‘American Woman’ –Finding her voice

Adversity brings out the character of an ‘American Woman’

Bonnie Nolan is a woman in for a rude awakening – and it’s probably the best thing that could happen to her.

As played by Alicia Silverstone (“Clueless”) on the half-hour comedy “American Woman,” premiering Thursday, June 7, on Paramount Network, she’s the 1970s Beverly Hills trophy wife of Steve (James Tupper, “Grey’s Anatomy”), a realtor whose substantial commissions have them and their two daughters sitting pretty in their swanky SoCal home.

That is, until she catches him cheating on her, and she shows him the door. Now with a divorce looming, Bonnie is forced to stand on her own two feet for the first time and support the kids, but with no marketable skills that won’t be easy.

Fortunately she has two supportive best friends ready to help: Kathleen (Mena Suvari, “American Beauty”), a woman living off Daddy’s money with the help of closeted gay boyfriend Greg (Cheyenne Jackson, “30 Rock”); and Diana (Jennifer Bartels, “Broken”), a singleton stuck in an unsatisfying life and bank job.

The series is full of the trappings of the ’70s – bell-bottoms, pantsuits and references to Richard Nixon, along with lots of trysts, drug use and cigarette smoking – and is based on the life of Kyle Richards (“Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”), a series co-executive producer on whose late mother the character of Bonnie is modeled.

“It’s a real survival story,” Silverstone explains, “and it’s a real awakening and a liberation story of all three females, finding their voices and being liberated and being brave and taking risks, and Bonnie’s at the center of that. She does it first, like she’s the one who goes and burns the house down. She basically burns the house down and she’s like, ‘Wait a second, I have nothing. How am I going to get back?’ And her friends are there to help her, but then they have their own very, very deep, interesting stories.”

Indeed, while Bonnie struggles to get on her feet and Diana languishes in frustration, rich girl Kathleen tries to make a go of it by opening her own casting agency with Greg. Her friends warn her he’s interested in her only for her money, but both Kathleen and the actress playing her, Suvari, see a deeper connection there.

“That’s what’s so beautiful,” Suvari says, “is that it really is about a soul connection, people that are attracted to one another and both sort of not living in this honest space within themselves. Because I think with Greg, he’s struggling with his own form of identity. And then with Kathleen, she is to a certain extent so desperate to just be loved and so used to keeping up appearances and everything is OK. ... It’s picture-perfect, but then it’s really not. And then it’s sort of like you get to this place where you can’t ignore it anymore.”

“Power” (season premiere — July 1, Starz) Season 5 of the drama opens with Ghost (Omari Hardwick) throwing himself into his work and seeking revenge following the death of daughter Raina. He’s also in a dangerous alliance with former drug partner Tommy (Joseph Sikora) and sworn enemy Kanan Stark (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson). Lela Loren and Naturi Naughton are also among the cast returnees.

As its third season continues, what do you see as the difference of “Code Black” in relation to other medical shows?

(The setting) serves a different community because it’s a county hospital, and that’s what makes the show so incredibly resonant for me ... that (a character) can come in and be the voice for something like affordable health care.

A lot of the time, the reason doctors go into the practice is to care for the community, and that

makes this less of a technical show. Every time you turn around, there’s another doctor show on the air, and I think what marks this one as different is that we keep that community voice in the writing. I love that.

“Code Black” got a very late start on its season by returning in April. Are you satisfied with the scheduling?

What I’ve learned from being in the business is that there’s a certain element of television where you just throw up your hands and say, “It’s out of my control.” It’s like that serenity prayer, really ... “Accept the things you can’t change, and change the things you can.”

My hope is that the audience continues to respond to the show. It would be nice to have a slam-dunk hit, but that’s almost impossible – or, at least, really very hard – in this day and age, with the competition from cable. My eyes are wide open.

You recently became an author with “The Seasons of My Mother: A Memoir of Love, Family and Flowers,” which deals with your relationship with your mother and her struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. How did you find doing it?

