A change of jackets can turn Missouri entertainer Radney Pennington into Buddy Holly or Elvis Presley.
That’s quite a task for someone who won’t turn 17 until later this month — born nearly 40 years after Elvis and Holly hit the charts.
“My whole family grew up in that era,” Pennington said. “I grew up hearing them on CDs and cassettes.”
Pennington performs the music of Elvis, Holly and other greats at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Plumb Theatre in Eufaula.
Theatre owner Mattie Maloy said the $10 tickets are going fast, so call for availability.
Maloy said the Plumb is fortunate to get Pennington, a popular draw in Branson, Missouri.
“I had heard about him from a friend of mine over there,” Maloy said. “He only had one opening for the rest of the year.”
She said the teen looks a little

bit like Holly or Conway Twitty.
“He changes jackets and changes persona,” she said. “He does Buddy Holly, a little bit of Elvis, a little bit of George Jones.”
Maloy said Pennington has been playing in Branson since he was 4 or 5.
Pennington said he began performing at Branson’s Mickey Gilley Theater about 12 years ago.
He said he started out doing “strictly Elvis.”
“Over the years, I evolved into 1950s and 1960s music,” Pennington said. “If you don’t like some-

The group Secret Society will play Saturday at a benefit for 1-year-old Mackenzie Garrison, who was born with a dangerously low level of blood platelets.

Area musicians are uniting to help a 1-year-old get a bone marrow transplant.
The musicians will perform at the #TeamMackenzie Benefit Concert and Silent Auction, 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Roxy Theater. A suggested donation of $10 will be taken at the door.
Proceeds will help the family of 1-year-old Mackenzie Garrison, who was born with a dangerously low level of blood platelets, which help control bleeding.
Mackenzie’s mother, Fort Gibson graduate Lacey Garrison, said Mackenzie was born with 8,000 blood platelets, while the normal level is at least 150,000.
Garrison said her little girl has needed five blood transfusions and five hospital stays since April. She said the family was not able to learn what caused her problems until they went to Boston Children’s Hospital. There,

doctors diagnosed her with amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia.
According to a National Institute of Health website, amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia is a rare blood disorder shown by a significantly low or negative level of large bone marrow cells that produce platelets.
“Her disease is so rare, it is not treatable at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,” Garrison said, referring to the Memphis hospital that offers free treatment for life-threatening diseases.
Garrison said the Boston hospital found a bone marrow donor and scheduled a transplant in September.
Even then, the family will have to stay in Boston for 100 days. Mackenzie will be homebound for six months to a year, Garrison said.
“We spent countless hours on the phone, staying focused,” she said. “We have a good insurance company, or we wouldn’t be able to go to Boston.”
Garrison said she is a radiological technician and her husband works in the oil business.
Lauren Lambeth, who attended FGHS with Garrison, said she wants to raise money to help the family offset travel and lodging costs, as well as medical expenses.
“I got on Facebook and made posts asking who wanted to play,” Lambeth said, referring to music. “Everyone I spoke to agreed to it.”
Philip Flanary of the Muskogee group Secret Society said he wanted the group to help.
“Any time a kid is sick you just want to jump in
and help,” Flanary said. “If we can play some music and make life better, we say go for it.”
Flanary said his group specializes music from the 1980s to present day.
Other benefit performers are:
• Rod Robertson Band, a northeast Oklahoma band that plays country, Red Dirt and Southern rock.
• Mason Jar Revival, known to play their own brand of Red Dirt music.
• Muskogee musician Free Kennedy and the Conspiracy.
• Native American songwriter Wes Parish, who specializes in Red Dirt, Americana and folk.
• Muskogee musicians Nathan Elkins and Billy Arnett.
Lambeth said the benefit’s silent auction will feature jewelry, gift cards, home decor and other items.

one, we’ve got someone else.”
He said he focuses mostly on early Elvis songs.
“I’m a huge fan of those,” he said. “I feel he changed a lot in later years.”
Pennington said his favorite Elvis record is one The King made for his mother.
“It was the first record he ever made, ‘My Happiness,’” Pennington said.
Pennington’s favorite Buddy Holly song is almost as touching. He said he likes the 1959 recording “Peggy Sue Got Married.”
“It was released after he died in the plane crash,” he said.
Holly was killed Feb. 2, 1959, in an Iowa plane crash.
Pennington said the Buddy Holly estate has endorsed two Holly tributes.
“I am honored to be one of them,” he said.
According to the Branson Tri-Lakes News, Pennington won a grand prize at a Midwest Tribute to the King contest, held earlier this year in Springfield, Illinois.
Pennington also performs music of George Jones, Johnny Cash and Conway Twitty, as well as gospel.
“I’m just trying to expand my repertoire,” he said.

