Craft shoppers can meet old and new friends at Fin and Feather’s Fall Festival.
The Lake Tenkiller area resort has hosted thousands of shoppers and craftspeople since its festival began in 1969.
The 48th annual festival runs Friday through Sunday.
Debbie Mertz of southeast Kansas said she has brought her personalized wooden holiday ornaments to Fin and Feather for more than 30 years.
“Our customers are our friends now. We know them when they come up,” she said. “We have people who come up by my booth and, they’re so good to us, they’ve been there so many years and they buy our family ornaments. They’ll have a list. They may have a list of 20 that they need. I will get busy on that list, and they’ll shop. It’s the repeat business that keeps us going.”
WHAT: Fin and Feather Fall Festival.
WHEN: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
WHERE: Fin and Feather Resort, 445889 Oklahoma 10A, Gore.
Mertz said Fin and Feather is their favorite craft event.
“It’s a beautiful setting. The people who run it are just like family,” she said. “It’s just a good start to our show season. We like the location.”
The resort’s location, a wooded Lake Tenkiller overlook, lets visitors view nature’s handiwork. Early autumn leaves show their first hints at warmer shades.
Mertz said she cannot count how many people she sees.
“It’s a good crowd,” she said. “They

adapted play tackles age old question of nature vs. nurture

By Travis Sloat Phoenix Correspondent
Nature vs. nurture might be called into question at the Muskogee Little Theatre, but one thing the entire cast agrees on is the star power of the 11-year-old lead — Addyson Bracken.
MLT’s production of “The Bad Seed” features Bracken as Rhoda Penmark, a young girl who is — to put it mildly — dealing with a few psychological issues.
Pam White, who plays Monica Breedlove, said Bracken was destined for great things.
“This is my second production, and I’m having a blast,” White said. “It is the most fun show; people are going to think it’s fun. The cast is awesome, and a star is being born in little Addyson. She’s great.”
important,” Wagner said. “I want them to be doing things. We’ve developed these archetype characters that the audience will relate to. I wanted to bring that out here and make it more interesting to watch.”
Wagner also touted the talents of Sterling Spinks, the technical director, and Bracken.
“She’s so talented,” Wagner said. “She’s a natural. It’s been a totally different experience for me. It’s a 1950s play, believe it or not, the movie won Academy Awards. There’s kind of a cult following for this play, and people look for certain things to happen.”
“This is really huge for me ... I really want to become a famous actress because I love acting. It’s one of my favorite things to do.”
– Addyson Bracken
“The Bad Seed” was written in 1954 by William March, and was subsequently adapted into a Broadway play by Maxwell Anderson. A film adaptation was released in 1956.
“The Bad Seed” will open at 8 p.m. Friday at MLT. It will be performed again at 8 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28 and 8 p.m. Sept. 29 and 30. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students, and can be purchased online at muskogeelittletheatre.com or in person at the MLT Box Office one hour before curtain.
The play is directed by Chrissie Wagner, who said it is the first dramatic play she’s undertaken after heading up several musicals.
“I’m used to the dancing and the singing, so blocking here is
Bracken, a fifth grader at Fort Gibson Intermediate Elementary, couldn’t contain her excitement when asked about her role.
“Well, I’m basically a murderer,” Bracken said, giggling. “I act kind of innocent and sweet to get away with things. I’m a little nervous, because I’ve never been a lead before. My favorite parts have been meeting everyone here and how the set is turning out. It’s been so much fun.”
Bracken, who said she was “literally crying” when she found out she got the part, said this production is the springboard for