I’d be editing the book left, right and center if I could ... but at some point, you have to stop and say, “This is it.” It was a great process. I just wish my mom had been alongside me during it.

The ‘Major Crimes’ division is closed – on TV, anyway

Q: Will “Major Crimes” be returning this year? – Joyce Habeger, Salem, Ohio

A: No. TNT’s Mary McDonnell-starring spinoff of “The Closer” ended its run in January, though the cast and crew hadn’t necessarily envisioned the cancellation coming when it did. Had it continued, it would have done so without one of its major characters – and we’re not being more specific than that here, so as not to spoil anything for those who might be planning to binge-watch the existing episodes, which are available on home video. When it ended, “Major Crimes” had just broken the 100-episode mark (finishing with No. 105).

Q: When will Kristin Kreuk’s new series be on? – Abby Hayden, via e-mail

A: July 11 is the scheduled premiere date for “Burden of Truth” on The CW, Kreuk’s traditional network (given the runs she also had there on “Smallville” and “Beauty and the Beast”), but Canadian viewers already have seen the first season of the new drama. It premiered on that country’s CBC network in January and ran through April.

Also an executive producer of the series, Kreuk stars in it as a corporate attorney who returns to her hometown to represent a pharmaceutical company in a case, but has to rethink which side she wants to be on, as she learns more about the matter. With Peter Mooney (“Rookie Blue”) also starring, the show has been renewed by CBC for a second season that begins production soon.

Seafood as fresh as can be on Cooking Channel’s ‘Beach Bites’

Whether it’s a beachfront clam shack or a dockside lobster joint, unpretentious waterfront dining is something we all love.

And they all have three things in common: They’re on the water, their prices are usually inexpensive and the seafood is always fresh. It’s exactly the type of off-the-beaten-path place Katie Lee looks for when scoping out locations for her Cooking Channel series “Beach Bites.”

“I like to go to places that are easily accessible for our viewers,” she explains, “so somewhere that they can easily get to and that has a reputation for food. So I’m looking for a destination that not only has beautiful beaches but also has a real sense of culinary personality, so to speak, so that you get a taste of what locals would have.”

As Season 3 of the culinary/travel series kicks off Thursday, June 7, Lee is back out on the road exploring the shores of the U.S., looking for fine dining near water in locales such as Charleston, S.C., where she got to eat some uber-fresh fried shrimp right off the boats; Catalina Island, Calif., where she tried the carnitas nachos; Nassau in the Bahamas, where she dined on hogfish and conch salad; and the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, the season premiere in which she sampled the crab gumbo.

“We went to this place Mary Mahoney’s and the gumbo is incredible,” she says. “They’re famous for it and that place has been there forever. ... You walk

in and feel the history. And everybody who’s there is in a good mood and everybody is talking and you chat with the different tables. And the gumbo – the secret of it is it’s just so fresh. It comes right out of the Gulf that’s right across the street, and the crab is so sweet and delicate, mixed with the gumbo spices.”

Later in the season in the Bahamas, Lee eats at an Arawak Cay seafood shack called Goldie’s, which makes a conch salad with conch as fresh as can possibly be served.

“The conch is still alive when they take it out to make the conch salad,” Lee explains, “so it’s super fresh. And they chop it up right there and serve it to you in a conch shell.

“I think Nassau is one of those places people think of as a cruise ship port,” she continues, “and they don’t really get outside of just that area where the cruise ship pulls in. And if you just explore just a little bit more, there is so much to see and it’s such a local flavor.”

A fresh round of improvisational humor begins as the sixth season of the show’s CW incarnation begins. They’re joined by celebrity guests — as with Ross Mathews here — who show whether they have what it takes to keep up with the trio’s penchant for quickly created amusement. In tonight’s twohour premiere, Plum’s frustrating life with a narcissistic boss (Julianna Margulies, “The Good Wife”) is disrupted by a newcomer (Erin Darke) who draws Plum into a provocative new world.