Rockhounds, geologists, students and regional gem-hunters are gearing up for the annual Tahlequah Rock and Mineral Show and Sale on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 18-19, in the Cherokee County Community Building.
More than 20 vendors, displays and demonstrations will be set up 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, at 908 S. College Ave.
“We enjoy the show. Lots of people come in and many students,” said Maxine Woods, president of the Rock and Mineral Society.
Friday is open to schools to bring
busloads of students. Woods said letters were sent to area schools, inviting them to make reservations for groups. Saturday is more for home-schoolers.
“We’ve had schools from as far away as Arkansas,” Woods said.
The gem dig and treasure hunt are two of the most popular exhibits, Woods said. Each game costs 50 cents per play.
“In the gem dig, you use a scoop to find gems in gravel, and use a magnifying glass to help find the gems,” she said. “With the treasure hunt, you search through scoops of filling in a container to find a poker

It’s part of the Rock and Mineral Society’s mission to get kids interested in earth sciences.
“We cater to kids. They might become earth scientists, geologists,” Woods said. “And we have tons of stuff for adults, too.”
The children’s games are fun, and there is a wheel to spin for prizes for adults. A silent auction begins Friday and will be open until Saturday just before closing.
One vendor paints on rocks and another on petrified wood. Many
have rocks, minerals and gem stones for sale, and Vyrl Keeter will demonstrate flint-knapping. Members of D.D. Etchieson Methodist Church will run concessions.
Before Woods was a member of the club, she attended the shows.
“I bought a piece of gold wire and crystal jewelry the first time. It’s still one of my favorite pieces,” Woods said.
For Sally Brasel, secretary of TRAMS, the show is all about getting to see a lot of neat items on display, seeing old friends and making new friends.
“We have rocks, minerals, fossils and gemstone jewelry,” said Brasel. “One vendor from Illinois specializes in geodes, and members of the Texas
Geological Survey and University of Oklahoma Geological groups will be here to answer questions. They’re pretty knowledgeable and have literature and resources to share.”
Exhibits include Elsing Museum at Oral Roberts University, which has a rare collection of amazing gems, minerals, natural art, Indian artifacts, oriental artifacts; and the Correll Museum in Catoosa, which includes an extensive collection of rocks, minerals, fossils, bottles and jewelry collected by D.W. Correll throughout his life.
“Other people will have collections and displays, and vendors are from about six states,” said Brasel. “Members all collect and enjoy learning about fossil, rocks and min-
erals, and sharing that knowledge with others – especially students.”
One way the organization shares knowledge is with the Fossil Study Rock and Living Fossil Trees project at Heritage Elementary School in Tahlequah.
“We use the project to teach kids. It’s an ongoing project you can read about on our website, or ask me about it at the show,” said Brasel.
Admission is free for those 17 years old and younger, and $3 for those 18 and older. Each admission ticket goes into a raffle drawing.
Profits from the Tahlequah Rock and Mineral Show and Sale go toward a $1,000 scholarship TRAMS provides to a college student in the earth sciences field.

