Michael Phelps will be among the athletes parading into Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium during the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics Friday on NBC. THIS WEEK

Week of July 31 - August 6, 2016

Rio takes center stage for 2016 Summer Olympics

Rio de Janeiro – the mere mention of this Brazilian resort city conjures mental images of spectacular mountains, gorgeous beaches and worldclass festivals. And starting this week, it becomes synonymous with state-of-the-art sporting competition as host of the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Friday, Aug. 5, NBC, NBC Sports Network, Golf Channel, CNBC, MSNBC, USA Network and NBCOlympics.com begin 17 days and more than 6,700 hours of coverage of the 31st Olympiad as more than 10,500 athletes from 206 nations parade through Rio’s Maracana Stadium for the Opening Ceremonies.

Much has been made of Rio’s problems in the run-up to these Games: crime, polluted waterways, a foundering economy, a presidential impeachment, infrastructure issues, the threat of terrorism and, of course, the Zika virus, factors that have caused a number of people, athletes among them, to reconsider their plans to come to Rio.

NBC’s Dan Patrick isn’t one of them. As the host of the

network’s daytime coverage, he’ll be in Rio for three weeks and is so confident in NBC’s preparations that he’s even bringing his family. Still, he understands the concerns people have and why athletes such as golfers Jason Day and Rory McIlroy might want to take a pass on these Games.

“You have guys who are professionals who have made a lot of money, so their income future is not dependent on how they do in the Olympics,” he says. “I think anybody who’s worked their entire life to get to this point, their approach is different than Rory or Jason. And look, that’s their prerogative. I’m not here to judge if you go or don’t go because it’s an individual choice but I do think it might be easier for those athletes to not go than it would be for somebody who’s worked their whole life to be in the 4x400 relay. You know, that’s all they have.”

“(It’s) a shame because you’ve got golf in the Olympics and just to have that platform there and not have the best in the world be a part of it, that’s disheartening,” he says. “But you’ll still get storylines.”

The CW keeps the ‘Constantine’ dream alive

Fans of John Constantine (Matt Ryan) shouldn’t lose hope for the TV show’s future just yet, even if it has been canceled for over a year.

The CW Seed recently started streaming all 13 episodes of “Constantine” for free, fueling rumors that the series might not be done for good. After repeat appearances on “Arrow,” it’s possible that Constantine could still find a home on The CW instead of NBC, who chose to cut the series short.

The CW has steadily been ramping up their DC superhero lineup, with “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Legends of Tomorrow” and, most recently, “Supergirl.” At this point, adding a revitalized “Constantine” to the slate doesn’t seem totally out of the question,

And one of those storylines is certain to be Michael Phelps. At 31, the 22-time gold medalist is certainly the graybeard of the U.S. men’s swim team but he doesn’t appear to be slowing down, at least judging by his record performances at last year’s U.S. Nationals. Phelps has also had his problems since the 2012 Games, a drunken driving conviction among them, but Patrick sees a different Michael Phelps this time around.

“To listen to his perspective now,” Patrick says, “I do think going to rehab opened him up because he wasn’t a very forthcoming interview . But you almost get that feeling of he understands it and he understands it before it’s too late where he didn’t get this opportunity to enjoy it, to appreciate it. So I kind of hear and see a different Michael Phelps than I did before. But as far as the performer, you know he might get humbled in these Games. Who knows?”

“But it’s nice for him to have a curtain call like this,” he continues, “and hopefully he gets that opportunity to take a couple of bows.”

even if the comic-book inspired schedule is already close to bursting at this point.

Would it be too much DC to add another hour of superhero programming to the roster? Maybe.

If so, we’ve got a compelling alternative theory to combat that notion. A whole hour of “Constantine” on The CW might be out of the question, but who’s to say we can’t just add the demon-fighting expert to one of the pre-existing shows?

The logistics of rights and ownership might be tricky to handle, but that issue has been surmounted once before, meaning it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Constantine has a past with Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) on “Arrow,” and we’re sure the kids on “The Flash” would be able to use his skills to combat meta-humans.

