Bountiful butterflies and bookish blooms greet visitors this weekend at the season opening of the Papilion’s Butterfly House.
Papilion Operations Manager Katherine Coburn said Saturday’s season opening will feature a punch and cookies reception, plus children’s activities, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“We’ll have children’s gardening activities and photo opportunities,” Coburn said. She said children could get pictures made with a butterfly costume. There also will be face-painting.
This year’s season opening also could feature a nature hike, she said.
On Sunday, the Papilion celebrates Mother’s Day with free admission for mothers.
WHAT: Season opening of the Papilion Butterfly House.
WHEN: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Coburn said she expects around 300 live butterflies on opening day.

Many butterflies have come form a butterfly farm in Alabama, she said.

Sirens, lights, buckets and rigs all featured in this year’s Touch-A-Truck event

By Cathy Spaulding Phoenix Staff Writer
People disagree on who has the coolest rig at Muskogee Public Library’s annual Touch-A-Truck.
Muskogee Urban Forester Nick Frazee touts the city’s bucket truck, which enables workers to trim high up in trees or put banners on poles.
“This and the firetruck are things that go real high,” Frazee said. “Kids like things that go high.”
However, Muskogee County Emergency Medical Service Special Projects Coordinator Mike McWilliams said youngsters want noise.
“Anything with the siren and the lights, the kids like,” McWilliams said. “They push the button to make the siren go. We can stand it as long as they can.”
Children will have a chance to make their choices when the library presents Touch-A-Truck from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Davis Field
Airport. Proceeds from the $2 admission go toward the library children’s program.
The event was originally scheduled for this Saturday but was changed because of the threat of inclement weather.
Rachele Horney, library head of youth services, said the event brings people up close to a variety of trucks and other vehicles.
“They get a good, close look,” Horney said. “They get to honk the horn,

blast the siren.”
Touch-A-Truck will feature firetrucks, motorcycles, airplanes, tow trucks, garbage haulers, police cars, ambulances, armored police Special Weapons and Tactics vehicles.
“The Castle of Muskogee is letting us see their hearse,” Horney said.
“The kids are in awe that they get to touch them and climb in them,” she said.
Horney said she was surprised at what children thought were cool last year.
“They liked going up and down an elevator ramp for the milk truck,” she said.
She said another popular vehicle was a city truck that could pick up plant debris and load it in a bin.
Frazee called the truck a knuckle boom truck.
Although children are awed by the tall bucket lifter, they won’t be able to go up in the bucket, Frazee said.
However, they will get to watch it go up.
“We want them to come out here and touch it, get the whole experience of

being out here,” he said.
Horney said the event also will feature refreshments. Lowe’s home improvement store will offer crafts for children.
Visitors can ride a trolley as well as touch trucks.
Horney said the Muskogee Trolley will shuttle people from the Muskogee Public Library to Davis Field and back to the library, every hour on the hour.
Last year’s event brought in $8,000 in profit, which the library used for children’s programs, Horney said.

The season opening also will feature literary themed raised flower beds planted by Muskogee Master Gardeners. The gardeners received training through the Muskogee County Cooperative Extension Service.
“This year, the master gardeners did a book theme,” Coburn said. “We have beds on ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ ‘Around the World in 80 Days.’ We have a Colonial garden and a tall grass prairie garden.”
Master Gardener Susie Lawrence helped put “The Wizard of Oz” garden together. She said she put the Emerald City together with green glassware from flea markets.
Master Gardener Trudy Sudberry worked

on a garden based on a novel, “The Language of Flowers.”
“In Victorian times, they used to use flowers to send messages,” Sudberry said.
For example, the dianthus had the message “make haste” and the white rose stood for “eternal devotion,” she said. Sudberry said the white rose is often used on Mother’s Day.
Lela Robison and Karol Watson planted around a massive steamer trunk for their “Around the World in 80 Days” garden.
Watson said the garden features plants from the different places visited in the book: London, Egypt, India, Hawaii, San Francisco and New York.
Coburn said Muskogee Art Guild members painted galvanized metal book covers to go with each raised garden.

