Life and Lifetime remain ‘UnREAL’ for series stars in Season 2

For two familiar television faces, what’s happened with their current series since its debut last summer seems unreal.

A Peabody Award, an American Film Institute Award and – for Constance Zimmer – a Critics’ Choice Award weren’t in her mind, nor fellow star Shiri Appleby’s, when they started their roles as producers of a fictional dating show on the Lifetime drama ‘’UnREAL.“

That’s what happened, though, and it’s given the actresses extra energy and enthusiasm for the show’s second season that begins Monday, June 6.

“I’m still so pleasantly surprised at how it has affected so many people from so many different walks of life,” says Zimmer, who got added confirmation when she attended the recent White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

“Especially when you’re in D.C., you think they’re only going to want to focus on political shows, so I

was super-excited to talk to people about ‘UnREAL’ there.”

Named best supporting actress in a drama series at January’s Critics’ Choice honors, “Entourage” and “House of Cards” veteran Zimmer (also seen last season on ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) returns as Quinn King, the tough-minded executive producer of “Everlasting” –the reality show within the show – with “Roswell” and “Life Unexpected” alum Appleby (who recurred on CBS’ “Code Black”) back as emotionally invested producer Rachel Goldberg.

“You want to live up to what you achieved the first time around,” notes Appleby, who also takes a turn behind the cameras as director of the sixth new “UnREAL” episode. “When we made the first season, there were no expectations of us. Nobody paid any attention to us, but I definitely feel the pressure this year ... not that it’s coming from anyone other than myself.”

Much of the first-year drama of “UnREAL,” created by executive producers Marti Noxon and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro, hinged on the arc of Rachel as she wrestled with her loyalties and values. Appleby says her alter ego is still on “an emotional roller coaster, for sure, but it’s really a season about watching her be a survivor –how she gets knocked down and picks herself back up and, as things really start to fall apart, how she holds on to some semblance of control of her life.

“Rachel and Quinn are really at odds,” adds Appleby. “They start out on the same team, but circumstances pull them apart. Rachel is really standing up to Quinn and saying, ‘I am my own person. I don’t need you. I can do these things on my own.’ She starts to see that she’s not successful because of Quinn, she’s successful because of who she is.”

While some Season 2 challenges faced by the

Killing ‘Sleepy Hollow’s’ Abbie was ‘the decision that needed to be made’

“UnREAL” characters are familiar, others are new, the latter generated in part by the fact that “Everlasting” has its first African American bachelor, played by B.J. Britt (and channeling, directly or indirectly, concerns about diversity that some followers of ABC’s “Bachelor” franchise have voiced). Whether the effect will be as big as the one Season 1 had, the cast and crew surely have reason to hope for that now.

“Good reviews are one thing, but winning awards for making groundbreaking television has sent us into the wildest-dream category,” Zimmer reflects while admitting her interest in watching actual reality shows is the same as when “UnREAL” began. “I prefer coming at it from the perspective that ‘Everlasting’ is the only show I know, as far as playing Quinn goes. It hasn’t drawn me to (the genre) any less or any more than I was drawn to it before.”

Sleepyheads were stunned back in early April when the “Sleepy Hollow” Season 3 finale killed off Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie), who has been the star of the show alongside Tom Mison since the supernatural drama premiered.

On a call with reporters, Fox chairman and CEO Dana Walden fielded questions about the decision to kill Abbie off and whether that means Season 4 is the final season for “Sleepy Hollow,” which returns midseason in 2016-17 on Fox. Walden says it doesn’t necessarily mean Season 4 is the last and also that the network initially balked at the idea of killing off Abbie.

“We’re not announcing that it’s the final season. Frankly we’re not sure if it’s the final season or not,” says Walden. “What we know is Tom Mison’s a big star, and the Ichabod Crane character has been so central to the series and the storytelling – he feels like an original, big Fox character.”

She adds, “There were a variety of factors that led to the end of the season this year. It was not a decision that we wanted to make initially. We ended up being put in a situation where that’s the decision that needed to be made. But we don’t feel like it had to be the end of the life of the show.”

As for the backlash after Abbie died, Walden says fans are enthusiastic about Mison carrying the show.

“While there was backlash, there was also a tremendous amount of enthusiasm from fans about the show coming back and about Tom having the ability to be the center of the series and discovering new dynamics and new relationships. It’s a very original premise, and we felt like it had greater life in it. There was no reason to end it at that point.”

