Guns will blaze, tractors will pull and the hungry will eat at Saturday’s Webbers Falls Day Festival.
The festival begins at 7 a.m. Saturday with a pancake breakfast at the community center and ends with music in the park. Cost is $5 a plate.
Danny Haley, a festival coordinator, said most festivities will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Webbers Falls City Park.
That is, if the Arkansas River doesn’t rise.
“Mother Nature has to decide if it’s downtown or in the park,” Haley said. “Last year, we had over 500 people.”

Lawbreakers and Peacemakers will stage gunfights and other events hourly through the day.
However, group spokesman Joe Miller said visitors won’t see the same fight each hour.
“There will be something different each time,” Miller said. “We do not do the same gunfight twice,

unless someone wants to see it again.”
Lawbreakers and Peacemakers also do historic re-enactments, medicine shows and other types of old-style entertainment.
“You gotta do funny stuff or you lose the kids,” Miller said. “And the gunfighters are working closely with the bands. We shoot band members, too. We’re not picky.”
He said the group performs in an 80-mile radius to raise awareness and money for Van Buren-area charities.
Meanwhile, back on the north end of the park, tractor drivers will see how far they can pull heavy weights. The tractor pull begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Daley said youngsters can compete in a mini-tractor pull, as well as participate in other activities.
Festival-goers also can listen to Red Dirt and country music throughout the day.
A featured band is Riders Ford, known for such hits as “This Ain’t a Song” and “Home to Oklahoma.”
“We do not do the same gunfight twice, unless someone wants to see it again.”
Other bands include the all-female band Shoulda Been Blonde, the Time Killer Band of Webbers Falls, Serious Haddy and 3 Miles South.

Shamblin said contestants pull weighted “hooks” behind their tractors and are mostly judged by the dis-
Haley said he expects 20 to 25 vendors selling arts and crafts, plus food. Craft vendors include chainsaw sculptors.
“And there will be lots of good food,” Haley said, listing Indian tacos and fish among the dishes.

Oklahoma and a shade garden under a weeping willow tree.
Micki Shelton’s backyard features an orchard, shady patios, a row of hydrangeas — and Christmas ornaments. The ornaments and lights hang on a bush.
“I love Christmas,” Shelton said. “I call it my year-round Christmas tree.”
The garden has bloomed in many ways since Micki and Tom Shelton moved into their home in 2012.
Micki Shelton said there was only one cherry laurel tree when they moved in. With help from Oklahoma City landscape designer
John Fluitt, the Sheltons built their gardens.
Shelton said her husband particularly loved hydrangeas. She said her favorite is a lacy Chinese pistache tree. Ripe plums hang from a side tree.
“I’ve never eaten one of those,” Shelton said. “But the birds love it.”
Ken Laubenstein’s property features a lake and trails, as well as a garden. It has been a 30-year labor of love in which Laubenstein planted more than 700 trees. He put his land into a preservation area managed by the Land Legacy, a nonprofit conservation organization.
The Gooseneck Bend property attracts bald eagles, owls, pelicans and herons.
The Honor Heights Park Papilion features a butterfly house and an array of raised garden beds. Each

year, Muskogee Master Gardeners plant themed gardens in the beds. This year’s theme is literature, and each bed is designed around a different book.
Pecan Creek Winery west of Muskogee features acres of French-American hybrid grape vines. The vineyard features views of Arkansas River farmland and rolling hills.
Tour coordinator Sheryl Thygesen said the tour helps the Muskogee Garden Club raise money for its civic and horticultural projects. Recent projects included funding flower beds at Ben Franklin STEM Academy. STEM is short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Muskogee has its azaleas, Stilwell its strawberries, and Tahlequah has the Red Fern Festival.
The 1961 children’s novel, “Where the Red Fern Grows,” written by Wilson Rawls, was turned into a movie in 1974 and filmed in the Tahlequah area. The story about a boy and how he comes to own two hound dogs, and the bond they form, is the inspiration for the annual downtown Tahlequah event.