In 1990, NBC struck comedy gold with a stand-up named Jerry Seinfeld playing a fictionalized version of himself in a self-titled sitcom. Now more than a quarter century later, the Peacock Network hopes that formula will again prove fruitful with Marlon Wayans in a series premiering this week.
In “Marlon,” a half-hour family comedy premiering with back-to-back episodes on Wednesday, Aug. 16, Wayans (“In Living Color,” “Scary Movie”) stars as Marlon Wayne, a loving though immature father of youngsters Marley (newcomer Notim Taylor) and Zachery (Amir O’Neil, “Mann and Wife”), who is still adjusting to life after his amicable divorce from his very together ex-wife Ashley (Essence Atkins, “Are We There Yet?,” “A Haunted House”).
An internet star, Marlon is a larger-than-life personality whose parenting style can best be described as wellintentioned though misguided, a combination that – along with Wayans’ formidable improv skills – provides much of the comedic moments in the series.
“I’m a crazy man,” says Wayans, who is also a creator and executive producer of the series. “... There’s nothing like just coming off the cuff, trusting your instincts and bringing you to your show. And I think when you’re doing comedy like this, when it’s your name and your view, you’ve got to make sure you inject your personality and your perspective and your point of view. ... I’ve got a great cast that has fun with me and it’s like we’re jazz musicians playing some great standards and putting a whole new twist on it.”
Chief among them is Atkins, with whom Wayans has worked on many projects, among them “A Haunted House.” In that 2013 movie – in which Wayans and Atkins also starred as husband and wife – he was impressed by her ability to play along while he went off on his improvisational tangents. So when he got this series, she was the first person he thought of to play his partner in comedy.
“What I love about her,” Wayans explains, “is she has to play comedy double-dutch. Because she doesn’t know where to jump in. She don’t know how long my riff is going to be. She doesn’t know where I’m going but she stays in the scene and jumps in at the right time. She normally has something really great within her character to come back and combat it. And she always stays in the scene and keeps

it grounded and I love her for that.”
Wayans also professes admiration for O’Neil and Taylor, the two young actors who play their kids. Their laughter at many of Marlon’s riffs appears to be genuine, and Wayans says they often served as his comedic barometer, much as he did for his older brothers Keenen Ivory and Damon when he was younger and they starred in their 199094 Fox sketch comedy series “In Living Color.”
“They knew when they were doing something funny when me and (brother) Shawn were laughing (hysterically),” Wayans says. “And then they would be like, ‘OK, we’re onto something. Shawn’s got pee on his leg and Marlon’s sitting here with snot bubbles on his face. We’re onto something.’ ”

The stage may be her bread and butter but Jackie Hoffman is proving to be a formidable presence on television, too.
Recently nominated for a supporting Emmy for her role as Joan Crawford’s stone-faced housekeeper Mamacita in FX’s spring series “Feud: Bette and Joan,” the actress whose resume boasts such Broadway hits as “Xanadu,” “Hairspray” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” gets to chew a little scenery as the caustic Rachel on Hulu’s third-season comedy “Difficult People.” And it’s a role she embraces.
“It’s me at my raunchiest and filthiest and meanest, so that’s a great feeling,” the 56-year-old native of Bayside in Queens, N.Y., explains. “I get to be myself, actually.”

In “People,” Hoffman stars in the recurring role of Rachel, the sister-in-law of aspiringcomic-without-a-clue Billy Epstein (series star and co-creator Billy Eichner) and the shrewish, controlling wife of his brother Garry. Through more than a decade of traveling for “Bizarre Foods” and other shows, host Andrew Zimmern has gotten to sample the exotic dishes of here and abroad. Now, he gets to demonstrate how to make some of them in a new companion web series on TravelChannel.com.
In “Bizarre Foods in the Kitchen,” Zimmern takes to the stove in his Minneapolis studios to give brief and simple 2-3 minute how-tos on preparing dishes he’s had during his travels, ranging from Thai coconut salmon soup and Brunswick stew to chicken fried steak and a whitefish shore lunch.
“When the network wanted to do some collateral material on TravelChannel.com,” Zimmern explains, “I asked if we could do something where we cook recipes either inspired by or actually taken from the road during my trips because a lot of fans see the food and say, ‘Well, where can I eat that?’ And oftentimes I’m not eating in restaurants so I have to find a forum to show people how to make the food that is unavailable unless you’re going to the country of origin or can bump into a chuckwagon on the cowboy trail.”
One of the more interesting dishes is the Thai coconut salmon soup that he brought back from Portland, Ore., which is made from the head and collar of a whole salmon, coconut milk, galangal (a rhizome similar to ginger), kaffir lime leaves and fish sauce. Ingredients such as these may not be familiar to most viewers, but Zimmern wants to be loyal to the original recipe and he says they can be found in the Asian food section of many markets.