It is time to boogie in Tahlequah to the songs of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s performed by the Northeastern State University River City Players.
“I am really excited to be doing three shows that each concentrate on their own decade of music,” said Dr. Robyn Pursley, RCP director.
Pursley said the playlist includes songs the cast has performed in the past as well as songs they never have performed. There is country

strengths as we watch them progress through the eight weeks of shows.”
She said this is important so the next season the strengths of the performers can be highlighted.
“I am really excited about the returning voices we have this year. We also have five of our six band members returning this season,” Pursley said.
Pursley said she chooses the themes of the shows each season based on audience feedback and the strengths of the company of performers.
“We have eight performers, six band members and eight crew. We also have a front of the house team including a house manager and box office staff,” she said.
Pursley said she encourages Muskogee and Cherokee counties residents to take the time to attend a show.
“I am always surprised about how many local resident are unaware of the shows. Every season we have people come through the audience who tell us they have lived in the area for years but never knew about River City,” Pursley said.
She hopes that changes this year.
“We hope to keep finding those new fans and adding them to our fantastic group of returning patrons who support us every season,” Pursley said.

A story can be so big, more than one television project vies to tell it. So it is in the case of Bernie Madoff, the financier and investment adviser whose client-bilking Ponzi scheme – using new investors’ money to pay returns to previous investors – inspired a Richard Dreyfuss-starring ABC miniseries last year. Now, fellow Oscar winner Robert De Niro reteams with his “Wag the Dog” and “Sleepers” director Barry Levinson to give their version of the saga (cowritten by Levinson’s son Sam) as the HBO film “The Wizard of Lies” premieres Saturday, May 20.
Based principally on the Diana B. Henriques book “The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of
Trust,” with added material from Laurie Sandell’s “Truth and Consequences,” the drama also considers the impact of the fraud on Madoff’s family life. Michelle Pfeiffer plays his wife Ruth, with Alessandro Nivola and Nathan Darrow (“House of Cards”) as their sons, Mark and Andrew. Kristen Connolly (also of “House of Cards” as well as “Zoo”), Lily Rabe and Hank Azaria (“Brockmire”) also appear.
“What he did is beyond my comprehension,” De Niro says of Madoff, “There’s a disconnect somehow in him, and I still would like to understand. Some people just ... you can go so far (in playing them). You can do your interpretation. The only thing I do feel strongly about is that he didn’t tell his kids and he didn’t

tell his wife (what he had done), but everyone around him probably had an idea. They just didn’t want to look too deeply, because they knew something wasn’t quite right.”
In making his debut in an HBO movie, De Niro also is an executive producer of “The Wizard of Lies,” as is his longtime production partner Jane Rosenthal.
“We had looked at doing this as a theatrical before we brought it to HBO,” Rosenthal reflects, “and we realized that no studio wanted to make it. We would have had to go the independent-film route, and it was going to be a struggle to get that made. You’d have a much smaller audience seeing it as a theatrical, so as screens are all blurring and the business is so radically

Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer star as Bernie and Ruth Madoff in Saturday’s new HBO movie “The Wizard of Lies.”
Like any good fisherman, Brad Krasowski, captain of the Fish Hawk on National Geographic’s Sunday unscripted series “Wicked Tuna,” started young.
Growing up in the mid-coast New Jersey town of Manasquan, he regularly fished in the Atlantic Ocean for whatever the bite was, be it tuna, sea bass, porgy or bluefish. In his teens, he traveled up and down the East Coast in pursuit of the big ones, which brought him into the same circles as the man who would become his lifelong friend, boss, employee and ultimately “Wicked Tuna” rival, Paul Hebert.
In school, he’d hide his fishing books under his schoolwork so he could read up on the tendencies of the various species in class and not get caught by the teacher. He’s owned fishing boats his entire life, and yes, he does eat his own catch – a breakfast of raw tuna on his boat is not uncommon.
To say he’s a student of the sport might be an understatement.
BY GEORGE DICKIE
“I just think over the years, ever since I was a little kid,” he says, “I’ve always thought about and studied and fished for every little fish under the sun, whether it’s a trout or a snapper or a bonita. And that’s all I ever really wanted to do, is catch fish and it’s just natural to me. ... It’s a naturalborn, innate ability.”
changing, this was the best place to make the film and to ensure that we would have an amazing audience for it.”
Also an Oscar recipient for his direction of “Rain Man,” Levinson (a “Wizard of Lies” executive producer as well) readily embraced working with De Niro again.
“Step by step, very slowly, this character begins to emerge,” the filmmaker notes of the actor’s process. “It’s somehow over that period of time of talking and going over things, it just keeps evolving. And then there’s that day when all of a sudden, there’s the character he’s going to play. I’m fascinated, every time, to see that inch-byinch transformation that takes place.”
And he’s constantly amazed by the tuna’s ability to change and adapt. One day, he could be throwing out blocks of wood and the tuna will bite; on others, even the nicest piece of mackerel or herring won’t draw a strike.
“There’s always something new and that’s the fun part to me,” he says. “... Whether I caught a lot of fish that season or not that many fish that season, I can always remember saying, ‘Jesus, who woulda thought that?’ ”
Name: Brad Thomas Krasowski
Birth date: Sept. 20, 1969
Birthplace: Asbury Park, N.J.
Family: He and wife Heather are the parents of Emma and Brad
Largest tuna caught: “The largest tuna I’ve ever caught was one I got about five miles off Asbury Park, N.J., and it was 920 pounds dressed. The scale only went to 999, so it was over 1,000 pounds.”
Favorite fish to eat: “I love tuna more than anything. ... Swordfish is one of my favorite fish, too, but I really like all fish. I like blue crabs, lobster, shellfish, every kind of steamer clam, littlenecks, topnecks, stuffed clams – everything. If I had my choice to eat anything the rest of my life, it would be seafood for every meal.”

If Asian travel, culture and food turn you on, a series of videos recently produced by David and Andrew Fung on their YouTube channel might be of interest.
On the channel simply known as “Fung Bros.,” the Seattle natives, stand-up comics and certified foodies hit the road in the world’s largest continent to take in the culture, meet the locals and spotlight the cuisine that they say you cannot get anywhere else in the world.
One look at their channel reveals some pretty varied and interesting eats, from a high-end Vietnamese grill house in Hong Kong and a night market crawl in Taipei to bento at a train station in Japan and Cantonese street food in the Chinese city of Guangzhou.
And then there was Andrew’s favorite, the guo kui in Chengdu, China.
“It’s kind of like a Hot Pocket,” he explains. “It was freshly made. You would wrap it up in dough and then you stick it on the side of what looks like a pot of it, where they make naan (a flatbread). Because there were a lot of different influences in China. I don’t know, maybe it came from India originally, that style of cooking. But basically it sticks on the side of the pot and it just rises and gets toasted and then there’s like meat inside that’s kind of spicy. I’ve never really had anything like that before. It was just really good.”
Like Anthony Bourdain and others before them, the Fung brothers believe that food is a way of bridging cultures and a means of enabling people of different backgrounds to find common ground over a meal.
“Being able to talk about culture through food,” Andrew Fung says, “is a really good way to introduce the idea of different cultures because everybody has to eat food, everybody likes food, and that’s usually the first thing that people share with each other nowadays, is like, ‘Oh hey, I’m from like this part of the world ... and this is what they eat. Wow, this is cool. I like this food.’ So then it kind of goes from there.”

What book are you currently reading?
“A book that we recently just got was ‘Double Cup Love’ by Eddie Wong. It’s his second book following ‘Fresh Off the Boat.’ I also read ‘Modern Romance’ by Aziz Ansari. And then any book by Malcolm Gladwell is pretty cool. ... And Obama’s book ‘Dreams of My Father’ and ‘The Audacity of Hope.’ ”
What did you have for dinner last night?
“Late night, I actually had In-N-Out burgers after the gym, protein style. But for dinner before that, we ate at this spot called Sun Nong Dan. It’s a Korean stew spot. ... This is like more traditional. It’s just about stews, beef stews, the short rib stews. It’s not just spicy. ... It’s called seolleongtang.”
What is your next project?
“We’re making some changes to our YouTube channel but in that we are filming some short films. We did this ‘Get Out’ parody, which is the Asian version. That was fun. And then we also did a short film that we shot around L.A. and we used random people in the street ... and we just asked them to be in our movie and play a quick role. So it was like a fun way of making a movie.”

