Live at the Frisco Depot entertains music lovers on Thursdays

Bluegrass, blues, classic rock, country and more featured at Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame

Old wooden walls at the Frisco Depot start shaking nearly every Thursday evening.

That’s when popcorn pops, friends gather and music goes live.

The depot, home of the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, hosts Live at the Frisco Depot at 8 p.m. most Thursday nights.

And on those Thursday nights, fans might hear bluegrass, blues, classic rock, country, Red Dirt.

Tonight’s performance features singer-songwriter Wes Parish and classic country/rock musician David Cargill.

Parish said he focuses on Red Dirt, Americana and folk.

“I write about things that happen to me. Everyone has a story to tell,” he said. “Everyone has good things happen. Everyone has rough things happen. In a small town, everyone knows your business, so I figured I’d write about it.”

Cargill said he grew up on country music. He said his grandfather’s cousin was Henson Cargill of “Skip a Rope” fame.

David Cargill said he sings classic country and classic rock “with a country

He said he’s been a frequent visitor to the Frisco Depot and has enjoyed seeing local acts.

Musician Harley Hamm, who helps set up live acts, said acts could draw from 80 to 100 people.

“It seems like the local acts draw more people,” Hamm said.

Hamm drew dozens of fans to his “Leo Party” during a recent Live at the Frisco Depot. He played a rocking blues backed by Bronko Carr on bass,

Artists, novices welcome at Muskogee Art Guild

Guild allows visitors to cultivate their artistic side, expand techniques

People don’t need to be master artists to come to Muskogee Art Guild’s Open Studio.

The guild opens its studio to anyone 16 or older, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Sandra Willems said the studio is “where I can expand my reach.”

“They have wonderful, supportive people here,” Willems said. “They are proficient in different mediums.”

Willems came to the studio on a Thursday to work on a portrait using watercolor, filling in details with colored pencils.

“I love art for one thing,” she said. “And I learn a lot.”

Guild project coordinator Becky Lucht said guild artists are on hand to help with tints, techniques and other needs during the studio.

“Maybe you’re working on something and you’re stuck,” she

said. “You can get a fresh perspective from someone who has already been through it. Maybe you want to watercolor, but you don’t know how. We can advise you on what materials you might need to get started. There’s a lot out there, and it’s easy to get confused.”

Some guild artists are regular helpers.

Lucht called Gwyn LaCrone “the queen of the open studio.”

“Gwyn’s been very generous with her time and talents to help people who come in and are tentative and

want to try it, but don’t know what to do,” Lucht said. “She takes them under her wing and shows them the ropes.”

LaCrone said the number of people coming to the open studio varies.

“Sometimes we have six or seven, sometimes one or two, sometimes 10 or 12,” LaCrone said, adding that Thursdays are usually the busiest days.”

Lucht said “Thursdays are when Gwyn are here.”

Terri Postlethwait, who is working on a mixed-media piece, said she’s improved her skills since coming to the studio.

“I could ask Gwyn, ‘what do I need to do here and here.’  She would tell me things to do, like darken it, or the eye doesn’t go directly there,” Postlethwait said. “She’s really good.”

Lucht said a different artist is assigned different days.

“We have a core of four or five that are pretty regular,” she said.

“Gwyn’s been very generous with her time and talents to help people who come in and are tentative and want to try it, but don’t know what to do”

Betty Ussery, working on an oil painting, said she and her daughter try to come once a week. She said she comes mainly for the friendships.

Lucht said the guild has picked up nearly 30 new members through open studio.

“We have a whole group of gals from Eufaula that come up to it,” she said. “They think it’s the coolest in the world. We think they’re cool.”

Lucht said the guild also offers classes at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays each month.

Dan Clark said he and his wife come to Live at Frisco Depot nearly every Thursday.

“We come pretty much all the time. It’s great

entertainment at a reasonable price,” Clark said. “We always look forward to Thursday nights.”

Ann Clark said she enjoys the variety.

“I don’t think we’ve seen a group we didn’t like,” she said, adding that she enjoys watching OMHOF executive director Jim Blair perform.

Blair plays a variety of genres and has done tributes to Hank Williams and Buddy Holly.

Susan Vaughn said she comes out once or twice a month.

“I love the local groups here,” Vaughn said.