“The book that I’m reading right now is Amy Thielen’s ‘Give a Girl a Knife.’ ”
What did you have for dinner last night?
“For dinner last night I ate at Kosaka, which is a Japanese restaurant on 13th Street in Manhattan. A bunch of folks who used to work at Jewel Bako, one of my favorite restaurants in New York from decades ago, left there and opened up their own restaurant and it’s just remarkable, remarkable sushi.”
What is your next project?

It’s the dawn of the internet age as the fourth and final season of AMC’s tech drama “Halt and Catch Fire” gets going Saturday, Aug. 19. And that means exciting and uncertain times are ahead for the characters, including – but not limited to – AOL jokes.
“We’re finally getting into some of the information and storylines that I remember,” says Scoot McNairy, who stars as troubled computer engineer Gordon Clark, “because I guess I was like 16 and finally we hit those AOL discs. ... I remember going up to (the music store) and having to pay $15 for a CD. And I remember seeing them in the mail and going, ‘I can’t believe they’re just giving these out.’ ”
The two-hour premiere finds techies Gordon, Joe (Lee Pace), Cameron (Mackenzie Davis) and Donna (Kerry Bishé) navigating the early days of the Web and Internet browsers and pondering their personal and professional destinies as the ever-changing tech world continues to wreak havoc on their relationships. New to the cast this season is Anna Chlumsky (“Veep,” “My Girl”), who stars as Dr. Katie Herman, chief ontologist and a key figure in this season’s Search business venture; and Susanna Skaggs as Gordon’s daughter Haley.
“We pick up in Season 4 and Gordon’s in a really good place,” McNairy explains. “He’s sort of gotten a team together, and Joe and Cameron and Gordon are sort of working together to start a new company. And you get to obviously see the hurdles and the heads

butting as the three of them work together. We have some new characters that get introduced who become very, very predominant characters, some of which get really close to Gordon’s character.”
For McNairy, primarily a film actor whose credits include “Argo,” “Our Brand Is Crisis” and “Non-Stop,” “Halt” represents his first television series. He calls playing Gordon for four seasons a “100 percent” satisfying experience and is grateful to AMC for allowing the cast and crew bring closure to the story.
“Every season we did, we never knew if we were coming back,” he says, “and every season we did, we left sort of open-ended in case we didn’t need to come back. So that’s always an unsettling feeling when you’re not getting closure on your character, and I feel like this fourth season it was very generous of AMC to give us a (definite end) so that we could wrap it up. And I think Chris (Cantwell, the showrunner) just did an incredible job putting a bookend to this story.”
“We worked with one of the best crews I’ve ever worked with,” he continues. “Everyone was so generous and compassionate toward each other, and they all worked so damn hard on the show and so many hours, that I really had a wonderful time coming to work every day and hanging out with and being around these people. And yes, the character played a huge part in that, but ... I knew how great they were when I was working with them, but when you leave them, that’s what stays with me the most.”

Oscar nominee Jennifer Jason Leigh (“The Hateful Eight”), Michael Rapaport (“The War at Home”) and Amy Okuda (“How to Get Away With Murder”) head a solid cast.

The stress, chaos and absurdity of working on a technical team in live theater is front and center in this eight-episode comedy series from Upright Comedy Brigade alum Jaime Mac. The entire series was made over a single weekend with a budget of $500. John Michael Jalonen, Paul Bourgeois, Shelby Smith and Mac are in the large cast.

Everyone in NASCAR’s Monster Energy Cup Series knows it’s just a matter of time before Chase Elliott finds himself in Victory Lane. After three straight second place finishes at Michigan International Speedway, including earlier this season, it could be safe to speculate that it could happen Sunday, August 13 when the Pure Michigan 400 airs on NBCSN.
Elliott, who is the son of NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliott, has had his share of success in both the Camping World Truck Series and Xfinity Series, including a Truck Series win at Martinsville back in April. As of this writing he was sixth in the Monster Energy Cup Series points standings with six top-five finishes and 11 top-tens. His most notable accomplishment thus far in his young career may be his two consecutive poles at the Daytona 500, including being the youngest driver to start from the pole at the age of 20 in 2016.
He’s been brilliant at Michigan, and were it not for the equally successful Kyle Larson and Joey Logano, Elliott may have earned his first Cup series victory already. Larson has won the past two races at Michigan with Logano winning the first race there in 2016. Each had Elliott on their tail when they crossed the finish line.
The young Elliott drives for a team and owner that are used to winning. Jimmie Johnson’s success with Hendrick Motorsports speaks for itself, as does the that of Jeff Gordon, who drove the number 24 car before his retirement, creating the opportunity for Elliott to step in.

