Muskogee native Lonnie Barker recalls the values he learned from his hometown.
“Muskogee taught me a ‘never give up’ spirit,” the 1994 Muskogee
High graduate said. “It taught me to take what little I have and make a lot out of it.”
Barker, who performs as the inspirational rapper L. Boogie, said he wants to pass that message to Muskogee youth. He will join inspirational speakers
and performers at Summer Blaze 2017, 11 a.m. Saturday at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

People can celebrate independence on land and at lakes this weekend
By Cathy Spaulding Phoenix Staff Writer
People can celebrate American independence on land and at lakes this holiday weekend.
Haskell kicks off area celebrations Saturday with its annual Lake Fest at Haskell Lake.
Haskell utility clerk Toni Dowdy said the festival will feature food vendors, and “old school” games, such as frog jumping, egg toss, hay bale throwing and skillet toss.
Festivities begin at 9 a.m. Saturday with a free Kids’ Fishing Derby. Prizes will be given to the winners.
Youngsters also can enter a bicycle/wagon decorating contest, Dowdy said.
“Parents are bringing their kids to the fishing derby, they can put their bike in the trunk,” Dowdy said. “During the day we’ll have a corn hole toss and tic-tac-toe games to play, spend the day at the lake. We’ll have food vendors.”
The competitive games begin at 5 p.m.
“Men get to do hay bale toss, women do skillet toss,” Dowdy said. “Some guys just try to pick up the hay bale and toss it. Some guys try to lift the bales over their heads.”
The skillet toss features a cast iron skillet.
“I won it two years ago. It’s heavy,” Dowdy said, adding that she has no secret to winning.
“It’s just the luck of the flip and when you let it go.”
Toward dusk, a parachutist

comes down with an American flag, heralding the start of the fireworks display, Dowdy said.
Eufaula’s Independence Day celebration, Shoot for the Stars, begins 11:30 a.m. Monday
Daytime activities include inflated water slides, bounce houses and a challenge course. People can get wristbands for $5 each.
Music will be provided by disc jockey Timmy Ray. Food trucks include Mama Tig’s Pizza, Gourmet Grilled Cheese, Poppa Mac’s BBQ, and Ironhead Ice Sno Cones. Fireworks begin at dusk.
Pam Rossi, executive director of Eufaula Area Chamber of Commerce, said fireworks will be extra spectacular at the lake.
“You can view fireworks in your

boat on the water,” Rossi said. “We have the lake, so there is a nice backdrop.”
Timothy Baptist Church will offer food, games and free drawings at its Independence celebration at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Food will include corn dogs, chicken, hamburgers and snow cones. There also will be inflatable games for youth.
The main giveaway will be a two-night stay in Oklahoma City, including lodging, food, gas and two tickets to Frontier City or White Water Bay.
A fireworks display will begin at dusk.
Wagoner gets children involved in its Independence Day celebration Tuesday.
Youngsters can show their patriotism with bikes, trikes, wagons and other wheeled transportation during the Mary Stacy Independence Day Parade. The parade begins at noon Tuesday at the Wagoner County Courthouse, then will move along Cherokee Street, then down Main Street to the Wagoner City Historical Museum.
Liz McMahan, assistant

director of the museum, said the parade honors the late Mary Stacy, who used to host such parades.
“She loved it so much when she was here,” McMahan said. “That and her music.”
McMahan said children up to age 12 will have their entries judged.
Rotary Club members will serve free ice cream, she said.
Muskogee First Assembly hosts its annual Freedom Celebration at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Lead Pastor Steve Rose said the church will offer 500 American flags for $1 or $2 each.
He said he wants people to unite in the patriotic spirit.
“We are very upset at the divisions in our country,” Rose said. “We want people to come together and unite.”
The celebration will feature concessions and inflatable games.
A fireworks display will go off after dusk, Rose said.

