Fundraiser to benefit Okay Veterans Monument expansion

Event

A year after erecting a memorial honoring their deceased and living veterans, the town of Okay already seeks to add more space to the monument.

“We want to add wings to each side of the monument at a total cost of about $1,000,” said Johnny Walker, member of the Okay Preservation Committee.

A fundraiser kick-off supper will be 6 p.m. Saturday at the Okay Fire Department. Guest speaker is District 12 State Representative Kevin McDugle, a former Marine drill instructor, Walker said.

Dinners featuring hickory smoked barbecue sandwiches, chips and a drink will be sold for $7.

Classic country and gospel group Bob Weeden and the Iron Horse Band will perform at the fundraiser.

Community prepares cardboard crafts for the 10th Annual River Rumba Regatta

Georgia-Pacific’s Wave Wipers craft has competed in more than half of the past nine River Rumba Regattas.

The recycled cardboard boat is expected to compete again in the 10th annual Regatta, setting off Saturday morning at Three Forks Harbor. The Regatta raises money for charitable programs supported by the Muskogee Exchange Club.

Contestants have until 9:30 a.m. Sunday to register. Registration is $50 per boat.

Regatta chairman David Adams said he expects at least 45 racing teams to compete Saturday. Many will enter boats they’ve used in the past, he said.

Georgia-Pacific Muskogee mill community involvement coordinator Megan Herriman said the mill will enter two recycled boats in this year’s Regatta. The Wave Wipers craft made its debut in 2012. The StewardSHIP, with a children’s crew, debuted in 2013.

Herriman said boaters work hard to keep the vessels fresh for each Regatta.

“As soon as the race is over, we immediately get it out of the water and wipe it down so the water doesn’t damage the boat,” Herriman said.

It also pays to have a large crew, on land as well as in the water.

“We have 30 to 45 people

“USS Berg” last year.

“It was too heavy for two people,” Duran said, adding that four will be in the boat this year.

The dealership will add two new boats this year: a two-adult canoe and a two-child rig shaped like the Batmobile.

Kay Steele, a dealership warranty clerk, said a secret to making the boats floatable is “lots of polyurethane.”

Regatta rules state that a one-part enamel, lacquer paint, polyurethane varnish or water seal is permitted, along with duct tape. No other sealing or floatation material is allowed.

Adams said many boats don’t last to see another River Rumba. Those boats roll over, take on water.

“They sink before they end,” Adams said, adding that a “Titanic” Award is given to the craft with the most spectacular sinking.

Pre-regatta festivities begin 6 p.m. Friday with onsite boat registration.

their crafts at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Tulsa classic rock band Infinity will perform for a riverside dance at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday fun begins at 10 a.m. with opening ceremonies.

Preliminary racing heats begin at 10:15 a.m. Saturday with final heats beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Adams said the Cruis’n Angels Car Club will have a car show at 10:30 a.m.

There also will be inflatable attractions for youngsters, he said.

Adams said the Regatta raised about $16,000 last year. Proceeds from the Regatta and the Exchange Club’s Chili and BBQ Cook-off each spring, benefit a variety of children’s charities and educational programs. They include Hilldale and Muskogee education foundations, Muskogee County 4-H Club, Kelly B. Todd Cerebral Palsy and Neuro-muscular Center and Kids’ Space.

30 years, 19 of those years at the Crescent Valley Jamboree, between Fort Gibson and Tahlequah. He said he was part of a bluegrass band that opened the Jamboree in 1998.

He played until the Jamboree closed in 2016, upon the death of owner Doyle Beaver.

“When the Jamboree shut down, we wanted to get together and keep playing,” Weeden said.

The current band features Weeden at vocals and rhythm guitar;

Kristi Grady at keyboard and vocals; Stephen McClurg at vocals, rhythm guitar and steel guitar; Bill Perkins, lead guitar and fiddle; Richard Marton, bass guitar and harmony, and Randy Todd, drums and harmony. Weeden said Joe Wofford and Ronnie Holuby help with sound.

“We do a lot of classic country and, depending on the crowd, we can do oldies, stuff people can identify with,” Weeden said.

Weeden said he welcomes the opportunity to play at Okay’s fundraiser.

“Doing benefits is down our alley,” Weeden said. “If it’s something worthwhile, we’re willing to play for it.”

Walker said committee members hope to raise all the money by winter and plan to have two to three more fundraisers.

“We made a promise to the vets who weren’t on there (the monument) that we would honor them, and that’s what the fundraiser is all about,” he said.

