There’s new danger for a new Will Robinson, and for his fellow travelers, too.
Previously reintroduced by a 1998 movie, one of television’s iconic sci-fi series gets a fresh reboot as Netflix’s version of the Irwin Allen-created “Lost in Space” premieres a full season of 10 episodes Friday, April 13. Toby Stephens (“Black Sails”) and Molly Parker (“House of Cards”) now star as John and Maureen Robinson, the couple who embark with children Judy, Penny and Will (Taylor Russell, Mina Sundwall, Max Jenkins) on an intergalactic trip to a new colony.
However, their trek aboard the Jupiter 2 goes off course – literally – leaving them stranded on an unknown planet. Also on the journey: Don West (Ignacio Serricchio), who isn’t exactly a willing passenger in this case; the devious Dr. Smith, now a villainess as played by Parker Posey; and, of course, Robot ... who isn’t entirely friendly in his present form.
“I’m sure I had seen the (original) show at some point,” co-star Parker says of the 1965-68 CBS edition, “but when I was growing up in Canada, we had, like, two channels until I was 12 or so. I ended up watching a lot of it while we were shooting this with my 11-year-old son, whose name also is Will, as it happens. I really loved it, but it was new to me.”
So is the bounty of special-effects work required of Parker, whose career largely has involved independent movies (“Waking the Dead,” “Wonderland,” etc.) with decidedly smaller budgets than “Lost in Space.” She notes that her new on-screen “husband” gave her a major assist.
“I’ve hardly done any ‘green screen’ work, or work on shows where there are a lot of physical sets, so it’s a new experience ... which is wonderful. Having come off ‘Black Sails,’ Toby was so helpful to me at the beginning. Sometimes, you’re walking across this spaceship like it’s supposed to be on its side, or fighting crazy aliens. I was like, ‘I don’t know how to do this!,’ but Toby just encouraged me to throw myself into it 100 percent. And there’s such joy in that.”
While Parker says she “loved what June Lockhart did” as the original Maureen, “because this is decades later, we wanted to present a modern idea of family and a modern representation of women. The Maureen Robinson of our show is brilliant; she’s an aerospace engineer, and she’s also the matriarch of this family. When the producers first talked to me about the show, they approached it as Maureen essentially being a heroine. They really wanted to hold onto the essence of the original, which was fun and suspenseful, but in a new way.”

Q:
What are your thoughts about your run on “New Girl” as it begins its seventh and final season?
A: More than anything, personally, it’s such a treat to get to work with amazing people for seven years. That is so rare. And all of my professional experiences had been limited to the (filming duration) of a movie. It had been a lot of different movies, but no more than probably six months at a time. I’ve gotten to work with all of these people through so many life changes and watching everyone grow as people and as actors and as writers. I’ve gotten to know everyone so well. It’s kind of like high school, but longer. And I love everyone so much.
I feel so fortunate that I was able to be there at the beginning and help with the casting process and meet every single one of these actors when they came in, and I read with everyone. I feel this sense of camaraderie that I’ve never felt before, and that I don’t know if I’ll ever have again. I can’t say enough positive things about this experience. We just had such an amazing group of people that we got to work with every day, and I will forever miss that working experience.
Q: Do you remember the reaction to your being the lead in the show when it premiered?
A: (People were like,) “A woman! There’s a woman in it! We can’t believe it!” And then, they were like, “Other shows with women? There are three shows that have women characters.” It was like, “I cannot believe this trend. Three shows this year have women in them.”