And speaking of realms, if anyone can cross the multi-verse to appear on “Supergirl,” our money would be on the magical expert who found his way into the afterlife to bring Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) back to life.

Or maybe Constantine could do the most good on “Legends of Tomorrow,” traveling through time and space? After losing a few team members in Season 1, they might need to fill out their ranks again. With the crossover potential hitting a new high for the network, The CW doesn’t seem to be done playing with the idea of taking on “Constantine.” So, until their DC shows stop raking in viewers by the millions, we’ll keep a watchful eye out for John and his dark methods of mystical crime-fighting.

Dan Patrick is a studio host for coverage of the 2016 Summer Olympics, which start with the Opening Ceremony Friday on NBC.

‘The Chew’s’ Carla Hall forgoes sleep to open a restaurant

Don’t let anybody fool you – running a restaurant is hard, hard work.

There’s buying the food, making the menu, hiring and managing staff, advertising, doing the books and putting out fires – literally and figuratively. It truly takes everything a person has and then some to make an eatery successful.

And then if you’re just getting a restaurant off the ground, that’s twice the work, as Carla Hall of ABC’s weekday culinary series “The Chew” knows. Earlier this year, the 52-year-old co-host, chef and cookbook author brought her Carla Hall’s Southern Kitchen to life in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, N.Y., And she did it while she was shooting the show.

Needless to say, sleep was at a premium.

“We actually opened on Memorial Day,” she says, “so (the preparations took place) the month leading up to it and then on Memorial Day. So I was doing both and I was just more tired than I have ever been in my life. Twenty-hour days – it was really crazy. ... I was sleeping in my dressing room during our breaks, and you know it wasn’t sustainable. I was really tired. Whenever I sat down, I was just falling asleep. But I did that for a month.”

Now that the restaurant is up and running, Hall reports that everything is going well, customers are coming in the door and she’s getting more rest. This is her second location (the first is a kiosk at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center) and her star dish is the hot chicken, which is fried chicken tossed in hot spicy oil and spices including cayenne and habanero powder – depending on the customer’s desired level of heat.

Yes, it can be spicy but Hall maintains it’s not hot for the sake of being hot, as some chicken wings can be.

“I think people eat spicy food for sport,” she says, “but we want it to be enjoyable and not be gratuitously hot and to have some flavor. So we’ve balanced our spice with fruit, so it’s either banana powder or mango powder or pineapple powder. So it’s not gratuitously hot.”

5:00 p.m. KRSU Twice as Good Stone crab with mustard sauce. (In Stereo)

“I’m reading a couple of things (laughs). I’m reading two books are one time, which is crazy. I just finished Shonda Rhimes’ ‘A Year of Yes.’ And I’m also reading ‘The Bell Jar.’ ”

What is your next project?

“I’m working on my third cookbook.”

What did you have for dinner last night?

“For dinner, I was on a plane from Vegas so I had the snack pack on the plane ... so it was hummus and cheese and crackers and olives and almonds.”

When was your last vacation, where and why? “I just left Vegas to celebrate my husband’s 50th birthday.”

At this year’s Teen Choice awards, there will be Justice.

Actually, Victoria Justice has been making her mark on Fox in many ways lately. The former “Victorious” and “Eye Candy” star recently appeared in two episodes of “Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life”; she’ll be the new Janet in the network’s October revision of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”– plus, she joins WWE superstar and “American Grit” host John Cena to guide Teen Choice 2016 when Fox broadcasts the annual event Sunday, July 31, from The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. Serayah (“Empire”) and Charlie Puth will perform, and Justin Timberlake will receive the Decade Award for career evolution.

Justice reigns Justice as Victoria co- as cohosts annual Teen Choice honors

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” forecasts Justice, who was a Teen Choice nominee herself for “choice smile” in 2010. “And it’s usually really hot. I have memories of being on the red carpet every time I go to Teen Choice and feeling like my face is melting off, but it’s fun because I’m around a lot of my peers. It’s good to see old friends and get to reconnect with people, and to make new friends. It’s a good time, and I think you have a great collection of talent that will be there.”

