Whole Hawg Days celebrate pork

Eufaula event features rides, car shows and more all centered around swine

Eufaula brims with carnival rides, crafts, car shows, horseshoe pitching and poker runs this weekend.

But make no mistake — it’s all about the pork.

Smoke from slow-cooking pork will fill downtown Eufaula from Friday night through Saturday during Whole Hawg Days. That’s when contestants are smoking for the best pulled pork in town.

Pork judging begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with free hawg sandwiches given out at 5 p.m. at various spots across town.

Charlie Urquhart cooked one of the 2016 winning entries. He said he cooks his meat “low and slow” with oak and pecan wood.

“The wood creates a light smoke with a little bit of fruity flavor,” Urquhart said. “I cook it at 225 degrees.”

Eufaula Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Pam Rossi said last year’s Whole Hawg Days drew 21 contestants. She said she expects nearly as many this year.

Gamblers, lovers, a disco diva and singing nun set out on a glamorous voyage.

What could possibly go wrong?

“Disaster,” explores such possibilities this weekend and next weekend at Muskogee Little Theatre. Performances of the flashy musical are 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Aug. 4 and 5; 2 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 p.m. Aug. 3.

Director Doobie Potter says “Disaster” spoofs disaster movies that shook audiences back in the 1970s.

“‘Poseidon Adventure,’ ‘Towering Inferno,’ ‘Airport,’” Potter said. “And it’s all 1970s music.”

Potter said the show is set on a gambling cruise ship, docked in a harbor to avoid local laws.

“The cruise owner is kind of sleazy about doing things up to code,” Potter said.

That’s not all the harbor is harboring.

A professor boards the vessel and says there are toxins down below.

“He tells everyone there’s going to be an earthquake and tidal wave,” Potter said.

Then the ship flips over in a sea swarming with sharks and piranhas.

Set designer Sterling Spinks and the stage crew must make such calamities real, Potter said.

“It’s been a challenge for Sterling to do a shipwrecked ship, to do sharks,” Potter said. “People get eaten by piranhas. You have one woman who gets hit on the head with a chandelier. There is a burial at sea.”

Performers face challenges, as

well.

O’Shea Stevenson, 10, must play a brother and twin sister.

“It’s been very fun. It’s good to get an experience like this,” O’Shea said. “I want to set an example for young people. Don’t be afraid and just go for it.”

O’Shea said he used posture and voice to change character.

“For the boy, you stand up straighter and deepen your voice,” he said. “For the girl, you lighten your voice.”

Potter said there is one scene in which the girl must carry her twin brother, who is in a diabetic coma.

The cast features more cliche characters, including a singing nun with a gambling problem.

Kristen Simpson, who plays Sister Mary Downey, said she found the nun part challenging.

“She’s very repressed. It’s a different role for me,” Simpson said, adding that her past MLT performances were “Chicago,” “Cabaret” and

“Little Shop of Horrors.”

Fortunately, Sister Mary finds an outlet in her music. Simpson said she sings the 1976 hit “Torn Between Two Lovers.”

“Jesus and the slot machine,” Simpson explained.

Prepare for ear worms.

“Disaster” brims with 34 hits from the 1970s.

There’s Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff,” Helen Reddy’s “I am Woman,” Eddie Money’s “Baby Hold on to Me” and Morris Albert’s “Feelings.”

that the song that got stuck in their heads was “Saturday Night” by the Bay City Rollers.

Cast member Braden Thomson was not alive when these songs were hits. Yet, he said he is familiar with the songs.

He said the biggest challenge has been hitting higher notes in many of the songs.

the entries, Rossi said.

Urquhart said he’ll start smoking the pork around 10 p.m. Friday to get it ready for judging, around 1 p.m. Saturday at the Eufaula Community Center.

Urquhart said he’s known how to smoke pork for about 16 years. He said he’s cooked for various Whole Hawg Days pork contestants over the past four years. He recalls placing each year he’s entered.

His secret to winning?

“Just a lot of love,” Urquhart said. “It’s just a love for the town and community service.”

with the 17th annual Poker Run. Registration begins at 7 a.m. Saturday at Eufaula Cove Marina and Captain John’s Restaurant. Boaters, bikers and motorists take off from the marina at 9 a.m. then visit marinas on Lake Eufaula to get the best poker hand. Prizes will be awarded according to the rules of five card stud. First place winner could get $20,000.

Rossi said about 400 people enter the poker run. Fees this year are $225 for five cards and $250 for six cards.

Youngsters enjoy carnival rides during Eufaula’s Whole Hawg Days. Rides will be at Posey Park Thursday night through Saturday.

