Kiefer Sutherland stars in “Designated Survivor,” premiering Wednesday on ABC.

BY JAY BOBBIN
For the better part of a television decade, Kiefer Sutherland protected presidents.
Now, he’s the president who needs protection.
The former “24” star returns to series work as the ABC drama “Designated Survivor” debuts Wednesday, Sept. 21, casting him as someone who moves into the Oval Office quite unexpectedly. The intense opening hour starts with Tom Kirkman (Sutherland) as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and the Cabinet member left behind – the “designated survivor” –when other top government officials are killed in an explosion during the State of the Union Address. Kirkman reluctantly becomes the new chief executive, soon learning that the danger likely isn’t over.
Also among the executive producers, along with series creator David Guggenheim and “Criminal Minds” and “Grey’s Anatomy” veteran
Mark Gordon, Sutherland (who recently released his first country-music album, “Down in a Hole”) was drawn into “Designated Survivor” through his long friendship with Gordon and his reaction to the pilot script. “I had no intention of doing a television show,” he says, “and I was very busy, but I felt I needed to give this script a cursory read so that I could at least respond with some intelligence and explain why I couldn’t do it. And I found myself on page 22, and I remember saying, ‘S... .’
“I felt the script was so beautifully structured. It had the thriller aspect of trying to find out who had done this. It had a family drama; what happens when, overnight, you go from a very structured life to the life of the President of the United States and the First Lady? What happens to your children? What sacrifices are made there? And then it also allowed itself, on a political level, to have discussions that I think we need to have in this country in a rational
way – not so divisive, but really important and respectable points of view from the left and the right.”
A strong cast surrounds Sutherland in “Designated Survivor.” Natascha McElhone (“Californication”) plays his wife, a lawyer with her own adjustment to make in suddenly becoming First Lady; Maggie Q (“Nikita”) portrays an FBI agent probing the ongoing threat; Kal Penn (“House”), who actually worked in the White House for a while, appears as the new president’s skeptical speechwriter; Italia Ricci (“Chasing Life”) is seen as the chief of staff; and Adan Canto (“The Following”) plays the deputy chief of staff and President Kirkman’s adviser.
Another “Designated Survivor” executive producer is movie writer-producer Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Apocalypse”), who admits he “didn’t know” what a designated survivor was: “I’d never heard of it before. And I think for most people in the world, they haven’t heard of it. And it is this

incredibly high concept growing an idea. What I responded to was the notion of an everyman, or a character who wasn’t prepared for the most difficult job responsibility in the entire world. Just from a storytelling perspective, that was so rich. It was so dramatic. The only debate we had was whether it was a television show or a feature.”
In that vein, some may wonder where “Designated Survivor” will go after its engrossing premiere. “I think one of the things that’s going to be interesting in the context of this show,” Sutherland reflects, “is that when (Kirkman) makes an attempt to become political, he might not do it so well at first. You’re going to watch someone really try to learn how to manipulate Washington as Washington slowly gets put back together. Things are going to become more complicated than his ability to just think of what the right thing is to do.”

How ‘recurring’ will Connie Britton be in ‘Nashville’ Season 5?
“Nashville” may have gotten an exciting premiere date for Jan. 5, 2017, but it also got a bit of bad news regarding its leading lady, Connie Britton.
Britton’s character, Rayna James, has always been the main focus of the show, even though other characters like Juliette (Hayden Panettiere), Scarlett (Claire Bowen) and Gunnar (Sam Palladio) have stolen their fair share of attention over the years. Now, though, Britton has announced that she will be reducing her role in Season 5, making her a recurring character instead of series regular.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Britton has only signed on for 10 of the 22 episodes CMT ordered for “Nashville” Season 5, meaning we’ll probably be seeing a whole lot less of Rayna James than we’re used to.
So far, it’s still up in the air if those 10 episodes are all we’ll get, or if Britton is still negotiating appearances in the final 12 episodes. If so, we figure there are three different options for how frequently (or infrequently) she’ll appear:
The Bradley Cooper option
Bradley Cooper signed on as a recurring character in “Limitless,” and while we certainly saw more of him than we ever expected to, that was still only a handful of times throughout the season. If Britton decides to max out at 10 episodes, Rayna could be “on tour” for long arcs during Season 5, only popping in here and there.
The Claire Holt option
Claire Holt seemed like an entirely integral ingredient in “The Originals,” but thanks to a 16-episode contract negotiation, her character Rebekah abruptly exited the series halfway through its first season. If “Nashville” decides to blow all 10 episodes at once, we might need to start worrying that Rayna will somehow check out of the show for good.
The Edward Herrmann option
While Edward Herrmann technically took on the title of “special guest star,” he was still a huge presence during the original run of “Gilmore Girls.” Assuming negotiations for the other 12 episodes of “Nashville’s” fifth season offer Britton a reduced role, we might get something similar to a Richard Gilmore situation. Around, but not omnipresent.