As L. Boogie, Barker earned a Grammy nomination for his debut release “Naked & Unashamed” in 2008. His repertoire includes HipHop, rhythm and blues, soul and spoken word.
L. Boogie since has released “Love & Life: A True Story” and

This is the fifth Summer Blaze Barker has co-presented with William Lang, a 1995 Boynton-Moton High School graduate. Lang is an official with the Northwest Arkansas Fellowship of Christian Athletes and an assistant minister at Restoration Church of Northwest Arkansas.
Lang said he has seen a lot of growth since Summer Blaze started in 2013.
“There have been a great lot of kids, a lot of parents,” Lang said. “To see the growth and progress in all the young men and women is all the
more reason we want to offer this to the community,” Lang said. “They have a great future ahead of them if they just apply themselves.”
Summer Blaze speakers include Lang and Cherokee Elementary Principal Lori Jefferson.
Jefferson said Barker often comes to Cherokee to speak.
“We collaborated last year on Summer Blaze,” she said.
Jefferson said she will speak about creating a positive image.
“What do you want people to say about you now, as well as years from now,” she said.
Barker said he wants to offer youth positive messages.
The theme for this year’s Summer Blaze is Leadership, Identity, Truth. It is based on the Matthew 5:14 passage “You are the light of the world.”
Lang said this is the second year Summer Blaze has been at the MLK Center.
“It really went well, it was better for us,” he said. “A smaller venue allowed us to be more intimate and engaging.”

Children delight and small dogs hide as the boom of fireworks and multicolored lights brighten the night sky each July 4 in celebration of America’s freedom.

works on the Fourth of July,” said Don Nowlin, executive director of Greater Tenkiller Area Association.
The display will originate from the south end of lake, by the dam, in Vian on Highway 100.
There is no better place to view fireworks than the lake, according to Nowlin, and hundreds of boats
will be parked out there to view the show.
Camping reservations at campgrounds are available through the Corps of Engineers.
Donations are accepted for fireworks and can be mailed to GTAA, P.O Box 916, Gore, OK 74435. With easy access to drones,
Thomas Gardner, interim director of Tour Tahlequah, said the goal this year is to get good photos and video of July 4th fireworks.
“There’s no such thing as too many fireworks, and no better place to view them than the river or the lake, so I don’t think there’s any reason not to enjoy both,” said Gardner.

I n his first stint as host of “A Capitol Fourth,” John Stamos is guaranteed to have a big presence for an extra reason.
Not only will the “Full House,” “Grandfathered” and “Scream Queens” alum introduce other acts, he’ll also continue a frequent role of his – performing with music’s iconic Beach Boys – as PBS broadcasts the 37th annual edition of the Independence Day celebration Tuesday, July 4 (check local listings), from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.
“I’ve hosted quite a few things,” Stamos says, “but to me, this is the time to host a Fourth of July special about America and our freedom. Not to get political, but it’s going to feel great to talk
about what that means to us right now, with the way of the world. I think it might have a little more meaning this year. To me, it will.”
Also slated to appear on “A Capitol Fourth” are Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi as “The Blues Brothers,” country music’s Trace Adkins, Motown’s legendary Four Tops, Broadway star Phillipa Soo (“Hamilton,” “Amelie”), latest “The Voice” winner Chris Blue and – starting the 90-minute program with the National Anthem – Sofia Carson of the upcoming Disney/ABC TV-movie sequel “Descendants 2.” Jack Everly again will conduct the National Symphony Orchestra.
Just coming off a European tour with the Beach Boys, Stamos isn’t their only addition for “A Capitol
Fourth,” since Mark McGrath also will be with them.
“I’d sat in with them here and there,” Stamos recalls, “but the first time I really was featured with the band was in 1985, at the Fourth of July concert at the Washington Monument. We were in Philadelphia that day, and there was a million-and-a-half people there, then we went to D.C. that night and there was another million. That was pretty crazy.”
With the special having its traditional culmination in the 1812 Overture, cannon fire will accompany that Tchaikovsky classic ... and the program information stresses that will be “live,” possibly addressing last year’s situation, when some viewers noted fireworks from an earlier “A Capitol Fourth” telecast had been edited in, a

move prompted by inclement weather in Washington that night.
The Beach Boys also played last year’s National Memorial Day Concert for the same producers – who then included the founder of both events, the late Jerry Colbert – and Stamos (who will be back in Season 3 of Netflix’s “Fuller House”) reasons, “We need that type of music, and the sort of feeling that it evokes, now more than ever.
“Decency is at an all-time low and discord is at an alltime high, and we need to be at the concert or turn on the TV on the Fourth of July and hear this music, to escape or to remind us of happier times. I call it ‘heart music,’ because you don’t have to think too much about it ... and thank goodness we have it, to help lead us through.”

