The ‘Continental’ experience: John Wick franchise gets three-night TV stay

corner

“Broadcast News” goes behind the TV scenes

may not have the edge of other movies about the television business, but “BroadNews” still has plenty to like. Being shown on MGM+ Hits on Friday, Sept. 22, writer-director James L. Brooks’ 1987 comedy-drama comes from a world he already w, having co-created the TV newsroom of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Howhe fortified his effort by landing an adviser in CBS News veteran Susan Zirinsky, eteran CBS News producer who’s now the chief of that entire division. e’s also the inspiration for one of the stor y’s chief characters Jane Craig, a driven producer in a network bureau in Washington, D.C. The role made Holly unter a star, and perfect opposite her is William Hurt is cast as charismatic Tom unick, a newly hired reporter whose admission of not fully understanding the repulses Jane, though she also can’t deny her attraction to him. Albert Brooks completes the tale’s romantic triangle as Aaron Altman, a correspondent who’s more than capable at his job, though he lacks star quality. This is a film that remains enjoyable to watch time and again.

For many of us, when we book a stay in a hotel (particularly a luxury one), comfort ranks above all else. Though the meaning of the word “comfort” varies from one person to the next and could encompass anything from the thread count of the bedsheets to one’s proximity to the bar, “comfort” in the world of John Wick is most closely associated with personal safety

Those familiar with the John Wick franchise will already be aware of The Continental’s most important rule: the assassins seeking refuge within the hotel shall not conduct any “business” on the grounds. Put simply, no hits will be tolerated on the premises.

That said, NBC/Peacock is certainly hoping for a hit of its own (granted, a “hit” of a different kind) when the new miniseries “The Continental: From the World of John Wick” begins streaming Friday, Sept. 22, on Peacock.

John Wick (Keanu Reeves, “The Matrix,” 1999), the trained assassin who lends his name to the franchise supported by The Continental Hotel, first made audiences fall in love with him in the 2014 film, simply titled “John Wick.” Despite his former career as a hitman, Wick exhibits a soft side while taking care of a new beagle puppy in the wake of his wife’s death. However, when a group of gangsters breaks into Wick’s home and the puppy is targeted, Wick loses all sensitivity and comes out of retirement to avenge his furry friend. And while Wick’s situation may change from film to film, one thing that remains a constant throughout the franchise is The Continental; and this is where Peacock’s newest series comes in.

Created by Greg Coolidge (“Ride Along,” 2014), Shawn Simmons (“Wayne”) and Kirk Ward (“The Turkey Bowl,” 2019), “The Continental: From the World of John Wick” is a three-part noir-action miniseries that focuses on the history of the mysterious hotel chain that operates as “neutral territory for members of the criminal underworld” (per IMDb).

Colin Woodell (“The Flight Attendant”) stars as a young Winston Scott, the manager of The Continental’s New York division and a character already known to franchise fans thanks to the work of “Deadwood” actor Ian McShane. The role of Winston is a meaty one for Woodell, filled with lots of backstory for both character and setting as the series’ events dive deep into real-life New York crime history. While the specifics of the miniseries are being kept a secret for obvious reasons, there has been word that the events take place over three nights at The Continental in the 1970s and that there is a correlation to both the Winter of Discontent and the rise of the American Mafia.

Additionally, audiences can expect to see a few familiar faces along the way; most notably that of controversial actor Mel Gibson (“Braveheart,” 1995). Joining Gibson and Woodell on the small screen are Nhung Kate (“The Housemaid,” 2016) as Yen, Katie McGrath (“Supergirl”) as the Adjudicator, Jessica Allain (“The Laundromat,” 2019) as Lou, Adam Shapiro (“Never Have I Ever”) as Lemmy, Jeremy Bobb (“The Knick”) as Mayhew, Dan Li (“Luther: The Fallen Sun,” 2023) as Orphan Master, Sallay Garnett (“Conversations with Friends”) as the Concierge, Peter Greene (“Pulp Fiction,” 1994) as young Uncle Charlie (portrayed later in life by “Twin Peaks” reboot actor David Patrick Kelly), and new talent Ayomide Adegun as Charon, a role made famous by beloved actor and TV personality Lance Reddick (“White House Down,” 2013), who died earlier this year.

more retro rewinds

“The Big Bang Theory” (TBS, Wednesday, Sept. 20): It was no small accomplishment for this sitcom to land Stephen Hawking as a guest, which it did in Season 5 with “The Hawking Excitation.” The scientific genius figures into a story that sees complications arise among Howard (Simon Helberg) and his pals as a lecture by Hawking at Caltech nears.

