Geoffrey Rush plays the older Albert Einstein in “Genius,” premiering Tuesday on National Geographic.

BY JAY BOBBIN
N o one is likely to quibble with “Genius” being the title of a drama series about Albert Einstein.
Based on Walter Isaacson’s book “Einstein: His Life and Universe,” the program –with executive producers including Oscar winners Ron Howard, who makes his scripted-television directorial debut with the first episode, and Brian Grazer – premieres Tuesday, April 25, as National Geographic’s first-ever scripted show. Fellow Academy Award recipient Geoffrey Rush (“Shine”) and Johnny Flynn (“Song One”) share the role of Einstein at different ages, with the teleplay first focusing on the physics student’s teen years.
The start of World War I and, as one might expect, Einstein’s theory of relativity are destined
to have major impacts on his life ... as are his complex personal ties, including his marriage to his cousin, as well as his second wife, Elsa (played by Emily Watson, who worked with Flynn in his first movie, “Crusade in Jeans”). When he relocates from Europe to America, Einstein gains an enemy in FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover (“Grey’s Anatomy” alum T.R. Knight) during the era when Adolf Hitler becomes an international concern, including to Einstein.
“We (conferred) on Skype,” Rush reports of matching his performance to Flynn’s, “because I was in Melbourne, in preparation, and he was working in London. Then I went to London and we hung out together, and we did a lot of chatting about being doppelgangers. He plays 16 quite convincingly, up
until about the mid 30s ... then I rather dangerously take over, from the early 40s until Einstein was in his mid-70s.”
“We had the same dialect coach who was working with us,” Flynn adds, “and that, I think, was a huge help because Geoffrey had worked with her before. She was a medium for us to communicate and get a sense of this person physically and vocally, and kind of combine our ideas.”
Howard deems National Geographic –which is debuting the filmed-in-Prague “Genius” globally in 171 countries – “the perfect home and platform for it, and it suggested some things that I thought were very important and set the bar very high. National Geographic stands for integrity and authenticity. It tells us stories in a comprehensive

way, and yet is riveting and very, very engrossing. And, last but not least, it’s always visually compelling and fascinating and immersive. These are all important goals to try to set, for not just the first hour, but in the series.
“I really wanted it to be a psychological study,” notes Howard, “so I felt that as much as we could, (we should) use Einstein’s perspective on the world, and also the key people, particularly the women in his life and their perspectives on him. These were sort of the two pulls that I kept working off of visually and then, in that immersive way, tried to be as visual as we could. We have a fantastic cinematographer (Mathias Herndl), and it suggested a lot of strong imagery, which was exciting to work with.”
‘THE DEFENDERS’ HAS A HILARIOUS NEW SNEAK PEEK
Netflix’s superhero sagas are all coming together this year for the first season of “The Defenders.”
In a new super short sneak peek at the series, the four Defenders can be seen taking an awkward elevator ride together. Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Danny Rand (Finn Jones) and Luke Cage (Mike Colter) all seem content to lounge around, but Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) finds the camera recording their ride and predictably punches it out.
Not much to go on there, but we do have a few clues to dissect.
The camera feed says “Midland Circle Security,” which is illuminating in and of itself. Remember that huge hole in the ground Matt found in Season 2 of “Daredevil”? The one The Hand had dug in the
middle of New York City for some reason? That construction site had the Midland Circle brand on it, meaning the Defenders are likely setting up to go hand to hand (sorry, we had to) with these guys in Season 1.
We also can’t help but notice that Matt isn’t wearing his snazzy Daredevil suit. He’s wearing the “Daredevil” Season 1 rag over his face with a rumpled suit – a.k.a his everyday look.
Did the other Defenders just grab him outside the courthouse to go Hand hunting? Does that mean they already know his secret identity? Whatever the case, we seriously cannot wait for this show to drop on Netflix to answer all our burning questions.
“The Defenders” premieres August 18, 2017 at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT on Netflix.

Jack Maxwell drinks it all in on Travel Channel’s ‘Booze Traveler: Best Bars’
Everyone has their own idea of what makes a great bar. It could be the inviting atmosphere, the triple-digit selection of beer, the quirky but friendly clientele or maybe a soothing waterfront location. Or something else. Or none of the above.
Whatever the case, Jack Maxwell goes on a crosscountry pub crawl to get a handle on the question of great bars and what makes them so in his new Travel Channel series “Booze Traveler: Best Bars,” premiering Monday, April 24.
“That’s so subjective,” he says, “but you look at top-10 lists, we talk to people, we go online, we talk to people in that city because a lot of things encompass a best bar, of course. But it’s just like flavors of ice cream. People will have their favorites.”
Each of the 12 half-hour episodes (two each Monday night) looks at a single category, be it biker bars, bars with a view, game bars, haunted bars, dockside bars and repurposed bars. There are also two destination episodes in Maui and Aspen, Colo.
In the Monday’s opener, Maxwell surveys dockside bars in Baltimore, Florida and the San Francisco Bay area, the last a stop in Sausalito to check out the Trident, a bayfront establishment with an interesting history.
“That is where the tequila sunrise was invented,” Maxwell notes. “The story is the Rolling Stones come in – Keith Richards, Mick Jagger – looking for a drink. They want something with tequila. The bartender slings something together and it becomes the tequila sunrise. And then of course, Otis Redding’s hit song ‘Dock of the Bay’ ... he played right there on the dock because that was the view that inspired him.”