Fans said they also like the family atmosphere. People could buy popcorn, soft drinks, water or beer.

The Leo Party featured coffee and a tray of cookies.

Green Country Roots Festival a fun family event

Three-day event celebrates diversity, culture through music and art

A weekend of festivities celebrating diversity and culture through music and art is coming to downtown Tahlequah this month.

The fourth annual Green Country Roots Festival, Aug. 24-26, in Norris Park and the Morgan Street Pavilion, will feature live music, dancers, poets, writers, and food.

“The event began as a concert to give back to the people who helped us,” said Ty Wilson, vice president of Cherokees for Black Indian History Preservation Foundation and one of its three founders. “We’re giving local artists a chance to shine and get families together.”

The events are free to the public and are family-friendly.

“We are a Cherokee history and cultural preservation organization, but this event is not about our organization. It’s about supporting all of our Green Country artisans and giving them an opportunity to showcase their talents. It’s Green Country citizens celebrating the unique blend of people who make Green Country the great place it is,” said Wilson.

Wilson and some musician friends, some of whom play in the band Austin Cobb, came up with the idea for the concerts at one of their gigs in a Cherokee casino, and the concerts grew into the festival.

Festival lineup

• Thursday, Aug. 24, Pre-Party: 6:30 p.m., Anchorway; 7:15, Sprnrml; 8, Dark Values; 8:45, Goodfella acoustic set; and 9:30, Quahlity Vibes.

• Friday, Aug. 25: 6 p.m., Upland; 6:45, Mason Jar Revival; 7:45, 45ive; 8:15, Ragland; 9, Echelon; 9:45, Free Kennedy; and 11, Finches in the Attic.

• Saturday, Aug. 26: 2 p.m., Gospel music hour; 3, Pat Moss; 4, Cecil Gray; 5, Jimmy Markham and the Caretakers; 6, Hydromatics; 7, DocFell & Co.; 7:45, When the Clock Strikes; 8:30, Goodfella; 9:45, The Dirty Mugs; and 11, Sam Hill.

The first year featured a one-day concert; the second year offered two days of concerts; and last year, the group expanded it to a festival.

“We have several genres of music, all types of art, kids’ events, food, drinks and a few prize giveaways. There is something that will appeal to everyone in the family. The whole family should want to participate in this fun family event,” Wilson said.

and seeing others support it, too.

“We’re an educational and cultural organization, and one of the things we like to do is support artists and musicians. That’s part of our culture,” said Christie.

Entertainment includes interpretive dancers, gospel singers, and belly dancers.

“We like to have all genres represented,” Christie said.

Through the nonprofit, Christie said, they’ve built many friendships and relationships.

“They all come together for this. A lot of people who support us, we go out and support them now, too. That’s important, that we be unified,” said Christie.

One of Christie’s responsibilities is checking in vendors and entertainers.

“I get to meet all the artists and talent and vendors. I enjoy that. It’s fun,” said Christie.

The activities for kids will be on Saturday.

“Brian Jackson came last year; the kids enjoyed him,” said Christie. “He’s scheduled for this year, if he’s feeling better. We have games kids enjoy and cotton candy – boy, do kids love that stuff! We’re kind of getting known for cotton candy. We bought two machines and have been experimenting with flavors.”

Christie’s favorite is mango-peach.

Snowcones and popcorn are also among the treats the organization will offer, along with the 20 or so vendors.

“We’re a nonprofit; we rely on sponsorships and donations and fundraisers,” said Christie.

Ben Edlund delivers a ‘Tick’ for our troubled times

T he third time is likely to be the charm for “The Tick,” Ben Edlund’s superhero satire that started life as a comic in 1988 and begins streaming as a live-action series Friday, Aug. 25, on Amazon.

This insanely buzzedabout new show was preceded by two previous TV adaptations, an animated 1994-96 version with “The Monkees” star Mickey Dolenz in its voice cast, then in a very funny but shortlived live-action 2001 comedy on Fox, with Patrick Warburton as the Tick.

While this latest iteration will still keep fans laughing, this time around Edlund has taken an audacious gamble, rooting the madcap antics in a traumatic

backstory for the Tick’s sidekick, Arthur (Griffin Newman), whose life changed as a child when his father was killed in front of his eyes, crushed like a bug by a crashing spaceship. Since then, Arthur has spent much of his life in a paranoid haze, numbed by drugs.