Since the Okay Veterans Monument’s unveiling, the Okay Preservation Committee installed lighting that illuminates the American flag. Two benches with the five service emblems emblazoned on them sit at angles to each other on a concrete pad in front of the monument.

The original 6-by 5-foot 3,750-pound memorial is located at

the corner of Oklahoma 251A and Oklahoma 16 and lists 195 veterans. The town raised $10,000 in less than three hours last year to pay for the monument.

Okay resident Dakota Haley designed the tribute, according to a previous article in the Phoenix. He said that active-duty friends of his have told him that “now they don’t have to be a fallen veteran to have their name on a monument.”

Cherokee Nation gears up for Cherokee National Holiday

More than 100,000 expected to join tribe in celebrating heritage and homecoming

In Tahlequah, Labor Day weekend is a time to celebrate heritage and homecoming as the Cherokee Nation hosts its 65th annual National Holiday events.

More than 100,000 community members and visitors will bustle between the Cherokee National Capitol square, the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex, the Cherokee Heritage Center and other Cherokee Nation sites during the first weekend of September, according to Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker.

The theme this year is Water is Sacred.

“The Cherokee National Holiday was first held in 1953 to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution,” said Baker. “Many people expect the Cherokee National Holiday to offer a glimpse of traditional Cherokee life, and they are never disappointed. Artists still use ancient imagery in their works, marbles players keep score in a game that has been going on for centuries, and storytellers continue to share old tales of heroes and tricksters. Each activity is a testimony to our Cherokee ways and values.”

As traditions like archery, grape dumplings, powwow dances and drumming are found throughout the weekend, the event also embraces the future with investments into the lives of the Cherokee people.

“It is also a time to see the modern Cherokee Nation, including the expansion and beautification efforts at the tribal complex, the stateof-the-art Veterans Center, and the renovation and preservation efforts of our historic sites and museums,” said Baker. “Since we last gathered a year ago, Cherokee Nation has achieved a multitude of accomplishments. We broke ground on the W.W. Hastings expansion, which will soon be the largest and most advanced American Indian health facility in the United States. We have created unprecedented job and economic opportunities, and our tribe’s imprint on the Oklahoma

economy has grown to more than $2 billion annually.”

For Isabel Baker, mother of Chief Baker, it’s impossible to name a favorite aspect of her hometown holiday.

“I love it all of it! I love the parade and seeing all the thousands of people fill the streets and so many happy faces, and I appreciate all of the wonderful work to make it a successful parade,” she said.

When the chief and others travel, they find Cherokees are starved for information about home, said the matriarch.

“Many get to come back for one big weekend and get to go to meetings, enjoy music, art – it’s a welcoming, happy time. And, of course, I enjoy Bill John’s speech and the Cherokee choir is always so good,” she said. “I’m getting up in years so I don’t have as much energy, so I’m kind of selective about what I pick to do. From early in the morning to midnight, the weekend is filled with activities. I especially love to hear comments about how we’ve redone the courthouse and are redoing Seminary Hall. I don’t think anybody can be more generous and grateful than the Cherokees.”

spectacular celebration begins shortly after the end of the event each year, and includes a team of dedicated volunteers and staff.

“We’re all set to host activities like the cornstalk shoot, marble tournament, stickball competition, horseshoe pitching and a blowgun contest, and the inter-tribal powwow is always one of the biggest draws of the weekend. But we’re also excited about a couple of our new events,” said Bayly Wright, Cherokee Nation Community Tourism manager.

Aside from more than 50 activities scheduled throughout the weekend, more than 100 vendors will set up and offer everything from handmade arts and crafts to delicious foods, according to Wright.

The 22nd annual Homecoming Art Show held at the Cherokee Heritage Center opens to the public on Saturday, runs through Sept. 30, and features a variety of authentic Cherokee art divided into two divisions: traditional and contemporary.

“You’ll find them at the Cherokee Heritage Center, at the Cherokee National Courthouse Square in downtown Tahlequah, at One Fire Field west of the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex, and at the Cherokee Nation Cultural Grounds where the powwow is held,” Wright said. This year, several of Cherokee National Treasures will gather to sign copies of the new book, “Cherokee National Treasures: In Their Own Words.” Book-signings are scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 31, 1-3 p.m. in the Cherokee Nation Gift Shop, and Saturday, Sept. 2, noon-3 p.m. at the Cherokee Heritage Center.

Storyteller and reenactor Gayle Ross was excited to tell of another new event she’s been asked to emcee in the Cherokee village at the Cherokee Heritage Center.

“It’s called ‘Cherokee Stories at Diligwa,’ an evening of storytelling with Robert Lewis, and there may be a few other surprises. Robert’s one of my favorite people,” said Ross, who also enjoys watching the traditional stickball games.

