Musician and history teacher Brent Giddens said he’d like to teach more about Elvis Presley and less about dead presidential candidates.
“People know more about Elvis than about William Jennings Bryan and the gold standard,” Giddens said, referring to a three-time presidential candidate around the turn of the 20th Century.
Class is now in session.
Giddens will share Elvis’ best work when he presents An Echo of the King, Elvis Tribute, 7 p.m. Saturday at Eufaula’s Legacy on Main Street. A dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $40 for dinner and concert, or $15 for concert only.
Giddens has performed Elvis
tributes for at least seven years. He said he was 3 years old when Elvis died 40 years ago this month.
“I listened to him with my parents,” Giddens said. “I knew I could sing like him.”
Although he wears the tight bell-bottom suits of the early 1970s Elvis, Giddens said he doesn’t try to “be Elvis.”
“I try to keep the memory alive,” he said. “Still today, if you go to Graceland, there are long lines of people wanting to see where Elvis lived. It’s something I’m very honored to do.”
Giddens, also a high school history teacher, said Elvis made a historic impact on music.
“When people first heard Elvis on the radio, they actually thought

Live crew shows what it’s like to live on World War II submarine in re-enactment

By Cathy Spaulding Phoenix Staff Writer
Expect a larger crew and more action Saturday at USS Batfish Living History Day.
Life on the World War II submarine will be re-enacted from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at War Memorial Park. Visitors also will be able to eat with crew members and officers during fundraising suppers at 6 and 7 p.m.
Batfish “captain” Correy Twilley said Saturday marks the 10th anniversary of the event. This year’s crew will be bigger than ever, he said.
“When we first started, we had three guys, and we did a little bit of

a talk,” Twilley said. “This year we will run a crew of 40 people, which is 52 percent of the original World War II crew.”
He said the living history crew will re-enact the crew’s preparation for battle and going underwater.
“This is the first time we’ll show the transition between what it was like above the water and below the water,” Twilley said.
Though the re-enactors strive for accuracy, they do not portray those who actually served in the Batfish.
“We base what we do off stories from the crew,” Twilley said. “But I do not call myself Capt. Fyfe. I would never presume to take the place of Capt. Fyfe, nor would I
ever want to.”
Capt. John K. Fyfe commanded the USS Batfish during four World War II patrols. Under his watch, the crew fired 63 torpedoes, made 19 hits, and sank 13 ships, according to the USSBatfish.com website.
War Memorial Park Executive Director Brent Trout said the re-enactment crew is made up of educators, museum workers and military personnel from across the Midwest.
Several have taken part in the Batfish living history for several years, Trout said. Some have risen up within the ranks.
“The chain of command depends on how long they’ve been involved,” he said. “Over the years

you get to see how people advance in rank — you see one guy swabbing the deck one year and over the next few years has advanced to chief.
He said crew members spend two and a half days living and working on the submarine.
“They really go into acting mode when they are on the submarine,” Trout said. “A lot of them are skilled at different crafts — welders, electrical workers.”

All food will be cooked in the submarine’s galley There will be no difference in food quality between the officers and enlisted crew.
“Traditionally, officers ate the exact same thing the crew ate,” he said.
“They really go into acting mode when they are on the submarine”
Crew members actually make minor repairs and updates on the vessel. For example, crew members helped install LED lighting, which Trout said will help the museum cut utility costs.
Following the demonstrations, visitors will have an opportunity to eat with enlisted crew members or with officers. Twilley said people can eat family style
“Submarine crews got the absolute best rations.”
Trout said veterans get free admittance to Living History Day and to the museum through August. That was made possible through a partnership between the museum and Edward Jones Investments.
“It’s exciting for us,” Trout said. “Its our way of trying to give back to those who served.”

he was African American,” he said. “Kids kind of flocked to see him.”
Elvis put passion and feeling into his music.
“He could sing anything,” Giddens said. “Rock ‘n’ Roll started with him.”
Though he sings the range of Elvis’ 20-year repertoire, Giddens has trouble pointing to a favorite song.
“There are so many great songs to pick from,” he said. “I’m more of a fan of the way he was in the 1970s.”
Giddens said he likes the 1969 song “In the Ghetto” and the 1968 song “If I Can Dream.”
“He sent that last one out as a message to the country,” Giddens said. “We were in the middle of the Vietnam War — Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy had been assassinated.”
He said he also likes Presley’s gospel songs.
“In concert, I start with the early stuff,” Giddens said. “I like taking people on a journey through Elvis’ career. I try to make the songs as close to the originals as possible.”
He said he wears a suit made by a woman in Canada.
Giddens has even competed in Elvis Extravaganzas, starting in 2010, according to Giddens’ website, oklahomaelvis.net.
Giddens teaches now at Liberty Mounds, but he has taught and coached at Webbers Falls and Braggs. He also has a country band.

