Honor Heights to be filled with ‘All That Jazz’

Muskogee Community Band swings into summer with “All That Jazz.”

The concert, at 7 p.m. Saturday at Honor Heights Park, features jazz vocalist and 1972 Muskogee High graduate Andrea Baker. She will be joined by her husband, saxophonist Steve Wilkerson.

Community Band Director Jerry Huffer recalled Baker from her days at MHS. He said she sang the lead in high school musicals and performed at Fin and Feather Resort.

Huffer said he recently saw Baker and Wilkerson at a Tulsa music store.

“And I booked them on the spot,” he said, adding that he scheduled them to perform for the Play Away the Hunger concert and Symphony in the Park.

Baker said she looks

forward to performing in her hometown.

“It will be like old home week. I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Baker said. “We had so many great musicians come through Muskogee High School.”

She said one MHS graduate plays violin with a Chicago orchestra. Another is a music professor at University of Southern California.

“I’m very proud to come

Teams get ready to sling some mud at Mudstock

10th annual Mudstock presents volleyball tournament benefiting WISH and MCCOY

It probably is impossible to pinpoint how much Mudstock mud has been slung over the past nine years.

People can sling gallons more at the 10th annual Mudstock, begin-

ning 8 a.m. Saturday at Three Forks Harbor. The mud volleyball tournament benefits Women in Safe Home (WISH) and Muskogee County Council of Youth Services (MCCOYS).

Jaushlyn Hoover of MCCOYS said at least 43 teams have signed up.

With up to 10 people per team, that could mean more than 400 muddy volleyball players, she said.

That doesn’t count 700 to 1,000 people who simply like to watch.

“It’s fun to watch,” Hoover said.

“It’s fun to get out there and get muddy.”

If you go

Teams can register at the site on Mudstock morning. Hoover said registration is $300 per team.

Games begin at 9 a.m.

The winning team gets a $1,500 cash prize. Second-place team gets $500. Hoover said T-shirts also will be available.

Businesses like to send teams, Hoover said.

Darla Tate, an office worker at Advance Workzone Services, said her employer usually sponsors two or three teams.

“It’s just fun to get out with your

co-workers,” Tate said. “It’s a chance to do something different.”

Tate couldn’t share any secrets to Mudstock success.

“Stay on your feet,” she said. “I usually end up with a face full of mud the first five minutes of play.”

Fun isn’t limited to the mud pits.

A kid zone with inflatable attractions will be at the site.

Food trucks also will be available.

Hoover said Mudstock 2016 raised more than $33,000 for WISH and MCCOYS. She said the money is especially needed this year.

“Both WISH and MCCOYS had budget cuts in their programs,” she said. MCCOYS offers prevention and intervention programs for young people. Programs include outpatient behavioral health, an alternative education program for districts in Muskogee and Wagoner counties, and a program to help first-time juvenile offenders.

WISH offers a shelter for victims of domestic violence, rape, sexual assault and stalking.

out of the program,” she said.

Baker has performed with the Stan Kenton Orchestra and the Ray Anthony Orchestra. She also played with Oklahoma guitar great Barney Kessel.

Steve Wilkerson, another Oklahoma native, has performed with Mel Torme, Sarah Vaughn, Count Basie, Barbara Streisand and Glen Campbell. His baritone sax release “Shaw Nuff” was featured in an article in Downbeat Magazine, according to Wilkerson’s website.

Wilkerson said he and Baker will perform some pop-jazz numbers. He said people can expect smooth Charlie Parker-type jazz.

“It’s easy to listen to, a great evening, lots of fun,” he said.

Baker will do some scat singing, improvised vocals that mimic instruments.

Those attending the Play Away the Hunger concert earlier this month got a preview of Saturday’s concert.

However, Huffer said people can expect more smooth jazz, along with standards dating to the 1920s.

The Muskogee High School Band will sell concessions during the concert. However, many families, churches and other groups enjoy bringing their own baskets and beverages. People also are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

During intermission, there will be an auction of original art to help offset expenses of the event.