“I love seeing the holiday art show, the artists seem to put their best special material out at the Heritage Center. And during the day, I enjoy walking around to see all the vendors on the grounds of the Heritage Center. And seeing so many Cherokee friends from all over the country.”

The storytelling is Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Entry is $10, and children under age 5 are admitted for free. Attendees should bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating.

There is a new cartel in post-Escobar Colombia in ‘Narcos’

With Pablo Escobar gone, the DEA turns its attention to an even more formidable Colombian drug-trafficking group, as the new season of Netflix’s “Narcos” gets going this week.

In Season 3 of the crime drama, which begins streaming Friday, Sept. 1, that new player is known as the Cali Cartel, which does business quite differently from Escobar’s Medellin Cartel. Where the latter used violent means to achieve its ends, the former prefers to bribe government officials and keep its actions out of the headlines.

They’re led by four godfathers: its leader Gilberto Rodriguez

Orejuela (Damian Alcazar, “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”); Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela (Francisco Denis, “The Kid Who Lies”), the organization’s architect; Pacho Herrera (Alberto Ammann, “The Debt”), an assassin who runs international distribution; and Chepe Santacruz Londono (Pepe Rapazote,

“Shameless”), head of the New York City operation.

On their trail are Colombian and U.S. law enforcement, among them DEA agent Javier Pena (series returnee Pedro Pascal) and two inexperienced cohorts, Daniel Van Ness (Matt Whelan, “My Wedding and Other Secrets”) and Chris Feistl (Michael Stahl-David, “Cloverfield”).

“We’re peas in a pod in the sense that we’re together all the time, although different outlooks,” Stahl-David explains. “Van Ness is a bit more cynical and a bit more maybe of a realist ... but my character is much more ambitious and hard-headed and more willing to kind of take a leap of faith than Van Ness is. So we kind of but heads about that.”

To get a handle on his character, Stahl-David spent time with the real Feistl, now a former agent living in Arizona, who filled him in about the type of work a DEA agent does, which he says

is less like police work and more like detective work.

“It’s pretty much putting pieces together,” he says, “surveilling people for a long period of time, working different sources – who’s lying to you, who’s telling the truth. You know, corroborating different things against government databases in a time really before the internet. So it’s the kind of work you wouldn’t see in a TV show, because it’s not sexy to watch someone search through government databases or surveil for like a week on end in one spot.

“But that’s kind of what it takes,” he continues, “and what was interesting about that was getting my head around the kind of focus and intensity it takes to be good at this job. I mean, Chris Feistl says, ‘When I get my teeth into something, I don’t let go.’ And I was like, ‘OK, that’s sort of key to this character.’ There’s a tenacity, there’s like a determination.”

Michael Stahl-David (left) and Matt Whelan star in “Narcos,” which opens its third season Friday on Netflix.

The actor also found himself imagining what life must have been like for Feistl in the mid-’90s in Cali, one of the series’ filming locations. The city now enjoys a tourism boom that has enveloped the entire nation, but its predominantly Latino population gave Stahl-David a clue about how the agents must have felt to be in the minority.

“They couldn’t even really hope to blend in,” he says. “All they could do is cover their face with like sunglasses and a hat, and if the cartel wanted to get photos of them they couldn’t get a clean shot.”

“So there was this real tension to all their operations,” he continues. “And knowing that going into the place, you could imagine that when you were there, even though it also felt very much like a safe place. And since I grew up speaking Spanish, my down time was very much kind of immersing myself in the culture and trying to live like a local as much as possible.”

Ask Rob Lowe if he believes in Bigfoot and you will get a quick and unequivocal thumbs-up.

Indeed, of the three Lowe men starring in the unscripted Wednesday A&E Network series “The Lowe Files,” Dad is more likely than college-age sons Matthew and John to believe in Bigfoot, ghosts or any other mysteries or mystical creatures they investigate on the show.

But that doesn’t mean he automatically buys into everything.

“There’s a lot out there that is hoax,” the 53-year-old former “West Wing” star says. “If you go on YouTube, 75 percent of what you see without a doubt is a hoax. But if (Bigfoot) is nothing but a hoax, people have been doing it for hundreds of years, across multiple cultures and multiple continents, that never had any contact with each other. And everybody – people in Nepal came up with the same idea as the people who discovered California as the people who ... . I find that to be a more unbelievable (story).”

In half-hour show, Rob, John and Matthew travel around the country investigating mysteries that have always fascinated them, from ghost encounters at Preston Castle in Central California and an underwater alien base off the coast of Malibu to UFOs in Arizona and two episodes on Bigfoot. They also explore how fear plays into human perception.