get there early. We are in a building, and they open the buildings at 9 o’clock, and there are people waiting to come in.”
Festival coordinator Lezli Pool said 170 vendors are expected this year. Crafts include woodwork, clothing, personalized signs, quilts, candles, seasonal items, and homemade soap. Food vendors include roasted corn on the cob, prime brisket, pork rinds and cheesecake on a stick.
Pool called the festival “a once a year chance to find unique items.”
“We get 30,000 over the weekend,” Pool said. “Shopping is great. Food is excellent.”
Shoppers also can meet some new crafters, she said.
Cara Schaus of Mama’s Mittens said she and her mother turn old sweaters into mittens.
“We do a little bit of repurposing,” Shaus said. “We go thrifting and we find sweaters that are nice fibers, wool and sometimes nice fibers, such as cashmere and alpaca. We cut them up and we sew them into beautiful, thick mittens that are lined. Then, we look for vintage buttons and we decorate the wrists with coordinating buttons.”
Tina Tucker of Kinta focuses on faith through her Crosses and Crafts.
“I do the burlap wreaths,” she said. “I do old windows with scriptures and Psalm verses on them. I do the wooden layered crosses and other different types of wall hangings and plaques.”
She described the look as “a little bit of the farm style.”
Tucker said she and her daughter-in-law began making decorations for their homes.
“Then, people would ask ‘where did you get them,” she said. “We just started a little family business — a little family hobby.”

Touted as a family outdoor music festival, the Illinois River Jam is coming up Sept. 29-30 at Peyton’s Place on State Highway 10.
The event features camping and some returning popular musicians.
“It’s always a great event,” said Casey Peyton. “We keep it small on purpose so campers can mingle with musicians and everyone has a good time.”
Advance tickets for the weekend of music and camping are $45, and they’re $60 at the gate – if they are available, according to Peyton. Saturday-only tickets are $40.
“We anticipate there will still be tickets available at the gate – we normally do – but it seems like there’s a lot of interest this year, so we hope we still do,” said Peyton.
The event is generally open to 300-400 people, but this year, they’ve

“We keep it small and have a lot of repeat customers,” he said. “Unlike the summer, which is a mixed bag of people, at the Illinois River Jam, people come as strangers and leave as friends.”
Illinois River Jam is more for people who want to relax and not feel like they’re part of a crowd – who want to enjoy the river and time with friends and family. Campers need to plan for the weekend with food and other supplies.

“It’s more of a bring-your-own food camping event, but usually a food truck or two shows up,” said Peyton.
As the event has gained in popularity, campsites are limited. With all the talent this year, the campground has been booked since
mid-summer, according to Peyton. While there are no more campsites with electricity available, there are still primitive sites without electric hookups.
Many returning artists are in the

“Will & Grace” now stands as an example of “Never say ‘never.’ ”
Though the sitcom had an apparent finale showing the characters’ lives years later, forget about it: Those circumstances largely have been wiped clean as the original starring quartet – Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally, all of whom won Emmy Awards as Will, Grace, Jack and Karen – and much of the behind-thescenes team (including James Burrows, who directed every episode of the original show) return for an NBC revival that premieres Thursday, Sept. 28. And not just for one season: The reboot already has been renewed for another one.
The second coming of “Will & Grace” began with the popularity of a presidentialelection-related online video that regathered the core cast
last fall. Mullally recalls, “Max (Mutchnick, the series’ creator and executive producer, with David Kohan) just emailed the four of us and said, ‘Hey, guess what? I have this set (the one the show originally was done on), and we should do something.’ And within 45 minutes, all four of us had said, ‘Yes.’
“And he sent us the (election) script, and I was laughing and crying when I was reading it. I was like, ‘Well, this is what we should be doing.’ And I put the script down and I e-mailed Max and I said, ‘Why can’t we do the show again?’ And he e-mailed right back, ‘We can.’ ”
As for the original show’s ending, Kohan now says, “That was more or less a fantasy. It was a projection into the future. I also think that one of the things when we thought about bringing this back was, what was it that we missed. I think what
we missed was the dynamic between the four of them, more than we missed the possibility of seeing what their lives would be like as parents.”
While topicality helped bring “Will & Grace” back, the show’s inclusiveness in featuring gay characters prominently – when that still wasn’t common for television – also made an enduring impact.
“We’ve always said that the good effects were fantastic gravy,” McCormack reflects, “but we set out to be funny. We set out to be a sitcom that brought as many people in as possible, and I think the effect was that we actually brought in people from both colored states, from a wide range ... still, first and foremost, the job is to be funny. Will that include political and cultural things? Of course it will.”
“It was all on the page from day one,” Messing maintains
of the show’s inception in 1998, “and when we sat down together, it just came to life in a way that I had never experienced with anything
else or since. I think because we all started out in the theater and we sort of grew as artists, as collaborators, it very quickly became a

