Cassandra Gaines Pavilion to be dedicated Saturday

Musicians honor community leader through a dedication concert

Blues musician Dylan Whitney says Cassandra Gaines helped develop his early music career.

“She was a wonderful lady,” Whitney said. “I first met her when I was at the Roxy Theater and I started talking to her.”

Gaines, who died Oct. 22, managed and promoted the Civic Center and Roxy Theater for many years. She also promoted Black Music Month performances each June in Muskogee.

“She really had a focus on young people. She had programs and people she could connect them with.”

Whitney said he’s honored to perform at the dedication.

“Cassandra has blessed me so much, I want to give back,” he said.

Singer Starr Fisher said Gaines was dedicated to uplifting Muskogee and its youth.

“She was all about community and building up people,” Fisher said.

Saxophonist Jermaine Mondaine said performing at the dedication will be like celebrating with family.

Entries in the Motors for Murrow Classic Car Show will face tough judging this Saturday.

Murrow Home children will do the judging.

The car show runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Murrow Indian Children’s Home.

Murrow Home Board President

Chris Martin said the show will feature cars and motorcycles from as far away as Miami, Oklahoma. Martin manages Vintage Iron Motorcycle Museum in Miami. “Murrow is one of the only homes specifically for Native American children,” Martin said. “It provides a safe, loving environment for children facing abuse or neglect. Martin said he’s encouraging car clubs to come to the Murrow Home on Saturday. Entrants can register their cars from 9 a.m. to noon. Fee is $10, plus a consumable item children or staff members can use.

People can view the cars for free.

“But we definitely encourage people to donate items on the needs list,” Martin said.

Trophies will be awarded to the top 10 entries.

“Kids at the home will judge who wins,” Martin said. “And kids actually make the trophies.”

Martin said he is bringing a cycle or two from the museum. One cycle is his 2003 Indian, with engravings on the metal.

Also featured will be a red, white and blue 1938 Chevy roadster, owned by auto enthusiast Carroll Johnston, he said.

The home’s Soaring Eagle gift shop will be open during the show.

“The shop has new shirts, Native American jewelry,” Martin said.

Murrow Executive Director Betty Martin, no relation to Chris, said the event will help make people aware of the home.

“A lot of people say, “Murrow Home? Where’s that? Tahlequah?’” Betty Martin said.

She said the Murrow Home also welcomes the donations.

“We use a lot of consumable supplies,” she said.

Murrow office manager Cindy Short said the home is housing 20 children and youth from ages 3 to 17.

One 17-year-old resident is in Murrow’s transition program, where he learns to develop independent living skills.

sister to my parents.”

Mondaine said his mother taught Gaines how to cook soul food. He said his father’s love for entertaining inspired her to promote musicians.

“She took my mother’s soul food cooking and my father’s love for entertaining to a whole new level.”

Singer Starr Fisher also will perform.

Ward IV Councilor Marlon Coleman had recommended a plaque honoring Gaines be placed at the pavilion.

“A lot of people in the community viewed her as their champion,” Coleman said. “She chose to make Muskogee a great community. She did a lot to promote the Civic Center even when she didn’t have the budget to do it.”

Gaines showed such skill when The Gap Band performed at Love-Hatbox Sports Complex last June, Coleman said.

Gaines’ daughter, Aanje Gaines Wilkerson, said the Civic Center pavilion is an appropriate place to bear Cassandra Gaines’ name.

“I remember during Black Music Month, we’d take our lawn chairs out there,” Wilkerson said, referring to performances in previous years.

Wilkerson said Saturday’s performances will feature a variety of styles.

“Dylan Whitney will have a little blues, Starr Fisher will have a little rhythm and blues,” Wilkerson said.

She said she feels honored, yet bittersweet about the dedication.

“It shows all her work in the community is appreciated,” Wilkerson said.

“You never know the impact you have on a person’s life. She would really appreciate this.”