People can sample the contestants’ cuts during the sandwich giveaway 5 p.m. Saturday.

Rossi said about Whole Hawg Days draws 10,000 people.

“Most come Saturday for the sandwiches,” Rossi said. However, people don’t have to get their pork bellies full to have fun during the festival.

Summertime Amusement carnival rides will run Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Posey Park. Arts and crafts booths will fill the park Friday and Saturday.

The Whole Hawg Parade starts marching at 7 p.m. Friday from Eufaula High School, then north on Main Street.

Saturday festivities get wet

People also can check out hot rods, rat rods, cycles and classic cars 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Kiwanis Park.  Registration begins at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $20 with proceeds benefiting the 4-H Club of McIntosh County.

Eufaula Smoke Shop will sponsor a horseshoe pitching tournament 9 a.m. Saturday near Kiwanis Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Entry is $10 for singles and $20 for doubles.

Eufaula Indian Community Smoke Shop manager Benita Tiger said the shop had hosted horseshoe tournaments during Eufaula Heritage Days in April.

“It was cold and raining, and we still had 12 show up,” Tiger said. “This time we expect quite a few more.”

Prizes are $500 for first place and $250 for second place.

Big Jim’s Rally brings motorcycle enthusiasts to Tahlequah

Activities, vendors and concert series to take place across town

The Ozark foothills and Big Jim’s Rally will bring a bevy of visitors to Tahlequah to join local bikers for motorcycle rides, Aug. 11-12.

This year, the bikes will be moved to Morgan Street between Musk-

ogee Avenue and Water Avenue. Activities and vendors will be set up in Norris Park, while the Big Jim’s Concert Series will take place under the Morgan Street Pavilion.

Big Jim’s will start at noon Friday, with music lasting until around midnight, and starting up again about 8 a.m. Saturday, according to Drew

Haley, director of Tahlequah Main Street Association.

“Muskogee Avenue will not be closed this year to allow for people to cruise,” said Haley. “Parking spaces for motorcycles only will be reserved on Muskogee Avenue.”

It has rained the past few years for the rally, but visitors still rode in

from Tulsa, Fort Smith and Fayetteville, some 50 or 60 miles out.

“If it’s good weather, we’ll see more motorcycles,” said Haley, who anticipates about 1,000 bikes will show up.

is supportive of the event, and members often volunteer.

There’s fun for one and all, said bike enthusiast Cliff Dodge, member of the Priesthood Motorcycle Ministry of Tahlequah and contact for the organization. The group plans to coordinate and judge a bike competition this year.

“I enjoy seeing the community come together and have a good time, and enjoy an afternoon with people of like mindset, along with enthusiasts who enjoy the lifestyle, as well,” Dodge said. “It’s real good for local business.”

People who ride motorcycles don’t mind spending money on hotels and food, according to Dodge.

“It brings the community out and people from [the rural areas] to town. Restaurants are busy. Businesses downtown are busy, and hotels get booked,” Dodge said.

“It’s $10 cover for music under the Pavilion Friday and Saturday. VIP packages will be available on our website soon,” said Haley.

Scheduled to perform are: Blue Fish, Micheal Rappe Quartet, RocKFisch, White Trash Banditos, The Vox Squadron, and Taddy Porter.

“Taddy Porter as headliner is worth coming to hear,” Haley said.

The Tahlequah Fire Department is sponsoring the Big Jim’s Poker Run on Saturday morning, with bikes heading out 8:30-11 a.m. All proceeds will go to the TFD Tragedy Fund to assist firefighters and their families, especially those impacted by recent cancer diagnoses.

Food and other vendor applications are on the website, and those that set up will offer standard fare, as well as specialty items.

And the bikes themselves are a sight to see.

“We enjoy seeing what other people have done to their motorcycles to make them more interesting, faster and shinier,” said Dodge.

Five ride routes are mapped out on the event website. Tickets for the music shows are available now at www.bigjimsrally.com.

A s a minister’s daughter in “7th Heaven,” she was something of a saint, but Jessica Biel definitely is “The Sinner” in her return to series television.

The actress also is an executive producer of USA Network’s version of the Petra Hammesfahr best-seller, premiering Wednesday, Aug. 2. Biel plays seemingly content wife and mother Cora Tannetti, who suddenly erupts in murderous violence in public view on a beach, an event that puzzles an investigator (Bill Pullman) determined to find out why she suddenly turned homicidal, as she doubts her own sanity.

Christopher Abbott (“A Most Violent Year”) also stars as her equally baffled husband.

