Powwow to honor veterans

Eufaula Indian Club event to feature competition from ‘Tiny Tots to Golden Agers’

Eufaula Indian Club Powwow and Homecoming attracts dancers of all ages.

The free powwow runs Saturday and Sunday at the Eastside Ballpark on Lake Eufaula. Gourd Dancing on both days begins at 2 p.m. with Grand Entry beginning at 8 p.m. both days.

Powwow coordinator JayDee Tiger said the event will feature dancing competitions from Tiny Tots to Golden Agers.

“Our Tiny Tots go down to newborns,” Tiger said. “Sometimes the mamas will bring them in. Or there is a beginning walker and the parents or grandparents will bring them in.”

Many of the children come in regalia, though some of the girls might wear shawls, she said.

The Golden Agers competition dancing, immediately after Saturday’s Grand Entry, features dancers aged 60 or older, she said. Winners of the men’s and women’s dances each get $300.

Blues artists ready to play Dusk ‘til Dawn on Labor Day Weekend

Festival runs to the wee hours of Labor Day morning

If you go

Don’t worry if you miss main stage acts at the Dusk ‘til Dawn Blues Festival this weekend.

Stay up late hear them jam inside the Down Home Blues Club.

The festival, which runs from Friday to the wee hours of Labor Day morning in Rentiesville, truly lives up to its name.

Festival organizer Selby Minner said the festival traditionally goes from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day.

“Just about all of the headliners come in and play indoors,” Minner said. “Indigenous will play 9:30 (Friday night) on the main stage, then come inside around 2 a.m.”

Similarly, Little Ed and the Blues Imperials play 9:30 p.m Saturday, then play again around 2 a.m., Minner said.

Tulsa blues guitarist Eric Walker said the late night fans make up a looser crowd than earlier in the evening.

“You see a lot of people coming

out and jamming,” Walker said. “It’s more loose and laid back. It has an authentic juke joint kind of vibe.”

Versatile bluesman Johnny Rawls also said he loves the late night jams.

“Three a.m. is the best,” Rawls said. “The joint is jumping. People from all walks of life are out there having fun.”

Rawls performs 11 p.m. Friday on the main stage before going inside after midnight.

A Mississippi native, Rawls expresses his blues through guitar, bass, keyboard, vocals — even through behind the scenes work, such as producing, songwriting and horn arranging.

According to his bio, Rawls has performed at the Chicago Blues Festival, the Russian River Blues Festival, King Biscuit Blues Festival, as well as festivals in Poland and Sweden.

Yet, he said he always comes to Rentiesville.

“It’s just the people attending and the spirit of D.C.,” Rawls said.

D.C. is D.C. Minner, a Rentiesville native who went on to blues greatness in California. Minner and his wife, Selby, returned to Rentiesville and established the Dusk ‘til Dawn Blues Festival in 1990.

D.C. Minner died in 2008.

Rawls said he met D.C. Minner a year before the festival started.

“We had a lot in common,” Rawls recalled.

“We like some of the same music, played at some of the same places.”

In 2016, National Geographic noted this juke joint vibe when it named Dusk ‘til Dawn one of the “10 Awesome Music Festivals to Check Out This Summer.”

The magazine’s website said, “If you really want to get off the beaten path, check out this all-night blues festival in tiny Rentiesville, one of Oklahoma’s few surviving historically all-black towns. Night owls dig the blues from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. for three days straight.”

This year, more than 27 acts are slated to perform, Selby Minner said.

The group Indigenous headlines Native American Night on Friday. Lead guitarist Mato Nanji was born and reared on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. Nanji is known for his versatility.

He has played with the Experience Hendrix tour since 2002, evoking the memory of 1960s guitar great Jimi Hendrix.

Minner said Indigenous played at one of the early festivals in the late 1990s — before they hit it big.

Minner said Creek Nation casinos in Eufaula and Checotah helped bring Indigenous to Rentiesville this year.

Acts perform on three venues, the main stage, indoor club stage and the back porch.

Lady Dancer is Doni Grace Pewo, a Kiowa/ Apache from Anadarko. A woman’s buckskin contest will be Sunday night to honor the Vickie Kaulay Tiger, princess of the original powwow in 1969.

“My mother wanted to start it as a way to honor Vietnam veterans coming home,” Tiger said.  She recalled how her mother, Harriette Scott Tiger, set up contests to help veterans who needed money.

The powwow started up again in 2013, she said. The event continues to honor veterans.