What book are you currently reading?
“Well, I just cracked open ‘Moveable Feast’ by Hemingway. ... It’s about his time in Paris in the ’20s and it’s a nice, really, retrospective considering what happened and how he ended up killing himself in Idaho. And so it’s nice to remember the happy times and what inspired him and his friendships with some of the great writers. It was nice. Paris was a happy time then, it was before the war, it was a great place with all these salons and great thinkers and all of that, so I thought it would be a nice tribute to Papa.”
What did you have for dinner last night?
“I had baked cod tongue and mashed potatoes because that’s a delicacy in Norway.”
What is your next project?
“We just started Season 4 of ‘Booze Traveler’ and we wrapped Season 1 of ‘Best Bars.’ And we’ll be busy with ‘Booze Traveler’ now until the end of the year, like November.”

It’s a good bet that this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner will be unlike any other, in some key ways.
For one thing, it will be missing a traditional guest: the President of the United States.
Given the generally contentious relationship he’s had with the press during his political career to date, it probably wasn’t a surprise in February when President Donald Trump tweeted (also not a surprise) that he would not attend the Washington, D.C., event known to some as the “Nerd Prom.” No White House staff members are expected, either. That automatically will guarantee a difference when political journalists gather on Saturday, April 29, with C-SPAN providing the coverage of the arrivals and the dinner that it has offered annually since 1993. (Cable news networks such as CNN and Fox News Channel typically dip in and out of the occasion during the evening.)
The organization’s Web site (http://www.whca.net) is marked by photos of a beaming and laughing President Barack Obama on the dinner’s dais, plus images of former First Lady Michelle Obama warmly greeting winners of the scholarships presented by the group. Those honors – which the proceeds from the dinner help to fund – still will be presented this year, along with awards to professional reporters, though possibly in a more subdued way. Famed Watergate reporters

Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein are slated to speak.
“The Daily Show’s” Hasan Minhaj is scheduled to supply the entertainment to be included at the dinner, maintaining the tradition of a comedian who would precede the President, who usually would get into the spirit of the event. Obama went to the extent of having preproduced, humorous videos made, while George W. Bush brought someone to impersonate and allegedly “translate” him (the late comic actor Steve Bridges) one year. Last year, writer-producer and former “Nightly Show” host Larry Wilmore was the featured entertainer. He was preceded by “Saturday Night Live” alumni Cecily Strong (one of the few women to have had the spot) and Seth Meyers, as well as Joel McHale, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, Wanda Sykes, Craig Ferguson, Stephen Colbert and (three times) Jay Leno. Invariably, those who got the job knew they’d be in for criticism afterward, either for going too hard or being too soft politically.

What has the ongoing impact of being in “Prison Break” been for you?
I will say that when people stop me to talk about work I’ve been in, two out of three times, it’s probably “Prison Break” ... which is remarkable given that, you know, “The Walking Dead” is still on the air. This is a show that seems to have a longevity in people’s imagination, and when they talk to me about it, it really means something to them.
There’s the economics of it all, which are important, and we all work for people who are trying to make
money. But I think, from a lot of our perspectives, it’s a real honor to have people approach you with that kind of a thing and kind of give you that piece of who they are and want to share that with you. So to return to that, and try and take care of it, I think that’s probably a big motivation on our end (to do the current continuation).
What has the comfort level been like in reuniting with so many other original “Prison Break” stars?
One of the challenges at the beginning of a new project is trying to figure out the relationships you have with all the characters, what your history is, so that there’s some authenticity there. There’s a lot of history here. When we started this ... I mean, marriages, children, coming out, politics changing, we’ve moved (on). Everybody’s life, I think, is monumentally different. And in some form, we’ve seen that through together.
I think that brings a texture and an immediacy to those relationships that I guess some actors can fake. I, apparently, am not good enough to be one of them. There was something about doing these scenes – I mean, my very first scene was with Dom (Dominic Purcell), and there’s just a decade there. And that’s kind of irreplaceable.

Chelsea Handler of “Chelsea” on Netflix
“I watch ‘Homeland,’ I watch ‘The Crown,’ I watch ‘Game of Thrones,’ I watch Bill Maher, I watch ‘Girls.’ Basically everything on HBO (laughs).”

Terry Crews of “Brooklyn NineNine” on Fox
“I always watch me ... so it’s always ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’! But other than that, it’s ‘Saturday Night Live.’ I always record it, and some shows are better than others, but it’s required viewing for me because it’s so topical.”

Penelope Ann Miller of “New York Prison Break: The Seduction of Joyce Mitchell” on Lifetime
“I really loved ‘The Crown.’ I like those sorts of ‘event’ shows, and I love period pieces because I’m a big fan of history. I have to say that I watch ‘Survivor,’ though I’m not supposed to watch reality shows because I’m an actor. And I do watch ‘American Crime’ (the first season of which featured Miller).”