Summer may be coming to its official end, but that doesn’t mean the heat still isn’t on, especially in a few cooking series airing this week.

That’s especially the case Sunday, Sept. 18, on Food Network, as host Tyler Florence heads into the tripledigit temperatures of Palm Springs, Calif., for an especially sizzling episode of “The Great Food Truck Race: The Family Face-Off.” There under the blazing desert sun, contestants must turn themselves into human roadside attractions to draw customers to their trucks. Feel the burn.
Fire is certainly in the equation on Cooking Channel’s “Man Fire Food” on Tuesday, Sept. 20, as host Roger Mooking goes to Texas to help grill steaks on a burn barrel and then watch dessert being baked in a coal-covered cast-iron Dutch oven. Watching these innovative men and women as they prepare delicious meals in their cooking contraptions is always fascinating.
On a cooler note on the Saturday, Sept. 24, edition of PBS’ “Moveable Feast With Fine Cooking” (check local listings), host Pete Evans takes viewers to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, where local chefs David Barzelay and Brandon Jew forage for seaweed and redwood bark and prepare a meal of steamed halibut and bone marrow and aged cheddar cheese with crudite, which is then served in a redwood grove.

Ring in the fall with some hot food programming
Venturing even further west is Travel Channel’s “Secret Eats With Adam Richman” on Monday, Sept. 19, as the adventurous host and culinary thrillseeker ventures to Hong Kong to sample some perfectly grilled tomahawk steak. Make sure to take notes.
The Friday, Sept. 23, episode of Food’s “Burgers, Brews & ‘Que” takes host Michael Symon to Traverse City, Mich., where he meets up with longtime summer resident Mario Batali and the two consume smoked Lake Michigan fish, the region’s famous olive burgers and, of course, beer.
Also on Friday, host Guy Fieri checks out the “Best of the West” in a so-titled episode of Food’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” as he hits up unpretentious eateries from the Southwest to the Rocky Mountains.
As for competition series, tune it to Food on Wednesday, Sept. 21, for the tournament finale of “Camp Cutthroat 2: Alton’s Revenge,” in which two chefs are tasked with making their chili dogs in a leaky boat and then balancing on a log while preparing game dishes. At least clean-up should be easy.
“Beat Bobby Flay” Thursday, Sept. 22, on Food, pits TV food stylist Jackie Rothong against Italian-born Matteo Boffo for the right to take on Flay in the final round, with Network chef Scott Conant and realityshow star Bethenny Frankel determining the winner.
And a breakfast-in-bed-themed edition of Cooking’s “Sugar Showdown” on Wednesday finds the baking tandems competing in a speedy elimination round while incorporating grapefruit as the mystery ingredient. One might say that’s unimaginable.

One couple’s tale of bravery and sacrifice in the helping those facing Nazi persecution is at the center of a new documentary premiering this week on PBS.
Co-directed by Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky and narrated by Tom Hanks, the 90-minute “Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War,” airing Tuesday, Sept. 20 (check local listings), tells the story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp, a Wellesley, Mass., Unitarian minister and his wife, who answered their church’s call to help provide relief to refugees, dissidents and Jews trying to escape Nazi persecution in 1939 Czechoslovakia.