There’s still a while to go before the late-night staple returns for its new season, but the news cycle definitely hasn’t stopped over the summer, prompting a four-week primetime run for one of “SNL’s” most popular elements. Oh, yes, there will be surfboards ... and, as usual, they’ll be presented as “trophies” to the winners of these honors, chosen by fans via online and social-media means. Among the television, movie, music and sports contests, two categories — Choice Throwback TV Show (think “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” or “One Tree Hill,” both nominated) and Choice Latin Artist — are new this year. The now-ended “Pretty Little Liars” is the top TV nominee, with seven bids.
8 p.m. on TNT Will
Will (Laurie Davidson) turns to a beautiful and talented friend for help as the theater’s survival hangs by a thread in the new episode “What Dreams May Come.” Elsewhere, an existential crisis compels Marlowe (Jamie Campbell Bower) to return to the very sketchy company of Edward Kelly (Zubin Varla), while Alice (Olivia DeJonge) uses similarly questionable judgment as she seeks comfort
With his brother Damon Wayans Sr. enjoying series success with “Lethal Weapon,” fellow “In Living Color” alum Marlon Wayans also tries weekly television again with this new sitcom loosely based on his own life. The “Pilot” introduces him as a divorced father very involved in raising his children with his exwife (Essence Atkins), though his guidance is sometimes questionable. Well, OK: Make that “often” questionable. Another episode follows.

BY JOHN CROOK

BY GEORGE DICKIE @ZAP2IT.COM
A teen on the autism spectrum navigates the already challenging times of adolescence in a promising new comedy series recently premiered on Netflix.
In “Atypical,” an eight-episode half-hour series, Keir Gilchrist (“United States of Tara,” “It’s Kind of a Funny Story”) stars as Sam Gardner, an 18-year-old who like any other teen seeks love, acceptance and independence but his condition at times can make that difficult, especially when it comes to meeting girls.
The idea of Sam becoming more independent is anathema to his mom, Elsa (Jennifer Jason Leigh, “Revenge,” “The Hateful Eight”), who thinks this vulnerable boy, that she’s nurtured through all his trials, will self-destruct out in the real world. But dad Doug (Michael Rapaport, “The War at Home,” “Sully”) wouldn’t mind seeing his son become more independent, especially since Elsa has given their marriage short shrift ever since Sam was diagnosed. And sister Casey (Bridgette Lundy-Paine, “Irrational Man”) just finds her older brother extremely annoying, but she has no problem getting in the face of anyone who gives him trouble.
The series is a passion project for creator/showrunner Robia Rashid (“How I Met Your Mother,” “The Goldbergs”), who is close to someone on the spectrum and wanted to create something that treated the subject with respect without resorting to clichés.
“I was very interested in the idea that more and more people are getting diagnosed as being on the spectrum and diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder),” she explains. “And so now there’s this group of young people who know that they’re on the spectrum and that they’re interested in all the same things that any young person is: dating and connecting and independence. And I just thought that was a really interesting point of view for a story about coming of age and finding love.”
The humorous opening sequence illustrates Sam’s thought patterns. He’s sitting, back straight up, on a bus because he’s afraid to touch the back of the seat, but he realizes it must be OK because others are sitting back. He also surmises they must have thicker skin on their backs, much like Antarctic cod, which then makes him think of antifreeze in fish. That thought makes him laugh out loud as the other passengers look at him quizzically.
“If the comedy is going to come out of character,” Robia explains, “then it’s going to be pretty natural. I think that there are some real laugh-out-loud moments in this show, but it’s not a show where we would sit there and be like, ‘We need a joke in this spot. Because it’s a comedy, there are not enough jokes on this page.’ It’s all hopefully very natural in its comedy and its dramatic moments. It comes out of the storyline and it comes out of the characters.”