In case of rain, the symphony will be in the hangar at Love Hatbox Sports Complex.

“They blossom in the environment,” Tibbits said.

“We see remarkable changes in their personality and demeanor. It brings them out of their shell. It’s created a community within itself. It’s a social network. Some children who were shy in the beginning have become social butterflies.”

Tibbits said there is a camaraderie among these artists and mentors that is not seen in typical theatrical productions.

she is portraying Annie. Her mentor, Sadie Foster, 12, is enjoying everything about show, especially working with Eden.

The two friends sit together and hold hands while talking about the show.

“I’ve always liked being on stage and singing,” Eden said. “Sometimes, I even call myself a movie star.”

Sadie has been in several TPC productions and was happy to sign up for this production. She likes working with the kids in the program, making new friends and watching the kids make new friends.

“They’ve worked really hard, and they’re really looking forward to being in the spotlight and shining,” Sadie said.

For Peggy Kaney, director of “Annie, Jr.” and president-elect of TCP, the Penguin Project is a continuation of other community projects.

“Tahlequah has really been going out of their way – with the Wild West Fest and the handicap-accessible park one of the Leadership Tahlequah classes is doing – to be much more inclusive in our community,” Kaney said.

Penguin Project will be an annual event, Kaney said.

“We hope the community will come out and enjoy the show,” she said. “It’s a good way to support the hard work of these young people and show them their work is valued.”

For a donation of $25 or more each, community members may adopt a TCP Penguin. This will help fund a child with special needs to develop creative skills related to the theater arts, provide an opportunity to participate in the community theater experience, facilitate interaction with age-level peers through joint participation in a community theater experience and more. To download a form to adopt a penguin, visit the Tahlequah Community Playhouse Inc., Facebook Page. TCP is a nonprofit organization, and gifts are tax-deductible.

‘I’m Dying Up Here’ shows the dark side of making people laugh in 1970s L.A.

It’s the early 1970s and comedy in Los Angeles is king. And ruling over it with an iron fist on the Sunset Strip is one Goldie Herschlag.

As played by Oscar winner Melissa Leo (“Frozen River,” “Treme”) on Showtime’s hourlong drama series “I’m Dying Up Here,” premiering Sunday, June 4, she’s the tough-talking, chain-smoking owner of Goldie’s, a comedy club for up-and-comers hoping to be discovered and maybe get on “The Tonight Show.” But that’s only if this hard-bitten mama bear thinks they’re ready to play the main room.

“The club is called Goldie’s,” explains Leo, “and if the comics want to stand up and do comedy in her joint, there’s a certain rule she goes by and she does happen to have a particularly really good funny bone. Not that she’s funny, but she knows what’s funny. She knows what works. It doesn’t

have to do with the race of the comic or the gender of the comic. She knows what’s funny and funny works. And so she’s gained a reputation around town that if you want a really good comic, you’ll probably come over to Goldie’s to find them.”

Among the regulars are Cassie (Ari Graynor, “Mystic River”), a pretty, blond Texan with an edgy style; Bill (Andrew Santino, “Mixology”), a troubled comic with talent and an acid tongue; Edgar (Al Madrigal, “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart”), a pothead who uses his Mexican heritage as fodder for his act; Ralph (Erik Griffin, “Workaholics”), a comic and TV writer with an outsized physique and personality; and Adam (RJ Cyler, “Vice Principals”), a hungry young African American comic who by day doubles as Goldie’s handyman. In the opening episode, two young Boston comics (Michael Angarano, Clark Duke) arrive in L.A. to stay with their buddy

until they can find regular work, only to learn he’d been killed in a traffic accident hours after nailing it in his big break on “The Tonight Show.” As the gang at Goldie’s mourn one of their fallen brethren over shots at the bar, one comic wonders if they should book a church for the funeral, only to be corrected by Goldie: “You’re in one.”