Living history program set at Murrell Home

Historic site reflects its mid-1800s past during

A young woman sits in the shade of a wide porch, her long skirt swept to the side and out of the way as she pulls wool through a spinning wheel.

In the nearby garden, a farmer searches through vegetation for tomatoes and peppers for the next meal. Across the lawn, a young blacksmith heats iron over an open flame, then pounds it with a hammer to the desired shape.

Images of the George M. Murrell Home Historic Site and its mid1800s past are reflected during the monthly Third Saturday Living History programs, held 1-4 p.m.

Nestled near Tahlequah in historic Park Hill at 19479 E. Murrell Home Road, the only antebellum plantation in the state is also known as Hunter’s Home.

Historical interpreter Jennifer Frazee considers working at the historic home her dream job.

“Visitors who show up to this event can tour the home on their own, with the aid of our great exhibit panels, or we are happy to show them around. This place has a way of getting under a person’s skin, and I’m sure any one of us staff could talk about it all day,” said Frazee.

Staff and volunteers host Third Saturdays as a way to get visitors a little more involved in the history of the Murrell Home and enable them to participate in that history, according to Frazee.

“We want visitors to have a good time while learning about this great heritage and culture and having them help us do some of the crafts, chores, and day-to-day tasks of an antebellum farm seems like a fun way to do that,” she said.

The time period is 1840s to 1860s, though staffers have done

event

things from the 1870s as well.

“We would love for the community to come out and visit us anytime we are open. We always look forward to having company,” she said.

They are now expanding the living history programming and are eager for everyone to get involved, Frazee added.

“We have many volunteer opportunities for those who need volunteer hours for scholarships, schools, community service hours, or even if they would just like to get more involved in their community. Just give me a call, or come by the house, and we can get them signed up,” she said. “We do run year-round as long as the weather holds. Usually, if it is too hot or inclement weather prevents us from doing what we planned, I’ll figure out an inside activity to do. I think we only cancelled it once when we got that heavy snow and sleet a couple years ago.”

June 17 was originally supposed to be laundry day, but the weather was brutal, so Lisa Rutherford pulled out the tape loom and showed visitors how to weave, according to Frazee.

Living history events such as May Day and the Antique Agricultural Festival, Oct. 6-8, draw on members of the Oklahoma Historical Society and specialists from other sites come to share their expertise.

The annual Murrell Home Ghost Stories program is Oct. 27-28. Reservations for that event begin in September.

“They fill up fast, too, so don’t wait to get those,” she said. “We will have our annual Open House on Dec. 10, as well. That is a fun time to try delicious foods made from 19th-century recipes and pass a good time in a festive atmosphere.”

Many Third Saturdays are holiday-themed. In January, there will be a valentine card mini-workshop so people will have their cards ready for Valentine’s Day. The couple of months leading up to Christmas, they do ornaments or Christmas cards.

This year, organizers are breaking away from that theme in honor of

the World War I anniversary. People will come out to talk about their relatives’ service, and on Third Saturday, guests will learn to make poppy flowers.

Previous programs have included drop spinning, printing on canvas floor coverings, and Victorian valentine cards. The next program on July 15 is making sailboats, which visitors can float in the creek at the rear of the property. Aug. 19 will feature spinning, Sept. 16 highlights farm chores, Oct. 21 shows off gardening and-or fiber arts, Nov. 12 is poppy-making time, and Dec. 16 will

offer Christmas ornament crafts.

The George M. Murrell Home is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.

Earth’s residents seek ‘Salvation’ from an asteroid

“ It’s not the end of the world” is a popular phrase, but don’t use it on the makers of “Salvation.”

In the tradition of such tales as “Armageddon” and “Deep Impact,” the CBS summer drama –premiering Wednesday, July 12 – puts Earth in peril from an approaching asteroid. Relatively few people know at first, challenging a Pentagon press secretary (played by “Tyrant” alum Jennifer Finnigan) to keep the information from her loved ones. Santiago Cabrera (“Big Little Lies”) and Charlie Rowe (“Red Band Society”) respectively play the tech genius and the MIT grad student who give her the news about the collision

expected to happen six months later.