“The emcee asks the audience if they know of anyone away in a war or who came home,” Tiger said,

The powwow draws hundreds of people each Labor Day weekend.

“It is the only powwow in Oklahoma located by a lake,” she said, adding that people come from other states, including Missouri, Arizona, New Mexico.

There also will be vendors for food, arts and crafts.

Art a big part of Cherokee National Holiday

Cherokee artists tell their story through work

Art is a reflection of culture, and during the Cherokee National Holiday over Labor Day weekend, visitors will find exceptional art to view and purchase.

Two separate shows are hosted during the annual event: the 22nd Annual Cherokee Homecoming Art Show and Sale at the Cherokee Heritage Center and the Holiday Show at the Tahlequah Municipal Armory. Artists may have pieces in both art shows.

The Cherokee Homecoming Art Show and Sale runs Aug. 26-Sept. 30, and is a juried competition for Cherokee artists only. Work is entered in one of 10 categories to compete for prize money, totaling more than $11,000. Artists must first submit a photo of work(s) to be entered in the show, then the juried pieces are judged for prizes.

Callie Chunestudy, museum curator, said the show’s being juried ensures it has the highest quality of work.

“People should come see the show to buy the best of the best in Cherokee art and experience what living Cherokee artists are doing today and how they are telling our story,” said Chunestudy.

The Homecoming Art Show provides Cherokee

artists a venue to show their work for the thousands of people who come to Cherokee Heritage Center during the Holiday, as well as those who visit throughout the month. Most of the pieces are available for purchase.

Prize categories are: Traditional Basketry, Traditional Pottery, Traditional Arts (weapons, pipes, marbles, etc.), Contemporary Basketry, Contemporary Pottery, Sculpture, Visual

Arts (paintings, drawings, photography, etc.), Jewelry, Beadwork and Textiles.

“I think artists enjoy this show because it’s different than a regular market and competition,” said Chunestudy, explaining there is no booth to set up and the work is on display for more than a month. “It gives a lot of people the chance to experience their style and take on

She enjoys seeing new artists come in, and watching established artists grow and evolve year after year.

“Supporting artists is my passion, and I love helping to share their art with the world,” said Chunestudy.

Since it’s an all-Cherokee show, it is near and dear to the mission of the Cherokee Heritage Center.

“Preserving and promoting our culture by encouraging our artists to tell our story through visual means is our honor and duty,” she said.

Cherokee Heritage Center hours for the Homecoming Art Show are Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $8.50 for adults. On the first Saturday of each month, federally recognized Cherokee citizens and a guest receive free admission.

are reviewed by one person rather than a jury, and the show only runs the three days of CN holiday.

Marie Smith, art show coordinator, said people will see tribal culture – Cherokee and other federally recognized tribes – from artists just starting out, to very well-known names.

The show is run not only by volunteers, family, friends, and community members. It is also staged in conjunction with different departments of the Cherokee Nation that allow their employees to volunteer their time and efforts to make this show and the holiday a success, according to Smith, also housing supervisor with the Commerce Department of the Cherokee Nation.

“Art is the heartbeat of tribal culture,” said Smith.

About 159 art pieces by 97 adults, and 53 pieces by 37 youth artists, will be on display.

There are nine adult categories: pottery, painting, drawings and graphics, photography, sculpture, baskets, textiles, diverse arts, and jewelry and three youth categories: Youth ages

1-8; youth 9-13; and youth 14-18.

“This is the largest youth group of artists we have ever had and largest group of artwork pieces,” Smith said.

Art includes drums, music, and visual arts, she said.

“You will be able to experience all of that at the Cherokee Holiday by visiting the visual arts such as the art shows, quilt show, powwow, film festivals, arts and crafts booths, and then listening to the music of the powwow, fiddlers contest, Cherokee Youth Choir and gospel singing,” said Smith. “It includes the grace and talent of those playing sports and the music of their feet, darts hitting targets, arrows whizzing to the cornstalks and the stomping of dancer’s feet.”

The Holiday Show will be held Friday-Sunday, Sept. 1-3, at the Tahlequah Municipal Armory Center, 100 S. Water St. The hours are: Friday, 1-8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Art will be for sale. Cash or credit cards/debit cards, except American Express, will be accepted.

Expect daytime TV that says something from ‘Steve’

M emo from Steve Harvey (no, not “that” one): His new talk show will aim to bring a late-night sensibility to daytime.