Shiri Appleby stars in the Season 2 premiere of “UnREAL” Monday on Lifetime.

Ask any wine lover what got them into wine and you’ll likely get an interesting answer – and probably an interesting story to go along with it.

Celebrity oenophiles are no different. They got started any number of ways – through a family member, in college or maybe from dinners with wine-loving friends.

For Kathie Lee Gifford, co-host of the third hour of NBC’s “Today,” wine calls to mind happy times with family while growing up in Europe and Maryland. Today, it’s a source of income and fun for her as an owner of Gifft wines.

“You know what they do in Europe – and people get crazy about it here,” Gifford says. “My parents never said, ‘What would you like, merlot tonight?’ No, they’d let me have a little, teeny sip and they’d put it on their finger. Or when we lived in Germany, my daddy would let us have a tiny, little sip of his beer – suds. And I equate such lovely, wonderful memories with being a happy family. Nobody was ever drunk but we were celebrating all the time.

“Wine has been a part of every culture since the caveman,” she continues. “I got a feeling the caveman had a wine cellar in there. And it’s such a part of all of literature, poetry, and everything in life is sweeter to me when you celebrate and have a beautiful glass of wine to go with it.”

And for Gifford, that wine would preferably be white.

“I’m a white girl,” she says. “I love the red wines that we put out but if I had my preference, it would always be a very dry, light chardonnay or pinot (grigio).”

Former NASCAR great and current Fox racing analyst Jeff Gordon is also owner of a line of wines, Jeff Gordon Wine. His is more a case of interest by immersion, having grown up in California wine country.

“I’m from Vallejo, Calif., which is the next town over from Napa,” he explains. “And as a kid, just driving through the vineyard area and wondering what it was all about and just being kind of in awe of the beauty in that area and then later in life,

getting the chance to enjoy some great meals and some great wine. And a good friend of mine in the business who was handling our PR at the time was into wine, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about doing your own wine?’ And he kind of talked me into doing it and so we’ve been doing it since 2003-2004 and have enjoyed.”

For Gordon, blends are where it’s at.

“I like a really good blend with a cabernet sauvignon base and maybe a little merlot/syrah blend in there,” he says. “But some of the best wines in the world are blends even though we don’t always know it and they don’t always say that on the bottle, even some of the top bourdeaus. I mean, I definitely love cab but I prefer just to mix it with a little bit of something that you can blend it with that just kind of smooths it out and really creates great balance.”

Another sportscaster, former Fox baseball analyst Tim McCarver, didn’t invest in a vineyard but he did buy a house in Napa Valley. He got turned on to wine during his playing days in the 1960s and ‘70s and he continues to enjoy the grape today.

As for whether that would be a red or white wine, McCarver responds with a “Yes” and a hearty laugh.

“I like cabs. I like chardonnays also,” he says “I like the big chardonnays of France. You know, it’s such a blending world now, almost like the people who drink it. There are blends of grapes and people.”

Kathie Lee Gifford

It’s never easy for a pageant winner to give up her crown, as the latest Miss USA is now finding out.

Olivia Jordan is the first Oklahoman to hold the title, adding to the significance she’s felt in carrying out her duties for the past year. That job will go to someone else as she crowns her successor in the 65th annual edition of the competition, which Fox will televise from the T-Mobile Arena at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand on Sunday, June 5. Not only will the 50 states and the District of Columbia be represented, there’s a 52nd entrant for the first time, voted in by the public through a contest conducted via Twitter.

“It has been an incredible year,” lively Tulsa native Jordan reflects. “It has been crazy, and there definitely have been ups and downs and challenges and obstacles, as is always true in life ... but if I had the chance to do it again, I would. To represent the place where I grew up was surreal. I got to go home and speak at my high school and stand on the field where I used to be a cheerleader. I had no idea then what my future would hold, or how huge the opportunities were that were ahead of me. I hope I encouraged all those kids to think big and dream big.”

Miss USA Olivia Jordan preps for the end of her reign

Jordan is gratified that the reactions to her as Miss USA signal the ongoing relevance of the pageant, staged by the Miss Universe Organization (and formerly co-produced by Donald Trump). “My experience has been that these competitions are still very much a part of our culture,” she says. “It’s an opportunity to empower young women to set goals to become the greatest versions of themselves – to work on their public-speaking skills, their interview skills, skills that are relevant across the board in life.