Ginger Zee may be a weather reporter by trade, but she’s been enjoying a lot of career variety lately.
Following her third-place finish in Season 22 of “Dancing With the Stars,” ABC News’ chief meteorologist – a staple of the weekday “Good Morning America” – has taken both edible matters and the environment to heart with her “Food Forecast” series on ABC.com, and she also has engaged in home renovation with husband Ben Aaron on DIY Network’s “Ben & Ginger: Renovation Realities.” She embraces such chances to show different sides of herself to the public.
“If I’m on ‘GMA’ and you see me for 30 seconds or a minute or whatever it is, I’m really focused and I’m doing what I love,” Zee says. “I’m putting together the puzzle that is the atmosphere, and that’s all you get.
“The reason people like to watch us, I think, is because they do feel like we are part of their family ... part of their breakfast table. If you get to know that person even more, it’s not going to hurt. It’s only going to help, and I hope that you get even more connected and we become even closer.”
Still, with parenthood also factored in now, Zee allows that her schedule can be demanding. She notes, “I do a split shift many days where I do ‘Good Morning America,’ I have a couple
of hours, and then I have to go back and do ‘World News Tonight.’ I also wrote two books this year, and I’m working on the digital series.” With all of that activity, former Chicago weathercaster Zee isn’t complaining: “I had the baby, I started ‘Dancing With the Stars’ six weeks after that, and I feel like I haven’t stopped running since – which is a great place for me. That’s where I’m happiest.”

“The Alison Show”: Boasting the tagline “It’s pretty much a party,” Utah event producer Alison Faulkner’s channel has all aspects of party planning covered, from the menu and decorations to entertainment and attire, and for any occasion. She’s also an inveterate crafter and a major proponent of finding out what you’re good at in life and making it your career – as she clearly has.

It’s arguably tennis’ most prestigious tournament, if not its fastestpaced, and it kicks off for the 131st time this week as the game’s top players gather at London’s All-England Club for the 2017 Wimbledon Championships. ESPN will offer start-to-finish coverage of the year’s third Grand Slam event beginning the morning of Monday, July 3, and continuing through the men’s final on July 16.
For fans watching the action on Wimbledon’s famed grass courts, the man to beat has to be Andy Murray. The 30-year-old Scot and World No. 1 comes in as the defending champion and a player whose game is well-suited to the surface. However, he’s been plagued by health problems in the season’s early going, as well as disappointing performances early in the European clay-court season.
Another player with a history of success on grass is Roger Federer. The world’s fifth-ranked player skipped the French Open to gear up for London and a shot at a record eighth title there. At the advanced age (for tennis) of 35, he’s still a force to be reckoned with, as his victory this year in the Australian Open proves. Looking for a bounce-back performance at Wimbledon is three-time champ Novak Djokovic, the 30-year-old Serb who has struggled since winning his first French Open title in 2016. The World No. 4 has sought the counsel of Andre Agassi in an effort to

Digital-video studio New Form comes forth with this anthology series that brings popular fan fiction to life starring the biggest names in digital media.

turn around his flagging game. At this writing, the jury was still out as to whether that was successful.
And not to be ignored is 30-year-old Spaniard Rafael Nadal, whose dominance on clay seems to overshadow his proficiency on grass and the fact he owns two Wimbledon crowns – but none since 2010. The world’s second-ranked player comes in off his record 10th French Open title.
On the women’s side, Serena Williams’ pregnancy-induced absence means a new champion will be crowned, and that party will come from a wide-open field. A serious contender has to be Karolina Pliskova, the 25-year-old Czech and World No. 3 who is playing well and has a big serve that translates well to grass. On the downside, she has never made it past the second round in London.
Top-ranked Angelique Kerber could also be a factor. The 29-yearold German was one a year ago, making the finals before bowing to Williams. But a balky hamstring and disappointing performances in the spring give reason for doubt.
Garbine Muguruza, the 15th-ranked Spanish-Venezuelan, might also be worthy of consideration, as she’s been playing well of late (her round-of-16 exit at the French Open not withstanding) and she has experienced success here, making the final in 2015.
And World No. 4 Simona Halep seems to be turning her game around after poor early season performances.