“At first, having Arthur’s dad being killed by a villain, and having that (incident) send him on the path to superherodom, seemed so cliche that I was worried to start playing with those elements,” Edlund explains.

“Actually, though, it feels almost institutional. It’s the right way to go, and it began to pay off in terms of Arthur’s character.

“The story became ‘Here’s what happens when you don’t do what Batman did.’ Arthur just took the

medications the doctors told him to and tried not to fall apart, but then events start to catch up with him, and he’s not really prepared to deal with any of them.”

Enter the Tick (British actor Peter Serafinowicz), a grandiose, larger-thanlife superhero given to spouting aphorisms such as “Evil wears every possible mitten.” He literally laughs at danger as he trounces bad guys. He also just may exist entirely in Arthur’s imagination, since he keeps evading his sidekick’s nervous queries on that point with replies like “Don’t get stuck on trivia, man.”

It’s a role tailor-made for Serafinowicz, one of the industry’s busiest voiceover actors (he recently joined the TBS sitcom “People of Earth” as the voice of Eric the cube), who also has

Peter Serafinowicz stars in “The Tick,” which begins streaming next Friday on Amazon.

Mary Murphy’s uninhibited laughter and excited screams have made her a fan favorite on the judging panel of Fox’s Monday night competition “So You Think You Can Dance,” but she started honing that personality very early. As the youngest of four siblings, and the only girl, she was an unapologetic tomboy as a kid.

“I like to say that I was the fourth boy in my family, and I did everything they wanted to do,” she says. “If they went muskrat hunting, I went along. I was Huckleberry Mary!”

She’s had an impressive career in ballroom dance, but she didn’t develop that passion until after college, when the manager of a dance studio where she was working noticed her potential and took her to see the U.S. Ballroom Championships in New York.

“I walked into the Waldorf Astoria with that three-tiered balcony and the crystal chandeliers and it was like a movie,” she recalls. “I saw about 20 couples swooping across the floor in a waltz in all these costumes and makeup and rhinestones and hair. You have to remember, that was so totally foreign to who I was at that time, but it was like a lightning bolt hit me and I knew on a cellular level that

the requisite handsome, muscular physicality to pull off a superhero gig.

“Peter’s a godsend,” Edlund says. “To be honest, I hadn’t been aware of the depth of his work. We realized that we’re taking on another part of the Tick ‘voice,’ and Peter speaks from within that dialogue at a very powerful level, but he’s able to play all these different colorings on top of that. He has that savant quality down, but he also has a dangerous edge – you’re not sure whether there might be some ulterior motive to what he says and does because he’s got that ‘next step’ in his performance.

“It’s not an exaggeration to say that, without it, we probably would not be having this conversation now.”

I wanted to be a professional ballroom dancer.”

When she’s not working on her Fox series, you’re most likely to find her at Mary Murphy’s Champion Ballroom Academy, her San Diego studio, where she periodically offers free classes to Alzheimer’s patients and their caregive “Ballroom dancing affects five out o six areas of the brain, because there are so many things going on at one time,” explains Murphy, whose mother died o the illness. “There are few other things that can reduce your risk as much.”

Born: March 9, 1958, in Lancas Ohio.

Education: A bachelor’s degree in physical education, with a minor modern dance, from Ohio Universi Nickname: The Queen of Screa

Early dreams: Before falling in love with ballroom dance, Murphy originally planned to be a track coa and teach P.E. to children with lear disabilities.

Personal best: She considers t high point of her competitive dance career to be a waltz she performed the World 10-Dance Championship Innsbruck, Austria.

Rennie opts for science over guesswork in YouTube’s ‘Helen’s Kitchen’

The scientist that she is, Helen Rennie takes a very methodical approach to cooking.

Indeed, the former computer programmer and current host of “Helen’s Kitchen” on her YouTube channel, likes to experiment with her recipes, preparing each the exact same way but varying one ingredient or technique in each trial until she hits upon the best-possible outcome.

It’s how she’s developed her methods for preparing everything from steak and rack of lamb to grilled zucchini and pasta with sardines.