largest event, attracting visitors from surrounding states.
“We’re hoping for no rain and no cold weather this time,” Haley said.
The Red Fern Festival offers a variety of activities and events for families and visitors, including inflatables for kids, a cake walk, live music and a viewing of the classic movie, “Where the Red Fern Grows,” at Norris Park on Friday evening, and on Saturday, rubber ducky race, car show and the Kiwan-
is Club Barbecue and Chili CookOff with tasting kits.
Children’s games begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in Norris Park and introduce another generation of children to old-fashioned games such as sack races, tug-of-war, jump rope, ball tossing, rock painting, and the popular Crawdad Hole.
Each year, the festival grows. New this year is an outdoor painting competition, Plein Air Red Fern, which invites artists from the region to paint outdoors the landscapes and architecture of the county. Arts Council of Tahlequah sponsors the event, which offers $2,500 in prize money and runs June 15-17.
To make shopping more enjoy-
able and to allow the vendors to better coordinate, the festival staff has made some changes.
“The layout is a little different this year with vendors in categories: vintage together, arts in front of Cort Mall, merchandise has its own section, and gadgets and gizmos, and the home and garden show have their own sections,” Haley said.
A vintage car show will line up along Water Avenue from the Cherokee Square to Norris Park, Haley said.
“One of the popular aspects of the event is the car show. It brings a lot of people to see the vintage vehicles,” he said. Merchants are getting into the
fun, with sales and specials.
“The downtown stores will be putting booths out in the street and offering deals from manufacturers,” Haley said.
Hound dog field trials Saturday morning are popular, said Haley, because the dog owners get to compete.
“Dogs tree, scent a trail, and there are several different tests,” he said.
Haley’s favorite part of any event is the music – and it proves popular with the community and visitors alike during Red Fern Festival.
“This is the second time to use the new pavilion for music. It went really well with Turnpike Troubadours,” he said.

BY JOHN CROOK
A beloved – some might even say “divine” – entertainment veteran is the heavy favorite to win best leading actress in a musical during the “71st Annual Tony Awards” telecast Sunday, June 11, on CBS. Kevin Spacey hosts the ceremonies, broadcast live from New York’s Radio City Music Hall.
Last year’s Tony Awards were less a celebration of Broadway than of “Hamilton,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical phenomenon that won 11 Tonys out of 16 nominations. This year promises to be much more of a horse race among nominees, although Bette Midler is a strong frontrunner to win for her star turn in the current revival of “Hello, Dolly!,” which has received mostly rave reviews. At 71, Midler has audiences leaping to their feet nightly in a jubilant, sold-out production that is perfect for theatergoers
exhausted by stressful current events. The actress and singer received a special Tony back in 1974 for “adding luster to the Broadway season” with her fabled “Clams on the Half Shell Revue,” but a win for “Dolly” would be her first in competition.
Her main rivals in the category are a pair of two-time Tony-winning Broadway divas, Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole, who star together in the new musical “War Paint” as cosmetics mavens Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden.
If Midler and “Dolly” just seek to amuse and entertain, the new musical “Dear Evan Hansen” and its 23-year-old title star, Ben Platt, want to rip your heart out with a poignant story of a socially awkward and lovesick teenager who gets trapped in a terrible lie. Platt, whom Tony viewers may recognize from the two “Pitch Perfect” movies, already has won three
other awards for his intense performance in this new show, and he appears to be the one to beat in the category of best leading actor in a musical.
“Evan Hansen” itself has a good chance of taking the Tony as best musical, but two other shows – “Come From Away,” an upbeat folk musical about a tiny Newfoundland town that took in airline passengers stranded after the 9/11 terror attacks, and “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812,” adapted from part of “War and Peace” – have their champions as well.
In the category of best leading actress in a play, Laurie Metcalf (“Roseanne”) is a very strong contender for the new “A Doll’s House, Part 2,” a followup to a classic play by Henrik Ibsen. Her strongest competition appears to be Laura Linney in a revival of Lillian Hellman’s vintage drama “The Little Foxes,” for which Cynthia Nixon (“Sex and the City”) and Richard