“The Bunny Hole,” www.bunnyholeshow.com
Tony-winning producer Ken Davenport (“Kinky Boots”) is the creative force behind this 12-episode mockumentary series in the style of “Reno 911,” about a struggling brothel in Pahrump, Nev. The cast includes TV veterans Mary Ellen Ashley (“Law & Order: SVU”), Allan Greenberg (“How to Be Single”) and Julia Mattison (“How to Live Like a Lady”), and stage players Elaine Marcos (“Annie”) and Ryan Duncan (“Shrek”).

Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois will be the location of this year’s Women’s PGA Championship, which wraps up Sunday, July 2 on NBC. Defending champion Brooke Henderson, who at age 18 became the youngest player to ever win the Women’s PGA Championship, and the second youngest to win any major, would love to stage a repeat performance of 2016. In that event she held off top-ranked Lydia Ko in a playoff at Sahalee Country Club near Seattle to win her first Major. The playoff between Henderson and Ko also meant the end of Indee Park’s winning streak. Park had won three straight Women’s PGA Championship titles from 2013 to 2015.
Henderson is yet another bright young star on the LPGA tour, which continues to grow in popularity,
including in her home country of Canada. With her Women’s PGA Championship title last year she became the first Canadian to win a Major in 48 years. In 2015 the Canadian Press named her Female Athlete of the Year.
As an amateur, she was the topranked women’s golfer before deciding to turn pro at the end of 2014. As of this writing she has eight professional wins, including three on the LPGA Tour. She took some time out last summer (2016) to represent Canada at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where she finished seventh in the Women’s Golf Tournament right after winning the Cambia Portland Classic in July. Her best finish this season came at the HSBC Women’s Champions in March when she finished tied for fourth.

Cameron “Cambo” Bowling
If getting away from it all and living off the land is your thing, a new series on go90.com might scratch your itch.
In the docu-series “Going Cambo!,” Alabama survivalist Cameron “Cambo” Bowling is your guide as he takes his city-slicker guests on wilderness adventures and shows them how to not only survive but also enjoy everything the outdoors has to offer. From hunting and foraging to hiking and finding a suitable place to bed down for the night, this 20something self-taught woodsman has much raw knowledge to impart on how one can make the wilderness one’s own private theme park.
“The woods has always been a huge part of my life even since I was tiny,” Cambo explains in his thick Southern drawl. “I wasn’t the most social person ever when I was little. I didn’t care nothing to go out to eat with Mom and them. I didn’t care to go nowhere, go to parties or nothing. ... And then in high school ... I thought life would be a hell of a lot better off in the woods, so I just up and (ran off) and pretty much been out here ever since.”
In each six- to nine-minute episode, Cambo brings his companion on a 48-hour trek through woods and marshes and demonstrates basic skills for surviving in the wild, including rappelling down cliffs, navigat-
ing in and out of caves, lighting fires and yes, killing your own dinner.
In the opening episode, he brings rap artist Cook Up Boss out of the streets of Nashville and teaches him how to catch and eat scorpion (“he wasn’t happy about the scorpion,” Cambo says), then demonstrates the finer points of gutting, skinning and cooking squirrel, which the guest liked.
And while Cambo reports the cuisine received mostly positive reviews, the means of acquiring it didn’t go over so well in some cases. In fact, one young visitor became sick at the sight of Cambo killing a goat.
“Nowadays, there’s a separation of people, food and animals,” Cambo says. “Like you go to the grocery store and it’s not an animal laying there, it’s just a pack of meat. It’s already skinned and processed and all you’ve got to do is mash it up and cook it, so people don’t associate food with animals anymore.”
“None of my guests ever got used to it,” he continues. “One little boy threw up when I killed a goat. His name was Tanner. Literally made him sick in his stomach. He got sick and he told me, ‘I’ve ate goat a million times, lamb chops and all that.’ But to see a goat and see him as food, I don’t know, it’s hard to explain. I think separation of people and food is about the best way to explain it.”