From the newest program, the Penguin Project, which partners special-needs youth with others who have been in shows, to the mystery dinner theaters and other shows for the regular season, Tahlequah Community Playhouse Inc. continues to enhance the quality of life for the community through live production.
What has become a favorite tradition for the Tahlequah community began on Sept. 30, 1974.
‘‘An organizational meeting was held to create a community theater. There were 15 individuals present with officers at that first meeting,” said Patsy Clifford. “My husband [Craig] and I have been members of TCP since 1986. He is the actor, leader, and I am
the behind-the-scenes person. All are important when it comes to putting on a show.”
Bryn Smith has volunteered with TCP for eight years.
“I love that it has shown me new perspectives in nearly every capacity. I’ve met the most challenging, creative, and wonderful people I’ll likely ever meet. I’ve learned new skills and appreciate more in life than I thought I could,” Smith said. “Getting involved is fun; however, it isn’t always for the lazy.”
Auditions for “The Addams Family,” the musical comedy, were held in mid-July, and the cast prepares to open its 44th season Sept. 15-17 and 22-24. All performances are held at the Tahlequah Armory Municipal Center, 100 N. Water Ave. in Tahlequah. Rounding out the 2017-2018 season are: “The Mummy’s Claw,” Nov. 10-12 and 17-19; “I Hate Hamlet,” Feb. 9-11

A past TCP president, Smith is involved in several projects=. She attends board meetings and offers support if, when, and where she’s
able, she said.
“Personally, I love that the variety of persons involved in TCP push limits to accomplish a common goal, whether it be performing or something like fundraising,” said Smith. The community may not always consider the economic impact of the arts and live theater. Besides building materials for sets, TCP rents storage and performance spaces, solicits
items for props from local businesses, and advertises in the newspaper, according to Clifford.
“To paraphrase Dr. Andy Morgan of the Penguin Project, ‘Theatre not only provides children (and adults) a valuable recreational experience, and an opportunity to display their creative talents, but also enhances social interaction, communication skills, assertiveness and self-esteem,’”
said Clifford. “Anyone who attended the TCP Production of ‘Annie Jr.’ can attest to this statement.”
TCP, a 501(c)(3) organization, is a member of The American Association of Community Theaters, and the Oklahoma Community Theater Association. The TCP board meets the last Tuesday of the month at St. Basil’s Episcopal Church, 814 N. Vinita.

S ince “Sharknado” has been an international success, it only makes sense for the campy horror-movie series’ plot to go global, too.
Franchise star Ian Ziering has wanted that for a while, and he takes his chainsaw-wielding character Fin around the world when Syfy debuts “Sharknado 5: Global Swarming” Sunday, Aug. 6. There’s a reason for Fin’s trek: His son (Billy Barratt) with longtime love April (fellow series returnee Tara Reid) is caught in a shark-raining storm making its way from country to country, and as they pursue the boy, they encounter such figures as the Pope (played by Fabio ... really) and the Queen of England (Charo ... really, again).
The usual shooting schedule for a “Sharknado” is 18 to 20 days, and “Beverly Hills, 90210” alum Ziering reports “this one took a little longer,” due to the number of locales involved (some doubling others). “Every time we went to a new country, we did get a day or two to catch up or slow down to the time zone, but it still represented a tremendous challenge. We shot in Bulgaria, London, Rome, Tokyo and Sydney. I left home, flew east, and continued to fly east until I was back home.”
Particularly pleased to work with Dolph Lundgren – another of the new “Sharknado” co-stars who also include Olivia Newton-John (and her daughter, Chloe Lattanzi), “Saturday Night Live” veteran Chris Kattan and “American Idol” alum Clay Aiken – Ziering enjoys also
having behind-the-scenes participation in the series, “whether it’s helping find cameo stars or working with the script as we’re shooting it. The script has to stay malleable to allow for location boundaries, and in finding the words for a smooth segue from scene to scene, there’s some rewriting that has to go on. I work with the director to facilitate that. In fact, we all do.”
It helps to have a souped-up chainsaw for any “Sharknado,” and “Global Swarming” certainly offers one. “I think the heaviest one was in ‘Sharknado 2,’ ” Ziering recalls. “That was a Timber Saw that was almost 40 lbs., and that’s not something that’s easy to wield with one hand. We always look for ways to make the shark kills over the top, and the signature weapon in this

