Twenty years after Candice Bergen’s multiple-Emmy-winning run as the ever-caustic journalist supposedly ended, “Murphy Brown” is back as a CBS revival premieres Thursday, Sept. 27. Creator and executive producer Diane English also is among the returnees – as are original co-stars Grant Shaud (as Murphy’s now-former “FYI” producer Miles Silverberg), Faith Ford (pageant winner turned reporter Corky Sherwood) and Joe Regalbuto (investigative reporter Frank Fontana).

With such current topics as the MeToo movement on the show’s plate, English says, “We kind of toyed with the idea” of doing “Murphy Brown” again “when Sarah Palin was running for vice president. We thought we only had six episodes (of material), but it wasn’t a serious consideration at all.

“Then we had an election (in 2016), and (Warner Bros. Television chief ) Peter Roth came to us and said, ‘Would you consider bringing the show back?’ Candice and I were kind of reluctant, because we felt we had done it. But as the months ticked by, it started to feel like we had maybe a real reason to come back and Peter said, ‘What if I pay you to write a script?’ And that got my attention.”

It also got Bergen’s, though English didn’t show her the script for nine months. Then, the actress recalls, “I said, ‘Let’s do it.’ It’s been very emotional for the old guys. We moved the show to New York, because I have to be in New York for other reasons. They built Murphy’s townhouse on the soundstage in the studio in Queens, and (when we saw it) for the first time, we all got tears in our eyes because it was just a lot. ‘Murphy’ was so important to all of us, so to be back, we’re just grateful.”

‘Hawaii Five-0’ is still on the case

Were you a fan of the original version of “Magnum P.I.”?

I used to watch it as a kid, yeah. I was a big fan of it. I watched “Magnum, p.i.” (as the first series’ title was spelled) and “Hawaii Five-O.” I watched both those shows.

Have you spoken with original “Magnum” Tom Selleck?

I have not heard from Tom. I know Peter’s (reboot executive producer Lenkov) talked to him and the conversation went really well. He gave us his blessing, so I know he’s going to watch.

How is it to drive one of the cars that are such staples of the franchise?

It’s so much fun. They’re so power ful. And there’s also that sor t of the mystique surrounding the red Ferraris. It’s something that people of a cer tain age understand; it was just, like, the height of the ‘80s. It was kind of magical, right? I feel like without Tom Selleck and “Magnum, p.i.” in general, red Ferraris wouldn’t be a thing necessarily It kind of like built the brand in a way that they couldn’t do by commercials or even probably winning races.

It’s pretty special. It’s a unique thing. The cars are just amazing to drive. You have to sor t

of be cautious of the power, because there’ so much horsepower just readily available. That being said, I hope we get a lot more oppor tunities to drive the Ferraris.

Is there extra caution taken with those cars during filming because they’re costly, too?

Q: I have not noticed any promotions for “Hawaii Five-0” for the coming season. Has it been canceled?

– Sue Alderman, Niles, Ohio

A: Far from it. The Alex O’Loughlin-starring CBS reboot of the police drama starts its ninth season in its traditional Friday slot Sept. 28. In fact, that night’s entire lineup on the network remains as it’s been the past two years, with “MacGyver” starting the evening and “Blue Bloods” ending it.

One thing you can expect at some point is a crossover stor y that links “Five-0” to another CBS revival for the new season, “Magnum P.I.” Not only do the two shows share a genre and Hawaiian filming locations, they also have some of the same production personnel, particularly executive producer Peter M. Lenkov (who developed both series for their present-day incarnations).

Q: When will “Star Trek: Discovery” be back? – Peter Gill, via e-mail

Which is fascinating. I’m ver y thankful for this, because Peter said he’s gifting me the Ferrari after the first season.

Questions:

A: As this was being written, an exact Season 2 premiere date had yet to be set, though CBS All Access was saying “early 2019.” When the show does return, it will have a ver y significant addition to its roster of characters ... the one and only Spock, to be played by Ethan Peck, grandson of the legendar y actor-producer Gregor y Peck.

The show’s new round also will see another character iconic in “Star Trek” histor y come aboard: Captain Christopher Pike, commander of the starship Enterprise before James Kirk. That role will be assumed by “Hell on Wheels” alum Anson Mount. The first season of “Star Trek: Discover y” – most of which will be new to those who don’t subscribe to CBS All Access (except possibly for the pilot, which also was broadcast on the parent CBS) – will be available on home video Nov 13.

An undocumented immigrant does good in Season 5 of Netflix’s ‘Chef

’s Table’

With immigration reform and border security at the forefront of the national conversation these days, a new “Chef ’s Table” episode about an undocumented Mexican chef and her successful South Philadelphia restaurant seems particularly relevant.

Dropping Friday, Sept. 28, on Netflix, as one of four Season 5 episodes, the installment about Cristina Martinez, owner of South Philadelphia’s El Compadre, is an example of Latino ingenuity and grit at its best.

Arriving in the city a little over a decade ago, the middle-aged Martinez didn’t have the funds to open up her own restaurant so she started by preparing and selling food out of her apartment. Her cuisine became so popular that she was able to open up a food cart and eventually her own eatery.

CBS certainly knows how to do crime procedurals, as does “Law & Order” mentor Dick Wolf, so this new teaming seems like a match made in series heaven. “L&O” veteran Jeremy Sisto and ’Rookie Blue” alum Missy Peregrym return to well, law and order as New York-based federal agents trying to protect a city and country facing modern threats from every angle. Interestingly, this was conceived as an “L&O” spinoff series, but NBC passed on it. Sela Ward joins the show in Episode 2. 9:01 p.m. on KJRH New Amsterdam

Just because an actor is “killed off” a show doesn’t mean he can’t resurface in another, as “The Blacklist” alum Ryan Eggold proves by assuming the lead in this new drama. He plays the medical director of the title hospital — based on the famous Bellevue facility — and as he assumes the job, he challenges conventional thinking about delivering the best-possible patient care despite gaps in staffing and funding.

Henson, Terrence Howard) still haven’t finished picking up the pieces as this musical drama opens its fifth season with “Steal From the Thief.” A promising new singer and rapper named Treasure (guest star Kaitlyn Simone) may hold the key to reversing the Lyons family fortunes, however. The nostalgic sitcom opens Season 6 with “Sixteen Candles,” a tip of the hat to John Hughes’ beloved and iconic 1984 Molly Ringwald movie comedy of that title. It’s easy to describe this new drama as a “Big Chill” for today — and also reasonably accurate. Now that Allison Janney has become a force to reckon with in films, thanks to her recent Oscar win for “I, Tonya,” is Season 6 destined to be the last for this acclaimed Chuck Lorre sitcom? There’s some buzz to that effect, although no official announcement. Another lesson in never saying “never,” the Tim Allen sitcom — which has remained popular in syndication after ABC canceled it — switches networks for its revival, with much of the original cast intact (though Molly McCook is the new “Mandy”). Consider the continuing misadventures of Outdoor Man staple Mike Baxter and his family a testament to the staying power of Allen, who was quite vocally displeased with the cancellation. Nancy Travis and Amanda Fuller also are among the returnees.

This CBS reboot of a vintage ABC action series rattled its fans in the Season 2 finale by having its title character (Lucas Till) walk away from his work with the Phoenix Foundation, largely owing to a family conflict with his dad (guest star Tate Donovan). The Season 3 premiere, “Improvise,” picks up the action three months later, as Mac is forced to set aside those father-son tensions and return to Phoenix after his buddy Jack (George Eads) is targeted by a murderous dictator.