“She’ll kind of morph into what she needs to be for the situation,” Leo says.

“She’s canny and brave and courageous in a way, a woman alone doing what she’s doing at the time she’s doing it. I don’t think there’s another human being, never mind man or woman, doing what Goldie was doing in the early part of the ‘70s, investing in stand-up comics ... . (If you didn’t) have stand-up comedy, you wouldn’t have Comedy Central. You wouldn’t have comedy as a frontline entertainment in the world without what happened here in California.”

“I’m

Dying Up Here” premieres Sunday on Showtime.

The series is based on the book of the same name by William Knoedelseder and counts among its executive producers Jim Carrey, who cut his teeth doing stand-up on the Strip in the ’80s. The show certainly has the look of a ’70s comedy club, from the mod decor to the thick cigarette smoke and the sideburned, bell-bottom-jeaned men. And none of the comics come off as particularly happy people.

It should also be noted that many of the cast – among them Madrigal, Griffin and Santino – have backgrounds in stand-up, thus adding to the show’s authenticity.

“It’s a hard, hard life to be expected to make everyone laugh all the time,” Leo says. “And most of them have that pressure on themselves as much as anything else, and it’s a complicated and dark personality, in fact, that makes us laugh.”

There aren’t many actors who garner a Tony nomination for their Broadway debut performance. That’s a fact not lost on one such thesp, “Orange Is the New Black’s” Danielle Brooks.

“It’s only an actor’s dream to be recognized ...,” the 27-year-old product of Greenville, S.C., says of the nomination for her performance in “The Color Purple.” “I mean, I’ve prayed for a great career, but this early in the game, to have only been acting professionally for five years and this being my first Broadway show, to receive a nomination I was very, very grateful and humbled by it; because I know there are people who work their whole careers trying to get nominated. So it’s been a cool experience.”

Brooks, who plays Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson in the Netflix dramedy (which begins streaming its fifth season Friday, June 9), went right to work after graduating the prestigious New York performing arts academy the Juilliard School in 2011, landing roles in “Blacken the Bubble” and the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s production of “Servant of Two Masters.” She left both in 2013 when she landed a two-episode gig as Taystee in Season 1 of “Orange,” which was then upgraded to a full season. She became a series regular in Season 2.

In 2015, she made her Broadway debut as Sofia in “Purple,” for which she bagged a Best Featured

Actress in a Musical nomination, and she was doing this alongside shooting Season 5 of “Orange,” two painful roles that she says took an emotional toll on her but also informed each other.

“With TV, you have to move quickly,” Brooks explains. “You don’t have time to live in a place of fear. You have to make a bold choice and deliver, and I think it really helped me with going back into theater because I was able to step into Sofia in those first few rehearsals and just make bold choices, and I think it really helped me to find the (character without) wasting time.”

Teen chefs battle for the last spot.

Katie Lee has fun –and food – in the

sun on Cooking Channel’s ‘Beach Bites’

Harbor no pity for Katie Lee.

As host of “Beach Bites with Katie Lee,” currently in its second season Thursdays on Cooking Channel, she is tasked with traveling to tropical locales such as Florida, Hawaii, Alabama and South Carolina, sit at beachfront restaurants and sample the best dishes they have to offer – and do it during the dead of winter. And get paid for it.

Not bad work if you can get it.

“Oh yeah,” agrees Lee with a hearty laugh. “Yeah, we were in the South the whole time. One of the greatest perks is that we film in February and March, so I get to leave New York City when it’s freezing and go to all these amazing beach locations. My friends are very jealous.”

This season takes Lee to places she’s never been to try the local cuisine, ranging from a whole pig roasted in the ground on a beach in Maui (which she says is as good as it sounds) and a trout that she caught herself and then grilled in Lake Havasu, Ariz., to mai tais and beef empanadas in Clearwater, Fla., and a chicken-fried steak made from wagyu beef in Alabama.

And then there was also the familiar, one of which was a stop at a vacation spot that evokes happy memories for her.