“I find that food is the best experience for most people to have with something empirical, because most things in life unfortunately I cannot really test out,” says Rennie, a Russian-born chef who also teaches cooking classes in her home of Natick, Mass. “Like say I read about a new way to parent my children and chances are I can’t really collect data on that very well. It’s going to kind of come out one way or another. But with food you can. You know, when you have a question about, ‘Does it work like this?’ you can actually test it.”

Rennie’s technique for grilling steak is unique and best exemplifies her approach. After drying the meat with a paper towel, she sprinkles it with salt and then sears it on an oiled grill, flipping it every 2-3 minutes until she has the classic crisscross grill marks. Then she turns off the burner directly beneath it and puts the others on low and lets it cook until desired doneness, as determined by a thermometer (medium rare, for example, is 130 degrees Fahrenheit). Then let the meat rest, seven minutes per inch of thickness.

What book are you currently reading?

“My favorite new cookbook is ‘The Fire of Peru.’ ... (It’s) really outstanding. It’s so rare that I find a cookbook that I’m happy with because I find very often they’re all food porn, just like the stuff online. Beautiful pictures, but when you go to actually do the recipe and (it’s) like, ‘Well, there are all these details missing.’ So his stuff is great. I cooked so many things from his book and they’re all delicious, and great detail in the recipes.”

What did you have for dinner last night?

“Dinner last night was whole grilled bronzini. It’s a little Mediterranean bass. It’s very yummy, sweet, flaky (meat), and grilled summer squash. ...”

What is your next project?

“I have this series that I just started on my channel called ‘Cookware Therapy.’ People have been asking me for a while to make a video about which pan to use for what, and in all my videos I usually mention specifically which pan type is best for which dish. But it doesn’t always give somebody a general overview. ... So I started working on this ... and it’s been a somewhat difficult-to-make series because I research this stuff kind of to death, but really fun because I find it’s not always information you can get. ... Sometimes it’s fun to do something that’s more like slightly higher level of some general concept.”

Oscar winner Kathy Bates (“Misery”) stars in this 30-minute sitcom from Chuck Lorre (“Two and a Half Men”) and David Javerbaum (“The Daily Show”), about a lifelong advocate of marijuana legalization who finally gets to live her dream of owning a Los Angeles cannabis dispensary. Dropping Friday, the series also stars Tone Bell, Aaron Moten and Elizabeth Alderfer.

If it seemed that the mission of “The Last Ship” was nearing its end, the crew is still very much on duty.

In fact, not only does the TNT drama series based on William Brinkley’s novel have a fourth season that begins Sunday, Aug. 20 – with two back-to-back episodes – production is well under way on a Season 5 that presumably will be shown next year. Honored with a Navy Distinguished Public Service Award last year for “getting the Navy right,” the saga resumes as the virus fought by those aboard the destroyer USS Nathan James takes a new form, affecting global food crops and threatening a worldwide famine that could decimate mankind.

While Capt. Mike Slattery (played by Adam Baldwin) and his allies travel the Mediterranean in what one character terms a “last chance to save the human race,” former captain Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) is seeking a quieter life in Greece ... in a plot purposely meant as a modern parallel to Homer’s Odyssey. However, as one can expect from the show that includes action-movie specialist Michael Bay (“Transformers”) among its executive producers, Chandler’s tranquility doesn’t last long.

“It’s a miracle to get even a pilot episode produced, let alone aired, so to get into Season 4 while shooting Season 5 is quite amazing,” Baldwin reflects. “It’s a testament to the faith that the network has in our show, to the audience’s reaction, and to our writers’ diligence in storytelling. action-adventure, they’re able to come up with fresh characters and fresh ideas for the current characters. And wonderful guest actors come in and push our buttons.”

As other cast members including Bridget Regan and Travis Van Winkle return as well, Baldwin also credits the series’ directing team led by an executive producer of “The Last Ship,” Paul Holahan. “Peter Weller has come in and directed several episodes for us,” Baldwin notes of the “RoboCop” star. “He’s a great actor, and a great mentor for all the actors involved here. You can always go to him and ask him, ‘How would I play this?’ And he generally says, ‘Just drive a truck through it!’ ”

In various other projects including legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s war movie “Full Metal Jacket,” the sci-fi classic “Independence Day” and the former NBC spy satire “Chuck,” Baldwin also has played authority figures. “I think it’s just because I’m tall,” he muses. “When I came of age, I got (the movie) ‘My Bodyguard’ and we were in relative peacetime, so the opportunity to join just didn’t present itself to me.