Martha and Waitstill Sharp

BY JAY BOBBIN

Couple rescue hundreds from persecution in PBS’ ‘Defying the Nazis’

But a mission that was supposed to take only a few months took nearly two years, during which they would endure harrowing encounters with Nazi police, narrowly escape arrest and watch as the Third Reich invaded Eastern Europe. On the home front, their family life suffered as their children felt abandoned and the bonds of their marriage began to unravel.
But the success of the missions was undeniable as hundreds of Jewish scientists, doctors, journalists, anti-Nazi activists and children would find their way to freedom.
The documentary was a passion project for Joukowsky, a grandson of the Sharps, who spent the last 15 years going through boxes of documents and photos from his grandparents’ basement, doing research, interviewing people, piecing stories together and shooting footage, then polishing the final product with the help of Burns.
“My grandparents never published their memoirs,” Joukowsky explains, “so this was my chance to help them tell their story. And I very much wanted them to tell it in their own words, from their own journals, from their own writings.”
In addition to this being a story of heroism on the part of the Sharps, it’s also about the toll war exacts on family. The children, especially Joukowsky’s mother, were deeply resentful of their parents leaving them to help other children overseas, and photos presented in the film reflect that. The experience also led Waitstill and Martha to grow apart, divorce and eventually marry others. In the intervening years, Martha would flourish and even run for Congress before passing away in 1999. Waitstill, who struggled after his marriage ended, died in 1984.
“The point of bringing up the divorce,” Joukowsky says, “was more to show their humanity, to show the full sense of their life and the sacrifice that they made. And I think the film would have been beautiful as just a heroic film of what they did and you can watch the first 20 minutes and be very inspired. But when you see the whole film, you understand in the Unitarian context that we’re all human.”

Are you a fan of horror stories such as “The Exorcist”? I love horror movies, love scary movies. Oh, yeah, absolutely. “The Exorcist,” like, curled my hair. Like most people, I saw it when I was a teenager and (was) scarred for life. It’s really the best horror movie ever made. I think a lot of people agree. I made another horror film quite a while ago, “The Fly” – well, “Beetlejuice” was humorous – but I don’t get spooked by stuff that I know we’re just faking. Even if people just say, “Oh, you’re doing these very heavy scenes, do you bring it home with you?,” I don’t really get impacted in those kinds of ways. But I love scary stuff. I love being a part of it.
Do you believe evil forces actually exist?
Oh, I don’t know. I believe there is evil in the world, and we’ve certainly seen instances of it historically and currently ... but whether there’s a being who is in charge of it and responsible for inserting it in people, I’m not so sure. I think it’s just part of that everybody is capable of an extreme range of behaviors, and it’s what you are exposed to and what your character can resist.
How does the crusade you’ve long waged for improved opportunities for women in media play into “The Exorcist”?
When I was first approached, they were very earnest about letting me know, “We know what you do. We want you to be proud of this show. We want you to not have any problems with how we are doing everything.” So, there’s a lot of great things happening. Half of our writers’ room is women, which is very exciting and unfortunately unusual, and there are more important female characters than male in the story also. We are going to have two female directors out of our 10, which I’m excited about as well, so I haven’t really had to bust anybody on anything. I think they are going to go way out of their way to make sure that I can be extremely proud of the show, which I am.

Sean McDonough of Monday Night Football on ESPN
“I don’t use it a lot but it’s mostly to either record TV shows that I like to watch and not going to be able to watch when they air live or tape some games that I’m going to miss that I want to see later on. I kind of like the ABC shows. I got kind of into ‘Scandal’ for a while and ‘How to Get Away With Murder’ and ‘Nashville.’ Those are sort of the ones that I would record most often.”

Tiffany Vazquez, Saturday afternoon host on Turner Classic Movies
“I love ‘Jane the Virgin,’ ‘Broad City’ and ‘Veep.’ When I watch ‘Veep’ and the words are so incredibly well-crafted, I feel like whoever’s in the writers’ room has to be an acute fan of 1940s comedies. The way the lines are written and delivered, it just feels like a movie like ‘The Man Who Came to Dinner.’ ”
Sherrod Small of “Black and White” on A&E Network
“Oh, ‘Game of Thrones,’ of course. And I’ve actually got all my ‘Game of Thrones’ saved up. So I haven’t watched one from this season yet, so I’ll get to sit down one weekend and watch all of them (laughs). But me and my girlfriend live together so there’s also a bunch of Kardashian nonsense on there. All the ‘Real Housewives’ are on there so I have to dig through all that stuff to get to my things. There’s a lot of ‘Real Housewives.’ Can they please stop making those shows?”

Jake Smollett of “Smollett Eats” on Cooking Channel “I record a lot of Food Network shows. And not to be biased or anything but I record all of ‘Underground’ and ‘Empire’ (laughs).”

