Kristin Chenoweth is a case of ‘Trial & Error ’ in NBC comedy’s second season
W here John Lithgow left off, Kristin Chenoweth is picking up. NBC’s “Trial & Error” is made for distinctive comedic performers playing a Southern town’s offbeat crime suspects, and Emmy- and Tony-winning dynamo Chenoweth carries the baton as the satire’s second season begins Thursday, July 19. She plays the fictional East Peck’s society matron, flashy heiress Lavinia Peck-Foster, whose colorful nature doesn’t necessarily help when she’s accused of killing her husband – whose remains are in a suitcase in her car Relocated New York attorney Josh Segal (cast returnee Nicholas D’Agosto) defends her
Maintaining “Trial & Error” is “the best job ever” for her, the ever-lively Chenoweth says she empathizes with Lavinia beyond the character’s humorous aspects. “In comedy, you’re supposed to be funny all the time but in delving into what makes someone funny, you
also have to look at what makes them sad, especially when you have a character who seems unsympathetic. I’ve been in the position before where I’ve had to make an unlikable character likable, but I wanted to make this person lovable.
“ What I discovered,” the singer-actress notes, “ was that she saw her dad die when she was a little girl, she had a crazy mother, and she was locked inside her huge mansion her whole life. Once a year, she came out for a gala, and it was at her house. That’s some deep stuff, and as an actress being given all these different levels to play, it’s a gift.”
Chenoweth believes she, “Trial & Error” writer and executive producer Jeff Astrof and director Jeffrey Blitz make “a really good team, in that we challenge each other We got several runs at big, long scenes, with cameras ever ywhere. We’d just shoot and shoot and by the time they edited it together, they already knew what they were going to do.”
Following her fourth annual Broadway Bootcamp for aspiring young talents in her native Broken Arrow, Okla., Chenoweth is making ‘Trial & Error“ her major summer venture. She’s taking time off to treat a neck ailment from a 2012 accident on the set of ‘ The Good Wife,” causing her to bow out of a number of concert dates including a centennial tribute to composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein at the Hollywood Bowl.
“I was supposed to go right into recording my next album,” Chenoweth says, “but I just finally decided to have some time for selfcare, which I’ve never done. ( The injur y) has been a thorn in my side, so I’m just going to take six weeks and do it. I would like to have a long career, and to do that, I need to give it a break for a minute. But just for a minute!”

Though you’ve done series work in your native Australia, would you say “The Outpost” is the biggest project in your career to date?
Yeah, this is the big break! I’ve been coming over to America for the last five years, auditioning and just fighting for roles. It’s really nice to finally get the break, and it all star ts to snowball from here, I guess. Doors are opening for me that never used to, and I’m getting a

lot more oppor tunities that I didn’t before. It’s thrilling.
Since “The Outpost” is airing in Australia at the same time it rolls out in many other countries, is that special for you?
All of my friends and family are excited to watch it, so it’s nice. It’s a good feeling to finally be able to show them your hard work.
Speaking of “hard work,” since “The Outpost” is a very physical show, have you accumulated many bruises from it?
After the first week of filming, I was blue. Oh, my gosh, I had so many bruises my legs and across my knuckles! When filming, you aren’t actually hitting anyone, a lot of the guys I was “hitting” had on – so I would cut my knuckles open I came out of the first few weeks quite and bruised, but I loved it.
How would you describe your accent the series?
I’m actually British in it, but they wanted to sound dif ferent than anyone else many of the other actors in the show English – so I put a little bit of an Australian twist on it. I feel as though Talon (Green’ character) wouldn’t be someone who from Down Under to find the outpost.

A: As a weekly series, it’s over, having been canceled by NBC a second time after its surprising second-season reprieve – and it took some time for the second pinkslipping to come, since both the network and Sony Pictures Television were tr ying to figure out a way to make a Season 3 financially viable. Though shopping the series elsewhere is possible, those behind it have turned their main attention toward tr ying to develop a TV-movie that would wrap up the loose ends left by 2 clif fhanger, They have been encouraging fans – whose suppor t did much to save the show last year – to demonstrate their interest in the proposed movie via messages on social media.

Lipinski brings viewers along for the ride on ‘Wedding Cake Championship’
Tara Lipinski admits there was somewhat of a learning curve for her in hosting “Wedding Cake Championship” with figure skating compadre Johnny Weir, but the 1998 Olympic gold medalist adds that that actually made for better television as they took the ride along with the viewers.
“Johnny and I don’t know that much about baking,” she says, “and as we got to know these bakers, for them to teach us and help us learn in a way that maybe some viewers that are watching who are like Johnny and I and love cakes, love watching competition shows but don’t know all the ins and outs and terminology, it was really fun along the way to be able to portray that to whoever’s watching.”
In the four-episode series, which has its finale Monday, July 16, on Food Network, six teams of elite wedding cake makers squared off to be one of the three to make it to the final round, in which they are tasked with making the most over-the-top cake for Lipinski and husband Todd Kapostasy for their first anniversary. The winning team bags a $25,000 grand prize and the title “Wedding Cake Champion.”
Lipinski says she was happy with her own wedding cake a year ago but adds she couldn’t help but come away from the competition with a few ideas for future occasions.

“What was interesting,” she says, “is I kind of feel like I know what was happening behind the scenes of making it now, which I almost wish I could have like stopped in and watched them do it. Because how they build these incredible cakes is really fun. But yeah, I think there’s definitely things I thought of, like, ‘Oh, if I’m every doing a cake again, I’m definitely going to add that or want to do it like this.’ ”

“I started it last night, ”The Pursuit of Happiness“ by Douglas Kennedy.”
What did you have for dinner last night?
“Last night I had Shake Shack (laughs), which is a guilty pleasure of mine. A chicken sandwich and a chocolate milkshake. I know, not the healthiest.”
What is your next project?
“My next project is I’m working on – it just got announced yesterday – Jim Carrey has a new show coming on Showtime called ‘Kidding’ and I have an arc on the first season. So I’ve already been in. It’s been an incredible experience. It’s been really fun and so that’s sort of the next project.”

This engaging new — and extremely family-friendly — documentary series is filmed at England’s popular Chester Zoo and highlights the unusually close relationship between the facility’s animals and their human keepers. The first episode, “New Arrival,” spotlights the zoo’s Asian elephant family, particularly its grumpy matriarch, Thi. Her out-of-sorts mood is understandable, since she’s been pregnant for nearly two years. As she reaches her due date, her humans keep a close watch on her, since she previously delivered a stillborn baby.
