Dean Mar tin and others “Roast” fellow celebrities c lassic corner

Dean Mar tin and Tony Bennett in

The Friars Club also was famous for staging such events, but “ The Dean Mar tin Celebrity Roast” brought home no-holds-barred testimonials to stars. Catchy Comedy continues a weekend festival of the specials Sunday, Aug. 6, and it’s interesting to see how many talents were regulars on the dais, whether they had direct connections to the celebrity of the hour or not. Think in terms of Ruth Buzzi, Jimmie Walker, Foster Brooks, impressionist Rich Little and the king of ’Roast” regulars, Don Rickles. Among those who are feted during the marathon are Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, Angie Dickinson, Lucille Ball, Michael Landon (who actually was honored at a couple of the “Roasts,” including the very last one staged), Sammy Davis Jr., Betty White, Jack Klugman – and Telly Savalas, whose frequent “ What am I doing here?” looks are mar velously unmistakable.

After decades of competitive reality shows committed to finding the most talented singers, dancers, performers and the like, CBS launches an unscripted series dedicated to the fans — well, to the “superfans,” to be exact. Honoring the most loyal of six celebrities’ fan bases, the network’s new competition series tests a group of contestants’ knowledge in exchange for a chance to meet their idols up close and personal. Originally scheduled to arrive in June, “Superfan” premieres Wednesday, Aug. 9, on CBS, the CBS app and Paramount+.

Created by executive producers Keltie Knight (“Footloose,” 2011) and Jodi Roth (“Inappropriate Jeff,” 2014), “Superfan” makes use of a classic game show model — think BBC’s “Mastermind,” if you’ve seen it — testing players on a smattering of facts about the musician they all share a love for Each week, beginning with LL Cool J (“NCIS: Los Angeles”), one music star is welcomed to perform and look on as their biggest fans settle the No.1-fan question once and for all.

The series has a six-episode freshman season, and it is hosted by Canadian TV personality Knight and Canadian-American former NFL wide receiver Nate Burleson (“The NFL Today”). It features one new musical celebrity per episode, and following LL Cool J’s inaugural episode, the weekly guests of honor include: Canadian country music legend Shania Twain (“That Don’t Impress Me Much,” 1997); Cuban-American pop sensation Gloria Estefan (“Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” 1987); Alabama-born country foursome Little Big Town (“Pontoon,” 2012); rapper and Miami native Pitbull (“I Know You Want Me,” 2009); and Tennesseean singer/songwriter Kelsea Ballerini (“Miss Me More,” 2017).

As the artist’s fans compete across several rounds to figure out who will come out as the one and only “superfan,” they each get the opportunity to interact with their favorite artist, thus making their music fandom dreams come true just by taking part. By the end of each episode, the artist in the spotlight will crown their No 1 fan and present to them a unique set of prizes.

While discussing his excitement about co-hosting the new show, Burleson stated that “Superfan” “perfectly captures the energy of concert vibes and competition,” adding that “ as a host, I get to meet music icons and watch everyday fans compete for a dream prize.”

As far as the at-home audience’s interaction with the fun goes, Burleson notes, “You will dance, laugh and even cry by the end of each episode, but more importantly, you’ll walk away a superfan yourself.”

And Burleson isn’t the only person delighted to be taking the game show genre to new heights; creators Knight and Roth also expressed their own love for the series in the CBS news release.

“We felt like it was time that fan bases across all genres of music get the love and recognition they deserve,” the pair said.

“’Superfan’ gives celebrated musical artists a chance to honor their fans by engaging with them one-on-one and surprising them with once-in-a-lifetime prize packages. It’s a feel-good show that everyone will enjoy.”

more retro rewinds

“9 to 5” (Cinemax, Sunday, Aug. 6): Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton – the latter also scoring one of her biggest music hits off the film – had a huge success with this often hilarious 1980 workplace satire, casting them as secretaries who decide to even the score with a chauvinistic boss (Dabney Coleman). The picture has serious points to make, and it does so while embedding them within widely accessible humor

“What’s Love Got to Do With It” (Hulu, streaming): Cited in almost every report on Tina Turner’s recent passing, this 1993 drama boasts a strong performance by Angela Bassett – who will receive an honorary Oscar at the next Academy Awards – as the dynamic music icon who overcame hardships to emerge as, and remain, one of the most influential women in her profession. Laurence Fishburne also does memorable work as Ike Turner.