place that was very safe to try things and to fail. ‘Funny’ happens when you take risks. I like to think of the four of us as I think of comedy – as music – and each one of us is a different instrument. And when we play together, we’re at our best.”
Also a successful television producer now (“Hollywood Game Night,” “Grimm,” “Hot in Cleveland”), Hayes believes that what worked for “Will & Grace” the first time still does. “I think this show has always been relevant,” he says, “and under the umbrella of relevancy is ... everything. So it’s politics, it’s social issues, it’s sex.”
And Hayes is ready for the big acting workout that at least two more seasons of “Will & Grace” will bring. “We’re going to shoot it like ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ ” he muses, “where we shoot all of it at the same time.”

In a fall television season that’s introducing several new military dramas, Mike Vogel hopes “The Brave” will stand out.
The “Under the Dome” alum stars in NBC’s entry in the covert-operations sweepstakes, premiering Monday, Sept. 25. His character, Adam Dalton, leads an elite unit – comprised of Army, Navy and CIA pros – that’s sent around the world on risky missions for the Defense Intelligence Agency, whose Washington, D.C.-based deputy director (Anne Heche) uses high-tech means to monitor the assignments as they’re carried out.
Vogel deems his “Brave” new role “a bucketlist opportunity in my career, just getting the opportunity to pay homage to my family members (and) some of my nearest and dearest friends that come out of this community, and making sure that we do them justice. There’s a great quote; it’s debatable whether it was George Orwell or Rudyard Kipling that said, ‘People sleep well in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.’
“I’d like to add to that – and I think we understand it in America – having the freedom of opinion and thought and speech, and to come from many different viewpoints, that’s the beauty that makes up our country. We are afforded that opportunity because rough men and women stand ready to do violence on our behalf and protect that right. So for me, to have the ability to step into that
and in some miniscule, tiny way contribute to t real-life heroics is an honor. I’m humbled by it.”
On a purely cosmetic level, Vogel also apprecia the bearded look that “The Brave” requires of him “It helps me not look 12, so that’s always a plus,” muses. “We’re sweating our butts off half the tim it helps hide a little bit of that ... but, yeah, I enj it. A little itchy, but once you get used to it, you’ fine.”

You’re just out of college and you have no idea of what you want to do for a career. Ideally, you’d go into the field of your education, but maybe that’s no longer appealing or realistic.
What’s a recent grad to do?
If you’re like Anna Chlumsky, who was just out of the University of Chicago in the early 2000s with a B.A. in International Studies, your thoughts turn to your talents and your interests. And ideas start to come, some better than others.
“You’re like, ‘Well, I can write and I like traveling and I like eating ...,’ ” recalls the 36-year-old actress, who is currently in the midst of a five-episode guest-starring arc on the Saturday AMC drama “Halt and Catch Fire.” “So I found a posting at Zagat.”
Zagat, the print guide and website that has been publishing restaurant reviews and ratings in more than 70 cities since 1979, felt like a natural fit to the former child star of the 1991 theatrical hit “My Girl,” who, like her friends, was a foodie before the term became popular. So she accepted a position as a fact checker with the ultimate goal of becoming a food critic.
But there was one problem.
“(I realized) once I was there, they’re a polling site,” the Chicago native says. “Really, the happiest people at Zagat were the mathematicians, because it was a survey. It’s a survey, so the same type of folks who would be happy at Gallup or Nielsen or something are also happy there because it’s a lot of data collection.