If Denny Hamlin’s racing season ends the way it began, he won’t be complaining. Hamlin started NASCAR’s 2016 Sprint Cup racing season by winning the Daytona 500. He’d like to wrap it up by winning the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship, which begins Sunday, Sept. 18, with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 from Chicagoland Speedway. The race, which is the first of three Round of 16 races in NASCAR’s post season, airs on NBCSN. Although victory lane became tougher to find for Hamlin after his Daytona 500 victory, he has been consistent enough throughout the season to be among the top ten drivers in the Sprint Cup standings. Eight top five finishes and a dozen top tens sure helped, as did a victory in August at Watkins Glen. Hamlin won at Chicagoland in 2015 but was later eliminated from the post season after he crashed at Talladega and did not have enough points to advance to the round of eight.
Hamlin broke in to what is now the Sprint Cup series in 2006 and is the only rookie thus far to qualify for the post season. His best year by far was 2010, when he won eight races, but lost the championship on the final race of the season to Jimmy Johnson. He has finished third in the standings twice; his rookie season and in 2013. A repeat performance at Chicagoland would again get him off to a good start for this season’s Chase.

C h e c k i n g i n w i t h Checking in with

BY JAY BOBBIN
After spending her last series tracing the arc of a spy-game novice, Piper Perabo knew that in her next show, she wanted to play someone in charge.
She gets her wish in the ABC drama “Notorious,” premiering Thursday, Sept. 22. The “Covert Affairs” alum stars as a driven cable-news producer who gets an inside track on many stories from a charismatic, well-connected Los Angeles lawyer (former “Graceland” co-star Daniel Sunjata). The characters are based on two people widely known in their respective fields: former “Larry King Live” executive producer Wendy Walker and criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos, who are among the executive producers of the new series.
“When I did ‘Covert Affairs,’ I played a rookie when we started the show,” Perabo reflects, “so what I was looking for (in another series role) was a boss. And when I read this script, I felt like I’d found what I was looking for.”
Moreover, the part satisfies Perabo’s own nature. “I am a news junkie,” she attests. “I really like radio news, but this has gotten me into television news. Wendy was kind enough to get me a lot of entree into CNN in Atlanta and CNN in New York, so I spent time in the control rooms.
“I had no idea (of) the team of people it took to produce live news, especially on the nights when news is breaking during the show, and you see these teams of incredibly intelligent people working so quickly and (in) these live breaks to assemble a story. It’s thrilling. So now, as soon as live news is breaking on a show, I’m watching it on all of the different channels because I want to see how everybody is showing it.”
Having now seen how television news works from the inside, Perabo cites CNN’s Anderson Cooper as a prime example of her “Notorious” prep: “it’s amazing, the amount of proof he needs before he says something on the air. It has to be proven to him so many times. And even when they’re telling him, ”Yes, we’ve got this, we got it from a reliable source,“ he wants it checked again and again and again. They’re really serious about it, and I think I believe it more now that I’ve been behind the curtain.”

Dropping Thursday is this eight-episode anthology series from Joe Swanberg (“Drinking Buddies”) that shines the light on diverse Chicagoans as they stumble their way through a maze of love, sex, technology and culture. Cast members include Orlando Bloom, Malin Akerman, Elizabeth Reaser, Hannibal Buress, Emily Ratajkowski, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Jane Adams.
“Longmire: Season 5,” www.netflix.com/ title/70269479
Robert Taylor, Lou Diamond Phillips and Katee Sackhoff return for the fifth season of this dark drama about troubled Wyoming sheriff Walt Longmire, who is trying to rebuild his life following the death of his wife. Dylan Walsh (“Nip/Tuck”) joins the cast in the recurring role of Shane Muldoon, a crime boss, and according to reports, there may be romance in the future for Walt and Vic (Sackhoff). Drops Friday.
“Ocean Parkway,” vimeo.com/channels/ oceanparkway
Produced and acted by Brooklynites and shot in one’s Ocean Parkway apartment, this four-episode series follows the lives of the Wickershams, a downwardly mobile family of four trying to survive life in the New York borough as well as one another. According to co-creator Nicole Haran, “it’s about raising kids and lowering expectations.” Enough said.
“Inconceivable,” www. storyhive.com/project/ show/id/1203
From north of the border comes this comedy series about a straight filmmaker and his lesbian friend who find their lives, careers and finances turned upside down when they conceive a child. The story is based on the actual experiences of the creators, Vancouverites Joel Ashton McCarthy and Rachel Kirkpatrick, who are expecting their first child this month.