Rob Corddry OF “BALLERS”

ON HBO

Victoria Justice

Those stars span the worlds of movies, television, music, sports, fashion and social media. In terms of TV series, “Pretty Little Liars” tops the Teen Choice nominees this year with six bids, while movie superheroes clearly are big with young content consumers since “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Captain America: Civil War” lead the film categories with four nominations each. Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez also are in a tie in music, with each up for three awards.

As usual, a surfboard will be the “trophy” for Teen Choice winners. “I think it’s pretty awesome,” Justice says. “I wonder if it’s really functional. That would be really cool, to take your Teen Choice board out and ride the waves.” More clothing than that entails will be on Justice’s mind on Teen Choice night, though, as she’s likely to have several costume changes: “That’s really exciting for me because I love fashion. Hopefully, I’ll get to do a few good looks.”

It’s more than coincidence for Justice to be doing so much work for Fox these days, since she reports, “I have a holding and development deal with them, and I’m excited to see where that goes.” Her Teen Choice presence suggests “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” will get sufficient promotion that night, and with the filming of the remake completed, she’s eager to see the final product herself. “It was such an incredible experience,” Justice reflects. “I’ve been a fan of ‘Rocky Horror’ since I was in fifth grade, so when I found out that they were remaking it on Fox, I called my agent and said, ‘I have to get in the room for this. I have to be a part of this.’ It was surreal, after I auditioned and screentested, getting the role of Janet Weiss and being part of such an iconic project.”

Valerie Bertinelli of “Valerie’s Home Cooking” on Food Network

“I record ‘Full Frontal With Samantha Bee.’ I love her. ... I have ‘Giada in Italy’ on there. I have Ina Garten. I have ‘Pioneer Woman.’ I have a bunch of different ones. I have ‘Game of Thrones.’ I have a very eclectic DVR.”

What did you learn during your years on “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart”?

I learned a lot. It’s hard to quantify it. I learned how to write a joke by watching Jon Stewart do it or watching him craft one and surprise me with it. And I learned how to be confident in front of a camera. I found comfort. I learned a lot about satire in general and how powerful it can be and also how silly it is. And we were often accused of being an actual, viable source of news, which I took no responsibility for at the time and still don’t. But that was a weird thing to come to terms with.

Other cast members have said he challenged them and made them better. What that the same for you?

Yeah, absolutely. That’s a good way to say it because the show is very much his voice, like there’s a team of writers but after rehearsal he will tweak and twist and rewrite a lot of the show in a way that you just didn’t see before, and it’s fun to watch that. ... You know, we would do these field pieces where we’d go out and interview some lunatic and then come back with a story and put it together. And having Jon in the edit (room), we always dreaded it because we probably knew where the problems were but we didn’t know how to fix them and he would challenge us to fix them, basically, to make it better, and he always, always would.

Brett Eldredge of “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock” on ABC

“ ‘Mr. Robot’ is my favorite. It has a dark undertone that keeps me hooked; when I watch it, I feel anxious. And I also watch ‘Vikings’ and the ‘Shark Week’ shows and TLC.”

Ian Ziering of “Sharknado: The 4th Awakens” on Syfy “ ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Shameless,’ ‘Falling Skies,’ ‘The Strain,’ my wife watches ‘Once Upon a Time’ and I watch that with her ... but mostly, we’re in bed at 9:00. I mean, we’ve got two little babies, so we’re done.”

Thomas Rhett of “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock” on ABC

“I’m addicted to ‘Suits,’ and I feel like we live for Sunday nights watching ‘Game of Thrones.’ I’m obsessed with that show. And we got into ‘Downton Abbey,’ which you probably wouldn’t think I’d watch, for a long time.”

Kevin Harvick has been at or near the top of NASCAR’s Sprint Cup points standings for most of the season and will be looking for a solid finish at the Pennsylvania 400, which airs from Pocono Raceway on Sunday, July 31 on NBCSN. The 2014 Sprint Cup Series champion started the 2016 racing season with 13 top ten finishes in the first 17 races. Seven of those were top five finishes including Harvick’s sole victory this season at the Good Sam 500 in March at Phoenix International Raceway.