Now expecting her first child with her actor husband Jonathan Silverman (“Weekend at Bernie’s”), the lively and friendly Finnigan admits she’s never been a particular fan of doomsday sagas, “not even a little. Before even reading the script, I read the log line (or brief synopsis), and I think I probably rolled my eyes. But when I read it, it was such a good script. I thought it was sharp, with great suspense and political intrigue and a little levity in there. It really surprised me.”

Finnigan also embraced her “Salvation” character, giving her a big change of pace from FX’s consistently grim “Tyrant,” on which

she admits she “almost felt like a prop” the first two seasons. “After a very powerful Season 3, I swore that I would never allow myself to take another job where I wasn’t guaranteed the female character would be essential to the core story ... powerful and strong.”

Sealing the deal for Finnigan (who won three consecutive Daytime Emmys for “The Bold and the Beautiful”) was her first meeting with “Salvation’s” showrunners, Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro, “whom I fell madly in love with. They had such a sharp vision for the show, and they were very invested in making it a pleasant, happy environment. They wanted this grounded; they wanted politics to come into play, they wanted love stories

Jennifer Finnigan stars in “Salvation,” premiering Wednesday on CBS.

and human stories, and everything they said just made sense to me.”

A big personal bonus awaited Finnigan, too: “Then they told me that Jonny’s (Silverman) dad, the rabbi, married them 25 years ago! Is that crazy? I thought, ‘Well, that’s kind of an amazing connection.’ That actually was the clincher.

“They also were vary passionate about me being involved,” adds the actress, “and after being in this business for a really long time, to have two kind and intelligent people who are good at what they do want to work with you, it was really nice. I felt like I was going to be working for people who appreciate what I do, and everybody should want that. And everybody should have that.”

For Mario Lopez, hosting the new CBS game show “Candy Crush” starting Sunday, July 9, is just a natural extension of what he already does.

“Well, I love games; I’m a big game guy,” the 43-year-old actor and presenter explains, “whether it’s game boards or just (having) a game night at my house. And I’ve been on all the game shows on TV and just a huge fan generally speaking and was a fan of (the mobile game) ‘Candy Crush’ and thought it would be a lot of fun.

“It’s family entertainment and there’s no better feeling than giving away money to people. So I wanted to give it a shot and people had a great time on it. ... But what I discovered was some of the other people that I know are playing it, people from like hardcore guys at my boxing gym to high-level executives. It was very surprising.”

In the TV incarnation of “Crush,” players compete on enormous, interactive game boards, trying to match colorful candies in combinations of three or more to win points, defeat obstacles and progress through more than 2,000 levels. The competitor who advances the farthest is crowned champion.

“I like the competition factor,” Lopez says, “and people that were so passionate about the game. And you get to team up, whether it’s with your son or significant other, a parent, whatever the case may be – you get an opportunity to win $100,000 every week, so

that was fun giving that away, seeing people’s lives change.”

Cake sculptors take on all designs in Food Network’s ‘Texas Cake House’

Take a look at the website of cake artists Natalie and Dave Sideserf of Food Network’s “Texas Cake House” and one gets the feeling they’re looking at works from Madame Tussaud’s.

On its homepage, in addition to the bleeding human heart, the T-bone steak and the unicorn, there are spookily realistic-looking cake likenesses of Willie Nelson, LeBron James, Elvira Mistress of the Dark, plus two stars from one of their favorite TV series, Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks of “Better Call Saul.”

The Sideserfs made the cakes for AMC to appear in a “Saul” commercial and they got the attention of Banks himself.

“He actually was recently on ‘Conan’ and he thanked me by name,” Natalie Sideserf says. “They showed a picture of the cake and he said, ‘I never had a chance to reach out to Natalie Sideserf but I wanted to thank her for making that.’ And it was really, really awesome. I was very surprised.”