6 p.m. on KTUL Countdown to the Emmy Awards: Red Carpet Live
“Who are you wearing?” Viewers can make an at-home game of how many times that question is asked during the course of this hour, but the query is standard for any program of this type. It’s sure to be posed to many of those entering Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater for the television industry’s top ceremony, but also included will be facts about this year’s nominees. The interviews aren’t particularly indepth because they’re so brief, but they still can be fun.
8 p.m. on SHOW Ray Donovan
In the Season 4 finale, “Rattus Rattus,” Ray (Liev Schreiber) is convinced his deal with Hector (Ismael Cruz Cordova) will save his bacon, but Sonia (Embeth Davidtz) turns over some damning evidence to Frank Barnes (Michael McGrady). Forced to wear a wire, Ray desperately tries to play the Russian mob against the FBI, only to realize in mid-course that the Russians may know he’s snitching. While trying to cash in on the big fight, meanwhile, Mickey (Jon Voight) stumbles onto something that could help Ray.
9:30 p.m. on HBO Vice Principals
Realizing that it’s time to fish or cut bait, put up or shut up, and basically any other phrase meaning “now or never,” frenemies Gamby and Russell (Danny McBride, Walton Goggins) put their endgame for Dr. Brown (Kimberly Hebert Gregory) into motion in the Season 1 finale “End of the Line.” Georgia King also stars.
7 p.m. on KOKI
Gotham
Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) charts a new course for himself as a bounty hunter — and there’s much to hunt, given the monsters overrunning the title city — as Season 3 begins with “Mad City: Better to Reign in Hell ... .” Baffling him here is why the Indian Hill fugitives’ powers seem to be backfiring on them. Barbara and Tabitha (Erin Richards, Jessica Lucas) go into business together. Bruce (David Mazouz)
worries about his mirror image being on the loose.
7:30 p.m. on KOTV
Kevin Can Wait
The character’s name and the setting — Long Island, where the show is being filmed — may be different, but no fan of “The King of Queens” will feel any discomfort from Kevin James’ return to sitcom work. Debuting here, it casts him as a cop intending to ease into retirement, but surprises on the homefront may make that tough. Erinn Hayes (“Childrens Hospital”) plays his wife, with Taylor Spreitler, Mary CharlesJones and James DiGiacomo as their offspring.
9 p.m. on KJRH
The Good Place
Michael Schur (“Parks and Recreation”) now applies his creative sensibility to this new comedy about the afterlife. Kristen Bell, back in series work after “House of Lies,” is wellmatched to the role of a woman trying to make up for her misdeeds — and there were many — during her lifetime, with a sage mentor (Ted Danson) guiding her toward goodness. After this “preview” with two back-to-back episodes, the series airs in its usual slot starting Thursday.
TUESDAY
7 p.m. on KOED
The Contenders — 16 for ’16
The second episode of the new documentary series about past presidential candidates focuses on “The Flamethrowers”: five-term Vermont governor Howard Dean, who earned wide fame for a certain “scream” along the campaign trail, and conservative columnist Pat Buchanan. They based their platforms on returning America to what they saw it as having once been, and the identities they acquired as rebels within their parties generated a legacy that still is felt.
7:31 p.m. on KOKI New Girl
Summer break is over for Nick (Jake Johnson), meaning a big trial for Jess (Zooey Deschanel) when he returns from New Orleans early, as the comedy’s sixth season opens with “House Hunt.” The episode’s title applies to newlyweds Schmidt and Cece (Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone), who try to find a residence of their own. Winston (Lamorne Morris) tries to keep his romance with Aly (guest star Nasim Pedrad) going long-distance.
8 p.m. on KOTV Bull
Here’s why Michael Weatherly left “NCIS,” and CBS is doing all it can to help him — and itself — by scheduling his new series right after his longtime home base. This premiere reintroduces him as a trial consultant based on Dr. Phil McGraw, an executive producer here ... as is Weatherly, whose fictionalized Dr. Jason Bull uses his psychology to analyze everyone who factors into a trial, from the
defendant to the jurors. Co-stars include Freddy Rodriguez.
8:01 p.m. on KOKI Scream Queens
The sophomore round of executive producer Ryan Murphy’s horrorand-humor mashup starts with “Scream Again,” set several years later — and in an abandoned hospital that has Dean Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) as its new owner. She recruits the Chanels to join the staff, and that only can mean one thing: fresh danger. Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin and Keke Palmer also return, with John Stamos and Taylor Lautner among notable new cast members.
9 p.m. on KJRH This Is Us
The very fine premiere of this drama introduces several characters who have the same birthday and face individual challenges ... and who have surprising connections that will reveal themselves over time. Among them: the husband (Milo Ventimiglia) of a woman (Mandy Moore) who’s expecting triplets; a businessman (Sterling K. Brown, “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”) who finds the father who abandoned him; and a resentful actor (Justin Hartley).
7 p.m. on KOKI Lethal Weapon
After four enduringly popular movies, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are a hard act to follow, but Clayne Crawford (“Rectify”) and Damon Wayans Sr. (“In Living Color”) give it a shot in this new series iteration of the seriocomic adventure franchise. Martin Riggs (Crawford) still has a troubled past that makes him an initially unwanted wild card for police-detective partner and family man Roger Murtaugh (Wayans). Jordana Brewster also stars.
7 p.m. on KOTV Survivor
Who would fare better in this grueling contest, millennials or members of Generation X? That question is put to the test as Season 33 of the competition begins in Fiji with this 90-minute premiere, as host Jeff Probst welcomes members of both groups to the game that inevitably sees most of its participants outwitted, outplayed and outlasted. The goal is the same as always: to be the last entrant whose torch isn’t snuffed out, thus earning the $1 million grand prize.