Harvick is one of those drivers who literally burst on the scene with Richard Childress Racing. After winning the Busch Series Rookie of the Year in 2000 Childress had plans to develop Harvick in the Winston Cup Series.

Dale Earnhartd’s death at Daytona in 2001 changed everything and Harvick quickly found himself in the spotlight after winning at Atlanta just three weeks after Earnhardt’s passing.

He has since been a household name among NASCAR fans winning some of the biggest races, including both the Daytona 500 and NEXTEL All-Star Challenge in 2007, the 2003 Brickyard 400, and a pair of wins (2011, 2013) at Charlotte’s Coca-Cola 600. He finally won a Sprint Cup title in 2014.

At Poconno Raceway Harvick has had mixed results. In 31 races he’s had seven top five finishes, including two second place finishes in the past five races. He finished ninth at the Axalta ‘We Paint Winners’ 400 there back in early June.

CHRIS HARRISON

C H R I S H A R R I S O N

“The Bachelorette” may be about to end again, but – as usual – Chris Harrison’s work is hardly done.

Right after JoJo Fletcher makes her decision Monday, Aug.1, on which man she wants for a hopeful happily-ever-after (followed by the traditional “After the Final Rose” special), the host moves on to his next duty in ABC’s almost year-round franchise. “Bachelor in Paradise” begins its third season Tuesday, Aug. 2, but one of the most colorful parts of the latest “Bachelorette” will follow Harrison: The “Paradise” contestants getting another shot at love include Chad Johnson, made an enemy of virtually every other bachelor present while relentlessly aiming for Fletcher’s heart.

“I think we’ve topped ourselves, which is hard to believe,” says Harrison of the new “Paradise” iteration that unfolds in Mexico. “I think all these shows are such a great study in human behavior, you never know who’s going to catch on and spark an interest with the viewers. ‘The Chad,’ as we call him, is definitely that lightning rod for controversy now. The thing about the show, though, is that you have a Chad who’s fun and interesting – but at the end of the day, the viewers want and demand more.

“It can’t be that one-trick pony. Chad’s great, but if we don’t have a great love story to tell, who cares? That would leave everybody wanting a little bit ... but Chad’s going to be the gift that keeps on giving this summer, for sure. If you think you saw the end of him in ‘The Bachelorette,’ you ain’t seen nothin’ yet, as they say back home.”

There’s proven hope for those who undergo the “Bachelor” process again in “Paradise,” since last year’s round resulted in the engagement and wedding of Jade Roper and Tanner Tolbert. “The dangerous thing about this show, but also the great thing,” Harrison reasons, “is that if you have several good seasons (of ‘The Bachelor’ and ‘The Bachelorette’), you have a lot of stars, so to speak, to bring back. The twins (Emily and Haley Ferguson, from Ben Higgins’ recent ‘Bachelor’ season) will be coming back, plus Jubilee (Sharpe) and Amanda (Stanton) from Ben’s season. They’re people you want to keep up with.”

“Rideshare,” www. youtube.com/ playlist?listPLFJ_Rkwb9gnhk41IIFc7rgjMARKbP6mH_

Anyone who has ever taken an awkward ride with Uber or Lyft will appreciate this new series that follows the adventures of Jeff Irlbeck, series co-creator and a one-time rideshare driver, as he transports eccentric passengers (played by improv actors) across Chicago. The joke here is that Irlbeck isn’t warned in advance which roles the actors will play. Improv fun.

“At Bay,” www.youtube. com/channel/UCVH_hz2CWjPXmDKozXyx23w/ videos

Start-up culture is widely understood at Stanford University and it forms the plot for this new series from students Jay Moon and Katie Adams. Here, they play the creators of a fledgling tech company on the cusp of releasing a photo-sharing app. When sudden tragedy throws the firm into a tailspin, they suddenly find themselves caught between the university and Silicon Valley as they try to juggle problems while keeping up with their studies.