The omnipresent personality drops his last name from the title of “Steve” – which premieres in nationwide syndication Tuesday, Sept. 5 (check local listings) – but the series still will be quintessential Harvey, with his comedic and pointed takes on a variety of topics. He’ll surely have famous guests, especially since the program is based in Los Angeles instead of its predecessor’s Chicago, but he vows they’ll be there for reasons other than to hawk their latest projects.

Harvey also says he won’t have standard daytime-talk segments.

“People don’t care about the Coupon Queen no more,” he maintains. “You put on a daytime show and there’s a cooking segment, and the host stands around, and they like everything they cook. Who the hell likes everything they eat, that some strange person you don’t even know is cooking?”

With his many other current television jobs, Harvey foresees “Steve” as an amalgam of all of them: “When I’m on ‘Little Big Shots,’ I’m dealing with kids, which I’m really good at because I got seven of them myself. And then I do just enough jokes that’s right over the kids’ heads that just slams their parents in

the mouth, so everybody gets to have a good time; I take that with what I do on ‘Family Feud.’ (And) I take that with what (I did) years ago on ‘Showtime at the Apollo.’ I’m going to combine it.”

While he wants “Steve” to be funny, Harvey intends to stand by some serious topics that long have been causes of his. He notes, “I’ve championed women on my show ... whether it’s dating, whether it’s advice, whether it’s just talking about how powerful and wonderful they are. I’m not going to stop doing that on this show. If you take that and you put real funny on top of that, you got a chance at something really special.”

And about that nowinfamous memo, in which Harvey told the

Steve Harvey launches his new talk show “Steve” in nationwide syndication Tuesday.

staff members of his previous talk show not to approach him without an appointment?

“I learned two things from that e-mail,” he says now. “I can’t write, and I should never write. It was something I wrote a year ago. Somebody didn’t get a job coming to L.A. (for the new show) and they got (angry). And I was OK until I saw it on CNN. And that’s when I knew I was in a lot of trouble.”

“I’m not really a meanspirited guy at all,” insists Harvey. “I’m really a congenial guy, but it’s kind of like if you go home every day and all your kids is in the kitchen waiting on you and start hammering you, you just need a moment. That’s all it was. It’s really not that big a deal. I thought it was cute. You all didn’t, but ... .”

Can the ever-shaky relationship of the central characters on “You’re the Worst” get even worse?

Oh, yes.

Sufficient evidence is supplied by the ever-edgy FXX comedy’s fourth-season premiere Wednesday, Sept. 6, an hour-long tale that shows how Gretchen and Jimmy (played by Aya Cash and Chris Geere) are dealing – or not – with their breakup. The AWOL Jimmy finds refuge in trying to help some colorful senior citizens, while Gretchen drives her best friend Lindsay (Kether Donohue) not-somildly crazy by becoming a constant, high-strung presence ... even at Lindsay’s business meetings.

“Kether kept saying, ‘I’m so boring in this scene,’ and I kept saying, ‘I’m so overacting,’ ” Cash laughs of their work together in the Season 4 debut. The arguable high point is Cash emulating the ultra-speedy recitation of the lyrics of a certain song: “I did not know ‘One Week’ by Barenaked Ladies. And if you did, I’m so sorry. It’s still a recurring nightmare for me.”

As dryly humorous as her “You’re the Worst” alter ego is, Cash looks back fondly on her earlier television work on such shows as “The Newsroom,” recognizing that her current role associates her more closely with a certain type of character. Still, she appreciates the challenges and the freedom “You’re the Worst” creator and executive producer Stephen Falk continues to provide her.

During the second season, the revelation of Gretchen’s clinical depression became a much-discussed aspect. Reasoning that

“obviously, that’s not something that goes away,” Cash notes that “you can see the ripples of that in almost everything. I think this season, you’ll see Gretchen in more of a manic state than a depressive state in response to the break-up. We’re not talking about it in the way that we did in Season 2, but hopefully, you’ll see it reverberate.”

‘Bobby and Damaris’ highlight a smorgasbord of original culinary programming

As the Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer, the food enthusiast gets some new programming this week to distract from the fact that cold weather is not all that far off.

First and foremost is the premiere of “The Bobby and Damaris Show” Sunday, Sept. 3, on Food Network, which finds Bobby Flay and Damaris Phillips in the kitchen and chatting up a storm as they prepare food and drink for weekend get-togethers. In the opening episode of this daytime series, Phillips mixes up a mango bellini while Flay heads to his outdoor kitchen to prepare some Mediterranean grilled chicken with green olive salsa verde and grilled new potatoes with smoked paprika vinaigrette. Phillips’ grilled citrus icebox pie puts a coda to the meal. Yum!