“Over time, having played these characters, I’ve come into contact with so many people in the Armed Forces, and they’re just such great people,” adds Baldwin, whose father was in the U.S. Navy Air Corps. “They’re straight shooters and upstanding citizens with such leadership qualities, I just pretend to emulate what they actually do in real life.”

In the opener, the pair talk about metaphors with Liz Camp of Rutgers University.

Phillips eyes breakout senior season for the Cardinal

The Stanford Cardinal are expected to have one of the best defenses in college football this year. The first line of that defense includes senior defensive tackle Harrison Phillips. The team’s powerful run-stopper, who happens to be a double-major, will get a chance to show his stuff on national television when the Cardinal open the college football season against Rice at Allianz Stadium in Sydney, Australia airing Saturday, Aug. 26 on ESPN.

Phillips enters his final college season as a mere shoo-in for an NFL career, but another solid season like last year that included 46 tackles and 6.5 sacks will surely up his stock in the draft. Phillips played sparingly in his freshman season in 2014 and was injured in the first game of the 2015 season, when Stanford eventually

finished third overall and destroyed Iowa in the Rose Bowl. The team fell off last season, getting as high as seventh in the rankings before suffering back-to-back humiliating losses to Washington and Washington State. They finished out the season at 10-3 and enjoyed a Sun Bowl victory over North Carolina and a final ranking of 12th.

This season, the Pac-12, especially the Northern Division, is expected to again be competitive with the Cardinal and Phillips right in the mix. A state champion wrestler who also was a discus thrower in high school, he is now the anchor of the Cardinal defense. The opportunity to have a breakout season – the kind that lands you in the top of next year’s NFL draft – begins in Australia on Saturday night.

A PARTY GUY TRIES TO WIN OVER HIS CHILDHOOD CRUSH IN ‘PARTY BOAT’

Brett Davern stars as Max in Crackle’s ‘Party Boat’

Max is just a guy who loves a good time.

1)

Answers:

As played by Brett Davern (“Awkward,” “Beautiful Ohio”) in “Party Boat,” an original comedy movie that begins streaming Thursday, Aug. 24 on Crackle, he’s the fun-loving owner of a 100-foot yacht that he hires out for private parties when he’s not hosting his own personal bashes. His latest endeavor is to throw his wildest party to date, a birthday bash for his best friend Kiley (Katie Leclerc, “Switched at Birth,” “Confess”). Unbeknownst to her, Max has been crushing on her since childhood, and when this 20-something learns that her current boyfriend Greg (Sung Kang, “Power,” “Fast and Furious 6”) plans to propose, he pulls out all the stops to throw the mother of all ragers and hopefully win her heart.

“We all know Max. We all grew up with a Max,” Davern explains. “He is the life of every party, has tons of potential. We can tell that he’s super smart but he probably is a straight C student or maybe just graduated high school by the skin of his teeth, but everybody loves him. ... And then after high school, his buddy Sean (Demetrius Bridges, ”The Vampire Diaries“) probably convinced him to buy this boat and start a party company, but Max doesn’t have any interest in finance or numbers or books or anything like that. He just wants to have a good time, and so a lot of the decisions he makes are based on making the party better, not making the business better. And so he gets the business into a lot of trouble all the time.”

“But then Kiley’s fiancé has this idea to throw her a birthday party on the boat, and so Max realizes it’s his chance to get her alone on the boat again where it all began and hopefully profess his love for her then, and find the perfect moment. And I guess we’ll have to see if that happens or not.”

Standing in Max’s way is Officer Walsh, played by Jay Mohr (“Jerry Maguire,” “Gary Unmarried”), a lake patrol cop who has a long history with Max, and is fed up with the raucous antics that Max’s bashes always spawn.

“In the beginning of the movie, he basically tells us this party is our one last chance to play it safe,” Davern explains, “because Max is constantly setting fires, probably literally and figuratively. And so Officer Walsh tells them that this is their one last chance to throw a party that doesn’t get out of hand, otherwise he’s going to take their license and run them off the lake. So he’s constantly there in the background causing trouble.”
