH KOKI KOTV KTUL

Stand Up to Cancer

The fifth of the bi-annual specials — airing across many networks simultaneously, and showcasing the entertainment community’s efforts to raise funds for continued research into cures for the disease — counts Bradley Cooper among its executive producers. His personal connection is bound to factor into the hour, as are those of initiative co-founder Katie Couric and many other familiar faces. Performances and informational segments are interwoven.

8 p.m. on KOTV 10th Annual ACM Honors

Though this event has existed for a decade, it’s being televised for the first time, focusing on those who received special honors and off-camera accolades in last April’s 51st Academy of Country Music Awards. The members of Lady Antebellum serve as hosts at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, with Glen Campbell, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Crystal Gayle and Little Big Town among those celebrated. Urban also is a performer here, as are Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean.

9:30 p.m. on KOED

David Holt’s State of Music

In “Episode 2” of the new interview program showcasing musicians, acoustic guitarist and mandolin and banjo player Bryan Sutton and singer, violinist and banjo player Rhiannon Giddens of the country-and-blues-flavored Carolina Chocolate Drops are showcased by Grammy-winning host Holt, who also joins them musically. The tunes are framed against images of the southern countryside that inspired the songs’ creation.

SATURDAY

7 p.m. on LIFE Movie: Girl in the Box

It may sound like the premise of a particularly dire Lifetime womanin-distress thriller, but most of the events depicted in this new TV docudrama are based on fact.

Addison Timlin (“The Awkward Moment”) stars as Colleen Stan, 22, who is picked up while hitchhiking in 1977 by a couple (Zane Holtz, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” and Zelda Williams, “Dead of Summer”). Thus begins seven years as a sex slave for Colleen, who is forced to spend up to 23 hours a day in a coffin-sized box under the couple’s bed.

The season finale, “I Will,” follows immediately. 10 p.m. on COM Jeff Ross Roasts Cops Jeff Ross is a comedy veteran who isn’t afraid to push even the hottest of hot-button issues. In this new special, which is a follow-up to a program last year in which he performed for Texas prison inmates, Ross incorporates the same kind of insult comedy that has stood him in good stead on so many Comedy Central roasts as he addresses controversial topics such as racial profiling and use of excessive force, while also noting the myriad risks police officers face each day.

Late Night with Seth Meyers

Happy birthday to President Obama who turned 55 today! He made a wish and blew out the candles, but then when he opened his eyes, he was still president. A Fox News national poll found that people prefer Hillary Clinton to Donald Trump by 10 points. While an MSNBC poll found that Hillary Clinton has already been president for two years.

Donald Trump yesterday met with RNC officials who reportedly grew so angry with Trump during the meeting that they yelled at him, “Do you realize how badly you’re screwing this up?” Said Trump, “The best? I’m screwing it up the best, right?”

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Tomorrow night is the official start of the Rio Summer Olympics, which is when the entire world will come together for one reason: making fun of the outfits athletes wear at the opening ceremonies. The golf tournament at the Rio Olympics will be played on a course that is apparently infested with 150-pound rodents. The official said, “Don’t worry, the giant snakes will eat them. So don’t worry about them. Golf

away, enjoy yourself.”

A new survey finds that Hillary Clinton has more support in the marijuana industry than Donald Trump. Or in other words, Hillary Clinton will definitely win the vote of people who won’t remember to vote.

The Late Show With

Stephen Colbert

It looks like all the controversies are taking their toll, with reports that Trump’s campaign staff feel like they are wasting their time and that Trump’s staff is suicidal. They’d jump off the building, but they’re afraid they’d see the word “Trump” on the way down. Trump and his party raised $82 million last month, much of it from small donations, with supporters pitching in $10 to $25 apiece. And they can feel good knowing that every dollar will help Donald Trump reach his ultimate goal — attack ads against Paul Ryan.

The Late Late Show With James Corden

Apparently, the conditions in Rio are so bad that the U.S. basketball team has opted against staying in the Olympic village dorms, and is instead staying on a cruise ship that they’ve docked in the harbor. Now, I understand not wanting to stay in the Olympic village, but why would you switch to a cruise ship? You basically traded a diarrhea city for a floating diarrhea city.

Jimmy Kimmel Live

You know, there have been major electrical and plumbing issues in Rio. One athlete from Kenya wrote, “Please fix my toilet” on a bulletin board in the Olympic village. And you know, when someone who lives in Kenya’s complaining about your plumbing, I think that’s what they refer to as a wake-up call.

President Obama