“New Deep South,” www.thefront.com/watch/ new-deep-south-seasontrailer/

In collaboration with The Front, Rosie Haber and Lauren Cioffi are the driving forces behind this new documentary series that explores the multifaceted and vibrant gay culture that is emerging in the American South. The opening episode stops in Jackson, Miss., to explore the lives of gay youth and examine the complex nature of sexual identity in the new Deep South.

SUNDAY

7 p.m. on KOKI Teen Choice 2016

As usual, the lucky will leave with a surfboard, since that’s the “trophy” in this annual ceremony that reveals young fans’ picks of favorites in movies, television, music, sports, fashion and social media.

Victoria Justice and WWE icon (and “American Grit” host) John Cena preside over the event at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., with Justin Timberlake slated to receive the Decade Award. Scheduled performers include Flo Rida, Charlie Puth and Serayah.

7 p.m. on SYFY Movie: Sharknado: The 4th Awakens

Chainsaw-wielding hero Fin Shepard (returning star Ian Ziering) and his family have enjoyed five years without shark-filled storms as the action picks up in this latest entry in the campy, deliberately cheesy horror comedy franchise, which finds Chicago and Las Vegas besieged before the terror spreads more widely. Tara Reid also returns, as do David Hasselhoff and Ryan Newman; franchise newbies include Hasselhoff’s former “Baywatch” colleagues Gena Lee Nolin and Alexandra Paul.

8 p.m. on AMC Preacher

Season 1 of this (mostly) acclaimed adaptation of writer Garth Ennis’ very dark comic book series draws to a close with “Call and Response,” in which the residents of tiny Annville, Texas, wait breathlessly to see whether Jesse (Dominic Cooper) will be able to deliver on his promise to get some important answers from Heaven. Joseph Gilgun, Ruth Negga, Lucy Griffiths and W. Earl Brown also star.

MONDAY

7 p.m. on KTUL

The Bachelorette

As it inevitably must, the moment of truth arrives for JoJo Fletcher in this season finale. Sure, it seemed like a lot of fun when the 26 fellows vying for her heart first stepped out of the limousines — but now, it’s down to the last two, and previews that have been running for weeks have promised tears aplenty when

she reveals her choice: “I just said goodbye to someone I love!” She’ll see him again, though, since the “After the Final Rose” special follows.

8 p.m. on TNT Rizzoli & Isles

On the morning that Jane (Angie Harmon) is supposed to testify in a major murder trial, she discovers that a key piece of evidence has been stolen. A judge gives the department three days to solve the case without relying on that evidence, or the accused party will be released in the new episode “65 Hours.” Elsewhere, Frankie (Jordan Bridges) decides to learn some magic tricks to impress Nina (Idara Victor) after discovering she is a fan of illusionists.

9 p.m. on KJRH Running Wild With Bear Grylls Don’t be “Jealous,” to coin the title of one of his biggest music hits: Nick Jonas tackles the Sierra Nevada Mountains with Grylls in this opener of the series’ third season, showing what he’s made of besides very good vocal cords. The trek allows for plenty of conversation, so Jonas talks about embarking on a solo career after finding initial fame in tandem with his brothers. He also reflects on fame itself, and how diabetes drove him to pursue it.

9 p.m. on LIFE UnREAL

As Coleman (Michael Rady) pressures her to help him destroy Quinn (Constance Zimmer) and the show, Rachel (Shiri Appleby) hatches a scheme of her own in the new episode “Espionage.” Darius and Jay (B.J. Britt, Jeffrey BowyerChapman) team up to ensure their two favorite candidates make it into the final two, but their alliance is quickly tested. Meanwhile, Quinn gets some information that changes her perspective on both “Everlasting” and her life as a whole.

TUESDAY

7 p.m. on KOKI

Coupled

The series has been all about what transpires in the two-hour season finale, “Coupled Up, Part1/Coupled Up, Part 2.” Those who have found romance on the island have to decide whether they’re going to leave as part of a pair or individually, and they get some help in reaching their conclusions: Relatives show up to advise them — and also to pose some very tough questions. Terrence “J” Jenkins is the host.