While John, a science major, and law student Matthew both maintain a healthy skepticism of the cases they encounter, Rob likes to keep a childlike sense of wonder for a very simple reason: It’s more fun.

“I keep going back to when I was a kid,” he says, “nothing was more fun than being scared, like the ghost story, walking alone at night. And as we get older and we become adults, we lose that childlike sense of wonder – and there’s a sense of wonder, but there’s also a sense of dread.”

Curtis Stone joins in on the ‘Moveable Feast’

For chef Curtis Stone, doing “Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking” is always an educational experience.

“You know, as a chef you are unfortunately in some ways bound to the four walls of your kitchen,” the 41-year-old Australian explains. “But when you get the opportunity to venture out of that and get on an oyster farm or a mussel farm or see how stuff’s grown in a beautiful organic garden, it’s always really enlightening and it helps you grow as a chef, for sure.”

Season 5 of the PBS culinary/travel series gets underway Saturday, Sept. 2 (check local listings) and finds Stone and fellow co-hosts Pete Evans and Michelle Bernstein venturing to points in the U.S., Europe and Puerto Rico to meet Michelin star chefs and award-winning food artisans for memorable culinary experiences and spontaneous spreads.

Stone will host five of the season’s 13 episodes in locations in the Pacific Northwest and New Mexico, learning about blue corn, oyster farming, wine blending and mussel farming – the last a surprisingly simple process that involves suspending ropes from a pier, on which mussel spawn then attaches itself and grows.

“They do take some time to reach maturity,” Stone says, “so you’d need a decent (size) farm to be harvesting on the regular. But this is what I’m talking about. You learn so much from these guys. We’re talking to them and I’m like, ‘So how do you harvest? Where do you store them?’ He’s like, ‘No, no, we wait until we get the order, so we don’t pull them out of the water until we get the order. So you place the order with us and we literally go ahead and get that ready within minutes for a same-day delivery.’ And you’re like, ‘Oh, that’s amazingly fresh. Really cool.’ ”

What book are you currently reading?

“I was reading ‘Secrets of the Baby Whisperer’ ... because I’ve got two young kids and we’re doing a little sleep training right now. But yeah, I’ve got my hands full with the restaurants and the boys, so no pleasure books at the moment, unfortunately.”

What did you have for dinner last night?

“Last night I had a bowl of minestrone soup at midnight when I got home from the restaurant. I’m usually hungry after service and I skipped dinner, so I was extremely hungry when I got home. I try not to eat too late, but here last night was a bowl of soup that my wife had made.”

What is your next project?

“We’re actually going to relaunch Maude (his Beverly Hills, Calif., restaurant) to some extent next year. So we’re moving away from the one ingredient that we’ve done for the last four-and-a-half years and we’re going to turn that into something very different, even more aspirational. But yeah, we’re really excited about it. We’re still working out all the finer details. So I guess Maude is my next big project.”

The 2017 college football season opens perhaps with more fanfare than ever. Not to mention a couple of real solid matchups in games that will likely have a significant impact on the seasons of the teams involved.

The season actually began on August 26 with a handful of games, most notably the one between the Stanford Cardinal and Rice Owls, which was played in Sydney, Australia. As typical, however, a full schedule is on tap for Labor Day weekend beginning Thursday, August 31 with five FBS (Division 1-A) matchups that evening.

country. They begin their seasons against each other Saturday, September 2 in a prime-time slot on ABC.

Alabama’s season also ended with a loss to Clemson, but on a last-second play in the College Football Playoff championship game. With a swarming defense that continues to reload with coach Nick Saban’s top recruits and another functional quarterback in Jalen Hurts, Bama will once again be dominant. Still, they’ll have their hands full on Saturday, with FSU sophomore quarterback Deondre Francois, who could blossom into a Heisman Trophy candidate.

In the wake of Pablo Escobar’s bloody demise, the DEA turns its attentions to the world’s richest drug trafficking operation, the Cali Cartel, which prefers to use bribery of government officials rather than violence to ensure its business interests are successful. New to the cast this season, which opens Friday, are Damian Alcazar, Francisco Denis, Alberto Ammann and Pepe Rapazote as the cartel’s four godfathers.

A pair of Big Ten teams meet up Thursday on ESPN, when senior quarterback J.T. Barrett and the Ohio State Buckeyes visit the Indiana Hoosiers, who would love nothing more than to upset the favored Buckeyes. Perhaps a solid Hoosiers defense will be just the ticket for a Buckeyes offense led by Barrett that struggled down the stretch last season. OSU’s season ended in an embarrassing 31-0 loss to Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinal. On the other side of that coin, look for Ohio State coach Urban Meyer to have his squad fired up on a quest to avenge last season’s turmoil.