“And if you opened up a Zagat guide,” she continues, “you realized that all the blurbs are in quotes and that’s because they actually don’t write them; they only grab what the surveyors have written and then they turn those into the reviews. ...”
“We knew we were never going to get close to writing a review,” she adds with a laugh, “unless you filled out a survey.”
And while she never did get to write for Zagat, she did have several articles published online, including one about Ovaltine. But she ultimately found acting to be more satisfying, and thus went back to her original career.
As for her current role on “Halt,” Chlumsky stars as Dr. Katie Herman, chief ontologist who plays a crucial role in the Search business venture in the series’ final season.
Not being technologically inclined, the actress had to look up what an ontologist is (“They’re categorists. They’re really good at drawing relationships between all things.”). But she immediately dialed into the character and her ability for independent thought.
“You can tell it by the way she dresses and her musical tastes, she’s kind of – for lack of a better term, a ’90s-type term – an ‘alterna-chick,’ ” Chlumsky says. “And so I think she’s always been open to the fringe. You know, I think that people who think differently are not strange to her. I think she’s a person who thinks differently. So I think that all of the coders and all of the collectors at Comet are just like this delightful motley crew for her to lead.”

It’s been more than a decade since the last “Star Trek” television series, so fans of the franchise likely are ready to make a new discovery.
CBS recognizes that; a major reason its subscription-based All Access streaming service will be the regular home of the new “Star Trek: Discovery” once the sci-fi show premieres Sunday, Sept. 24, on both CBS All Access and the CBS broadcast network. A prequel to the original “Trek,” it stars actress Sonequa Martin-Green as the intentionally malenamed Michael Burnham, the first officer aboard the Shenzhou, before the starship Discovery becomes part of her story built around the early conflict between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingons.

Life’s” Wilson Cruz) – some are younger incarnations of figures the “Trek” faithful know well. Among them: Mr. Spock’s Vulcan father Sarek (now portrayed by James Frain, formerly of “The Tudors” and “True Blood”) and con artist Harry Mudd (“The Office” alum Rainn Wilson)
The debut of “Star Trek: Discovery” was delayed twice from earlier this year, losing co-creator and intended showrunner Bryan Fuller along the way, and its remaining makers insist it was in the name of the show’s quality.
“You have to understand that we’re talking about massive sets, an approach that’s almost all practical,” says executive producer Alex Kurtzman, who created the series with Fuller. “Obviously, there’s a lot of (computer-generated) augmentation, but we wanted to build sets that felt immersive and real, where the actors could move around and it didn’t feel like everything was a set extension. And we wanted the costumes to be elaborate, and we needed to cast correctly, and we just wanted to do it right. And that’s the truth. So, we took our time.”

“War is the greatest conflict of all, really,” Martin-Green reflects, adding that “Star Trek: Discovery” also is about “those really deep, profound questions of ‘Who am I, and who are you, and how do I relate to you? How do we live with each other? How do we make acculturation a twoway exchange, rather than me dominating you or you dominating me?,’ which is one of the most beautiful pillars of ‘Star Trek,’ in my opinion. It’s one thing to tell our kids, ‘Oh, this is what a utopia looks like,’ especially when we are living in a dystopia in a sense ... but to be able to see it in action, to be able to see us aspiring to it, I think that that’s going to be really compelling.”
While many other “Discovery” characters also are new – such as the respective captains of the Discovery and the Shenzhou, played by Jason Isaacs and Michelle Yeoh, and two Discovery crew members who are personal partners (Broadway veteran Anthony Rapp and “My So-Called

Premiering Sunday as the first series developed for the CBS All-Access pay service, this new entry is set 10 years before the events of the original series and explores the Federation/Klingon cold war while following the adventures of the crew of the USS Discovery. Veteran “Trek” writers Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman created the series that stars Jason Isaacs, Doug Jones and Sonequa Martin-Green.