“All across the world, I’ve seen how relevant this is,” Jordan notes. “Even when I was in New York, people from Brazil would come up and ask for a photo and tell me they’d grown up watching the Miss Universe Pageant as we watch the Super Bowl. It’s a family activity, and for other countries, it really is a huge thing. And even in the U.S., it’s still very relevant.”

The personal relevance for aspiring actress Jordan (who appeared in “Hot Tub Time Machine 2”) extends to having made health-care issues her Miss USA platform, her having a bachelor’s degree in health science from Boston University. “I’ve never had any political aspirations,” she maintains, “but this year, I’ve had the opportunity to lobby for (organizations concerned with) ovarian cancer as well as the Alzheimer’s Association, and I learned that you can truly make a difference. If you speak to your senators and write to your congressmen, you can really have a voice.”

Jordan’s literal voice was in question – as was that of everyone else present – as a contestant in last December’s Miss Universe Pageant, when host Steve Harvey nowfamously made an incorrect announcement of the winner and had to dial that back.

“It just didn’t feel real,” Jordan recalls. “it was a very bizarre moment, and I think all our hearts immediately sank for Miss Colombia. But I was standing next to Miss Philippines, who is now Miss Universe, and there was excitement for me. I had just gone through that same feeling of, ‘You didn’t get there, your dream isn’t coming true, move on.’ Then I was so joyful for her because to hear in the next second, ‘You know what? It’s not over, it is you, you are the winner,’ is amazing.”

Patrick Fugit of “Outcast” on Cinemax

“Right now, I am watching a lot of ‘Vikings’ with my girlfriend. And of course, ‘Game of Thrones’ is out so we’re watching our ‘Game of Thrones.’ ... On my list, ready to go for viewing pleasure, I always have ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ and ‘Firefly.’ Those are some of my favorites ever.”

Constance Zimmer of “UnREAL” on Lifetime

A great deal of “Game of Thrones” is about politics. Do you follow news about world politics yourself these days? Yes, in fact, I follow your politics every day, because they have a lot of consequences to us (here in Denmark). I remember in 1979, my mom took me to a demonstration against nuclear warheads in Germany. This was a kind of small, local thing and I don’t know how much if any coverage it got in America. But when one of your presidential candidates said recently that he couldn’t make any promises about whether he would use nuclear weapons, it felt like a terrifying throwback to a time we don’t ever want to go back to. The very idea that anyone would even bring that into the conversation is just very scary.

A lot of us fondly remember your shortlived 2008 Fox fantasy series “New Amsterdam.” Did you enjoy working on it?

I loved it, too. First of all, I love history, so (it’s great) if I can do anything where you can bring in history, particularly with New York, which is such a crazy city with such a rich history. Every week you’d go back in time and I saw places in New York that I never imagined existed. It was just so much fun, but that’s just the nature of this business. We had OK ratings. In fact, if we had the ratings today that we had back then, we’d be the biggest thing on network TV, but things have changed. It was a fun show to do.

Would you ever be interested in working on another U.S.based TV series?

Yes. There are so many great TV shows happening right now. I am actually in the process finally of getting a green card, so it’s definitely on my mind.... There’s a lot of crazy things in your country, but I love it every time I go there. I would love to spend more time there.

Andy Richter of “Celebrity Food Fight” on Food Network and “Conan” on TNT

“Right now, it’s eagerly anticipating ‘Game of Thrones.’ But ‘Better Call Saul,’ ‘The Americans.’ We record ‘SNL’ every week. It’s like reading the newspaper in this house, and now my kids watch it, too. ... I’m also looking forward to ‘The Strain,’ when that comes back on.”

“Of late, what we’ve recorded would be ‘Girls,’ ‘Mr. Robot’ and ‘The Knick.’ And we’re very obsessed with ‘BoJack Horseman’ and ‘Bob’s Burgers’ at our house.”

Shiri Appleby of “UnREAL” on Lifetime

“I heard that ‘Girls’ was incredible this past season, so that’s definitely something I’m looking forward to watching when I get a moment.”

Lord Stanley’s Cup, which is awarded annually to the NHL champion, may be the most storied championship trophy in all of the sports. The quest for its next temporary owner continues this week as the Stanley Cup Finals continue with Game 4, Monday, June 6, on NBC. This date is obviously D-Day and ironically the Finals could end should one team be fortunate enough to sweep this best of seven series in four games. If not, Game 5 airs Thursday, June 9, also on NBC.