movie is a divine weapon – there’s a hint – that’s like a hybrid chainsaw. It’s got exhausts! I picked it up and I was like, ‘Oh, yeah.’ ”
Even if the entire globe seems to be the ultimate “Sharknado” destination, don’t rule out others yet to come.
“Of course, if the fans want it, there will be a ‘Sharknado 6,’ ” promises Ziering, who launched his Chainsaw Brands fashion line from his link to the series. “These have fulfilled two bucketlist items for me: Not only do I get to play an action-adventure hero in a science-fiction movie, I get to work with people I’ve been a fan of my whole life ... and with every one of these movies, I make new friends. I really have to pinch myself.”

Playing Manfred, a troubled psychic with a substance-abuse problem and bad guys on his tail who lands in a haunted backwater in NBC’s “Midnight, Texas,” presented Francois Arnaud with a smorgasbord of acting challenges.
There is the portraying of the tortured soul and all the emotions the actor must conjure to effectively do that. There is the acting against a green screen while imagining CGI-animated monsters are lunging at him. And there is the resulting slapstick –because Manfred isn’t the greatest fighter in the world.
“Unlike other roles that I’ve played in the past where the character was sort of a guy who has like extreme physical abilities or fighting skills, Manfred fights with his mind,” explains Arnaud, probably best known for his role as the brutal Cesare Borgia on the Showtime historical drama “The Borgias.” “So he’s a little clumsy actually. The first time he’s seen with a gun, he’s always dropping things and clumsiness is getting in the way of his conquering the enemy. So I was sort of attracted to that part of him and just keeping him as flawed as possible without making him sort of repulsive.”
But Arnaud ultimately views his character as someone on a journey, a guy who’s learning to transcend his own selfish tendencies while finding a sense of purpose amid the psychics, witches, monsters and ghosts of Midnight.
“I think the show is very much about this sense of community as much as it’s about fighting monsters,” he says. “For me it’s about learning to control your inner demons because ... evil is drawn to Midnight and it’s getting harder and harder to control those evil impulses within yourself. So it’s about taming the beast while accepting that it’s a part of you.”

Watch out when Seonkyoung Longest gets bored.
Indeed, when the South Korean chef and YouTube cooking host came to the States with her serviceman husband Jacob in 2009, she didn’t know what to do with herself. Living in Mississippi and then Sacramento, she didn’t have a car, a job or anything to stimulate her while her husband was away at work. So she got bored, stagnated and fell into depression.
“After I moved to the United States after I got married to my husband, it was a super-huge culture shock,” the host of such series as “Asian at Home” and “Life in Korea” explains. “I went through a lot of ... depression, and cooking helped me to work through that. And that actually made me realize who I am and what makes me happy, which is creating.”
So the former comic-book artist decided to give cooking a try. She sought the advice of her mother and mother-inlaw on how to make certain dishes, picked up techniques by watching Food Network and Cooking Channel, and began coming up with her own recipes. In 2011, she made her first video for YouTube.
Nearly six years later, her self-titled channel is approaching 500,000 subscribers, who watch her prepare everything from chicken fried rice and pad thai to a chorizo burrito and Korean pulled pork. She’s been a competitor on Season 4 of “MasterChef” and was the winner of Food Network’s “Restaurant Express.” She even launched her own restaurant in Las Vegas in 2013.
She’s certainly famous among her fans, who tend to recognize her whenever she visits a big city or shops in an Asian market. And there was even one unusual encounter aboard a commercial jet.
“Somebody went to the bathroom,” Longest recalls with a laugh, “and walking by in the aisle she just looked back at me and said, ‘I watch you on YouTube’ and she just walked by. That was like random in the airplane. It was so funny.”