“It was really special for me to get to go back to Myrtle Beach, S.C.,” she says. “That’s where we always went when I was a kid and I hadn’t been there in almost 20 years, so I really enjoyed getting to go see all of my favorite spots from childhood.”

What book are you currently reading?

“I just started ‘The Woman in Cabin 10.’ It’s a thriller. I’m about 40 pages into it and I’ve decided I can’t read it at night (laughs). It’s scary but I like it.”

What did you have for dinner last night?

“Well, last night I was at the Met Ball (the fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York) and it was sea bass, kale and some roasted vegetables.”

What is your next project?

“That’s a good question. ‘The Kitchen’ is still going strong on Food Network and that really keeps me busy. We’re in production every month so I’m constantly writing recipes for the show. I’d like to eventually do another book but I’m not really sure what it’s going to be yet.”

“Beach Bites” host Katie Lee

Sooner or later, James Corden was bound to take his show home with him ... “home” being England.

That’s about to happen for three nights, as CBS’ “The Late Late Show With James Corden” originates from London from Tuesday through Thursday, June 6 through 8. Being taped at Central Hall Westminster – which offers a view of the Thames River – the episodes will showcase Great Britain through the prism of the Emmy- and Tony-winning host’s comedic sensibility, with relevant guests (who were yet to be confirmed at this writing) pitching in.

journey is not only difficult, but apparently expensive.”

Luckily, Corden has an additional network backing his trek: Sky, which runs his program in the United Kingdom. “The truth is, this wouldn’t be able to happen without that involvement,” Corden confirms, “just with the cost and logistics. I feel very fortunate that I have an affiliation with two broadcasters who are open enough creatively to collaborate on such a thing.”

going to be doing it in an unconventional theater that holds something like 1,000 people. And quite incredibly, the company there that handles tickets for television shows had a million requests for this ... which is slightly terrifying, really. I can’t quite get my head around it.”

“It takes massive organization, which I’m very thrilled I don’t have to be part of,” the amiable Corden muses of taking “The Late Late Show” on the international road. “It’s a logistical nightmare, because when you build these shows, you build them to be in one place. It’s difficult enough moving a show down the road to another studio in America, but moving an American show as far as you can get in one plane

“Orange Is the New Black: Season 5,” www.netflix. com/title/70242311

In the wake of Poussey’s (Samira Wiley) murder, Litchfield Penitentiary is in full riot mode and the inmates are angry and demanding change as Netflix’s Emmy-winning dramedy begins its fifth season Friday. Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon, Kate Mulgrew, Jason Biggs, Natasha Lyonne and Danielle Brooks are among the returning cast members.

Though Corden staged one of the most popular editions of his “Carpool Karaoke” in London – with music superstar Adele, which has been a massive view-getter on YouTube – he maintains such a segment isn’t planned for his trip back. Don’t be surprised if it ultimately happens, though, being a “Late Late Show” staple (and having recently yielded its second annual CBS primetime special).

As for the course of each hour otherwise, “We have a studio here that seats about 200 people,” says Corden, “and there, we’re

“The Upgrade,” www. bravotv.com/blogs/ one-mile-at-a-time-benschlappig-how-to-travelon-miles

Any traveler with a taste for first class but a budget for coach would do well to check out this series from Ben Schlappig, the blogger behind One Mile at a Time, who shows how to score premium airline tickets and high-end hotel rooms using only rewards programs such as airline and credit card miles — which he also explains how to accumulate.

Still, Corden realizes his talk-show popularity hasn’t come only from America, thanks in sizable part to Internet viewing. “The show plays in 155 countries,” he notes, “so to take it to my hometown feels like a very organic thing to do.” And while he’ll enjoy seeing his parents while there, he admits that’s not such a rare thing these days.

“I’ve got to be honest, I see more of them now than I ever did at home,” Corden reports. “They’re always here! With the age that they are, or the age that my wife’s parents are, the prospect of coming to the sunshine of Los Angeles is far too appealing. We have an open-door policy, and we’re never short of guests.”