While at press time it’s anyone’s guess who will represent the East and West Conferences of the NHL in the Finals what is known is that there will not be a repeat champion. The Chicago Blackhawks, the 2015 victors, were eliminated in seven games by the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, ensuring that another team will hoist the trophy at season’s end.

The Stanley Cup dates back to 1892 when then–Governor General Lord Stanley of Preston, Ont., Canada began awarding the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup to amateur teams. It didn’t become the NHL championship trophy until 1924. The winning team holds the cup until they are dethroned and there has not been a repeat champion since the 1996-97 and 1997-98 Detroit Red Wings.

While the Montreal Canadiens have won the most titles (24), recent dynasties date back to the 1980s when the New York Islanders won four straight from 1981-83. Then, Wayne Gretzky (the Great One) and the Edmonton Oilers dominated the NHL, winning five titles from 1984 through 1989.

Last August’s Season 3 finale of “Devious Maids” ended on a literally explosive note, when the mansion of Adrian and Evelyn Powell (Tom Irwin, Rebecca Wisocky) turned into a fireball, just moments after Adrian had rushed back inside.

As the hit Lifetime series returns for Season 4 on Monday, June 6, the characters are dealing with the aftermath of that horrible incident, and the once-haughty Evelyn struggles literally to put the fragments of her once-privileged life back together, Wisocky explains.

“It’s a great metaphor, because their world as (the Powells) that we have come to know blows up,” she says. “Whether or not Adrian Powell survives, he will be a large presence moving forward. Because the world explodes for Evelyn she is untethered. She is left utterly without the things that once defined her, so that’s a brand-new journey that you will see her go on.

“Evelyn is forced to redefine who she is and, in true Evelyn fashion, she makes a lot of missteps along the way. You’ll see her in some situations that you would never have expected. She spends a night in jail, and she gets taken to church in many forms.”

The actress says she fell in love with theater as a shy child, when her mother enrolled her in the kind of summer community arts program for which Wisocky remains a tireless advocate to this day.

“I got over my shyness enough to try (doing a play), and I was hooked,” she says. “Theater was my team sport growing up. Soon I was pretty focused on trying to have some sort of life in the arts and I’ve been very lucky with that. It’s a source of great pleasure and curiosity to be able to find ways to empathize with creatures that have nothing to do with my own life. ... We all hope to find our own personal band of freaks along the way, and I found mine in theater.”

Born: Nov. 12, 1971, in York, Pa.

Marital status: Married since October 2015 to award-winning lighting designer Lap Chi Chu

Education: Graduated with honors (and a BFA degree) from the Experimental Theatre Wing of New York University

Awards: Won a 2008 Obie Award for Jordan Harrison’s Off-Broadway play “Amazons and Their Men”

Pets: Carlo, a Puerto Rican street dog she rescued from an animal shelter while taking part in a charity event in that country with “Devious Maids” castmates Roselyn Sanchez and Judy Reyes

Previous TV credits: Once guest starred as Bree’s mother on “Desperate Housewives”; recurring roles on “The Mentalist,” “The Exes” and “American Horror Story”; guest appearances on “True Blood,” “Big Love,” “The X-Files,” “Grimm,” “Once Upon a Time,” “Castle,” “Longmire” and “Criminal Minds,” among many others

Coming up: A guest appearance on the new EPIX original comedy series “Graves,” starring Nick Nolte Favorite book: “Questions about favorites make me nervous, but I’ve been thinking a lot about ‘Geek Love,’ because we recently lost Katherine Dunn, the author of that book. It’s about perception and celebrating the outsider, things that keep me returning to it. I’m also in love with ‘Hyperbole and a Half,’ which is actually a graphic novel by Allie Brosh. It’s about depression and dogs and absurdity, and it’s heartbreaking and beautiful and really lights my fire.”

Favorite film: “Not necessarily my all-time favorite, but I love ‘Pina,’ Wim Wenders’ movie about (choreographer) Pina Bausch. It has a bent way of looking at the world and relationships. It also happens to be a movie I saw with my now-husband. That was one of the many times during our friendship when I found myself thinking, ‘OK, I’m going to marry this guy.’ I also really love ‘Valley Girl,’ a movie my girlfriends and I saw over and over again during my brooding adolescence.”