CONTEMPT’ ON BET
Q: Is it fun saying the things your outspoken public defender character gets away with in BET’s “In Contempt”?
A: Yeah. I think that might be the through line of my career, is that I don’t play a quiet character. I play those characters that say the things that need to be said. And, yes, it is a lot of fun because in my real life, believe it or not, I do have boundaries and scruples when it comes to speaking to people. And so sometimes I’ll pretend like I’m in character in my real life and say the things that need to be said, and blame it on prep work.
Q: In researching your role, did you fall back on other TV legal dramas for reference?
A: I have to say that I normally don’t like to watch other shows similar to mine when I’m preparing for it, because I don’t want to adopt that. And as an Army brat, that’s just something that I naturally gravitate towards. So I try to steer clear of that.
I will say this, the choices that my character had to make in this show weren’t always the popular choice. And sometimes the things she had to do on behalf of her client, made me take pause and wonder, do I like her? Am I going to root for her in this episode? And it frightened me, because it’s making the decision to tell the truth, regardless of how it comes across.

Q: Where did you start your research to play Gail Getty in “Trust”?
A: I sat down with (the producers) in London and they gave me a couple of books and I started reading them and digging in. I like to do research like Donald (Sutherland, who plays J. Paul Getty) does, just diving into the people. But really, Simon (Beaufoy) wrote such rich characters. Every character was so fleshed-out.
The beauty of television, I think – and I’ve made a career of doing so many movies – is that everything gets revealed as you go, and that’s so human. It’s so hard to tell a story in two hours, I’m coming to recognize more than ever now. And the idea of having such trust in the people that you’re working with, knowing that they’re going to write something that you’re going to be so
happy to be a part of, that’s going to challenge you and bring all of the things you want as an actor ... we’re just like an audience member. We’re waiting for the next episodes to come.
Q: What do you think of Gail Getty’s place in “Trust,” having been the mother of a kidnap victim who had to engineer the rescue?
A: She’s really the emotional anchor. I don’t have children, so my ability to empathize with this probably was only scratching the surface of what it feels like, but I have a pretty great understanding that it’s your child. And the idea of your child being in any type of harm has to be the most devastating thing ever. To wake up and not knowing if they’re alive, it’s all-consuming, and rightfully so. Everything is focused on saving your child.

Christina Tosi talks baking and inspiration on Netflix’s
‘Chef’s Table’
The world of culinary professionals, according to Christina Tosi, is divided into two parts: those who can comfortably follow a recipe to a T and those who can’t.
“If it calms you and chills you out, you’re a baker,” she says. “If it stresses you out, you’re a cook.”
Tosi, a dyed-in-the-wool baker since childhood, is the first of four chefs profiled in the fourth season of “Chef’s Table” subtitled “Pastry,” which begins streaming Friday, April 13, on Netflix. The hourlong episode captures Tosi at home, with her family in Ohio and Virginia and at her Manhattan dessert restaurant Momofuku Milk Bar as she talks about her life, career, baking and what inspires her.
And like any good artist, Tosi – who is also a cohost on Fox’s “MasterChef: Junior Edition” – gets inspirations in the unlikeliest of places, her biggest being the aisles of a grocery store. And she finds she is at her best when she is inspired, such as when she created one of her signature desserts shown in the episode, crack pie.
Here, she describes how she got in the kitchen, began putting together ingredients and being blown away by what she calls the “magic” that resulted.

The problem came when she realized she failed to document the process.
“I’m the best kind of baker and the worst kind of baker,” Tosi says with a laugh, “and I say that because I am such a rule follower. I was raised to be a rule follower, and I am a crazy person when it comes to following recipes to a gem scale hundredth of a gram.
“But when I am in my innovating mode,” she continues, “the only way I know how to innovate is to throw caution to the wind and to break every rule. So everything – I’m talking compost cookie, crack pie ... all of these recipes are recipes that are just me being like, ‘Alright, I’m gonna add a little of this and then taste it. OK, I’m gonna add a little of that and then taste it.’
“It is a very savory chef approach to baking when I am like ... making magic in the kitchen,” she says. “And when I make something that then tastes really great, I’m like, ‘S...! Now I’ve got to go back and pick apart exactly what I did.’ ... I need a Go Pro, basically, hiding in my kitchen so that the picking it back apart is less daunting than it is currently.”
