Marine Corps lawyers enforce ‘The Code’ in new CBS drama

CBS wisely is using a militar ycrime drama – one of the most popular series around the world – to help launch another militar ycrime drama.

Premiering after “NCIS” on Tuesday, April 9, “ The Code” revolves around U.S. Marine Corps lawyers and officers in the Judge Advocate Division, where their cases range from treason to murder Twotime Emmy winner Dana Delany plays the colonel in charge, with Anna Wood (“Reckless”), Luke Mitchell (“Blindspot”), “Hamilton” Tony Award nominee Phillipa Soo, Ato Essandoh (“Chicago Med”) and Raffi Barsoumian (“ The Vampire Diaries”) also in the ensemble cast.

Moving to Mondays after it debuts, “ The Code” lets Delany use her experience from the militar ythemed “China Beach” only to a certain degree. “ There’s a big difference between the Army and the Marines,” the actress notes, “and they will let you know that. They’re very territorial about their different divisions.

“Also, I played a nurse in ‘China Beach’ and I’m a lawyer in this show and to me, those are very different functions. A nurse is all about empathy, and a lawyer has to be about strategy. There are a few books by female Marines; I read ‘Hesitation Kills’ by Lt. Jane Blair and ‘Fight Like a Girl’ by Kate Germano, who was a lieutenant colonel in the Marines for 20 years. And one of our writers is the guy who wrote ‘Jarhead,’ Anthony Swofford, so he’s been a great source. ”

Another reference for Delany in prepping for “ The Code” was a woman who had been a judge advocate in California: “She stepped down because she had young kids. To be a woman in this position, and to last as long in it as my character Col. Turnbull has, is something very rare for somebody my age. She would have started when she was in her 20s, and to deal with sexism then and advance through the ranks, she had to be pretty strong. ”

From BAFTA-winning writer Sally Wainwright comes this eightepisode drama based on a true story about Anne Lister (Suranne Jones), a charismatic 1832 English landowner who is determined to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home by reopening the local coal mines. As an unconventional woman who bucks society at every turn, she searches for a wife as part of her revitalization plan. Sophie Rundle, Timothy West and Gemma Jones also star.

When you’re working with these very exotic animals that they don’t teach you about in veterinary school, how do you know what you’re doing?

You know, a lot of animals that I work with, we don’t know a lot about in general, and so a lot of it is extrapolating from animals we do know about. And so the key to that is knowing and learning as much as you can about dogs

and cats, and even some of the exotics we might know more about, and then applying that to some of these other species. So when I was working with whales I was doing more conser vation research work than veterinar y work. So we were actually collecting skin samples But to answer your question, I do the research that I can, and if it’s something we don’t know much about, then I do my best to find the next closest species and then apply what I know to that.

Are there any animals that made you nervous?

To be honest, no, there’s not an animal or a species or group of animals that I’m uncomfor table working with. You know, it really depends on the individual. That’s what it comes down to. And so you have to feel each individual animal out. And some members of a species might be more attractable or more engaging and some might be more shy or ner vous or fear ful or dangerous. So ever y animal I approach with respect and caution and I listen to what they say I look at their body language and then play of f that. And if things look like they’re approachable and they’re curious and we might have a nice little engagement, then we’ll move fur ther and I just move at their pace and follow their lead.

Q: I know Brie Larson has an Oscar and big movie hit now with “Captain America,” but I’m pretty sure I used to watch her TV series. Am I right? – Heather Lyons, e-mail

A: Yes, if you watched some specific shows. She one of Bob Saget’s daughters (as did Kat Dennings, of “2 Broke Girls”) on “Raising Dad” during the 02 season, then she appeared with Toni Collette 2009-11 Showtime program “United States of Tara.” Additionally, Larson made a couple of appearances “The League” in 2011 while it still was on FX (before moved to sister network FXX), and she had a recurring role on “Community” during the last two of that NBC seasons in 2013-14.

Q: Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo good working relationship as Tony and she’ll appear on his show “Bull”?

A: Well, there’s a chance of almost anything in life. this point is whether CBS will renew “Bull” for a fourth season – which had not happened as of the time of this writing – since that would determine whether there’s a possibility of that reunion on that series. Production on the current Season 3 either is nearing completion or fully completed. Also, it does bear mention that the two actors already have been working together again, as producers on a a Miami-set crime-show project they’ve been developing for CBS.

The Pink Teacup invades South Beach in Season 3 of WE’s ‘Hustle & Soul’

Conventional wisdom has it that a chef can’t cook and manage their own restaurant at the same time if they want to have a healthy personal life – or even health. There just isn’t the time and those who know say it’s the express route to burnout.

Which is why in Season 3 of “Hustle & Soul,” now airing Thursdays on WE tv, chef Lawrence Page has tasked fiancee Ana Lavender with opening the new Atlanta location of his restaurant The Pink Teacup, while he concerns himself with the opening in Miami Beach.

“I really wanted to teach her how to deal with the restaurant business one on one ...,” Page explains. “I think that’s been the biggest challenge for me this year fighting and arguing with her and trying to really teach her how to become an owner instead of an employer or a fiancee. And I think that’s very hard because she takes things a lot more personally than I would take it. And I think that’s the biggest challenge, trying to get her on that right path so she can open up Atlanta and make sure that restaurant runs well without fighting and arguing with the staff.”

Ah yes, staff infighting – a popular pastime at the Teacup over the series’ first two seasons and one that has gained Page much experience as a referee. This season, the Alabama-born chef and restaurateur will endeavor to elevate soul food’s culinary status at the new South Beach location while entertaining celebrity clientele and dealing with the usual problems of managing people. Back in Brooklyn, Thandi is running the original restaurant while harboring a secret that concerns

Lawrence. And of course, there is the Atlanta opening and Ana’s adventures there.

Running two restaurants, Page says, has matured him and sharpened his managerial and social skills in innumerable ways. Probably the most difficult part of running a business, he has found, is managing people and he looks forward to showing how much he has grown in that area in the new season.

“I went pretty much from a six to a 10,” he says, “and really trying to keep everybody calm and teach people how to work together in a hospitality business as opposed to just letting them rip each other apart over differences. And that’s one of the main things that I fight real hard for in the hospitality business, is to teach the people that work with me, look, there are other ways to get your point across than arguing and fighting. Because you deal with so much already before you go to work, so this is the last place you want to come to and really have that drama, have that hostility built up in you around people you have to work with 13 hours a day.”