7 p.m. on KTUL Bachelor in Paradise

For only a brief time each year, television is “Bachelor”- and “Bachelorette”-free ... and this isn’t it, so here’s the third season of past contestants from those shows on another search for love. Host Chris Harrison is on hand, of course, as the would-be romantics share accommodations in Mexico. Among the returnees: enemy-to-all-other-

men (evidently) Chad from the justending “Bachelorette,” and twins Emily and Haley from the most recent “Bachelor.”

9 p.m. on KTUL Mistresses

Karen (Yunjin Kim) worries when Alec (guest star Ed Quinn) wants complete custody of Vivian in the new episode “Survival of the Fittest.” An item discovered in Lucy’s (guest star Corinne Massiah) jacket prompts April (Rochelle Aytes) to have a discussion virtually every mother has with a daughter. Kate (Tabrett Bethell) has reasons for keeping quiet about her new romance. An accident leads to problems between Joss and Harry (Jes Macallan, Brett Tucker).

WEDNESDAY

7 p.m. on KTUL CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock

The annual, Country Music Association-sponsored CMA Fest for stars to take the stage — and meet fans — took place in Nashville, Tenn., over four days in June, and many highlights are compiled in this annual three-hour special. Brett Eldredge and Thomas Rhett, who toured together last fall, are the show’s first-time hosts. They also perform, as do Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan, Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert and Rascal Flatts.

8 p.m. on KJRH

The Night Shift

In the new two-hour presentation “Between a Rock and a Hard Place/Trust Issues,” problems mount for TC and Paul (Eoin Macken, Robert Bailey Jr.). While trying to help save a worker trapped under a crane, someone watching the mission falls into a gravel pit. In the ER, Scott (Scott Wolf) has to treat an earlier patient anew. Then, Jordan’s (Jill Flint) date needs her professional help, while TC and Drew (Brendan Fehr) end up spending a night in jail.

8:30 p.m. on A&E Duck Dynasty

In the new episode “Children of the Cornbread,” a competitive cook-off ensues after the Robertson brothers can’t agree as to which of their wives makes the best cornbread. Elsewhere, Jep, Martin and Godwin’s practical joke on Uncle Si backfires, handing Si the precious last laugh.

9 p.m. on KOED Spillover — Zika, Ebola & Beyond

The current international concern about the Zika virus has given rise to renewed attention to viruses that “spill over” from humans to animals, the subject of this new documentary. Scientists from North America to Africa are seen working on anticipating and containing such outbreaks, a process that also factors in the Ebola and Nipah crises. The special also profiles a global organization called PREDICT, which encompasses related studies in 20 nations.

9 p.m. on FX Tyrant

An intense backlash ensues when Barry (Adam Rayner) bans open prayer at the university in the aftermath of some thwarted attacks by terrorists in the new episode “A Rock and a Hard Place.” Al-Qadi (Annet Mahendru) is among those speaking out against the restriction on religious freedom. As Leila’s (Moran Atias) campaign heats up, Barry turns to Daliyah (Melia Kreiling) for comfort.

THURSDAY

7 p.m. on KJRH Rio Olympics Preview Special

With just over two weeks of coverage about to begin, an overview of the athletes and events that will keep many eyes riveted on Rio de Janeiro is entirely appropriate — and this hour-long special provides it. There’s a lot to these Games, and not all of it on the field of competition, since concerns about preparedness and health safety have been voiced. While this report is likely to factor those in, it also will survey the range of included sports and nations.

7 p.m. on KOKI Home Free

It’s down to the last two contestants in the two-hour season finale, “Overnight Success/Dreams Come True,” as each has a big stake in providing a Dream Home for their personal hero. Only one will get to do so, however, and hosts Mike Holmes and Tim Tebow will be on hand for that person’s triumphant moment — which is only appropriate, since they’ve also been on site to witness all the hurdles along the way.