“Dumb: The Story of Big Brother Magazine,” www. hulu.com/dumb-the-story-of-big-brother-magazine

This documentary tells the story of Steve Rocco, the owner of Maverick Skateboards who in 1992 decided to create his own magazine, Big Brother, after prominent publications kept rejecting his controversial ads for his products. In a time before the Internet, the magazine went on to gain cult notoriety for its irreverent, naughty and often blatantly stupid content. Rocco and his dysfunctional crew of misfits are at the center of the story.

Aledmys Diaz, Cardinals’ dynamic young shortstop

The St. Louis Cardinals missed the post-season last year for the first time since 2010. That can’t be blamed on then-rookie shortstop Aledmys Diaz, who was a top-five Rookie of the Year candidate last season. Thus far in the 2017 season, the Cards are again contending in the National League Central and will close out a weekend series at Wrigley Field with their Route 66 rival the Chicago Cubs, Sunday, June 4 on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.

Part of the Cardinals’ success is their ability to find and develop young talent, and Diaz surely fits the mold. Diaz grew up on the same street in Santa Clara, Cuba and played baseball with former Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, who was killed in a boating accident in 2016. As a teenager Diaz was a standout in the Cuban National Series before defecting from Cuba, and spent some time playing in Mexico.

In 2014 he signed with St. Louis and quickly began to ascend through the minor leagues. He made his Major League debut early in the 2016 season, and played in 111 games, batting .300 with 17 home runs and 65 RBIs. A late-season injury sidelined him for six weeks, at a time when the Cardinals were competing for a Wild Card slot, obviously coming up short.

Meanwhile, the NL Central is emerging as one of the toughest divisions this season. Although he’s off to a slower start than last season, a young player like Diaz could play a big role in the next round of the Route 66 rivalry.

Diaz could y a g role in n th t e next rouund d of f the Route 66 rivalryy.

CULTURE, RACE, CLASS AND FOOD MIX AND MINGLE IN FIRST WE FEAST’S ‘FOOD GRAILS’

Minya Oh, former VH1 personality Miss Info

If homegrown foods and the people and places from whence they came are your thing, a new series from the online magazine First We Feast may be of interest.

In “Food Grails,” which posts to the First We Feast YouTube channel every other Wednesday, former VH1 personality Miss Info highlights food scenes in neighborhoods around the country and explores how pop culture, race and class help shape a city’s culinary identity.

“It is all about the passion that both people who create food and the people who eat food share, and a lot of it is experiential,” she explains. “It’s not just about the ingredients that go into a salmon pizza slice; it’s all about where that pizza slice lives. What is the neighborhood around it? Who are the people who make it? Who are the people who are finding it? And who are the people who have never heard of it but would really, really love it?”

The first episode opens in South Los Angeles, where Miss Info checks out the underground taco scene at three concerns: Taco Mell, a thriving eatery in Leimert Park; Trap Kitchen, a roving food party in South Central; and All Flavor No Grease, a grill that operates out of a driveway in Watts.

All of the food in this episode looks absolutely mouth-watering, but

the tacos produced by Keith Jarrett and All Flavor No Grease have the distinction of inspiring truce between rival gangs.

“I was kind of speechless and I was very, very moved even while talking to him,” Miss Info says, “because he mentioned that he has seen friends and neighbors affected by gang violence right there on the block where he is operating. And yet when he started building his business and selling his quesadillas and his tacos, the local gang members got together and said, ‘Hey, you know, we see what you’re doing and we support you. And the way that we’re going to support you is we’re going to try and make sure that nothing that the gangs are doing messes it up.’

“So they kind of had a truce ...,” she continues. “And this was all in support of this one man and his mission to feed the neighborhood.”

Other episodes look at Jamaican beef and culture in New York, mumbo sauce in Washington, D.C., and po’ boys in New Orleans.