Favorite record: “Well, now, of course, I’m listening to everything Prince ever wrote or performed. I remember hearing so many of his songs when I was really young and being blown away and titillated and confused and excited. His passing was a great loss, obviously. So many of us share the same heroes. It also may be worth mentioning that I will stop and weep anytime I hear a bagpipe playing. That just does it for me.”

SUNDAY

6 p.m. on KOKI

2016 Miss USA

It’s the crowning moment, literally: The exiting titleholder, Olivia Jordan of Oklahoma, places the glittery headwear atop her successor at the conclusion of this 65th annual competition. The event is staged at the T-Mobile Arena at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand — and for the first time, there’s a 52nd entrant alongside representatives from each state and the District of Columbia, determined through social-media voting.

8 p.m. on SHOW House of Lies

The new episode “Violent Agreement” finds Marty (Don Cheadle) trying to get Kaan and Associates back into consideration for a buyout, while computer network issues inadvertently lead to a discovery.

Elsewhere, a distracted Jeannie (Kristen Bell) has a hard time spending a day away from the office. Josh Lawson and Ben Schwartz also star.

9:05 p.m. on AMC

Feed the Beast

Fresh off his well-received turn on last season’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” David Schwimmer returns to series television in this new character-driven drama as alcoholic widower and single dad Tommy Moran, who is at loose ends when his ex-con best friend, Dion Patras (Jim Sturgess, “21”), talks him into rekindling their old dream of opening a restaurant in the Bronx. Michael Gladis (“Mad Men”), Pilar Herrera, Christine Adams and John Doman (“The Wire”) also star.

MONDAY

7 p.m. on KOKI

So You Think You Can Dance

Chicago is known for many things, but is young dance talent one of them? The new episode “The Next Generation: Auditions No. 2” supplies the answer, as judges Paula Abdul, Jason De-

rulo and Nigel Lythgoe go to the Windy City to survey youthful hopefuls seeking a spot in the competition — eventually aiming to be teamed with an All-Star in the season’s finals. Cat Deeley is the host.

8 p.m. on TNT Rizzoli & Isles

The premiere of the seventh and final season of this police procedural picks up the action in the aftermath of a shooting that figured in the Season 6 cliffhanger, as the team tries desperately to find Alice Sands (guest star Annabeth Gish) and bring her to justice before she destroys Jane’s (Angie Harmon) life with her twisted obsession in “Two Shots: Move Forward.” The story continues in another new episode that immediately follows. Sasha Alexander also stars.

9 p.m. on AMC TURN: Washington’s Spies In the new episode “Judgment,” Mary (Meegan Warner) decides to take matters into her own hands as she attempts to kill Simcoe (Samuel Roukin) by herself. Elsewhere, Benedict Arnold (Owain Yeoman) may discover he has a fool for a client as he defends himself in his court-martial, while Ben (Seth Numrich) reunites with the woman who saved his life.

9:01 p.m. on KTUL Mistresses Harry (Brett Tucker) gets a visitor — and the series gets a new cast regular — as Tabrett Bethell plays his sister, Kate, in the new episode “Mistaken Identity.” Her arrival complicates Harry’s relationship with Joss (Jes Macallan), especially when Kate reveals problems in her marital engagement. April (Rochelle Aytes) gets a big professional chance, while Karen (Yunjin Kim) debates her own occupation. Jerry O’Connell and Tia Mowry-Hardrict guest star.

TUESDAY

7 p.m. on KOKI Hotel Hell

Is it an inn or a storage area?

Gordon Ramsay has to wonder when he visits a West Virginia site that looks more suitable for hoarders than overnight guests in the new episode “Town’s Inn, Part 1.” As anyone who’s seen this show would expect, Ramsay finds the situation abhorrent — and how much work does it take to correct it? Well, simply consider that more than one hour of this show is required for that mission.

8 p.m. on KOKI

Coupled

It’s double the pleasure, double the fun — and, potentially, double the heartache — when the helicopter delivers two bachelors instead of one in the

new episode “At First Sight.” That would seem to increase the women’s chances of making a love connection, but it also expands the room for disappointment if they don’t. One of the already aligned couples runs into trouble over something that is dividing many people these days: politics. Terrence “J” Jenkins hosts.

