James Cameron does a deep dive into a popular genre in AMC’s ‘Story of Science Fiction’

Talk to James Cameron and one comes away with the sense that this is a man who has truly lived life, thought deeply about it and turned it into stories and films.

The humanity he brings to the nonhuman characters in productions such as “Avatar,” “The Abyss” and the “Terminator” and “Alien” movies makes them seem more human than actual people in others’ films and has helped make science fiction increasingly accessible to a wider audience.

As one of its leading practitioners these days, Cameron is passionate about sci-fi and and evercurious about how others in his position approach it, which he brings to his new documentary series “James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction,” premiering Monday, April 30, on AMC.

In the six hourlong episodes, the Oscar-winning filmmaker looks at the origins of a genre that has become a cornerstone of popular culture, exploring its roots, futuristic vision and our fascination with it through conversations with contemporaries such as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ridley Scott, Christopher Nolan and Guillermo del Toro, among other series participants, and considering where it might be headed next.

“I think if there was a common thread,” Cameron says of the filmmakers, “it was unfettered. Any image that they could imagine, they could create a story that could support that image. And for Steven, it was looking at the night

sky as a kid and having seen a UFO ... and then never getting that out of his mind and always wanted to express something about that, about his sense of awe and wonder about the greater mystery of the universe. That’s what drove him to make ‘Close Encounters,’ which was very personal. ... Guillermo tells similar stories. George Lucas tells similar stories.

“So I mean, we’re all just storytellers,” he continues. “Science fiction writers are always taking something that’s their particular bee in their bonnet – whether it’s about the nature of society or lack of inclusiveness or gender issues, racial issues, whatever – and putting it through the lens of an alternate society or an alternate future, so you can make a point without pushing people’s specific buttons and alienating them. So people come to it from all sorts of different directions. Some have social axes to grind, some are just starry-eyed, filled with wonder like Arthur Clarke.” In the series opener titled “Aliens,” Cameron and Lucas discuss their inspirations for their alien characters. Their answer in unison? “Go to the aquarium.”

“I always say all the aliens are right here,” Cameron says. “You know, they might be just very small or very deep or inaccessible but we could fuel a thousand years of science fiction, aliens and monsters with the stuff that exists right here already on Earth if we just know where to look.”

How long did it take you to develop the maniacal laugh of the Joker for “Gotham”?

It didn’t come all that quickly. In the first season of “Gotham,” I was told I was going to be filming that before the show went on a Christmas hiatus, so I had about five weeks from the time I was told to the time I was going to film that episode where I could really work on it. And I just sort of stayed at home and ordered in and ran the scene over and over and over to an absolutely obsessive level and worked on it and was a complete crazy person. I stared at myself in the mirror and did the laugh over and over until I found something that I liked.

And from there, it continued to shift and the voice and the performance kind of changes each year. And that’s sort of a purposeful thing, as I wanted to make sure that the character felt like he was going through an evolution. So this year, the laugh is different and the voice is different enough so there’s another reinvention on top of that and that’s also different. So it’s kind of constantly changing things but yeah, it’s something that is bred through repetition and practice like anything should be, right?

Did anyone happen to overhear you while you were working on the laugh and wonder what was going on?

I’m sure that my neighbors were very, very concerned. (laughs)

There were stories circulating not long ago about your former Amazon series “Good Girls Revolt” being revived. Had you heard anything about that?

You know, I heard that, too, and I actually reached out to Dana Calvo, who created it, and offered her my assistance to get it to happen, and she’s informed me unfortunately that it’s officially 100 percent dead in the water. I think “Good Girls Revolt” suffered from too-early-itis,

As you headline “Live From Lincoln Center: Stephanie J. Block in Concert,” how does it feel to be at this point, having built a theater career in such shows as “Wicked” and “Falsettos”?

You know, it feels good to be on the list of gals that are recognized on Broadway. I feel very proud that no, you can’t define me as a star, but I’ve been around long enough and hopefully have made a career on Broadway. As an actor, I have auditioned for the big mega-musicals, and I feel that there is a place for all of that on Broadway. I think our art form allows people to be transported to somewhere where they don’t have to think, and it’s pure entertainment.