Jessica Biel is no saint in ‘The Sinner’

“I just loved the book (adapted by fellow executive producer Derek Simonds), and that’s really how it really began,” Biel says. “I was just constantly surprised every step of the way. ‘We’ve all seen everything, and nothing can surprise anybody anymore’ is the way it feels to me sometimes, and yet, I was surprised and just fascinated by this woman who is kind of an unreliable narrator. And I just had to do it.

“I hadn’t worked in a while,” notes Biel. “I had my son (with husband Justin Timberlake) and had kind of dabbled in a few things here and there, more on the development side, and I was ready to dive into something very complicated and emotionally challenging.

This was just the perfect thing that fell onto my lap.”

That challenge for Biel is consistent throughout “The Sinner” since she explains that her new alter ego “sometimes lies to save and protect herself and her past and her family. It’s very much like ‘The Girl on the Train,’ because you’re not totally sure when to trust her ... which I find very compelling from an artistic standpoint and an audience standpoint. I like to go, ‘Oh, I hate that character now. But, wait a minute. I kind of like that character.’ I enjoy that kind of up-and-down experience.”

The same might apply to the balance Biel admits she’s still trying to master as a working parent of a two-year-old. “It’s hard to work full-time and then,

Jessica Biel and Christopher Abbott star in “The Sinner,” premiering Wednesday on USA Network.

when you’re home, be Mom full-time,” she reflects. “It’s tiring, as any parent with any experience with that knows. I think you hit the balance every now and again, but the best advice one of my friends gave me was, ‘When you’re at work, be at work, and when you’re home, be home. Do not try to do both at the same time.’ ”

Biel appreciates that cable networks have helped to open more and varied opportunities in TV since her “7th Heaven” days, “especially for women. We can tell these stories that maybe you couldn’t find the money or support for in a feature-film version, and it’s sort of this Wild West, in a great way. If you have an idea, put it out there, and someone probably will be interested in making it.”

Fitness has always been important to Jennifer Beals, so much so that there was a time not long ago when you would see the 53-year-old former “Flashdance” star competing in triathlons.

Running, biking and swimming – there were races in all three, and while Beals admits she was always too slow to win, just getting through one of these grueling events was a victory in itself.

“It’s such a feeling of accomplishment,” says Beals, who stars in the new Amazon series “The Last Tycoon,” “and there’s a camaraderie in the race and training for a race and there’s a sense of expansion. Once you challenge yourself with something you’ve never done before, there’s a sense of expansion that’s incredibly gratifying.”

“The Last Tycoon,” which is based on the final novel of F. Scott Fitzgerald, follows the power struggle between a 1930s Hollywood studio boss (Kelsey Grammer, “Boss,” “Frasier”) and an up-and-coming executive (Matt Bomer, “American Horror Story,” “White Collar”), set against the backdrop of the Great Depression and the growing influence of Hitler’s Germany.

Beals plays Margo Taft, a movie star and Hollywood royalty with a knack for getting what she wants, a role she says gave her the same sense of exhilaration as running a triathlon.

“When (‘Tycoon’ showrunner) Billy Ray called me and told me about the part and offered me the part, I hung up the phone and immediately started shaking,” Beals recalls. “I was so afraid, and I knew that I was afraid because it was something that meant something to me and that I was excited by and that would ask a lot of me.

“And I knew I had to do it,” she says with a laugh. “Fear is a really good indicator for me that it’s something that I need to do – at least with work.”

People who own and operate restaurants aren’t doing it for the money.

The work is hard, the hours are long and the compensation is modest at best – assuming the business survives. And then, of course, there are the health inspectors, the slacker employees, the broken equipment and the ever-rising cost of food – all issues with which the restaurateur must grapple. Those who enter this game do it because they love feeding people and making them happy. It’s as simple as that.

Among them are celebrities, who start or put their names on individual eateries, franchises and chains in the hopes of parlaying it into a successful business, while providing employment and putting smiles on faces along the way. Some are more involved with their concerns than others. A few you might even find on site.

Gordon Ramsay: The prolific Michelin-starred chef and host of Fox’s “The F Word” has restaurants around the world in locations such as Las Vegas, New York, Singapore, Hong Kong, France and Qatar. His Restaurant Gordon Ramsay chain has 14 eateries in London alone.

The Wahlberg brothers: Backed by his more famous brothers Mark and Donnie, chef Paul Wahlberg is the creative force behind Wahlburgers, a hamburger chain with locations in nine states (including their native Boston) and inspiration for the A&E Network reality series of the same name. Its motto, “making you happy makes us happy,” says it all.

