If Sarah Shahi believes acting takes her into another world, that’s more literal than ever for her now.
Seen earlier this month in a guest-star return to “Chicago Fire,” the “Person of Interest” alum resumes full-time series work as the NBC fantasy-drama “Reverie” premieres Wednesday, May 30. From “Extant” creator-producer Mickey Fisher and Amblin Television, it casts Shahi as an ex-hostage negotiator turned college professor. She leaves the classroom when her former boss (Dennis Haysbert, “24”) enlists her to retrieve people so immersed in a virtual-reality program, they’ve lost their consciousness in a dream-fulfillment space called Reverie.

“Those are so ideal, the people are getting stuck in that universe and dying in this one,” notes Shahi. “My character has to go into their minds, figure out what they’re running from, and try to get them to come back before it’s too late. And watching this woman get crazier and lose her sense of reality is pretty fun, too.”
Shahi allows “it was hard sometimes to come home and have a cup of tea and go to bed, then do the same thing the next day.” Home is active enough for Shahi: She and actor husband Steve Howey (“Shameless,” “Reba”) have three children, including twins.

Especially on the heels of the Amblinproduced, VR-heavy movie “Ready Player One,” Shahi believes the time is right for “Reverie.” She recalls that when she got the call to do the show, “I was like, ‘Amblin? You mean, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin?’ There was no way they were going to want to work with me and also be nice guys, and Darryl and Justin (‘Reverie’ executive producers Frank and Falvey), they’re my pals now.
“If I’m going to be working my a... off,” Shahi notes of negotiating “Reverie’s” plentiful special effects, “I want to surround myself with people like them. I just feel lucky, on so many levels, that that’s exactly what’s happened.”

How has your time as “The Bachelorette” gone so far?
Things are going so well! I have done some amazing, crazy things, and the guys are great.
Were you surprised to be asked to be the new Bachelorette?
We had been talking about it for a while, just kind of gauging whether I was fully ready. As
things progressed, I knew that I wanted to do it. I went into (“The Bachelor”) wanting to find love and find my partner. Obviously, it didn’t work out with Arie (Luyendyk Jr.), but things have never changed for me ... so when I was offered this, it was a hard “yes” all around.
How were your friends and family regarding your decision to do this again so soon?
They were a little bit hesitant. I’m so close with them, they didn’t want me to leave for a couple of months again. At first, they were like, “Just find somebody and date normally back in Minnesota” – but after talking with them, they knew that I could do this. And it was easier for them this time around, because they trust my judgment and know it’ll be better following my heart on my terms.
How difficult was it for you to face Arie on the “After the Final Rose” edition of “The Bachelor”?
It’s one thing to see the person for the first time after a big breakup, and it’s another to do it on live TV in front of millions of people. I was so nervous. Sometimes, I get really caught up in my own head, and I wanted to say the things I needed to say ... and to have Chris (franchise host Harrison) there to guide that conversation and to kind of lean on, it was wonderful. He’s helped me through this entire journey, and it’s been so good to get to know him.

A: It’s a stylistic choice that channels the years Meyers spent famously anchoring the “Weekend Update” segment of “Saturday Night Live.” Actually, when Meyers first assumed the host role on NBC’s “Late Night,” he did the more traditional style of monologue that involved his walking out to greet the audience. The time that dropping it saves might be considered minimal, but by having Meyers already at the desk when the show starts, he can dive right into his comedic news-of-the-day recap without waiting very long – or at all.

‘Man Fire Food’ opens Season 7 in smashing fashion
VAsk Roger Mooking what dishes or barbecue contraptions stood out the most while shooting Season 7 of Cooking Channel’s “Man Fire Food,” and he will tell you it’s more about the people.
“I met this really cool family in East L.A. this year,” he says. “They built a smoker and they put it in their backyard. They do pop-ups out of their backyard, basically, and the community comes out. They line up at their back gate and they’re slinging barbecue out of the back of their backyard. It’s really cool and it’s crazy and there’s just so many interesting personalities in the mix.
“This was pretty elaborate,” he continues. “They had a big smoker there, they had a huge pile of wood. Like they’re legit, doing this on the weekends and people know about it. People coming from all over L.A., driving into this little place in the ‘hood in East L.A. and knocking on these people’s gate and there’s a line and it’s really cool.”
As the new season opens with the first of 13 episodes on Wednesday, May 30, the Caribbeanborn, Canada-raised chef and host is back out on the road to check out the dishes and homemade contraptions people fashion to put flame to food, be it via grill or smoker. Among the stops this goround are Houston, to check out a custom-built trailer that can cook up to 600 pounds of meat at one time; Napa Valley, Calif., where locals cook large cuts of beef on a retrofitted asado cross; South Texas, to watch a massive smoker in action; and Southern California, to visit all manner of outdoor kitchens.

In Wednesday’s opener, Mooking goes to San Antonio, to see how pumpkins are roasted directly on coals, then peeled, seeded and smashed into pieces to be used in a salad.
“That was really cool,” Mooking says with a laugh. “We smashed these pumpkins with a shovel after we roasted them right on the coals on the ground and made a salad out of that – it was really, really good –with some (goat) cheese and some arugula and stuff. And very, very simple. The presentation was just fun and we got to smash some pumpkins.”
What book are you currently reading?
“ ‘Hyena’ by Rude Jude (Angelini) (laughs).”
What did you have for dinner last night?
“I had chicken and mushrooms hot pot with jasmine rice.”
What is your next project?
“I don’t like to talk about next projects. I just like to do it and then release it, so I never reveal what I’m working on. There’s lots. I’ve always got a million projects on the go and people find out about them when I release them.”

More than 500 contenders are expected in this year’s Bee, a huge increase over the previous record (293) that was set in 2009. The surge is due to a new rule this year that allows “wild card” entries to spellers who won a school-level bee but not a regional competition.