What book are you currently reading?
“I listen to books a lot and right now I’m listening to ‘Be Obsessed or Be Average’ by Grant Cardone. I’m actually listening to this book for the fifth or sixth time now. It’s my favorite.”
What did you have for dinner last night?
“Volcano fried rice because I was recipe-testing. It’s just a Korean fried rice but after you fry up the rice you make the fried rice into a mountain in the pan and then pour egg as the magma (laughs). It’s like this new thing in Korea so I was recipe-testing that. I’m (hoping) to share it with everybody soon.”
What is your next project?
“I’m actually going to be in Korea this September for a few months to film in a ‘Life in Korea’ series. Because ‘Life in Korea: Season 1’ ... was one of my (early successes) and I’m really excited to go back to Korea and film more of the shows with Jacob. Because my husband is also in Korea right now, because he’s at work and I cannot wait to see him ... .”
When was your last vacation, where and why?
“Actually last Fourth of July, I went to L.A., but the thing is I don’t really take a vacation vacation where I’m doing nothing because that’s just not me.

Susan Sarandon

Ask Susan Sarandon whether she modeled her “Ray Donovan” character of Machiavellian studio head Samantha Winslow after anyone in particular, and the newest member of the cast of the acclaimed Showtime series will likely respond with a hearty laugh.
“Oh my God, if I knew anyone like this I would definitely turn them in ...,” the Oscar-winning actress exclaims. “She might be closer to some of the men who headed studios back in the old days when there were really strong personalities and not corporate people developing studios. ... She takes what she wants (and) feels life is too short to be asking for a promotion.”
BY GEORGE DICKIE
In Sam, Sarandon brings to the small screen an ambitious loner who worked her way up from the bottom and made all the right moves, including marrying an Oscar-winning director, which also made her the target of much resentment, especially among women. She can be tough but she knows what she wants, knows how to get things done and she can do it without too much conflict.
In her research of women executives in Hollywood, she found that that’s what the successful ones do.
“As a woman, we’re taught to facilitate with egos kind of on the side,” explains Sarandon, who recently bagged her fifth Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Bette Davis in FX’s “Feud.” “We try to make people comfortable. We can anticipate needs. We can be tough but at the same time not make it a power struggle, at least that’s what I’ve seen. So I think she has those talents.”

“Naked,” www.netflix.com/title/80142058
Marlon Wayans stars as a man who is all set to marry the girl of his dreams but can’t quite get to the altar. Every time he does, he finds himself waking up naked in an elevator, forced to live the beginning of his wedding day over and over again in this Netflix original romantic comedy movie from director Mike Tiddes (“Fifty Shades of Black”). Regina Hall, Dennis Haysbert and Loretta Devine also star.

Season 5 of the drama series about Los Angeles’ best professional fixer kicks off Sunday, Aug. 6, and finds Ray (Liev Schreiber) turning his attention back to Hollywood and his celebrity fixer firm. One of his clients is Sarandon’s character, who seeks his services after being blackmailed over a personal problem. This pits him against her own fixers, who she fears know too much already.
Elsewhere, Mickey (Jon Voight) is overjoyed at finally being invited into Ray’s home, so much so that he vows to correct his criminal ways. Others in the returning cast include Paula Malcolmson (Ray’s wife Abby), Eddie Marsan (his older brother Terry), Dash Mihok (younger brother Bunchy) and Steven Bauer (right-hand man Avi) with new additions Brian White (“Chicago Fire”), Rhys Coiro (“Entourage”), Adina Porter (“American Horror Story”) and C. Thomas Howell (“Criminal Minds”).

“10 Years of Funny or Die,” www.funnyordie.com/ videos/253ba775aa/2007-thebeginning-10-years-of-funny-ordie-with-will-ferrell-and-adammckay
Earlier this year, the comedy website Funny or Die marked its 10th anniversary, so now its two founders, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, are taking a year-by-year look back at the funniest videos of its first decade in this retrospective series. The first installment, on 2007, looks at the video that first put the platform on the map, “The Landlord,” in which Ferrell played a tenant of an abusive landlord portrayed by McKay’s daughter Pearl.
Sam also has a few traits in common with Ray.
“She’s kind of an outsider like he is,” she says. “I think they’re connected by personal shame and the fact that they’re kind of outside.
She’s a New Yorker who’s in California.”
“Ray Donovan” marks the first time Sarandon and Schreiber have worked face to face, though they both appeared in the 1998 crime drama “Twilight” and they are friends through his former partner, actress Naomi Watts. On set, she reports he’s a stickler for detail, even going so far as insisting one of her scenes be re-shot when he felt the lighting on her wasn’t right.