Robert De Niro: The Oscar-winning actor’s Nobu, a chain of Japanese restaurants, has 37 locations on four continents. He’s also partners with Ridley Scott and Harvey Weinstein in the West Hollywood eatery Ago.

Justin Timberlake: Ribs and fried chicken are what’s on the menu at the “Rock Your Body” singer’s Southern Hospitality, which has two restaurants in Colorado and one in New York City.

Michael Jordan: His Air-ness has a mini-chain of three restaurants, all named Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse, with locations in New York, Chicago and Uncasville, Conn.

Toby Keith: In 2005, the country music star opened his I Love This Bar & Grill in Oklahoma City, and since then franchises have opened and closed, with three remaining in Oklahoma. Steaks, ribs and chops are the bread and butter of this concern, along with daily beer and drink specials.

Jon Bon Jovi: The rocker’s JBJ Soul Kitchen takes an unconventional approach to feeding hungry patrons at its two New Jersey locations. You could be sitting with a stranger, the menu doesn’t have prices and all items are “pay what you like,” though a minimum $10 donation is suggested. If you can’t pay that, you can exchange an hour of volunteer time for a healthful, organic meal. And guest chefs such as Mario Batali or Tom Colicchio could be preparing your meal, so maybe you’d want to pony up.

“Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later,” www.netflix.com/title/80117800

An all-star cast including David Hyde Pierce, Amy Poehler, Chris Meloni, Janeane Garofalo and Kristen Wiig return for this eight-episode limited series dropping Friday, that transports viewers to the 10-year reunion of Camp Firewood. New players including Mark Feuerstein, Marlo Thomas, Dax Shepard, Alyssa Milano and Adam Scott join in on the fun.

For NBC sideline reporter Michele Tafoya, covering the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game is the most active telecast of her year and arguably the most fun.

After all, she gets to interview the new inductees as they stand on the sidelines watching the game, immersed in what for many of them is the high point of their careers and maybe even their lives. And she gets to share in the exhilaration and see a side of these athletes that is rarely seen.

“They’re humbled. They’re really taking in this moment that is the stuff of dreams,” she explains. “It’s the kind of thing that you don’t really know is ever going to happen to you, and then it happens, and they’re there and they’re taking it all in. Now they’re part of this group, they’re part of this brotherhood, for lack of a better term, of guys that wear the gold jacket – it’s such a spectacular group of people.

“And I think that part of it, too, when they start to see all the other guys who show up to be at the ceremonies and at the game and they’re realizing again and again through these various moments, seeing their bust for the first time, going through the night of getting the gold jacket – all these things that cover the course of several days that is just almost overwhelming for them.”

The Peacock Network once again has the telecast, as the Arizona Cardinals and the Dallas Cowboys open the 2017 preseason on Thursday, Aug. 3, from the new Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium on the grounds of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

“Comrade Detective,” www. amazon.com

This nostalgic live-action comedy series takes on the look of a Romanian cop series of the 1980s — complete with Communist propaganda and Romanian dialogue — as two detectives investigate the murder of a cohort and discover a conspiracy to destroy their country that’s fueled by none other than capitalism. Romanian actors Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici play the cops in question, with English dialogue voiced by Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Other voice talents include Fred Armisen, Chloe Sevigny, Mark Duplass and Debra Winger.

The game is, of course, prelude to the induction ceremony that happens two days later (and airs live in prime time on ESPN and NFL Network), in which Cowboys owner/president/general manager Jerry Jones, quarterback Kurt Warner, running backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Terrell Davis, linebacker/defensive end Jason Taylor, placekicker Morten Andersen and safety Kenny Easley become the newest members of the hallowed halls.

One of the most interesting cases is that of Andersen, who becomes only the second pure placekicker (after Jan Stenerud) to be enshrined. The native of Copenhagen, Denmark, played for six teams over 26 seasons and established league records for most points (2,544), field goals (565) and attempts (709) and games played (382). That’s in addition to seven Pro Bowl appearances, six All-Pro designations, two Golden Toe awards and being named to All-Decade teams in the 1980s and ‘90s. It took him five years of being passed over (he retired in 2008) but his inclusion is a no-brainer.

“That’s the reason ... this is fun,” Tafoya says, “because sometimes you have these guys who aren’t super recent players and you get to revisit these great old memories that we haven’t talked about for a while, or these amazing accomplishments that we haven’t talked about for a while.

“So you get a little of the recent stuff and you get some of the past stuff and it’s just a great stage for the National Football League to present the shining moments and the legacies that some of these guys have left behind, and it’s an awful lot of fun to be a part of that.”