9:01 p.m. on DISC Dark Woods Justice

This new unscripted series might well have been created by filmmaker David Lynch (“Twin Peaks”) with its setting: the Olympic Peninsula forests of the Pacific Northwest, where the ancient trees shelter dark secrets. Here, the bad guys are poachers trying to steal the forest itself: Many of the trees in America’s “last untamed wilderness” are so rare, so valuable and so coveted that thieves are willing to risk serious prison time to take them. Sheriff’s deputies in the region are determined to see that doesn’t happen, however.

WEDNESDAY

7 p.m. on CMTV

2016 CMT Music Awards

From Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., some of country music’s biggest superstars are scheduled to perform during this annual fan-voted award show. Blake Shelton, Florida Georgia Line, Chris Stapleton, Jason Aldean, Keith Urban, Luke Bryan and Thomas Rhett are on the performance slate, with more artists to be announced. Among this year’s nominees, Carrie Underwood — who has won CMA Video of the Year honors a record six times — is tied with Cam and Chris Stapleton with three nods each.

8 p.m. on KOKI Wayward Pines

Terrence Howard (“Empire”) and Oscar winner Melissa Leo reprise their first-season roles in the new episode “Once Upon a Time in Wayward Pines,” and the plot makes it logical why they would appear again. The story relies heavily on flashback sequences as it explains how Jason Higgins (Tom Stevens) came to lead the First Generation. Nurse Pam’s (Leo) return

worries the residents. Theo (Jason Patric) continues to seek the reason he’s in the town.

9 p.m. on KJRH The Night Shift

The medical drama’s seasonopening episode concludes with “The Thing With Feathers,” as the treatment of a young caraccident victim is impeded by the history of the boy’s family. As that crisis unfolds in San Antonio, another develops in Afghanistan, where Drew and Syd (Brendan Fehr, Jennifer Beals) try to handle the aftermath of an operating-room assault.

9 p.m. on FX The Americans Season 4 of this critically acclaimed Cold War spy drama reaches an explosive conclusion in the new “Persona Non Grata,” which sees Philip and Elizabeth (Matthew Rhys, Keri Russell) sprinting in a life-ordeath race with the FBI to recover a dangerous package. Is a cliffhanger in the cards? And will Paige (Holly Taylor) follow her mom and dad into the family business? We may have to wait until Season 5 for some of these answers.

THURSDAY

8 p.m. on A&E Streets of Compton

This new three-part documentary miniseries, which premieres tonight with two back-to-back episodes, followed by next Thursday’s finale, examines the predominantly working-class California community that has endured a reputation for gang violence over the past few decades. More recently, however, Compton has emerged as an entrepreneurial hot spot, driven significantly by native sons and daughters who have returned to help boost their neighborhoods. Some of those celebrities revisit and reflect on the place they called home.

8 p.m. on HIST Alone

After enduring three weeks of this unsparing competition, mental and physical struggles take their toll on the remaining participants. Some of them are starting to feel crushed beneath the brutal reality of their hardships, while others must battle more internalized hardships to stave off a burgeoning compulsion to throw in the towel and go home in the new episode “Trial by Fire.”

FRIDAY

7 p.m. on KQCW Masters of Illusion

You could use your imagination to determine the contents of a new episode titled “Beatbox Magic and the Human Beverage Dispenser,” but that title should give a pretty good indication of

what you’ll hear and see. Greg Frewin, Adam Wylie, Eric Buss, Michael Grandinetti, and Barry and Stuart are the illusionists who fulfill that aim. Dean Cain is the host. Another episode follows.

9 p.m. on SYFY Wynonna Earp

The surviving Earp sisters may have been shaken to their cores by the discovery they made in the Barrens, but Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) has to shake it off and swing back into action after a gambler is torn to bits in his hotel room in a new episode called “Landslide.” Henry (Tim Rozon), meanwhile, meets a mysterious stranger on the road leading out of the Ghost River Triangle.

9 p.m. on MAX Outcast

As he warns the members of his congregation to beware of the evil in their town, Anderson (Philip Glenister) urges two parishioners to join his “righteous army” in the new episode “(I Remember) When She Loved Me.” Meanwhile, Kyle (Patrick Fugit) takes matters into his own hands when it comes to caring for his mother, Sarah (guest star Julia Crockett), who receives a sinister bedside visit from a mysterious stranger.