It used to be that the first week or two on the schedules of top teams were so-called “tune-up” games against lesser opponents. That’s not the case this year for the Alabama Crimson Tide and Florida State Seminoles, who may be the two best teams in the

Earlier on Saturday, also on ABC, the Michigan Wolverines and Florida Gators meet up at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas (home of the Dallas Cowboys) in a game that should feature two very potent defenses. That’s assuming Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh’s young recruits on both sides of the ball are up to the task so early in the season. Michigan’s success this season depends on that factor alone, while Florida could very well meet Alabama later this season in the Southeast Conference (SEC) championship game.

This all is just the beginning of what looks to be another exciting season of college football. The “Saturday” game, as it’s called, is bigger than ever, and gives fans continuous action from Labor Day weekend on through to the year-end bowl games.

Deondre Francois: FSU’s dual-threat QB

He’s yet to play the first game of what will be his sophomore season, but college football experts are expecting Florida State Seminoles quarterback Deondre Francois to be among the possible candidates when the sports’s most prestigious trophies are awarded at the end of the season. But first, there’s some football to play, including the ’Noles’ tough season-opener against the Alabama Crimson Tide, Saturday, September 2 on ABC.

A redshirt freshman in 2015, Francois was competing with Sean Maguire for the starting quarterback position prior to the start of last season, when Maguire was sidelined with an injury. Francois responded by passing for 419 yards and a pair of touchdowns in his first game, which was a comeback 22-point victory over Ole Miss. FSU was ranked No. 2 in the country two weeks later when they got manhandled by Lamar Jackson and Louisville. They would fall as low as 23rd before Francois was able to help lead them to seven wins in their final eight games (losing only to Clemson) and a berth in the Orange Bowl, where he threw for a pair of touchdowns in a thrilling one-point win over Michigan.

Francois finished his freshman season with 3,350 yards passing (best among freshman quarterbacks) and 20 touchdowns. He also churned up 198 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns and became known for his toughness. The Seminoles enter the season with College Football Playoff aspirations, but they have one of the hardest schedules in the NCAA. For Francois, it starts Saturday night against Alabama.

Answers:

It’s Labor Day next weekend, bringing with it barbecues, beach outings and an extra day off.

It also officially starts the clock ticking on how much time you have left to build that garden shed, fix that leaking roof or patch and seal that rutted driveway before the weather turns foul. But if you lack the expertise to accomplish such tasks, where do you turn?

YouTube, that’s where. The all-encompassing video website has myriad do-ityourselfer channels that can give the novice the knowledge and confidence to take on around-the-house projects and pull them off with the aplomb of a pro, thus impressing your friends and, more importantly, saving you money – because, after all, there are only 118 shopping days until Christmas.

HouseImprovements: Host Shannon (no last name given) has created nearly 200 videos over the past seven years covering projects in carpentry, plumbing and electrical, from simple tasks such as patching walls to the more involved projects like building a deck. His goal: to empower the DIY-er.

This Old House: The venerable PBS series also has a formidable online presence, boasting more than 1,200 informative and entertaining videos pertaining to home improvement and repair, plus behind-the-scenes footage of the home renovation projects the TV show undertakes.

DIY Network: Like “TOH,” the online counterpart to the basic cablenet offers up a comprehensive look at all areas of home improvement, repair and renovation, featuring everything from basic tips and tricks to ambitious projects like a complete bathroom remodel.

DIY Hip Chicks: Host and licensed contractor Beth Allen aims to empower women with her nearly 400 videos tailored to anyone too intimidated to try even the most basic home improvement or repair. While easy to follow, seasoned DIY-ers may want to look elsewhere.

Ask the Builder: Home repair expert and blogger Tim Carter offers up common sense answers to viewers’ questions, covering everything from grouting tile and relocating a shower drain to building a shed and finding a contractor.

Sparky Channel: As the name implies, electrical projects are the bread and butter of these 600-plus videos, in which a quirky host named Bill walks viewers through such projects as wiring a GFCI receptacle and a double-duplex garage receptacle, explaining everything so thoroughly that you do the job right the first time – because you really don’t want to do anything electrical wrong.

Woodworking for Mere Mortals: Anyone can make stuff with wood, according to channel host Steve Ramsey, who aims to make woodworking easy, fun and accessible with new videos posted every Friday, ranging from basic tips and projects to how to set up a wood shop. Get inspired.