The same day on Cooking Channel is the Season 7 premiere of “The Best Thing I Ever Ate,” in which more of the country’s most famous chefs and food stars discuss what and where they like to eat when they’re picking up the tab. And on Travel Channel Sunday is the sixth season premiere of “Food Paradise,” which heads to New Orleans to check out Cajun and Creole cuisine as well as local favorites such as hot jazz snacks, bayou-fresh catfish and the famous Sno-Blizz.

Keeping with the local favorites theme is the Tuesday, Sept. 5, edition of Travel’s “Bizarre Foods,” which sees host Andrew Zimmern retracing Juan Ponce de Leon’s route down the Florida coast as he samples comestibles such as powdered Key West

The next day on Cooking Channel, “Cheap Eats” host Ali Khan’s quest to eat for a day on $35 takes him to Detroit, where he consumes dishes such as cheesy smothered breakfast potatoes, a pizza topped with hot dogs and a blueberry goat cheese basil mini pie. Pass the antacid.

Friday, Sept. 8, on Food Network is the season finale of “Guy’s Family Road Trip,” in which Guy Fieri harvests oysters for a pop-up dinner in Alabama and feasts on frog legs and fried alligator in the Florida Everglades. Adventurous eaters take note.

If your tastes lean to the more genteel, the Friday episode of Cooking’s “Heston’s Fantastical Food” finds host Heston Blumenthal celebrating the British tradition of the tea break by brewing tea for an entire town in a 16-foot kettle and creating the world’s largest packet of biscuits.

And on Saturday, Sept. 9, on PBS (check local listings), “Moveable Feast With Fine Cooking” brings host Curtis Stone by seaplane to the Pacific Northwest to learn how to harvest mussels and collaborate on a regional spread that includes grilled whole salmon with Walla Walla onions and fava leaves, steamed mussels and a spiced mussel and saffron soup, finished off with a Washington state rhubarb cake. “Let Me Die a Nun,” vimeo.com/album/4417214

This new six-part comedy series from writer/director Sarah Salovaara follows adventures of a soon-to-be nun (played by stand-up comic Ana Fabrega) whose life is turned upside down when she realizes she’s a lesbian. Also in her orbit are the object of her affection (Hari Nef) and her Jewish stalker (Carl Krantz). Brian Richardson, Eleanore Pienta, Susan Varon and Zia Anger also star.

The Yankees of the 1920s and ’50s. The Packers of the 1960s. The Bulls of the 1990s.

In the annals of greatest sports dynasties, the New England Patriots of the last 15 years certainly fit in with that group. Boasting 14 playoff appearances, seven Super Bowl appearances and five league titles over that span, the Patriots’ dynasty is the longest in NFL history and arguably the most dominant in any sport. And given the right NFL package or city of residence, we get to see it in action every week.

Tom Brady and his teammates open defense of their 2016 league title when they take to the turf at Gillette Field in Foxborough, Mass., against Alex Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs. NBC will have live coverage of the NFL’s 2017 Kickoff game Thursday, Sept. 7.

The scary thing is, it’s quite possible the Patriots are better than the team that mounted a 25-point comeback last February in Super Bowl LI to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28. True, Brady is now 40, an age where most quarterbacks have long since settled into retirement and/or a broadcasting career, but he’s shown no signs of slowing down, as his 3,554 yards passing and 112.2 rating in 2016 will attest.

And now he has a few new weapons at his disposal in 2017, among them wide receiver Brandin Cooks, whom the Pats acquired from the New Orleans Saints during the offseason; and tight end Rob Gronkowski, who missed the last month of the regular season

“Meowllennials,” www.youtube.com/ playlist?listPL6vHDRRkctoG6Q_YRE85w4U6rMsnW44YT

What if rescued kittens acted like millennials? That is the premise of this new series from Evite project manager Julian Clark and the Los Angeles cat shelter Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats, that aims to prove that today’s rescued felines are so much more than fun accessories. And if you live in the L.A. area and like what you see, all the kittens featured in the series are available for adoption through the shelter.

and all of the postseason with a back injury. Add in cornerback Stephon Gilmore (a free agent signee from the Buffalo Bills) and defensive end Kony Ealy, who comes from the Carolina Panthers via trade, and one gets the feeling the AFC is New England’s to lose.