Kevin Spacey hosts the 71st Annual Tony Awards, Sunday on CBS.
Thomas also are nominated in supporting categories. Other recognizable names among this year’s nominees include Kevin Kline (“Present Laughter”), David Hyde Pierce (“Hello, Dolly!”), Sally Field (“The Glass Menagerie”), Josh Groban (“Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812”), Danny DeVito (“The Price”), Nathan Lane (“The Front Page”) and Andrew Rannells (“Falsettos”).
In addition to the awards handed out in competition, James Earl Jones, 86, will receive a special Tony Award acknowledging his long and acclaimed stage career. The actor previously won two Tonys in competition, first in 1969 for “The Great White Hope,” then in 1987 for his towering performance in August Wilson’s “Fences.” Jones was last seen on Broadway in a hit 2015 revival of the comedy “The Gin Game,” opposite Cicely Tyson.

Growing up in small-town Ohio, Mary Murphy didn’t have much use for dance. In high school, she competed in track, played drums in the marching band and hung out with her three brothers, telling people she was her parents’ “fourth boy.” Her career objective was to become a physical education teacher.
But it was while studying PE at Ohio University that she took a modern dance course and fell in love. After graduation she worked in a dance studio, but it wasn’t until a fateful trip to the U.S. Championships at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York that her destiny would reveal itself to her.
“It was like something out of a movie scene with the two big double doors, they opened them and I walked in ...,” recalls Murphy, who rejoins the judging panel of “So You Think You Can Dance” when it opens its 14th season Monday, June 12, on Fox. “I saw all these couples just like floating across the floor and the rhinestones, the feathers, the hair, the makeup – everything that I actually wasn’t. And it hit me like something out of a movie on a cellular level, like a lightning bolt. Electric went through my entire body ... and I said out loud, ‘I’m gonna become a professional ballroom dancer and I’m gonna be the United States champion.’ ”
She’s done that and more, counting U.S. and Austrian national titles, ownership of a dance studio and competition, and judging duties at various events among her career
accomplishments. She’s proud that shows like “SYTYCD” and “Dancing With the Stars” have raised the profile of the art form in the national consciousness, and thinks the world would be a better place if more people danced. “There wouldn’t be too many wars ,” she says, “if everybody was doing the West Coast swing or the mambo or something like that, I can assure you.”

When you think about it, Food Network’s “Incredible Edible America with the Dunhams” was an idea waiting to happen.
Jeff Dunham is a stand-up comic and ventriloquist whose job requires him to frequently be on tour, thus exposing him to all manner of eateries across the country. His wife, Audrey, is a food blogger with an extensive knowledge of all things culinary. So their Monday food/travel series is just a natural extension of what they already do.
“We would always make it a goal when we went to some city,” Jeff Dunham explains, “we would try to find the perfect restaurant or whatever restaurant that the locals loved with the best food or the craziest food – we would always try and do that. And it just hit us ... Why couldn’t we just turn this into a television show?”
In the six-episode series, the couple check out local hotspots in Atlanta, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Austin, Texas, sampling the most outrageous, over-the-top creations. They range from the yard-long sandwich with all manner of meats, cheeses and other ingredients wrapped in a baguette in this week’s episode in L.A., to the $777 burger served with a bottle of Dom Perignon in Sin City.

“Face Off” is back to normal. Almost. Following an “All Stars” round with earlier contestants returning in teams of two, the special-effects-makeup competition starts its 12th Syfy season Tuesday, June 13. Host McKenzie Westmore – who hails from Hollywood’s top family of movie and television makeup artists – again sets players on various creative challenges as they vie for $100,000 and the approval of industryprofessional judges Glenn Hetrick (“The Hunger Games”), Ve Neill (a three-time Oscar winner, for films including “Mrs. Doubtfire”) and Neville Page (“Avatar”).
“What we’re doing this time,” Westmore explains, “is that instead of individual people as contestants, we’re doing two teams, almost like two (makeup) shops. On a movie, you would have two shops competing for the job, so that essentially is how this season is going to play out. And I have to relearn certain things; I’m not necessarily calling people by name, but by shop.”
One consistent aspect of “Face Off” is the feedback Westmore gets about it being

