Love
at 40: Hathaway, Galitzine get romantic in ‘The Idea of You’
There is something about a romantic comedy that uplifts the viewer like nothing else. Traditionally chronicling a quirky love story between two or more people, the genre often requires its audience to suspend disbelief just enough to open their hearts and allow for a bit of movie magic. Thankfully, as spring heats up and prepares to head into summer, Prime Video has a new rom-com to suit the seasonal mood.
“The Idea of You,” premiering Thursday, May 2, on Prime, puts just enough of a twist on the rom-com genre to leave moviegoers feeling fresh this spring. Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by actress and author Robinne Lee (“Fifty Shades Freed,” 2018), “The Idea of You” stars Anne Hathaway (“Interstellar,” 2014) as 40-something French-American single mother Solène, who hits it off with 24-year-old pop star Hayes Campbell, played by “Cinderella’s” (2021) Nicholas Galitzine, when she accidentally walks into his trailer while accompanying her teen daughter to Coachella.
While, at surface level, the book (and its subsequent film) may appear to be a simple rom-com featuring a so-called “May-December romance,” in 2020, Vogue called the then three-year-old novel a “socio-cultural commentary about aging and a woman’s worth.”
“I wanted to write a novel that challenged certain myths,” Lee said in a 2017 interview. “[The myths] that female sexuality ceases to exist after we hit middle age; that having kids makes us no longer sexually attractive or viable; that women at a certain point in their lives — the point where they should be at their strongest and most prolific — become invisible.”
And after spending what is now more than a quarter-century in Hollywood herself, Lee says she feels much of that pressure herself, adding in a later interview with Vogue that sometimes “you want to just live the way you’ve lived when you were in college, or your early twenties when you have freedom and you never have to think of anyone but yourself.”
Solène definitely has a certain element of the carefree about her, but that side of Hathaway’s character plays counterpoint to a very grounded, much more mature sense of duty brought on by being a single mom and high-powered working woman in the art world. Although Solène’s daughter, Izzy (Ella Rubin, “The Chair”), is older than in the book, the pair still encounter a fair bit of awkwardness regarding Solène’s famous young love, who is closer to her daughter’s age than her own.
Of course, it doesn’t help matters that Hayes, as the lead singer of the uber-popular boy band August Moon, constantly draws attention to his and Solène’s relationship just by being insanely famous.
Joining Hathaway, Galitzine and Rubin in “The Idea of You” are Reid Scott (“Veep”), Annie Mumolo (“Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” 2021), Perry Mattfeld (“In the Dark”), Jordan Aaron Hall (“Rustin,” 2023), Cheech Manohar (“Mrs. Fletcher”) and new talent Mathilda Gianopoulos, who is the daughter of ‘80s rom-com legend Molly Ringwald (“Sixteen Candles,” 1984) and American author and editor Panio Gianopoulos. Irish talk show host Graham Norton (“The Graham Norton Show”) also makes an appearance in “The Idea of You,” starring as himself.
Don’t miss the opportunity to catch this love story for all ages — or at least those between the ages of 23 and 40 — when “The Idea of You” makes its streaming premiere Thursday, May 2, on Prime Video.
Nicholas Galitzine and Anne Hathaway in “The Idea of You”
The STREAM Scene
“The Idea of You” (May 2)
Based on the novel by Robinne Lee, this rom-com centers on Solène (Anne Hathaway, “Les Misérables”), a 40-year-old single mom. When Solène must step in to chaperone her teenage daughter’s (Ella Rubin, “The Chair”) trip to the Coachella Music Festival at the last minute, she has a chance encounter with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine, “Purple Hearts”), the lead singer of August Moon — the hottest boy band on the planet — and there is an instant, undeniable spark. As they begin a whirlwind romance, it isn’t long before Hayes’ superstar status poses unavoidable challenges to their relationship.
“The Veil” (April 30)
This FX series explores the surprising and fraught relationship between two women who play a deadly game of truth and lies on the road from Istanbul to Paris and London. One woman (Yumna Marwan, “Little Birds”) has a secret, the other (Elisabeth Moss, “The Handmaid’s Tale”) a mission to reveal it before thousands of lives are lost. In the shadows, mission controllers at the CIA and French DGSE must put differences aside and work together to avert potential disaster.
Where all the top choices can be found in one place!
“Fiasco” (April 30)
Raphaël Valande (Pierre Niney, “Frantz,” 2016) is revved up and ready to shoot his directorial debut — a tribute to his grandmother — but when things start to go wrong on set, his dream job turns into a nightmare, which leaves Raphaël to wonder if a member of the team is trying to sabotage his career. Created, written and directed by Igor Gotesman (“Two Is a Family,” 2016), this French comedy television series premieres with three episodes, also starring François Civil (“Frank,” 2014) and Marie-Christine Barrault (“My Night at Maud’s,” 1969).
“Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” (May 4, Limited Series Premiere)
The force is with Star Wars fans once again. Lucasfilm’s new animated follow-up series to “Tales of the Jedi” acts as the second installment of the “Tales” series. This six-episode miniseries adventures “into the fearsome Galactic Empire through the eyes of two warriors on divergent paths, set during different eras” (per Disney+), as Morgan Elsbeth (voiced by Diana Lee Inosanto, “Ahsoka”) has lost everything, and is now heading down a path of vengeance. Meanwhile, former Jedi Barriss Offee (Meredith Salenger, “The Prank,” 2022) does whatever it takes to survive in their rapidly changing galaxy.