“The Tender Trap” (Turner Classic Movies, Sunday, Aug. 6): Though this 1955 romantic comedy is part of an all-day tribute to Debbie Reynolds during TCM’s annual “Summer Under the Stars” month, one of its most distinctive aspects belongs to another performer – Frank Sinatra, who opens the film by crooning the title song while walking toward the camera backed only by a panorama of blue sky It’s a very striking, still enthralling opening to the picture.

Dinner for two: ‘Love at First Bite’ tosses singles into culinar y bootcamp

and the contestants

chomps

Network, Sunday, Aug. 6.

The eight-episode season brings chefs Anne Burrell (“Beat Bobby Flay”) and Jeff Mauro (“The Kitchen”) to the kitchen, asking them each to lead a team of fun-loving singles – all self-proclaimed “kitchen disasters” – through a relentless and life-changing culinary boot camp As Burrell and Mauro teach the contestants the skills required to master the kitchen once and for all, they hope to turn them, as Food Network says, from “cooking duds into kitchen studs.”

In its description for the series, Food Network explains: “The recruits not only learn how to make date-friendly dishes like sushi, spicy wontons and classic French pastries, they also go head-to-head in romantic dating-inspired challenges like the Cupid Games, the Bagel-orette and the Inferno Zone. In the end, only the most improved recruit left standing is awarded a $25,000 grand prize, bragging rights for their mentor and the ability to add “great cook” to their dating profile.

The network continued with a deep dive into the season’s first episode: “Before picking teams, Anne and Jeff kick off the com-

bestof ...

skills, , in the main dish challenge, the teams learn to make duck paired with a fruit sauce. After assessing everyone’s skills, Anne and Jeff reveal a unique twist when choosing their teams. ”

During following episodes, these culinary (and relationship) hopefuls are introduced to some of the classic dishes of Italy, take a lesson on hand-pulling made-from-scratch noodles with chef Victor Huang and compete in a dazzling, Las Vegas-inspired challenge, recreating an over-the-top dish without a recipe.

In the grand finale — a double date of its own, with the two final episodes airing back-to-back on Sunday, Sept. 10 — the two “ most improved” chefs put their newfangled know-how to the test as they are asked to serve a three-course, restaurant-quality meal to a panel of expert judges, including chef Hawa Hassan, Christian Petroni (“Food Network Star”) and Chris Scott (“Top Chef ”). Whoever can serve the most date-worthy meal will go on to win it all.

With twists, turns and romance in abundance, “Worst Cooks in America: Love at First Bite” premieres Sunday, Aug. 6, on Food Network.

STEVE MARTIN MOVIES

“The Jerk” (1979): Reiner’s direction, Martin – who returns in the third season of “Only Murders in the Building” Tuesday, Aug. 8, on Prime Video – broke into movie stardom in a big way as a homebound simpleton who inadvertently becomes a worldly tycoon.

“All of Me” (1984): Reteaming with director Reiner, Martin does complicated and hilarious work — in tandem with Lily Tomlin — as an attorney who inherits a deceased client’s spirit, literally.

“Three Amigos!” (1986): Martin, Chevy Chase and Steve Martin play actors who become a cut-rate “Magnificent Seven” to save oppressed Mexican villagers.

“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” (1988): Martin and Michael Caine make a great team as con men who compete over an heiress (Glenne Headly) and her money.

“Parenthood” (1989): Less serious than the most recent series based on it, director Ron Howard’s tale of family relations features Martin as the head of the clan.

“L.A. Story” (1991): A TV weatherman (Martin, who also wrote the film) tries to win a reporter’s (Victoria Tennant) heart — with help from a talking billboard — in this fanciful comedy

“HouseSitter” (1992): Martin’s facial reactions are ever ything as he plays a homeowner whose dwelling is invaded secretly by a crasher (Goldie Hawn).

“Bowfinger” (1999): A terrific Martin plays the calculating title filmmaker, who decides to shoot a movie without its star’s (Eddie Murphy) knowledge.

“Cheaper by the Dozen” (2003): Very much in “Father of the Bride” mode, Martin still makes a warm father figure in this remake of the true tale of a large family

“Shopgirl” (2005): In an adaptation of his novel, Martin is affecting as the wealthy older man who vies with a slacker (Jason Schwartzman) for the heart of said shopgirl (Claire Danes).

“It’s Complicated” (2009): An absolutely charming Martin makes a real option for a divorcee’s (Mer yl Streep) affections while her ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) also courts her anew