An after-show will accompany every new “Star Trek: Discovery” episode presented on CBS All Access. Franchise devotees are likely to have much to say about the latest iteration, and executive producer Aaron Harberts maintains “the aim is to not violate things that are very important to a great number of people. We take that very seriously ... but at a certain point, you have to sort of turn off the social media and drill down on what the best moves are for the characters, and what the best stories are, and what the best philosophy is (in) driving the story. What’s the larger discussion? And I think that, so far, we’ve found a way to balance it.”

Questions:
BY DAN LADD
When Hurricane Harvey literally rained down on Houston a month ago, one of the first players in the NFL to speak out was veteran Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten. He also visited several Houston Texans who were riding out the storm in Dallas and made a public plea for financial support for residents of the area. Witten and the Cowboys will visit the Arizona Cardinals, Monday, September 25 on ESPN’s Monday Night Football.
Jason Witten has always been the epitome of a football player since he joined the Cowboys as a third-round draft pick in 2003 under Bill Parcells. He had a quiet rookie season, but missed the only game of his career that year when he broke his jaw. He had a break-out year in 2004,
going to his first Pro Bowl. During his early years, Witten bonded with quarterback Tony Romo who was an undrafted free agent, also acquired in 2003. When Romo became the starter in 2006, the Romo-Witten combination became a staple in the Cowboys’ offense.
Now entering his 15th season, the future Hall of Famer remains a big target for developing quarterback Dak Prescott. This season, likely in Week 1, he will surpass Michael Irvin as the Cowboys’ all-time leading receiver in yardage and is second among NFL tight ends only to Tony Gonzalez. He holds a number of NFL records, including the most consecutive games for a tight end. A late-career Super Bowl ring sure would be fitting.

In the wake of the takeover of GenCoin, its founders move on to a new “StartUp” as Season 2 of Crackle’s so-named techie drama returns this week.
As the new 10-episode season begins streaming Thursday, Sept. 28, Izzy, Ronald and Nick (Otmara Marrero, Edi Gathegi, Adam Brody) are reinvesting in their partnership and putting all their efforts into the launch of ArakNet, a dark net prototype that challenges the trio’s moral code and puts them squarely in the middle of the digital black market – to their peril.
Their new venture draws the attention of Wes Chandler, a mercurial multimillionaire and former partner of Nick’s father, who is looking for a dotcom to invest in after years on the sidelines.
“He’s one of the original dotcommers,” explains the actor who joins the cast to portray him this season, Ron Perlman (“Hand of God,” “Hellboy”). “You know, he’s been there, done that, got the T-shirt. He got really, really, really rich and then he got really hurt and then he went away to lick his wounds. And keeping a bunch of assets, losing a lot of his money but keeping a lot of sexy assets – he owns an island, he owns a plane. And he’s been keeping his powder dry and then he just emerges when he smells out the potential of these young kids who are about to make a big, big noise in the dotcom world, particularly the dark net.”
He’s also particularly impressed with Izzy, the GenCoin creator who Bentley sees as an “out-and-out genius,” according to Perlman.
“She’s creating things that are game-changers,” the actor says, “that aren’t just additions (or) enhancements to an already vibrant industry. They’re game-changers. Whoever gets along with her is going to revolutionize the way everything’s done, so I suspect –you know, he does a little research and he comes up with that and he’s sort of, ‘OK, if I’m coming back, this is the way to do it.’ ”
His return to the dotcom world reunites him with Nick, who has mixed feelings about the relationship.
“He kind of becomes a surrogate father figure for Nick,” Brody explains, “but at the same time kind of an antagonist as well and also the new benefactor for ArakNet. So he comes in as their new boss in a way, but he’s a mercurial person and it’s hard to get a very good read on him. But suffice it to say he’s very intimidating. ... He wants to pull all the strings.”