“Milk + Honey,” www.milkandhoneyseries.com Issa Rae (“Insecure”) and Idris Elba (“Guerrilla”) are the creative forces behind this series that follows four black women living in Los Angeles as they navigate their love lives and professional careers. This is actually a continuation of a series that began in 2011 before Rae took a few years off for other projects. Lance Gross, Boris Kodjoe and Debbie Allen are among its stars.

The Boston Red Sox’ chances of repeating as American League East champions are solid thanks in part to their lead-off man and right fielder Mookie Betts. Betts and the Red Sox are to be contested by the New York Yankees, who they’ll visit Saturday, Aug. 12 on FS1.
Now in his third full season, Betts has established himself as one of the better all-around players in the game who can swing the bat and flash a little leather. He came up to the Red Sox in 2014 after a productive progression through the minor leagues. Betts signed with the Red Sox right out of high school, opting not to play college baseball.
2016 was a complete season for Betts, who took home many awards, including a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Award. His .318 batting average was second in the American League and he was fourth in the league in RBIs with a 113. He led the Red Sox to an AL East title, but they were swept in the ALDS by the Cleveland Indians.
This season has seen Betts showcase his defensive skills. At the All-Star break, he had a firm lead among right fielders in put-outs. He lit up the highlight reel on the All-Star game when he threw out Nolan Arenado of the Colorado Rockies, who tried to tag up from first base on a deep fly ball.
Bett’s one-hopper, which measured at 221 feet and clocked at over 93 mph, was a strike that nailed Arenado with room to spare.

Yannick Bisson and Helene Joy in “Murdoch Mysteries”

BY GEORGE DICKIE @ZAP2IT.COM
If you’re looking for a break from the formulaic sitcoms, cop dramas and reality shows that seem to saturate the TV schedule in summer, an under-the-radar streaming service may have a few options that could provide a change of pace.
Acorn TV, which has been offering exclusive content since 2013, has a full slate of programming from the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand ranging from medical dramas and murder mysteries to period pieces and even dramedies. And best of all, it’s all programming unlike anything you can get here in the States.
For your consideration:
“Murdoch Mysteries”: Currently airing its 10th season on CBC, this Canadian series follows the exploits of William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson), a methodical detective in 1890s Toronto who employs radical new forensic techniques such as fingerprinting, ultraviolet light and trace evidence to solve some of the city’s most gruesome murders. Its long run tells you this series has legs.
“Janet King”: From downunder comes this acclaimed legal procedural that stars Marta Dusseldorp (“A Place to Call Home”) as the title character, a brilliant prosecutor who combats injustice. There are two eight-episode seasons available with a third currently airing in Australia.
“Decline and Fall”: Actors familiar to American audiences, among them Eva Longoria (“Desperate Housewives”) and David Suchet (“Agatha Christie’s Poirot”), star in this well-received British period comedy adapted from Evelyn Waugh’s classic novel that satirizes life in British society circa the 1920s.
“Vera”: Two-time Oscar nominee Brenda Blethyn stars in this U.K. drama about an unorthodox detective whose rumpled appearance and irascible demeanor belie a brilliant deductive mind. She’s also obsessive about her work and driven by her own demons. Seven seasons are available.
“Striking Out”: From Ireland comes this legal drama that follows the exploits of Tara Rafferty (Amy Huberman), a successful Dublin lawyer who strikes out on her own and opens an unconventional law firm.
“A Place to Call Home”: Marta Dusseldorp also figures prominently in the cast of this sweeping period soap dubbed “an Australian Downton Abbey,” starring as a nurse maneuvering among the secrets of a wealthy New South Wales family post-World War II.
“19-2”: This Canadian police drama stars Adrian Holmes (“Arrow”) and Jared Keeso (“Falling Skies”) as Montreal cops who must set aside their personal and professional differences to work together as partners.
“Doc Martin”: If it is a fish-out-of-water medical dramedy you seek, this British entry that stars Martin Clunes (“Men Behaving Badly”) as a hotshot London surgeon with little in the way of bedside manner may prove to be just the tonic.
“The Heart Guy”: This Aussie dramedy stars Rodger Corser (“The Starter Wife”) as a rising Sydney heart surgeon, who, after an unfortunate run-in with the law, is forced to return to his rural hometown where he can work only as a general practitioner.