“Dark Matter” (Apple TV+ — May 8, Series Premiere) Based on the acclaimed sci-fi novel “Dark Matter” by Blake Crouch, this thriller series follows Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton), a physicist, professor and family man who one night, while walking home on the streets of Chicago, is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.
Though Season 2 of the series led by Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool,” 2016) and Rob

The series, which follows Reynolds and McElhenney’s stewardship of the Wrexham football club, located in North East Wales, last saw the duo and the Red Dragons returning to the English Football League following an arduous battle to be promoted from the National League, and will now continue as the team begins its first return season in the EFL.
Before the (official) games begin, Season 3’s premiere episode follows Wrexham AFC and their stalwart captains as they head to America to play a series of summer friendlies. Their return to the league, however, is met with a less-than-friendly welcome from other teams, adding to the team’s already-mounting pressure. With new players taking to the pitch and a shocking departure to boot, Wrexham, Rob and Ryan all struggle to find their footing in the big leagues but do their best to train, improve and assimilate throughout the season.
As FX describes it, “Dedicated staff and supporters hold on to the dream of returning the team and town to glory while bracing for the new-found challenges that fame has brought to their small community,” as the upcoming season will prove a balancing act for all.

Selena and BFF Raquelle taste the town in ‘Selena + Restaurant’
With six episodes and plenty of good eats, Selena Gomez (“Selena + Chef”) takes on a super-size culinary challenge in “Selena + Restaurant,” premiering Thursday, May 2, on Food Network.
Leaving her home kitchen behind and taking on the culinary world by storm, superstar multi-hyphenate Selena is ready to take on the professional kitchens of LA’s hottest restaurants, accompanied by none other than her lifelong best friend, Raquelle Stevens (“Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me”).
As she travels from place to place, Selena’s skills will be put to the test by the best in the business, as guest chefs “will teach and test Selena to see how quickly she can learn the ropes with the ultimate goal of creating a dish good enough to make each restaurant’s menu,” Food Network claims.
During this inaugural season, the “besties” will be joined by the likes of Shirley Chung (“Tournament of Champions”), Stephanie Izard (“Guy’s Grocery Games: All-Star Invitational”), Wolfgang Puck (“Food Network Star”) and more, with each guest chef also highlighting a charity that is meaningful to them. Better yet, all of the featured non-profits receive a donation to further their cause.
In a series description, the network shared that “Selena + Restaurant” will kick off as Selena and Raquelle visit chef Wolfgang Puck’s Beverly Hills restaurant, CUT Steakhouse. “Thrown straight into the fire,” they say, “Selena must pass an initial test and master one of Wolfgang’s classic dishes before creating her take on a spicy seafood dish in a bid to have it placed on the menu.”
The description continues: “Then, it’s off to the kitchen of Los Angeles Dumpling Queen Shirley Chung, who welcomes Selena into her restaurant, Ms. Chi, where the two make a fusion version of a beloved dish from Selena’s childhood. Selena, Ra-
bestof ...
quelle and Shirley fold dumplings and dance around the kitchen as Selena attempts to deliver a dish good enough to make the menu.”
From spotting stars at the Hollywood hotspot Lemon Grove, to chowing down on Texas barbecue at Moo’s Craft Barbecue, to savoring soul food at Keith Corbin’s Alta, the duo won’t stop until their taste buds are fully satiated and their culinary talents are thoroughly honed.
“After cooking mostly virtually from my kitchen with some of the best chefs for the last four years, I was thrilled to step into their world,” said Gomez. “You’ll have to see if being in person helped my skills at all.” The journey begins, as “Selena + Restaurant” premieres Thursday, May 2, on Food Network.

BEST STEVE MARTIN MOVIES
in
“The Jerk” (1979): Under Carl Reiner’s direction, Martin breaks into movie stardom in a big way as a homebound simpleton who inadvertently becomes a worldly tycoon.
“Pennies From Heaven” (1981): Many Martin fans were surprised by the relative darkness of this musical, based in a BBC drama and casting him as a Depression-era peddler of tunes, but it’s grown a devoted following.
“Three Amigos!” (1986): Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short play actors who become a cut-rate “Magnificent Seven” to save oppressed Mexican villagers.
“Roxanne” (1987): This clever update of “Cyrano de Bergerac” casts Martin (who also wrote the screenplay) as a long-nosed fire chief who courts a woman (Daryl Hannah) via one of his team members (Rick Rossovich).
“Planes, Trains and Automobiles” (1987): Relatively few Thanksgiving movies are classics, but John Hughes’ comedy pairing Martin and John Candy is one of them.
“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” (1988): Martin and Michael Caine make a great team as con men who compete over an heiress (Glenne Headly) and her money.
“Bowfinger” (1999): A terrific Martin plays the calculating title filmmaker, who decides to shoot a movie without its star’s (Eddie Murphy) knowledge.
“Cheaper by the Dozen” (2003): Martin still makes a warm father figure in this remake of the true tale of a large family.
“Shopgirl” (2005): In an adaptation of his novel, Martin is affecting as the wealthy older man who vies with a slacker (Jason Schwartzman) for the heart of said shopgirl (Claire Danes).
“It’s Complicated” (2009): An absolutely charming Martin makes a real option for a divorcee’s (Meryl Streep) affections while her ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) also courts her anew.
