Kaley Cuoco in “Charmed”

Recalling Kaley Cuoco’s “Charmed”

existence

What turned out to be the final season of “Charmed” added someone to the cast who would become an even bigger star on another show soon after ward: Kaley Cuoco. TNT r uns the eighth-and-last-season premiere episode of the sibling-witch saga (titled “Still Charmed & Kicking”) Friday, Sept. 29, with Phoebe, Piper and Paige (played by Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs and Rose McGowan) presumed to be deceased … which is not the case.

They hope that being free of any expectations from others will allow them to reboot their lives, but that wish crumbles fairly quickly, as Paige has to help another sorceress (Cuoco) who has gotten herself into trouble while on a quest to locate her own missing sister Though she only was in the concluding year of this series, Cuoco wouldn’t be out of work very long, relatively speaking, since “ The Big Bang Theor y” started a year later

ome investigators just have the knack when it comes to seeing missing piece in confounding investigations.

The Irrational,” a brand-new crime procedural premiering onday, Sept. 25, on NBC, Prof. Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin, Flash”) is pulled from the world of academia to lend his sought-after expertise to virtually unsolvable cases.

The Irrational” is based on the popular book “Predictably rrational” by author Dan Ariely, about the theories behind decision-making and rational thought. The series drops Mercer into investigations in dire need of a fresh perspective. With law enforcement and investigators at a loss for tying suspects and moto shocking crimes, the professor joins the team to lead them his unique path of discovery

its series description, NBC notes that Mercer’s “insight and unconventional approach to understanding human behavior lead and the team on a series of intense, unexpected journeys to illogical puzzles and perplexing mysteries.”

the official trailer for the series, Mercer is seen very much at at the front of a lecture hall, teaching one of his psychology courses before he meets a little bit of resistance when he encounters law enforcement. An investigator asks him if he’s the science guy,” leading Mercer to quip, “That’s Bill Nye. I’m actuthe behavioral sciences guy.” His sense of humor shows itself when his theoretical approaches are gently questioned before emarks, “Gravity was just a theory at one point.”

What are the methods behind Mercer’s breakthrough analysis of high-profile, dead-end cases? Well, the trailer gives a glimpse the theories he uses to shed light on where investigative trails gone cold. Mercer shoots off a few choice $10 phrases like edictable irrationality,” “paradoxical persuasion,” “attentional blindness” and “bereavement sex” as some of the things knocking around his head as he takes a new look at tough cases.

While Mercer is increasingly pulled away from his academic as he successfully aids federal investigations, he does make to keep two of his best and brightest graduate students loop. Molly Kunz (“Chicago Fire”) stars as Phoebe, a protégé of Mercer’s who enthusiastically follows in her profesfootsteps, both literally and figuratively. Arash DeMaxi artner Track”) is Owen, another one of Mercer’s students gets pulled into his new side gig. new series also stars Maahra Hill (“Delilah”) as FBI agent arisa, Mercer’s main contact and partner in these investigations. ravina Springer (“Ms. Marvel”) is Kylie, Mercer’s sister and curoommate. While the pair are close siblings, Kylie is more of spirit than Mercer, who uses his own creativity to shake up bureaucracies. Soma Chhaya (“The Breadwinner,” 2017) stars as Jasmine and Ella Cannon (“iZombie”) is Lila.

“The Irrational” debuts following the singing competition series “The Voice” on NBC and joins the new series “Found,” the network’s second new original series premiering this fall. Another procedural, “Found” follows a crisis management team that focuses on finding missing people. With most networks relying on non-scripted series amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, NBC’s new scripted dramas will be some of the fall’s lone non-competition or reality offerings.

more retro rewinds

“Up” (Freeform, Tuesday, Sept. 26): One of the most heartfelt Disney-Pixar animated attractions, this 2009 feature makes excellent use of Ed Asner’s distinctive voice, speaking the words of a senior-citizen widower trying to fulfill a promise he made to his late wife. He hooks many helium balloons onto his house, making it an airborne vehicle – with an extra passenger aboard, a youngster (voice of Jordan Nagai) trying to earn a scout badge for helping elderly people. Christopher Plummer also is heard.