8 p.m. on KOKI Empire
Several months have gone by in real time, but not in the case of the stories here, since Season 3 of the drama starts right where Season 2 left off. However, in “Light in Darkness,” Lucious (Terrence Howard) also faces new problems — and they’re stirred by his half-brother Tariq (Morocco Omari), who’s part of a federal task force looking into his dealings. Leslie Uggams and Vivica A. Fox reprise their guest roles. Taraji P. Henson also stars.
9 p.m. on KTUL Designated Survivor
Kiefer Sutherland’s series follow-up to “24,” this new drama takes its title from the term used for the member of a presidential cabinet who stays behind during the State of the Union Address, should anything happen to the others. It does in this premiere, suddenly making the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (Sutherland) the new chief executive. Co-stars include Natascha McElhone, Kal Penn (who actually worked in the White House) and Italia Ricci.
9 p.m. on OWN Queen Sugar
In the new episode “The Darker Sooner,” the Bordelon siblings try to return to their normal lives, but Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) suffers some setbacks as he struggles to run the farm. Nova (Rutina Wesley) tries to win justice for a friend’s son she is convinced was wrongfully sent to prison, while Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) resumes managing her husband’s sports career and legal matters.
7 p.m. on KJRH Superstore
Though an Olympic-themed episode aired in the interim, the comedy’s official Season 2 premiere — “Strike” — picks up where things left off in the show’s freshman round. Amy (America Ferrera) tries to up the urgency of a walkout by Cloud 9 staffers, who protest the firing of Glenn (Mark McKinney). The arrival of a district manager (guest star Michael Bunin) sent to oversee the store temporarily changes some workers’ tunes. Ben Feldman also stars.
7:30 p.m. on KJRH The Good Place
After Monday’s “preview” airing, the new comedy series from “Parks and Recreation” alumnus Michael Schur has its official premiere in its regular time period with “Tahani Al-Jamil.” Eleanor’s (Kristen Bell) adjustment to her heavenly new surroundings continues as Chidi (William Jackson Harper) starts her education in ethics by suggesting kindness to neighbors. Chidi himself is the object of Michael and Janet’s (Ted Danson, D’Arcy Carden) efforts.
7:59 p.m. on KOKI Pitch
A female baseball prodigy (Kylie Bunbury, “Under the Dome”) be-