8 p.m. on KTUL Greatest Hits

Up to now, each episode of this summer series has dealt with fiveyear spans of popular songs — but the two-hour season finale breaks down those barriers and covers the entire range of tunes that the show has considered, from 1980 to 2005. Expect an all-star cast of artists to perform numbers they made famous, with other guests paying tribute to the music popularized by different acts. Arsenio Hall and Kelsea Ballerini are the hosts.

9:03 p.m. on HIST Ice Road Truckers

The fearless truckers have confronted frustrating and even occasionally terrifying challenges in their previous nine seasons, but as this hit unscripted series returns for its milestone Season 10, the drivers may finally have met their match: climate change. Global warming and the fickle El Nino deliver a winter unlike any that has gone before, and one that is likely to be very short. That lends a sense of urgency to every load they undertake and moves the drivers to set aside personal profit to help those most in need.

FRIDAY

6:30 p.m. on KJRH Rio Olympics

More than 10,500 athletes representing 206 nations in 306 events in 28 sports parade through Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium tonight as the Opening Ceremonies kick off the games of the 31st Summer Olympiad. NBC and its various cable, broadcast and online platforms will combine to provide more than 6,700 hours of coverage through the Closing Ceremonies on Aug. 21. Bob Costas is among those calling the action.

7 p.m. on HALL Kitten Summer Games

Kitten gymnastics, high jump, balance beam and de-CAT-hlon are just a few of the featured events on offer as adoptable little felines “compete” in this new special produced in association with North Shore Animal League America and Last Hope Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation. Beth Stern hosts, while Mary Carillo and David Frei cover the action in this spinoff from Hallmark’s successful annual “Kitten Bowl” franchise that airs every Super Bowl Sunday.

8 p.m. on KOTV Hawaii Five-0

If pirates and buried treasure seem like things of the past, they pose modern concerns for McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) and his team in “Mai ho’oni i ka wai lana malie” (Hawaiian for “Do Not Disturb the Water That Is Tranquil”). A killer’s efforts to find the riches leads the police detectives to an ancient palace in Oahu — but absent is Kono (Grace Park), who faces peril along with her new husband Adam (Ian Anthony Dale).

9 p.m. on KOTV Blue Bloods

Tom Selleck vs. Whoopi Goldberg: That’s guaranteed to be quite a showdown in “Help Me Help You,” as Goldberg guest stars as a city council member who takes a very public stand against a police policy. Danny and Baez (Donnie Wahlberg, Marisa Ramirez) try to help one of Linda’s (Amy Carlson) coworkers, who has an ex-husband with anger issues. Erin (Bridget Moynahan) has a problem with her mentor’s (guest star Dakin Matthews) current tactics.

SATURDAY

7 p.m. on KOKI Wayward Pines

In the two-hour presentation “Once Upon a Time in Wayward Pines/ Exit Strategy,” Terrence Howard (“Empire”) and Oscar winner Melissa Leo reprise their first-season roles, and the plot makes it logical why they would appear again. Flashback sequences explain how Jason Higgins (Tom Stevens) came to lead the First Generation. Then, Xander (Josh Helman) finds his way back to town, and someone potentially helpful comes along with him. Jason Patric also stars.

7 p.m. on KTUL Last Man Standing Mike (Tim Allen) decides to give Vanessa (Nancy Travis) her space — literally — by building her a freestanding structure where she can do her work in “He Shed, She Shed.” His plan to let her have her own environment may be just a little too effective. Kristin’s (Amanda Fuller) designation as employee of the month has a definite effect on Kyle (Christoph Sanders). Molly Ephraim, Kaitlyn Dever and Hector Elizondo also star.

8 p.m. on SYFY Movie: 2 Lava 2 Lantula

The tongue-in-cheek title — an obvious homage to “2 Fast 2 Furious,” a well-known action movie sequel — should tell you everything you need to know about the campy tone of this new sequel to the 2015 TV movie hit “Lavantula.” That movie’s lead, Steve Guttenberg, returns in his role of washed-up action movie star Colton West, who tries to save Florida when a new nest of fire-breathing, lava-spewing arachnids awakens in the Sunshine State. Joining him is his BFF, Marty (fellow returnee Michael Winslow).