“A Christmas Story” (Turner Classic Movies, Friday, Sept. 29): It’s unusual to see this 1983 favorite of many viewers this far ahead of the yuletide, but it’s part of a “Remembering Childhood” theme evening here. Of course, the principal child in question is Ralphie (Peter Billingsley), writer Jean Shepherd’s surrogate who wants nothing more than to receive a Red Ryder air rifle as a holiday gift – which earns him the warning from almost everyone around him, “You’ll shoot your eye out!”

Ramsay reclaims fall: ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ returns for Season 8

Superstar chef Gordon Ramsay is adding an old-favorite dish to Fox’s fall menu as “Kitchen Nightmares” returns with its highly anticipated eighth season after a decade-long hiatus. New episodes premiere Monday, Sept. 25, on Fox.

The network is no stranger to Ramsay’s distinct –now practically trademarked – in-your-face, abrupt and (sometimes) devastatingly honest critiques, as Fox is currently home to four other shows hosted by the celebrity chef: “Next Level Chef,” “MasterChef,” “MasterChef Jr.” and “Hell’s Kitchen,” which is slated to return with its 22nd season – dubbed “Hell’s Kitchen: American Dream” – on Thursday, Sept. 28 (also on Fox).

His most popular (and perhaps most quoted) series – “Kitchen Nightmares” – first aired in the U.K. as “Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares” before making its debut on Fox in 2007. The series ran for nearly 100 episodes before concluding in 2014, much to viewers’ dismay.

Later, in 2017, Ramsay told the Daily News: “Yes, it was wrong to pull my own show off air. ... The biggest demand over the last four years is for ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ (to come back).” Hungry fans have been waiting since then for word of the show’s potential return.

Now, with Season 8 around the corner, Fox has shared an updated synopsis for the series: “Chef Gordon Ramsay hits the road to help struggling restaurants all over the United States turn their luck around. Ramsay examines the problems each establishment faces, from unsanitary refrigerators to lazy or inexperienced staff, and searches for resolutions. With help from his team, Ramsay redecorates each eatery to give it a fresh new look and updates the menu as needed. Ramsay’s ultimate goal is to make the restaurants he visits popular and profitable, but it’s up to the restaurateurs to take

bestof ...

Nightmares”

his advice and turn their business nightmare into the American dream.”

In each episode, Ramsay gives himself, restaurant owners and the rest of their team one week to turn their failing restaurant into spick-and-span, neatly operating (and with any luck, delicious) businesses.

Originally produced by ITV Studios (now known as ITV America), the series will now be produced by Gordon’s very own Studio Ramsay Global – and the more Gordon Ramsay, the better. With more insults, code violations and stomach-churning dishes, “Kitchen Nightmares” returns to Fox, Monday, Sept. 25.

BEST FRANK SINATRA MOVIES

“On the Town” (1949): Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Jules Munshin live it up energetically as sailors who pack in all the fun they can while on a 24-hour leave in New York.

“Suddenly” (1954): In this intense melodrama, Sinatra plays a captor of a family as he invades their home and waits to assassinate the U.S. president.

“The Tender Trap” (1955):

A major highlight of this romantic comedy is the opening, in which Sinatra shows off the wide screen by walking toward the camera singing the title song.

“Pal Joey” (1957): Sinatra has the title role in the Rodgers and Hart musical about a singing womanizer whose deepening affection for a chorus member (Kim Novak) doesn’t keep him from tr ying to use a former flame (Rita Hayworth).

“The Joker Is Wild” (1957): Sinatra is terrific in the true stor y of comedian Joe E. Lewis, who incurred the wrath of mobsters in a drastic way

“Ocean’s Eleven” (1960): This popular casino-heist caper, the first of Sinatra’s “Rat Pack” movies with such pals as Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., was reborn as a franchise for George Clooney and company four decades later

“Robin and the 7 Hoods” (1964): Sinatra introduced his song standard “My Kind of Town” in this highly entertaining gangster spoof featuring much of the “Rat Pack,” plus Bing Crosby and Peter Falk.

“Von Ryan’s Express” (1965): This excellent militar y drama casts Sinatra as a prisoner of war who engineers an escape for many of his fellow captives. Turner Classic Movies shows the film Monday, Sept. 25.

“Assault on a Queen” (1966): Rod Serling wrote the screenplay for this crime caper, with Sinatra playing the leader of a gang planning to rob the Queen Mar y ocean liner.

“Tony Rome” (1967): Sinatra is suited ideally to the title role of a laid-back Miami private eye who becomes entangled with a wealthy, troubled family. A sequel, “Lady in Cement,” was released a year later