The Austin-based husband-and-wife team return for the series’ second season Monday, July 10, with more intricate designs and more adventures in high-end cake-making. Natalie, who has a degree in fine arts from Ohio State and a background in sculpting, creates the designs while Dave, who left his IT job to help, runs the business – when he’s not assisting with the cakes.

Business is booming and so as the season begins, they’re in the process of opening a storefront after years of baking out of their home. The opener sees the couple working on two projects: a jaguar for

“Getting used to working with something like that and having it raise and making sure that the flavor is good (was challenging),” Natalie says. “Not that cricket flour tastes bad but the idea is we want it to taste like cake and that nobody can even tell that it’s made of crickets. So that was our goal.”

“And rather than covering up the taste of the cricket flour,” Dave adds, “... we came up with a recipe that really kind of features it and used it a way that was complementary to the flavors, not something we were trying to bury beneath something else.”

Liz Jenkins (“Torchwood”) and Molly Fite (“Halfway House”) are the creators and stars of this comedy series that follows the adventures of two Los Angeles best friends who can’t seem to hold down a job. Over the course of the series, the duo try a slew of different occupations, from sign-twirling and dog-walking to ride-sharing and dressing up for kids’ parties, but none seem to work out. Seemingly they’re unsuitable for anything.

Few would argue that William Shakespeare is the greatest writer the world has ever produced, but he didn’t attain that lofty stature overnight.

In “Will,” the lavish and vibrant new period drama series premiering Monday, July 10, on TNT, we see Shakespeare (newcomer Laurie Davidson) as a 24-yearold country boy, arriving in boisterous 16th-century London to seek his fortunes as a playwright. He’s fairly confident, but it doesn’t take long for the local theater folk to take him down a peg or two.

“We wanted to bring Shakespeare back to the people, to show that he wasn’t this boring, fully fledged middle-age genius,” explains creator and executive producer Craig Pearce, a frequent collaborator with Australian director Baz Luhrmann. “At one point, he was a young guy trying to create his own destiny, making mistakes, not knowing the right path to choose, falling in love with the wrong person, all those things. He was constantly having to choose between duty vs. heart, family vs. career – things

that so many of us struggle with on a daily basis.”

Elizabethan-era London would have been a revelatory world for the roughedged Shakespeare, Pearce adds, although few factual details are known about the playwright. Putting Shakespeare into this colorful and exciting environment offered rich dramatic potential, although Pearce also did copious research to ensure his speculative story lines remained fixed in reality.

Davidson, who was still a teenager in drama school when he landed the title role, says he loves how “Will” resonates for a modern audience despite its 400-year-old setting.

“The aim is not to do anything that would alienate the audience from Shakespeare,” Davidson says. “The language is very important in that. It gives people a sense of this world, while still being accessible. Some people think of Shakespeare as something that’s strictly for intellectuals, and it shouldn’t be that

at all. He was unique in that his plays had characters from all walks of life.”

He also loves the costumes, which take recognizable Elizabethan styles and elevate them to convey the “rock ‘n’ roll” sensibility of these poets, actors and playwrights.

“(The costumes) are really important to give a modern audience a sense of how cool these people were and Elizabeth London was,” Davison says. “You had the punks, the more poetic types, the Christopher Marlowes of this world with their pointed shoes. It just grounds the story in a modern audience’s mind as being something exciting whilst also clearly being something from the Elizabethan era. Poets were the rock stars of this era, and the costumes really help the audience to make the leap into that world.”

In a sense, Pearce says, “Will” exists in both the past and the present.

“People tend to be the same across time and geography and culture,” he says. “That’s a really good lesson. that the things that bind us are far greater and should be far stronger than the things that divide us.”

