The finale countdown: Major networks
bid farewell to stars and series
April showers bring May flowers, but the best gift for TV lovers this May is finale season. As is tradition, networks all across North America prepare to wrap up many of their shows until the fall, among them procedural dramas, competition series, animated shows, family sitcoms and beloved news series.
Of all the spring finale weeks, May 19-25 is the most action-packed, with Sunday night, May 19, saying goodbye to seven TV shows and one longtime judge on ABC’s “American Idol.”
“American Idol” judge and “Roar” singer Katy Perry announced her departure from the long-running singing competition during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” back in February, and now the time has come to bid farewell to the pop diva.
“I love the show so much,” Perry told Jimmy Kimmel, “but I wanna go and see the world and maybe bring new music.”
As for who comes out on top at the end of “American Idol’s” Season 22 finale, no one knows. But there will be one big winner and one fewer judge by the time the credits roll on May 19.
Another long-running series, “60 Minutes,” airs its 56th season finale May 19, on CBS.
Created by Don Hewitt with Bill Leonard (both of “CBS Reports”) in 1968, the news series has become a Sunday night staple for families across the continent. And although it seems likely that the show will return for another season of high-quality interviews and investigative reporting, no official renewal has been issued as of writing.
Also airing their final offerings for the season on Sunday are CBS’s “The Equalizer,” “CSI: Vegas” and “Tracker.” Rounding out the Sunday night finales are the long-reigning animated adult sitcom, “The Simpsons” and its younger counterpart, “Krapopolis,” on Fox.
But, as the work week ramps up, viewers catch a bit of a break. On Monday, May 20, just two Fox series air their final episodes of the season: the cooking show “MasterChef Junior,” showcasing the best up-and-coming young talents in the food world, and the always-astounding and creative dance competition “So You Think You Can Dance.”
Tuesday, May 21, belongs to the Feds, as CBS airs the finales to “FBI” and its two spinoffs, “FBI: International” and “FBI: Most Wanted.” At the same time, on Fox, “The Cleaning Lady” leans into the other side of crime and tidies up its third season with a two-hour finale.
Come Wednesday, May 22, school is out for “Abbott Elementary” (until Season 4), but the focus is on the “Black-ish” spinoff “Grown-ish,” which is closing the door on the Johnson family’s story of growth and newfound adulthood after six seasons on ABC-Disney’s family network, Freeform.
“We’ve spent nearly a decade telling our stories through the ‘-ish’ series, and to say it has been an amazing journey would be an understatement,” said co-creator Kenya Barris (“Black-ish). “To be able to watch ... our entire ‘Grown-ish’ family grow up in front of (and in many ways alongside) us over these past several years has been both a joy and an honor.”
Élodie Yung stars in “The Cleaning Lady”

“McDonald & Dodds” - Season 4 (May 23)
Two detectives with seemingly nothing in common are thrown together. Wildly ambitious DCI McDonald (Tala Gouveia) and the shy DS Dodds (Jason Watkins) forge an unlikely friendship and entertaining, effective partnership as they take on puzzling cases.
“The 1%
Club”
- Season 1 (May 23)
Where the questions have nothing to do with remembering little known facts, endless reams of dates or obscure quiz trivia, this new game show is all about applying logic, reasoning skills and common sense. The show begins with 100 contestants, who are then whittled down as they compete to make it to the end and answer a question only 1% of the country can get right, in hopes of winning up to 100,000 dollars.
“The Kardashians” - Season 5 (May 23)
Mom Kris, along with daughters Kourtney, Kim, Khloé, Kendall and Kylie, tell their stories of love and life in the spotlight, from the pressures of running billion-dollar businesses to the joys of playtime and school drop-offs.
“Sentinel” (May 24)
In 2155, through a multi-dimensional portal, an alien invasion annihilates nearly the entire human race. Some of the people who manage to survive are miners hidden on the dark side of the moon and, years after the invasion, with the use of new technology, three soldiers are sent back to Earth. Upon arrival, the three heroes soon find themselves face to face with the all-powerful guardian of the portal known as the Sentinel and its army.
Where all the top choices can be found in one place!
“Tires” (May 23)
At his father’s auto shop, a hapless manager strives to improve customer service and drive profits while keeping his troublemaking cousin in line. Shane Gillis, Steve Gerben and Chris O’Connor star.
“Mulligan” - Part 2 (May 24)
Allegiances are tested when the grim realities of life on an empty, alien-ravaged planet start to sink in for President Mulligan (Nat Faxon) and his rag-tag band of survivors (no plumbing! No food! Movies are just plays now!). In order to rebuild society they’ll have to overcome feral cub scouts, a cruise ship with a deadly secret, and each other. Dana Carvey, Tina Fey, Phil LaMarr, Sam Richardson, Chrissy Teigen and Ayo Edebiri also voice star.
“Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life” - Season 2 (May 22)
Two tiny troublemakers have huge adventures while trying to live the good life in a big city park. Nervous worrier Chip and laid-back dreamer Dale make the perfect odd couple: they’re best buddies and they drive each other nuts. In their perpetual pursuit of acorns, these ultimate underdogs are joined by Donald Duck, Pluto, Butch and other iconic Disney characters as they face down bullies great and small.
“The Beach Boys” (May 24)
A celebration of the legendary band that revolutionized pop music, and the iconic, harmonious sound they created that personified the California dream, this documentary traces the band from humble family beginnings and features never-before-seen footage and all-new interviews with The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks, Bruce Johnston, plus other luminaries in the music business.

