There was a TV, and every channel was in the language of Indonesia except for two that spoke English. One had a soccer game; the other had ‘Cast Away,’ no lie. And I watched it from start to finish.”
Aspiring Nashville-based countr y-music artist Kenzi Whittington is the first fellow castaway Gibbons makes contact with. “No one coached me on whether I should turn right or turn left or get in the water or whatever,” he says. “I could have just sat there the whole time, and I chose to make a move – and all of a sudden, I crossed paths with Kenzi. And thank goodness. Being so alone, and not being a sur vivalist, I wasn’t prepared for any of it.”
Whittington maintains “it’s so funny” to look back at her “Castaways” tenure now: “It was really confusing, because I was in such a beautiful place and I felt so awful physically there. I wondered if it was worth it, and now that I’m back in my everyday routine, I think it was so worth it. What a life-changing thing. It’s crazy to see familiar faces and things like starting a fire, and it’s almost like I’m reliving it. It’s really emotional for me to watch the footage.”

“Beauty and the Beast” and “Smallville” were based in fantasy, so how does it feel to be doing a real-world show now with “Burden of Truth”?
I love it! I love being able to play in the realm of reality Doing fantastical work is fun, and the stakes are always life-or-death, but I haven’t been able to do this kind of drama in a while.
Being able to deal with what people actually deal with in their lives day-to-day, without monsters or superheroes, is really gratifying for me as an actor and as a stor yteller It’s the way really want to reach people.
As both the star and an executive producer, what did it mean to film the first season of the Canada-based “Burden of ruth” without having yet made a U.S. sale of the show?
We didn’t want to par tner with a U.S. network at the star t. A lot of shows in Canada will do that, and that means you get a lot more money that can go into the shooting of the show We did this show totally on a Canadian budget, which is small compared to an American series, but I think it looks beautiful.
ou recently started filming Season 2 of “Burden of Truth.” Do you think it picks up naturally from where Season 1 ends?
It kind of reminds me in some ways – and I don’t necessarily mean to put it on the same level by making this reference – of “Broadchurch.” The first season really does conclude, but there are many things that need to be finished later on. You can follow the community and the people to see how their lives are af fected as they have to deal with other things.

A: He’s Jay Hernandez, who has worked principally in feature films since being a cast member of the weekend NBC children’s show “Hang Time.” (He later married that show’s lead actress, Daniella Deutscher.)

A creativity battle is on in the ‘Ultimate Summer Cook-Off ’
Some days on set are better than others.
For Eddie Jackson, host of Food Network’s Sunday tournament “Ultimate Summer Cook-Off,” a highlight came in the episode that airs this week, when he and judges Damaris Phillips and Jamika Pessoa got to chow down after the five remaining contestants each prepared a six-foot-long lobster roll.
That’s 30 feet of lobster meat, if you’re scoring at home.
“That’s a school bus,” Jackson notes. “... Every one of these lobster rolls is going to be totally different, (the chef ’s) own take of what a lobster roll is, coming from their background, their culinary POV. And so it was probably the craziest challenge that I gave them, was to make a six-foot lobster roll. It’s the same size as me. ”
In the four-episode series, chefs of disparate backgrounds must take on two rounds of summer culinary challenges that test their skill and creativity, from hot dogs and hamburgers to lobster rolls and tropical fruit, to determine whose dish best exemplifies what summer is about. The winner takes home a $25,000 grand prize.
Jackson, a skilled barbecue chef and owner of a Houston food truck park, was impressed by what he saw – and tasted.
“We did an amazing job of casting and bringing in some amazing chefs from all different backgrounds,” he says. “We have classically trained chefs, we have chefs that cook on food trucks

. And on the flip side of that, we have someone that has a Vietnamese and Thai background, so everything is fish sauce. So it was an interesting cast and (interesting) being able to see what they could do with their interpretation of barbecuing and grilling and hanging out in the backyard.”
What book are you currently reading?
“I’m currently reading two books, actually I’m reading a book by my friend James Briscione, it’s his newest cookbook called ‘Flavor Matrix.’ And the second book I’m reading is by a guy I used to play football with for the Patriots, Benjamin Watson, and he has a book called ‘Under Our Skin.’ ”
What is your next project?
“My next project that’ll be coming out around Christmastime is ‘Christmas Cookie Challenge,’ which I’ve already filmed. But my cookbook will be coming out spring of 2019.”
When was your last vacation, where and why?
“I haven’t had a vacation in over a year but I’m planning on going to Jamaica in October to hang out for seven days because I need it.”