Aaron Stanford
With
binge-watching becoming the preferred mode of consumption for many fans of TV series these days, Syfy comes forth with a unique programming strategy for one of its mainstays that’s designed to satisfy that crowd.
“12 Monkeys,” the time-travel thriller starring Aaron Stanford, Amanda Schull and Emily Hampshire, will roll out all 10 episodes of its third season over three nights, starting with four on Friday, May 19, followed by three apiece on Saturday and Sunday, May 20 and 21. The idea is to give viewers who are used to the streaming model of releasing an entire season at once, a la Netflix and Amazon, the opportunity to follow a storyline arc with as little interruption as possible.

As Season 2 drew to a close last summer, Cole was setting off for the year 2163 to find the love of his life, Dr. Cassandra “Cassie” Railly (Schull), unaware she is pregnant with his child. It turns out, too, that child isn’t just any child. He will grow up to be the Witness, the man responsible for the plague that has devastated humanity.
So as Season 3 opens, needless to say, Cole isn’t in a great head space.

“Anne With an E,” www.netflix.com/title/80136311
Netflix takes a stab at Lucy Maud Montgomery’s oft-told story “Anne of Green Gables” with this series that drops Friday and stars Irish-Canadian actress Amybeth McNulty in the title role of the orphan whose plucky spirit wins over her adopted family and the community in her 1890s Prince Edward Island, Canada, town. Geraldine James and R.H. Thomson also star.

“I think it’s a very cool idea,” says Stanford, who plays James Cole, a scavenger sent back in time to eradicate a devastating plague. “... That’s how I watch my shows. You know, one episode is rarely enough or you usually want to jump to the next one, and that’s especially true with a show like this, where each episode ends with like a huge cliffhanger and you’re just absolutely dying to know what comes next. So I think that’s going to work out very well for us and I think the fans are really going to like it.”

“Unsupervised,” www.youtube.com/ watch?vBNIUD9f4Szk
Boutique music supervision company Groove Guild comes forth with this new video series that shines a spotlight on genre-diverse emerging artists through live sessions and insightful interviews. Filmed inside a New York City building that was once home to the legendary Skyline recording studio, the series kicks off with Glassnote recording artist and songwriter Aurora.
“We come back into the story when Cole is in a very, very desperate place,” Stanford says. “You know, he’s lost the woman he loves, the only thing he’s ever cared about in his life. So yeah, he’s getting set to begin that sort of one-track mission to find her. So when we come back into the story, he’s unhinged, a lot of sleepless nights and he’s been scouring the ends of the Earth to find her.”
As to whether Cole has it in him to kill his child to save humanity, if that’s what is necessary, Stanford was understandably reluctant to answer, lest he give away any spoilers. But he would allow that “many characters, Cole included, their resolve and their commitment to the mission will be tested, and they will have to see how far they’re willing to go to achieve their ends.”

“Get Me Roger Stone,” www.netflix.com/title/80114666
Though Donald Trump’s election as the 45th president came as a surprise to just about everyone, one man who wasn’t shocked was his long-time friend, confidant and adviser Roger Stone. This documentary profiles the veteran political operative and his influence on the history of the Republican Party and, indeed, the nation from the 1970s and Watergate through the present. Drops Friday.