all-family viewing. “Many times,” she says, “mothers and fathers will come up and thank me because it shows their children about camaraderie and teamwork and helping one another ... and that it doesn’t matter whether you win or not. You are all winners, across the board.
“I also love that with younger kids, it’s helped parents explain – as I was able to with my own son – that monsters don’t exist. I was like, ‘Sweetheart, Patrick (Tatopoulos, Westmore’s production-designer husband) would be out of a job if monsters existed. He would just go to the forest and pick them up and put them in his movies. But they don’t. He has to make them.’ And that was the end of it.”
Also pivotal to “Face Off” as a mentor to contestants is Westmore’s father Michael, an Oscar winner for “Mask” and a former staple of the “Star Trek” franchise. Indeed, his latest book is titled “Makeup Man: Making Up the Stars From Rocky to Star Trek”; his daughter has her own makeup pursuit,

Extremely active on social media in supporting “Face Off,” Westmore will revisit her past in July as a Los Angeles “Fan Festival” reunites her with other stars of the daytime serial “Passions.”
“I never would have thought about it,” she admits, “but it did come to my attention – and when I saw that they were collecting a lot of the actors, I said, ‘You know, I have to do this.’ We were all family at one time, and we were all in it together, just as we are now with ‘Face Off.’
“I also wasn’t happy with how the show ended,” notes Westmore. “I didn’t like that Sheridan (her ‘Passions’ character) didn’t marry Luis ... but it’s been many years, and I always have such a big heart toward the fans, because I wouldn’t be where I am without them. Anything I can do to give back to them and make them feel appreciated, I will always do, for the rest of my life.”

Martin Kaymer may not be the highest ranked golfer on the PGA Tour, but he did win the U.S. Open in 2014. In fact, two of his three career wins are Majors, and his third was at the Player’s Championship in 2014, which many considered to be the “fifth Major.” Perhaps Kaymer can rise from the lower ranks and pull the surprise once again, when the U.S. Open takes place Thursday through Sunday, June 15 to 18 on Fox and the Golf Channel.
The Open will be played on a fairly new course, which is Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin. This will be the Badger State’s first time hosting the U.S. Open, which has been played on 51 courses around the country. Erin Hills opened in 2006 and is located about 35 miles northwest of Milwaukee. It’s been tailored especially for hosting the U.S. Open, which it was awarded for this year.
Kaymer had a wire-to-wire run at the U.S. Open in 2014, becoming the first non-British European golfer to do so. This was just a few weeks after his Player’s Championship, and later that year he won the PGA Grand Slam of Golf played by the four major champions. In 2010 he beat Bubba Watson in a playoff to win the PGA Championship. He may best be known, however, for his final putt on the 18th hole at the 2012 Ryder Cup which culminated a four-shot, come-from-behind win for Europe to retain the Cup. Perhaps he can rise to a similar occasion at Erin Hills.

Any parent with a budding paleontologist under their roof will want to point them in the direction of an original kids’ series recently premiered on Amazon.
In “Dino Dana,” young Michela Luci (“Odd Squad”) stars in the title role of a “paleontologist in training,” who after a chance encounter with Trek (Trek Buccino) from “Dino Dan: Trek’s Adventures” and his Dino Field Guide, begins to see dinosaurs all around her, thus leading her into adventures.
Each episode features plenty of action and is loaded with interesting dinosaur facts that the series applies to kid-relatable experiences, and viewers learn about 11 new species. And your tour guide for this trek through this CGI-animated dino landscape is Dana, played by the 11-year-old Canadian actress who admits the series was as educational for her as it should be for viewers.
“Dana is a very spunky paleontologist,” Michela says. “She’s adventurous and she’s very confident in her work. She doesn’t care about what other people think of her. She just loves what she does and I really admire that.”
In the series, Dana dances with dinosaurs, gets spit on and splashed at and even picked up by them. This, of course, required some acting skill on the part of Michela, who simply relied on her imagination to play those scenes.
“I had to put myself in Dana’s shoes,” she continues, “because Dana can see dinosaurs but Michela can’t. So I had to pretend that I was Dana and Dana sees the dinosaurs so putting myself in her shoes made it a lot easier for me to see the dinosaurs. And I would just think of what the dinosaurs would be doing and I’d almost have like a little movie about these dinosaurs in my head, based off of the script, and I would just put them in front of me.”