As for those that might challenge the Pats in the conference, the team they’re opening the season against, the defending West champion Chiefs, could be a factor. Alex Smith runs a ball-control offense and the defense bends but doesn’t break. Clearly, this is a team that doesn’t beat itself.

Also in the mix is the defending North champion Pittsburgh Steelers, assuming quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is healthy and clicking with wide receiver Antonio Brown and running back Le’Veon Bell. The Tennessee Titans, the South champs that boast quarterback Marcus Mariota and a dynamic running game, could be poised for a breakout year. And don’t count out the Oakland Raiders, who loaded up on defense in the draft and coaxed running back Marshawn Lynch out of retirement to give quarterback Derek Carr another weapon.

In the NFC, the Falcons have to be considered the favorites, given their high-octane offense led by quarterback Matt Ryan and their hunger to get back to the title game after coming so close in February. Tom Brady

2) In what facility was it first held?

3) Who were the first singles champions?

At 40, Brady still defines the NFL

When non-football fans think of the NFL, the first image in their minds is likely that of Tom Brady. Like it or not, he is the face of the NFL. Brady, and the reigning Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, kick off the NFL season Thursday, Sept. 7 on NBC when they host the Kansas City Chiefs. Brady, who turned 40 a month ago, continues to defy gravity on the football field. He played in all 16 games each season from 2009-15, as well as the 12 games he was eligible for last season after serving the questionable four-game “deflategate” suspension. Of course, his legend reached new status in Super Bowl LI when he brought the Pats back from a 25-point deficit to tie the Atlanta Falcons, and then characteristically orchestrated an eight-play, 75-yard drive that ended in the game-winning touchdown. With the victory, Brady joined Charles Haley as the only NFL player to win five Super Bowls. His 43 pass completions in 62 attempts for 466 passing yards were all Super Bowl records. Still, Brady’s best story may be how he came to the NFL in first place. A late-round draft pick, he spent his rookie season in 2000 on the sidelines but continued to climb the depth chart. By 2001 he was Drew Bledsoe’s backup, and when Bledsoe went down early in the season, Brady got his chance. New England beat the St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl that year, and Tom Brady has been a household name ever since.

MAKING DIY FUN AND FUNNY ON YOUTUBE’S

‘THREADBANGER’

Hosts of “ThreadBanger”

Rob Czar and Corinne Leigh

Amid the recent explosion of DIY shows on the internet, “ThreadBanger” hosts and spouses Rob Czar and Corinne Leigh had to find a way to make their YouTube channel stand out.

And the best way to do that, they realized, was to screw up. Big time. And be funny about it.

“A lot of DIY channels will show you the process and these perfect steps,” Czar explains, “and they’ll make it look all perfect and spend days on it getting it right, getting shots of it and the right angles and the right lighting. We will show you all the failures, we will show you all of the terrible sides of the project, how it really tastes, how it really looks.”

Be it glow-in-the-dark doughnuts, a mozzarella shot glass or sewing an entire wedding dress, or hacks such as using a shoe to open a wine bottle or white bread to clean up broken glass, the couple endeavor to determine if they’re legitimate and doable by the average person. And if they’re not, they’re more than happy to have them fail.

Sometimes spectacularly so, such as the bath bomb made from real explosives. For this, Czar drove to a fireworks shop in a nearby state to get the firepower necessary to make a big bang.

“I just figured: Why hasn’t anyone done an actual bath bomb with like explosives in it?” he recalls. “So I constructed an actual bath bomb, which we then got a clawfoot tub and put it out in the middle of a field and did our own kind of experiments with blowing up bath bombs inside bathtubs.”

“And I end up losing a hand in that episode,” he adds, joking of course.

The point, says Czar, is to show not only how these projects are done but also what could go wrong if they’re not done right. And if a little fake (and sometimes real) blood gets the idea across, all the better.

For their next project – ideas for which frequently come from viewer requests – the couple will take on the renovation of their recently purchased home in Asheville, N.C., having no construction experience, little DIY skill and only online videos to guide them through.

“HGTV makes it look so easy that we figure we can just do it ourselves,” Czar says. “A lot of our shows have ‘versus’ in the titles, so it’s ‘Man Versus Pin,’ ‘Corinne Versus Cooking.’ And so the new one is ‘Man Versus House,’ where we’ll be taking the hammers and renovating and demolitioning and ... doing all the stuff ourselves and crossing our fingers that it comes out all right.”