“Star Wars: Forces of Destiny,” www.youtube.com/pla ylist?listPLpSnlSGciSWNBXSxZZrsvWdnoGsLCr6WL

Disney and Lucasfilm Animation team up for this series of animated shorts that take an entertaining look at the adventures of Princess Leia, Rey and the leading women of “Star Wars.” The first two episodes follow Rey and BB-8 as they escape from a Nightwatcher Worm and a group of scavengers to protect BB-8’s valuable information. All characters in the first eight episodes are voiced by the actresses who played them in the live-action productions, with the exception of the late Carrie Fisher.

Kurt Warner heads 2017 Hall of Fame class

Quarterback Kurt Warner is among those to be inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame when the enshrinement ceremony airs Saturday, Aug. 5 on ESPN. The Hall of Fame has mixed things up a bit this year, having the annual Hall of Fame Game played prior to the ceremony rather than after. One of Warner’s former teams, the Arizona Cardinals, face the Dallas Cowboys in that exhibition game that airs Thursday, Aug. 3, which will air on NBC.

Warner burst on the scene in 1999 as a back-up quarterback with the then St. Louis Rams, playing behind starter Trent Green. Green went down with an injury during the pre-season, and Warner took over and led what became one of most productive offenses in NFL history. The Rams won the Super Bowl that year and nearly won another following the 2001 season. Warner spent a year with the New York Giants before moving on to the Cardinals, where he played in another Super Bowl after the 2008 season.

Joining Warner in the Hall of Fame will be running back Terrell Davis, who won two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos. Also being inducted are the following: kicker Morten Anderson; safety Kenny Easley; defensive end Jason Taylor; running back LaDainian Tomlinson; and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who has three Super Bowl rings as an owner with the Cowboys.

Overall, this is a solid class of inductees who deserve to have their legacies cemented in sports history.

It runs two hours, so the men clearly have a lot to tell, not only about her but about each other in certain cases. Since it’s already known that Lindsay gets engaged in the finale, that could prove to be an interesting factor

here. As usual, Chris Harrison is the host.

Face Off

Goodness, these challenges seem to be getting weirdly specific: In a new episode called “Feral Fungi,” the six remaining special effects makeup artists are tasked with creating makeup for zombies. Not just any zombies, though — these particular walking dead were turned via contact with a fungal virus. McKenzie Westmore is the host.

COMEDY LEGENDS BRING HUMOR TO A SERIOUS TOPIC IN FUNNY OR DIE’S ‘BOILING THE FROG’

If, as Mary Poppins once posited, a spoonful of sugar could help the medicine go down, then comedy might help make climate change information more palatable, as the makers of a new web series hope.

In “Boiling the Frog,” a six-episode digital series on the Funny or Die website, two comedy legends – Al Franken, former “Saturday Night Live” player and current Democratic senator from Minnesota, and ex-“Late Show” host David Letterman – engage each other on a topic close to their hearts: climate change.

The chemistry of these longtime friends is evident in each of the five-minute shorts as Letterman, who admits he’s far from an expert on the topic, plays the role of the everyman as he questions Franken on the various scientific and political aspects of the subject. The answers are enlightening without beating one over the head, and also quite funny.

And it turns out, it wasn’t difficult to get either man on board.

“Al Franken struck us as somebody who might be really great,” series co-creator and co-executive producer David Gelber explains. “We knew that he cared a lot about the issue. And then we knew that he and Dave were old friends and so it just sort of happened.”

“Al Franken is really in this kind of amazing moment where he’s just kind of everywhere and saying all the right things,” co-creator and co-executive producer Joel Bach adds, “and we thought, ‘What if this guy is willing to work with us?’ ... He is now saying out loud he’s ready to be funny again after 10 years of not being funny or trying to pull back his humor. He’s now ready to be funny again. So putting him and Letterman together again was just kind of really lucky timing and we’re happy it worked out.”

Along the way, the two men talk about everything from why U.S. lawmakers aren’t doing more to combat climate change and the real reason coal jobs are disappearing to how Letterman’s impressive beard can be a powerful weapon to control carbon emissions. Franken even touches on Letterman’s trip to India last year to see what Indians are doing about it, asking Letterman why he seemed so stupid.

“What we hope people come away with,” Gelber says, “is that in each video, they’re going to hopefully – and we think they will – learn something new. Learn something new about the way politics works and how lawmakers are dealing and not dealing with climate change in Washington. And they’ll have some laughs along the way. So it’s meant to entertain people but mainly teach them something hopefully they didn’t know.”