“The Birds” (Turner Classic Movies, Thursday, Sept. 21): A rare instance of Alfred Hitchcock relying on villains who aren’t human, this hugely effective 1963 thriller – presented here as part of a night of movies set in the San Francisco area – turns our feathered friends into attacking enemies, with electronic sounds enhancing the terror as they descend upon an otherwise quiet village’s population. Tippi Hedren, in her first film (and her first with director Hitchcock), plays a visitor whose stay becomes memorable for the wrong reasons; Rod Taylor, Suzanne Pleshette and Jessica Tandy also star

“CHiPs” (Charge, Friday, Sept. 22): This police series was good for surprising guest appearances, and Phyllis Diller added her name to the list in the first-season story “Crack-Up.” The unique comedy star plays a fellow hospital patient who takes it upon herself to amuse Jon (Larry Wilcox) after he has an accident.

Spooky sweets: ‘Halloween Wars’ returns for ‘unlucky’ Season 13

A fan-favorite for foodies and Halloween alike, this seasonal series has revived itself once ushering in autumn alongside a familiar face athan Bennett (“Mean Girls,” 2004) returns the latest (and spookiest) season of “Hallow premiering Sunday, Sept. 17, on Food Network. After leaving the series during Season 11 back in on his acting career, Bennett now to the “Halloween Wars” kitchen, replacing im host Zak Bagans (“Ghost Adventures”), appeared as a ghostly, virtual host for the years. “It’s so exciting!” Bennett shared in interview. “I was off the show for a few years this is my triumphant return. I’m coming season 13. That is even more exciting because plays right into the spookiness of all of it.”

Returning alongside Bennett are some of series’ fan-favorite, classic components, including pumpkin carving, cake decorating and sugar ing — but be prepared for shocks galore, unlucky season promises some new and exciting surprises along the way

The series’ first three episodes act as the “Halloween Wars” qualifying rounds, with Bennett asking the teams to complete a series of increasingly difficult tasks, including the “Monster Mashup,” where each group must choose two of the scariest monsters imaginable and meld both into one ghastly creation; a round based on the 1973 classic film, “The Exorcist;” and a fairy tale-based challenge that just may lead to one team’s “happily ever after,” as this season’s judges — Aarti Sequeira (Season 6 winner of “Food Network Star”) and Shinmin Li (“Holiday Wars”) — eliminate one bunch of bakers, carvers and confectioners each round.

Jonathan Bennett from “Halloween Wars”

Following episodes will be split into two challenges: the “Small Scare,” where teams have 45 minutes to complete an edible interpretation of a spooky theme, and the “Spine Chiller,” where the time limit is extended to five hours, allowing for ultimate creativity Keeping to theme for this 13th season, this year’s teams feature some of the show’s spookiest puns yet, with names like Team Sweet Screams, Pumpkins Up the Volume, Snax Sabbath, Spice Ghouls, Pumpkin Posse, Trick or Sweet and more, with each team hopeful to prove their deliciously deadly talent in the kitchen and win the final, $50,000 grand prize. Season 13 of “Halloween Wars” begins Sunday, Sept. 17, on Food Network.

BEST KEVIN COSTNER MOVIES

9 p.m. (FOOD) Diners, DriveIns and Dives A Nashville joint is adding crunch to their signature wrap.

9:30 p.m. (FOOD) Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives A smokehouse in New Hampshire puts a new spin on meatloaf.

10 p.m. (FOOD) Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Guy visits a butcher y, a diner and an inn-turned-gastropub.

“Field of Dreams”

“The Big Chill” (1983): If you don’t remember Costner being in this comedy-drama, you’re forgiven … since, in the final edit, only his arm and his hair have significant parts during the opening credits. He was cast as Alex, the suicidal friend the other central characters mourn, but director Lawrence Kasdan cut him out of most of the film.

“The Untouchables” Costner successfully reasur y man Eliot Ness, who pursues mobster Al Capone t De Niro) and partners with a veteran Chicago cop (Oscar winner Sean Conner y) in director Brian De Palma’s film. “Field of Dreams” (1989): Ask any man what his favorite Costner movie is, and chances are good that this baseball-diamond-building drama is the one. The picture encompasses many great performances, also including those of Ray Liotta and Burt Lancaster

“Dances With Wolves” (1990): Costner became a film auteur, directing and starring in this Oscar winner about a Civil War lieutenant who truly goes his own way. With his multiple accolades here, Costner shot to the top of virtually ever y producer and casting director’s “want” list.

“The Bodyguard” (1992): It certainly isn’t the most profound movie ever made, but it sure is entertaining. Costner plays a former Secret Ser vice man hired to protect a threatened superstar (Whitney Houston), and sparks fly between them.

“Message in a Bottle” (1999): A ver y sensitive Costner helps to boost Nicholas Sparks’ stor y of a couple (with the thenbilled Robin Wright Penn as the other half) brought together by a discovered love letter

“The Company Men” (2010): Costner does fine work as the sympathetic brother-in-law of a newly downsized corporate employee (Ben Affleck).

“Man of Steel” (2013): Costner is perfectly rustic and heartfelt as Jonathan Kent, the Earth father of the traveler from Kr ypton who will become known to the world as Superman.