9 p.m. on SHOW Movie: Meet the Hitlers

A person’s name can play a big part in his sense of identity, although the world is full of people with unfortunate last names that carry comic and/or vulgar implications. “Unfortunate” is, however, a relative term, and in the premiere of this 2014 documentary, filmmaker Matt Ogens (“Confessions of a Superhero”) travels from Utah to Ecuador to the Rhineland of Germany and elsewhere to talk to people who have to live with a moniker that is steeped in the darkest historical infamy.

SATURDAY

4 p.m. on KJRH

148th Belmont Stakes

New York’s Belmont Park is the setting for the third and final leg of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown — after the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

The Belmont is run at a grueling 1 1/2 miles, a distance that has proven to be a deal breaker for many a hopeful. American Pharoah was more than equal to the task a year ago in becoming the first to win all three races consecutively since Affirmed in 1978.

8 p.m. on AMC Hell on Wheels

As this historical drama returns with the last seven episodes of its fifth and final season with the new “Two Soldiers,” Cullen Bohannon’s (Anson Mount) determined push to finish work on America’s first transcontinental railroad leads to a time of reckoning with the men standing in his path: the mercenary Chang (Byron Mann), the violent and bloodthirsty Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl) and the greedy Thomas Durant (Colm Meaney). Which characters will be alive as the final credits roll in a few weeks is anyone’s guess.

9 p.m. on AMC

The American West

Robert Redford is among the executive producers of this new eight-episode limited series that chronicles the evolution of the American West after the Civil War, from 1865 to 1890. The series also recounts little-known stories of such Western legends as Wyatt Earp (Jonathan C. Stewart Jr.), Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. Exclusive interviews include actors associated with Western films and TV shows, such as Redford, Tom Selleck, Kiefer Sutherland, James Caan, Burt Reynolds and Ed Harris. 10:30 p.m. on KOKI

The Grinder

Dean (Rob Lowe) becomes certain the only reason Claire (Natalie Morales) isn’t interested in him is that she’s passing professional secrets to a rival, a hunch he shares with Stewart (Fred Savage) in “The Curious Disappearance of Mr. Donovan.” Stewart doesn’t believe it, making Dean determined to prove himself right. When Claire and Debbie (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) become friends, though, Stewart starts to have doubts. William Devane also stars.

Late Night with Seth Meyers

House Speaker Paul Ryan today defended himself against criticism from fellow Republicans over his reluctance to endorse Donald Trump and said, “I just want to get to know the guy.” “Us, too,” said Eric and Donald Jr.

Donald Trump announced today that if he wins the presidency, Chris Christie will lead his transition team and help put together the Trump administration. Because if there’s anything Christie knows how to do, it’s fill a cabinet.

North Korea’s ruling political party announced today that they will be giving leader Kim Jong Un a new title. I’m gonna guess: Is it the heavyweight title?

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

The big story this weekend was that the racehorse Nyquist won the Kentucky Derby, while a horse named Exaggerator came in second place. Or as Exaggerator put it, “Hey, I won the Kentucky Derby!”

The big Trump news today is this audio tape that resurfaced from 1991, where Donald Trump apparently posed as his own publicist during a phone call with People Magazine. People are

saying it’s definitely him, but he’s saying it’s not. Hillary Clinton was like, “Isn’t it annoying when people dig stuff up from the 90’s and use it against you?”

Late Show With Stephen Colbert

A tow truck driver in Asheville, North Carolina, who supports Donald Trump evidently stranded a disabled woman on the side of the road after he saw a Bernie Sanders bumper sticker on her car. Telling the woman that she was obviously a socialist and that she should call the government for help, he then drove away on a road that I assume he paved himself.

The Late Late Show With James Corden

Donald Trump is finally sitting down with his nemesis, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, to discuss unifying the Republican Party after they have been trash-talking each other for months. Ryan is in a difficult spot. On the one hand, Trump has made a lot of offensive statements. On the other hand, Trump is his party’s only chance at winning — and because it’s Trump, both of those hands are very, very tiny.

Jimmy Kimmel Live

According to a new study, L.A. has the most or best road rage in the United States. We are number one road rage-wise. We have the unique ability to get blinded with fury on the way home from a yoga class here.

Conan O’Brien

A former speechwriter for John McCain said Donald Trump has an unstable personality. This is coming from the guy who wrote the words, “Please welcome my running mate, Sarah Palin.”

Paul Ryan