And then there are pieces like “Falsettos,” which (had) a limited run. It’s going to be a more theatrically minded audience that wants to listen to every word of the score and be present and be engaged ... and hopefully walk away discussing with the person they come to the theater with a whole crap-load of issues.

You’ve been cast as the music icon in the forthcoming “The Cher Show” on Broadway. What do you think of the system

you know? We were one season too soon. If we had premiered this year, I think that show would have been a massive hit.

It’s too bad they don’t try to promote it now.

They tried. They had some pitch meetings. I think they went to Freeform and I think they went to ABC. I think they went to a few places. I think they went to Amazon. Now, I’m not positive about this, but I do believe metrics has come into play, not so much viewership metrics but how much it cost to produce a period show like that. So yeah, I was quite disappointed about that as well.

I had a terrific time on that show. I mean, look, that was me getting a chance to live out my Jason Robards fantasy. So Bryan Cranston to me is the modern-day Jason Robards, he’s the Darren McGavin. You know, I did “A Christmas Story Live” and I was playing Darren McGavin’s role in this thing on Fox and I called Bryan. I was like, “This should be you, not me! This is you, man.” (laughs). So “Good Girls Revolt” was a real opportunity for me to step into an era that I’m just obsessed with. I love the ’60s.

You had a great losing-it scene in one of the latter episodes.

Oh, thank you very much. It was fun – fun to throw a typewriter through a plate glass window.

by which others with more name recognition often land starring roles in the theater?

As an actor, it’s always hard to digest the business part of show business. What leads us to this art form is our heart, rather than a lot of (times) our head. Any time I look back, I know exactly why that (thing) happened in my life, why that decision had to be made, why that wasn’t going to work for me.

“Wicked” was a tough sting. I won’t even mince words. I invested about two years creating Elphaba with (the show’s creators) Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, and it was really basic: It was, “You do not have a Broadway credit to your name, let alone creating something of this magnitude with Universal Pictures behind it, and this sort of production value and price tag.” And, “We’d love you to stand by for Idina.” Idina Menzel, at that point, had been nominated for a Tony and had been in the original company of several Broadway casts, and that’s the way it was. So, it’s going to hurt, sure. When she’s standing up there with a Tony, you go, “Oh, drat, that should have been me.” And I got drunk. That stuff happens. But, you know, you wake up the next morning and you figure out what the next audition is.

If you’re an oenophile and you haven’t already found it, “The Wine Show” may be worth an hour of your time.

Airing Wednesdays on Ovation, the lifestyle/ documentary series takes viewers on an entertaining and informative walk-through of all things related to wine – from locations and history to gadgets and the wines themselves – guided by the affable hosts, actors Matthew Rhys (“The Americans,” “Brothers and Sisters”) and Matthew Goode (“The Crown,” “Downton Abbey”), as well as resident wine experts Joe Fattorini and Amelia Singer.

Along the way, they visit worldwide locations such as Chile, to see how the winemaking industry has fared since a devastating 2010 earthquake; Shanghai, to check out its emerging wine culture; the Burgundy region of France, for a wine auction; and the Mornington Peninsula of Australia, home to a plethora of vineyards and wineries.

In this week’s episode, Rhys and Goode head to Rome to sample Roman wine recipes.

“In Rome, we centered on history and one of those elements being ancient Roman wine,” Rhys explains, “and what they used to do or how they drank it, how they preserved it, what accompanied it, which you’d need a cast-iron stomach to kind of live and quaff in ancient Roman times. It was a tough test.”

“Tough” is a relative term in a series such as this, where there is lots of sipping of great wine in breathtaking locations. But that isn’t all this is about. There is also plenty of useful information on wine gadgets, winemaking and other minutia to be had and, as one would expect, discussion of the wines themselves.

And there is also the light-hearted touch of the hosts, Rhys and Goode, two long-time friends whose rapport and mischievous sense of humor are apparent as they kid with each other, Fattorini and Singer, and make funny asides to the camera. Like the viewer, both actors are on a journey of discovery about wine. As Rhys says, “We enjoy vast quantities of it but know nothing about it.”

“This is fun for us,” Rhys adds with a laugh. “It’s a tough one to sell to the family when you’re saying I’m going to go to a country for a month and drink wine. ... It’s never a great conversation when you’re calling home saying I’ve been drinking wine all day in an Italian villa.”