“Eric” (Netflix — May 30, Limited Series Premiere) Set in 1980s New York, this emotional thriller from Abi Morgan follows Vincent (Benedict Cumberbatch), one of New York’s leading puppeteers and the creator of a hugely popular children’s television show, as he struggles to cope with the loss of his son, Edgar (Ivan Morris Howe), after he disappears one morning on the way to school. Full of self-loathing and guilt around Edgar’s disappearance, Vincent clings to his son’s drawings of a blue monster puppet, Eric, convinced that if he can get Eric on TV, then Edgar will come home.
“The game begins with eight strangers who must join forces in order to win the maximum amount of cash available in
“On the flip side,” NBC continues, “the last person left standing is crowned the Strongest Link and gets the total cash prize won by the entire field of contestants. That can be as much as $1 million.”
Emmy winner Jane Lynch (“Glee”) is back to lead this season’s players as the series’ stalwart, acerbic host, leading her quizzical contestants with plenty of biting wit and sarcastic remarks.
“I’m very much looking forward to [more episodes] of mocking contestants and encouraging discord,” Lynch recently claimed, surely hiding more tricks — and tricky questions — up her sleeve.
Returning to the helm of this reboot is showrunner Stuart Krasnow (“The Mediator”), who first brought the American adaptation of this (first-British) show to life back in 2001, then again in 2020, when Lynch joined the team.
Now produced by BBC Studios’ Los Angeles Productions — in association with Universal Television Alternative Studio, a division of Universal Studio Group — “Weakest Link” comes from executive producers Ryan O’Dowd (“Wrestlers”), Aaron Solomon (“BrainSurge”) and Lynch herself.
Test your knowledge and see how you’d fare against the strongest when the “Weakest Link” returns Monday, May 20, on NBC.

Ramsay’s rival: Lisa Vanderpump joins Season 2 of ‘Food Stars’
Ramsay is back on the hunt for the next big name in food, as “Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars” returns for its second season, beginning Wednesday, May 22, on Fox.
An adaptation of the British TV series “Gordon Ramsay’s Future Food Stars,” this Americanized romp follows world-renowned chef Gordon Ramsay (“Hell’s Kitchen”) as he looks to find the next culinary entrepreneur he’d like to personally bankroll. This season, however, Ramsay isn’t taking the task on by himself, as he is joined by superstar entrepreneur Lisa Vanderpump of “Vanderpump Rules” fame, who will surely add a little spice to the competition.
Ramsay’s production company — Studio Ramsay — made an announcement regarding the partnership, stating the following: “Gordon and Lisa will face off as they each select food and beverage industry entrepreneurs to join their teams and then put them through a gauntlet of real-world challenges designed to showcase their business skills, test their drive and prove they have what it takes to become the next great culinary entrepreneur.
“[The duo] will each bring their expert knowledge and unique leadership styles to the competition, and in a first-of-its-kind twist, the entrepreneurs will pitch themselves and their products, services or business ideas to the moguls, who will then choose contestants to build their respective teams. The battle commences as teams are put through ‘Business Bootcamp,’ designed to test their tenacity, initiative, perseverance and ambition as business leaders.
“With a $250,000 prize on the line,” Studio Ramsay continues, “these entrepreneurs will be challenged in all aspects of running a food or beverage enterprise, including remarketing a food product, innovating a

new product, building brand loyalty, sales pitching and management.
“As for Ramsay vs. Vanderpump, the ultimate outcome will be whose mentorship leads to victory for one of their team’s hopefuls,” the statement concludes.
In regards to the upcoming challenge, Ramsay was quoted as saying: “America is full of incredible food and drink entrepreneurs, and I can’t wait to see the talent and ingenuity that we discover.”
From showrunner Deborah Sargeant (“Flirty Dancing”) and executive produced by Ramsay himself, Season 2 of “Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars” begins Wednesday, May 22, on Fox — served with a little “Vanderpump” twist.

BEST ANDY GRIFFITH PROJECTS
“A Face in the Crowd” (1957): Though he would have career longevity via a more wholesome image, Griffith made a huge splash in his screen debut as “Lonesome” Rhodes, who becomes an unlikely media superstar and eventually defines the term “drunk with power.”
“The Andy Griffith Show” (CBS, 1960-68): Well, of course. Griffith became one of America’s most popular TV stars as easygoing Sheriff Andy Taylor of Mayberry, N.C., good boss to Deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts) and great single parent to Opie (Ronny Howard). While it certainly stood on its own, the series was spun off from Danny Thomas’ “Make Room for Daddy.”
“Hearts of the West” (1975): In this wonderful ode to Westerns, Griffith has a choice role as a seen-it-all movie extra who advises a show-business novice (Jeff Bridges).
“Centennial” (NBC, 197879): Just about anyone who was a TV star at the time turned up in the miniseries adaptation of James A. Michener’s epic novel, with Griffith playing a professor who helps put the coda on the saga of a Colorado town.
“Matlock” (NBC/ABC, 1986-95): After some series tries that didn’t work out, Griffith scored his second iconic homescreen role as folksy but canny lawyer Ben Matlock. The show worked so well for NBC that when that network let it go, ABC picked it up for three more seasons; CBS will revive it next season, with Kathy Bates starring.
“Return to Mayberry” (NBC, 1986): There should be little doubt of what this TV movie was. Huge ratings greeted this reunion of many “Andy Griffith Show” alums in their original roles, with the film intended to serve as a finale to the ‘60s series.
“Waitress” (2007): The movie that inspired the hit stage musical features Griffith as the owner of the pie-focused diner where title character Jenna (Keri Russell) works.