Royals’ Pérez enjoys view from behind the plate at MLB All-Star game

Salvador Pérez appears to be headed for his fifth MLB All-Star game when the mid-summer classic airs Tuesday, July 11, on Fox. The fourtime All-Star catcher for the Kansas City Royals was the leading votegetter among catchers in the American League and will most likely be behind the plate for the AL when the game gets under way.

The seven-year veteran who has spent all of his time with the Royals has seen a lot thus far in his career. Although his team is struggling this year, it is not for Perez’s lack of production as he is statistically one of the best catchers in baseball, and has been in recent seasons. At the time of this writing he was leading all catchers in both home runs and doubles while maintaining an on-base-percentage of well over .300.

A native of Venezuela, Pérez was scouted and signed by the Royals when he was just 16-years-old; receiving a contract for $65,000. He made his MLB debut in 2011, making an immediate impact behind the plate and at bat. His endurance has him starting more games behind the plate than many others at his position, although he’ll play first base on rare occurrence.

Perez blossomed in the 2015 World Series, which the Royals won over the New York Mets in five games. He would earn World Series MVP honors in 2015 and go on to earn his first Silver Slugger Award in 2016.

NETFLIX COMEDY EXPLORES THE ENDURING BONDS AMONG ‘FRIENDS FROM COLLEGE’

Adultery, drugs, a little regression and a whole lot of soul searching – it’s all part of the lives of a group of 40-somethings facing down middle age in a promising new series premiering this week on Netflix.

In “Friends From College,” which begins streaming Friday, July 14, that group is a tight-knit circle of Harvard grads, most of whom have settled into successful careers in New York City. They’re led by Ethan (Keegan-Michael Key, “Key and Peele”), a struggling writer who has recently moved from Michigan with wife Lisa (Cobie Smulders, “How I Met Your Moth-

er”), a former ACLU attorney who reluctantly takes a job with a testosterone-driven hedge fund. On top of trying to get a novel published, Ethan and Lisa are trying to conceive a child.

At the same time, Ethan has been engaged in an ongoing 20-year dalliance with Sam (Annie Parisse, “Law & Order”), an interior designer married to Joe (Greg Germann, “Ally McBeal”). There is also Max (Fred Savage, “The Wonder Years”), a literary agent who is in a relationship with surgeon Felix (Billy Eichner, “Parks and Recreation”); Marianne (Jae Suh

Park, “Adam Ruins Everything”), an actress more interested in living an artistic life than in making money; and Nick (Nat Faxon, “The Way Way Back”), the playboy of the group and Lisa’s confidante.

As the series opens, a clumsy tryst gives way to Ethan announcing to Sam that he and Lisa are moving back to the big city. He’s clearly excited at the prospect of having the gang back together again but to her, it means their affair must end. And her unhappiness about it is written all over her face.

“They think of it as a college hook-up that never ended,” explains showrunner Nicholas Stoller (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “Get Him to the Greek”), who created the series with wife Francesca Delbanco. “And basically since they graduated, like once a year they get together – because they’re both married – in like a hotel for a night and just kind of hook up, and they don’t think of it as an affair.

“They’re wrong; it is an affair,” he continues, laughing, “but (they don’t think it is) mainly because they’ve known each other since before they knew either of their spouses. And in the pilot ... it’s going to change the dynamic of their hook-up and make it clear to both of them that it’s an affair.”

The thing is, neither adulterer’s marriage is unhappy. In fact, Ethan and Lisa, and Sam and Joe seem quite content in each other’s company. They’re just seeking something in addition to what a monogamous relationship has to offer.

The series is a personal project for Stoller and Delbanco, both Harvard grads who maintain strong ties to their friends from college.

“Which means that we support and love each other but we also all regress when we’re around each other and act like we were back in college,” Stoller says. “The show is obviously the extreme version of that but it just seems like an interesting thing that weirdly isn’t in a show right now or in a movie. So it just seemed like a fun thing and something we’ve talked about a lot in regard to our own friends.”