Jamie McMurray is not exactly one of NASCAR’s dominant drivers, but he’s competitive just the same. Perhaps coming to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Monster Energy Cup Series NASCAR All-Star Race, which airs Saturday, May 20 on Fox Sports 1, will change his luck. At press time McMurray has yet to win a race this season and hasn’t won a points race since 2010. But he has had some luck at Charlotte over the years.
In the fall of 2002 McMurray won his first race at Charlotte, becoming at the time the quickest driver to earn his first victory. A year later, in 2003, he would be honored as NASCAR’s Rookie of the Year. But the wins came sparingly after that. Of his seven Cup wins two have come at Daytona, including the Daytona 500 in 2010, which was his best season. That year he joined Jimmie Johnson and Dale Jarrett as being the only drivers to win the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 (at Indianapolis) in the same season. He also won the Bank of America 500 for the second time that year at Charlotte.
Since then it’s been all non-points wins for McMurray and again, Charlotte was his good luck charm. He won the Sprint Cup Showdown in 2013 and then took the All-Star race in 2014; both at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Although he’s been consistent enough to finish both the 2015 and 2016 seasons ranked 13th, McMurray would surely like to find Victory Lane again soon. Perhaps a rabbit’s foot in his pocket at Charlotte the next few weeks will help.

Brand new episodes of “Twin Peaks” will grace TV screens once again, thanks to its revival on Showtime.
In the modern landscape, riddled with spoilers, cocreator David Lynch has somehow managed to keep a veil of secrecy around the new season, and the stories he plans to tell. And given that he’s directing each of the 18 new episodes, and the return of most of the original cast, there’s a lot to be excited about.
One of those cast members, Madchen Amick, graced Screener with a visit recently to talk about returning to her role of Shelly Johnson – waitress at the Double R Diner – and she’s already saying all the right things about the show’s return, 25 years after it first ended on ABC.
“It was absolutely mind-blowing to go back. Really, to be honest, just mind-blowing hearing we were coming back,” she says. “I never thought we would... How could you ever do that again? My thinking was, it was hard enough to have ‘Twin Peaks’ on network television back when it was!”
Amick isn’t wrong. In the early 1990’s, viewers were far from even imagining Peak TV – and many still find it surprising that a series as surreal and offthe-wall as “Twin Peaks” found the audience it did. In the years since, it’s gained an even bigger cult following – thanks especially to its arrival on Netflix several years ago, when a whole new generation discovered it for themselves – and now that high-concept TV is pretty much the norm, it’s the perfect time to return.
Of course, returning on a premium cable network like Showtime helps. “(There are) no boundaries that David Lynch has to live within,” she says of the show’s new home. “They’ll embrace anything and everything, (wherever) he takes us.”
And wherever Lynch does happen to take them –the actress herself is as secretive about the plot as the creator – the opportunity to go back to “Twin Peaks” is a nice full-circle moment for Amick, who also currently stars on The CW’s “Peaks”-tinged “Riverdale” as Betty Cooper’s mom Alice.
“Going back on set, getting back into Shelly’s waitress uniform, seeing my initials in the same uniform I wore 25 years ago, was so moving and touching. I fought tears the whole time I was filming, because it was an amazing experience back in the day,” she remembers.
“I was fresh to Hollywood – a 16-year-old girl from Reno, Nevada that had stars in her eyes. My first real experience was working with David Lynch.”
When the show – and that experience – came to an end, Amick had to confront the fact that Lynch, and her experience, are unique.
“It was a blessing – but it was also a curse, because he showed me a way that you can be creative, and that you can tell a story, at such a high level ... And then I went from the ‘Twin Peaks’ experience into the real world – the big, bad world of show business – where you’re constantly hit with, ‘No, we can’t do that. Oh no, there’s no way. The audience won’t understand that ...’ ”
According to Amick, it took five years of the entertainment industry trying to put her in the “perfect category or box” to fully appreciate what working with a mind like Lynch’s was like: “I kept saying, ‘Well ... Yeah, you can. I’ve done it, and it works.’ ”
Now, 28 years after her first credited appearance – an episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” in which she played the role of Teenage Girl Anya – reuniting with Lynch and her “Twin Peaks” cast proved to the actress “How special (David) is, and how special a set he creates.”
“There’s so much flow of energy. Every single person on set is valued and every single one of them is invited into the creative process,” Amick says. “It’s this really beautiful environment that, now that I’ve worked in the business, I appreciate it even more for how unique and special it was.”
“Twin Peaks” returns Sunday, May 21, on Showtime.