comes the first woman recruited by the majors in the premiere of this drama. Naturally, a lot of attention comes with that, some undesired — challenging her to keep her head in the game. Initially developed as a feature film, the show also stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Dan Lauria (the dad on “The Wonder Years”), Ali Larter and Mark Consuelos. The actors, not doubles, do most of the ball playing here.
8 p.m. on KTUL
Notorious
Based on the experiences of criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos and television talk producer Wendy Walker (“Larry King Live”) — who are among the executive producers here — this new drama probes the links between the law and the media. Piper Perabo (“Covert Affairs”) returns to series work as the news producer in question, and Daniel Sunjata (“Graceland”) plays the lawyer. Co-stars include Ryan Guzman and Aimee Teegarden (“Friday Night Lights”).
9 p.m. on KJRH
The Blacklist
The events of the preceding episode — which led to the discovery that the supposedly deceased Liz (Megan Boone) is still very much alive — progress as the drama’s fourth season starts with “Esteban.” Red (James Spader) tries to rescue her from her abductor (guest star Ulrich Thomsen), who claims he’s her father. Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff), Cooper (Harry Lennix) and other past associates of Liz struggle with the newest information about her.

This series reboot casts Lucas Till (“X-Men: First Class”) as the inventive hero ... less of a loner this time as he works with the U.S. government in the Department of External Affairs. George Eads (“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”) plays ex-CIA man Jack Dalton, his partner. Tracy Spiridakos (“Revolution”) also appears in the premiere, “The Rising.”
8 p.m. on KOTV Hawaii Five-0
It’s hard to keep a wounded, recovering McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) down, as Danny (Scott Caan)
learns in the premiere of the crimedrama reboot’s seventh season, “Makaukau ’oe e Pa’ani?” (Hawaiian for “Ready to Play?”). Not only is a serial killer’s body delivered to Five-0 headquarters, it has a chess piece in its mouth — as does another murderer’s corpse, suggesting a vigilante is loose. Rosalind Chao begins recurring as Hawaii’s governor.

The Exorcist
A revision of both a best-selling novel and one of the all-time-classic horror movies, this new drama series — launching with “Chapter One: And Let My Cry Come Unto Thee” — stars Ben Daniels (“Flesh and Bone”) and Alfonso Herrera as priests trying to save a family from apparent demons. Oscar winner Geena Davis and Alan Ruck (“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”) play the heads of the household, with Brianne Howey and Hannah Kasulka as their daughters.

Van Helsing
This new horror-action series opens by reprising “Help Me,” which the channel sneaked in July and introduces Vanessa Helsing (Kelly Overton), daughter of the legendary vampire hunter of “Dracula” fame, who comes back from the dead to lead humans against their bloodsucking overlords. “Seen You,” which immediately follows, is a flashback episode that provides background on Vanessa and how she reached this point in her destiny. The cast also includes Jonathan Scarfe, Paul Johansson and Christopher Heyerdahl.

Gabby Douglas

Donald Trump yesterday continued his attempts to appeal to black voters, telling attendees at a rally, “What the hell do you have to lose? Give me a chance!” Said black voters, “We’re not at this rally.”
The Trump campaign recently announced that Donald Trump will be delaying his major address on immigration that was originally scheduled to take place on Thursday. So if you want to know where Trump stands on immigration, you’ll just have to wait until a year ago.
Marvel announced today that it will be launching a female reboot of Iron Man, starring a character named Ironheart. So, congratulations to my ex-girlfriend.
It was just announced that two-time Olympian Gabby Douglas will be on the panel of judges at the 2017 Miss America Competition. So good luck impressing her in the talent portion. “Nice baton
twirling, but can you do a triple back-flip with a twist?”
Donald Trump is accusing Hillary Clinton of being too ill, too frail to be commander in chief. Rudy Giuliani made a suggestion to go online and look up “Hillary Clinton illness” — if it’s on the internet, you know it must be true.
I put my symptoms into WebMD and found out I’ve started menopause.
In a new election bombshell, the State Department has been ordered by a federal judge to produce nearly 15,000 of Hillary Clinton’s unreleased emails. I don’t want to say Hillary is worried about this story blowing up, but today she asked Ryan Lochte to make up another robbery.
At first Donald Trump came out with guns blazing, said he’s going to kick all the Mexicans out, he’s going to build a wall to keep them from coming back in. Last night during a town hall on Fox News he said he could be softening, which is normal, it happens to a lot of men his age.
He’s now agreed to give immigrants a 30-minute head start before he tries to catch them with a net.
Melania Trump is planning to sue a British newspaper for defamation. Apparently, the paper called her “happily married.”
Four sponsors have now dropped Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte. On the bright side, he just signed a huge deal with Bob’s Urinal Cakes.
