Kelly Clarkson presides over NBC’s first Billboard Music Awards telecast
Kelly Clarkson will use her voice in several ways on NBC in the coming days.
The first “American Idol” has spent recent weeks on her first season as a full-time coach and mentor on “The Voice,” which ends its 14th round Monday and Tuesday, May 21 and 22. She’s also in a Red Nose Day edition of “Hollywood Game Night” Thursday, May 24 ... but first, Clarkson serves as host of the Billboard Music Awards – in the ceremony’s first NBC telecast after moving from ABC – on Sunday, May 20.
Among performers confirmed early for the event, Shawn Mendes and Korean pop act BTS (both nominated for Top Social Artist) are scheduled to take the stage during the threehour broadcast from Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. So are Camila Cabello (who has four nominations, including Top New Artist and Top Female Artist) and Dua Lipa. Ariana Grande is slated to open the show.
Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran are tied for the most Billboard Music Award nominations this year with 15 each. They’re followed by Post Malone (with 13), Imagine Dragons (11), Drake (nine), and Justin Bieber and Cardi B (eight each). Also figuring prominently into the competition – in which winners are determined from album and digital sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social-media engagement – are Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi, with seven bids each, and Taylor Swift (with five).
Clarkson counts three Grammys among her own music honors ... plus four American Music Awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards and a Country Music Association Award. Referring to “The Voice” as well as award shows, she admits with her typical candor to maintaining her own take on competitions, despite her new hosting role.
“I don’t know if it’s fair to ever compare,” she reflects, “because it’s a hard thing to do with any artist. That’s like saying Aretha Franklin is a better singer, or that Whitney Houston’s a better singer than Aretha Franklin because she sold more records. Well, that’s not true. They’re both undoubtedly amazing singers. It’s just that everybody has their own path.”
Clarkson goes as far as to say that she doesn’t think comparing artists is “ever a smart thing to do, especially when you just never know ... especially if you’re building a career. Not every career is ‘overnight,’ like mine or some people’s. (That was) because it was a brand-new thing that nobody had ever heard. The stars were aligned, so you kind of have to take into context what all’s happening.”
Indeed, Clarkson believes artists shouldn’t be discounted just “because they haven’t reached Lady Gaga potential. They pay their bills and they live their dream, and I think that counts. And that matters.”

What initially sparked your interest in science?
I was a little kid. I think I was playing Crazy 8’s, this card game, on the front porch and I got stung by a bee and it was traumatic. I was freaking out. And then my mom put ammonia
on it and somehow it neutralizes the proteins in the bee sting, it denatures them somehow and makes it feel better. And the ammonia bottle has a skull and crossbones on it and I thought “She’s trying to kill me!” which I can understand. It was fascinating because my brother had a chemistry set back when they were cool and dangerous, and he could make an ammonia-smelling compound in the palm of your hands. And the whole thing was fascinating. I think I was three years old and I thought science was cool.
Do you attend a lot of launches at Cape Canaveral?
Well, yeah. I’ve been to more than a lot of people, I guess, but I’m not a professional rocket-launch viewer.
Have you ever been to an Apollo launch?
Not Apollo but two shuttle launches and I’ve been to Maven, Juno, Curiosity. I tried to see Opportunity, the Mars rover, go but I had to leave before (the launch). But also I was there for New Horizons. That was spectacular. And I was there for LightSail and I hope to be there for LightSail 2 coming up this spring. I hope to be there for both – the first launch of the Falcon Heavy and the second launch. If you haven’t seen a rocket launch, it’s really cool. It was spectacular.

A: It did, a year ago – and that was something of a surprise, since CBS still had been counting on it as a reliable back-up player when other series had to be pulled and the network needed a ready replacement. The good news is that Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs still can be seen in widely syndicated repeats of the show, the fact that it is so available being a testament to its staying power, even without new episodes being made.

A: Daniel Lissing, the actor who played the part on the Hallmark Channel show, says it was his idea to leave. During a Facebook Live appearance after the development that caught many viewers by surprise, he explained, “Circumstances arose for me where I needed to leave ‘When Calls the Heart’ for reasons that are very personal to me.” He didn’t get more specific than that, but that left the show’s producers only a couple of options ... namely, recasting the role or taking the route they ultimately took. The decision not to recast either could have been a noble move that respected the audience, or the concern that viewers might not accept another actor as Jack this far into the series.

Pressure forges bonds among competitors on ‘Iron Chef America’
As a floor reporter and one-time competitor on Food Network’s “Iron Chef America,” chef Jet Tila is uniquely qualified to relay how it feels to perform in the pressure-packed confines of Kitchen Stadium – and to help the contestants cope.
“Before every show,” the Los Angeles-based chef, restaurateur, consultant and cookbook author says, “I would make it a point to say hello to every chef, every sous chef and just say, ‘Hey, this is who I am. You’re gonna be great. I’ve been here before. Have a good time.’ ... Because the problem is you will worry to the point where you’re not going to focus on your food, because there are so many other things happening at the same time.”
As the venerable competition series returns with the first of 10 episodes on Sunday, May 20, Tila joins host Alton Brown and the Chairman (Marc Dacascos) to comment on the action as up-andcoming chefs square off with elite Iron Chefs in turning secret ingredients into extraordinary creations, with the final products being evaluated by two guest judges.
In Wednesday’s opener, Richmond, Va., chef Brittany Anderson vies with Iron Chef Alex Guarnaschelli, with Antonia Lofaso and Simon Majumdar presiding as judges.
As for his own experience on “Iron Chef America,” Tila recalls his appearance in 2009

competing with and eventually losing to Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto as nerve-wracking. But on the plus side, he says that kind of pressure forges bonds quickly, as did happen between him and his opponent.
“We are all united by what we do,” Tila explains, “but to actually spend time in the arena together brings you actually even closer. And it’s kind of one of those things like, ‘Hey, great battle.’ You exchange your numbers, you exchange emails and then when you visit each other’s businesses, each other’s restaurants. You know I’ve made friends for life.
“Alton and I are very close,” he continues. “We have matching tattoos, for God’s sake. You know, colleagues became really great friends. So I think that’s another fun thing to watch, is the evolution of: You’re my opponent, and then by the end of this hour, you usually end up being my friend and sometimes even better than just a good friend. There are so many layers of this show that are amazing for a chef, hopefully maybe I can help bring that out.”