Erin Napier of “Home Town” on HGTV

“We like to watch shows 10 years after they go off the air (laughs). ... I think that our favorite, ‘Friday Night Lights’ was a big one. We really loved it. And I’m a sucker for ‘House Hunters.’ If it’s on, I’m watching it. I’m nosy, I’ve got to know what those houses are like inside and how people live all over the world.”

The 2017 NFL Draft begins Thursday, April 27 on ESPN and the NFL Network. As draft day approaches, numerous prognosticators are weighing in on who is going where, and when. Trying to guess where running backs like LSU’s Leonard Fournette will land is nearly impossible. Many predict he’ll be among the top ten players drafted.
Fournette, who enters the draft as a Junior, came into the college game with big expectations as a twotime High School All-American. He committed to LSU in Baton Rouge not far from his hometown of New Orleans. After managing over 1,000 yards his freshman year in 2014, he had a breakout sophomore season, setting single-season school records with 1,953 rushing yards and 22 rushing touchdowns. His 162.8 average yards per game was the best in college football that season. Injuries plagued Fournette’s junior season in 2016 to the point where he even passed on playing in the Citrus Bowl, opting instead to enter the NFL draft and focusing on his workouts.
As for the NFL Draft, some experts predict Florida State’s Dalvin Cook to be selected ahead of Fournette at the running back position. Still, drafting a back remains a gamble. This, regardless of the production of running backs like Ezekiel Elliott, who had a brilliant rookie season in Dallas as the fourth overall pick, or Todd Gurley who went at No. 10 to the Rams in 2015. It comes down to how bad a team needs a running back and if they’re willing to risk a high pick to take one.

One look at Donal Logue’s IMDb page reveals a versatile actor who has never wanted for work. In fact, with nearly 100 film and TV credits since 1990, one might say he’s overworked.
But there was a time not long ago when the 51-year-old Ottawa-born, Southern California-raised actor considered what he’d do if that next phone call didn’t come. So like a lot of folks, he started thinking about other careers.
“A little of it was job insurance,” says Logue, who co-stars as Detective Harvey Bullock on the Fox Monday DC Comics drama “Gotham,” “this notion that maybe – who knows? – it’s a strange career, it’s a strange industry and sometimes you don’t feel like you can’t make that many proactive choices. You’re waiting to see if you’re still kind of cool or not in that universe.”
Since childhood, he had a fascination with trucks and trucking. When he was young he and his cousin drove trucks for his father, the president of a microchip company, and made runs to Los Angeles and the Mexican border. So after his FX series “Terriers” was canceled in 2010, Logue decided to get his Class-A CDL license and start driving. Today he owns his own trucking and hardwood companies, while his acting career continues to thrive.
Needless to say, he has the utmost respect for truckers.
“You’re dealing with a massive vehicle, an 85,000-pound weight, in mountain passes, ice storms,” he says. “It’s scary stuff and you’re constantly aware, too, of what your vehicle can do to others if they make stupid moves. ... So you always have to be super on-point. It’s not for the faint-hearted.”

Favorite book: “I think the books that probably had the most impact on my life were ‘Ulysses,’ ‘The Sound and the Fury’ and ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.’ ”

BY GEORGE DICKIE

Favorite movie: “I would say ‘My Name Is Joe,’ the Ken Loach movie; ‘Billy Liar’ – John Schlesinger; ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ – and Peter O’Toole just being Peter O’Toole, is so amazing; and probably ‘The Deer Hunter’ – it’s just unbelievable. The performances are just so out-of-thisworld. You know, when you see ‘The Deer Hunter’ and you’re a young actor, you’re like, ‘Man, that’s what I want to get into.’ ... It’s an emotional journey. It definitely takes it out of you. It’s thrilling and it’s exhausting at the same time.”
“The Handmaid’s Tale,” www.hulu.com/the-handmaids-tale
Based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, this drama takes place in a dystopian nearfuture, where female infertility is rampant and the few that can conceive are forced into sexual servitude in a desperate attempt to repopulate the totalitarian state of Gilead. It is in this world that Offred (Elisabeth Moss, “Mad Men”), one of these handmaids, goes to work for the Commander (Joseph Fiennes, “Shakespeare in
Love”) and his wife, Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski, “Chuck”).
“Dear White People,” www.netflix.com/title/80095698
Based on the 2014 independent film of the same title, this satirical 10-episode series is set at a predominantly white Ivy League college where racial tensions are swept under the rug and students of color are left to make their own way. Justin Simien, who financed the original film with a crowd-funded campaign and his tax return,
wrote the series and directed the first episode.

SUNDAY
9 p.m. on FX
Feud: Bette and Joan
Season 1 of this critically acclaimed — and let’s admit, insanely entertaining — anthology series wraps with “You Mean All This Time We Could Have Been Friends?,” a poignant episode that echoes one of Baby Jane Hudson’s lines for its title. Before fadeout, Joan (Jessica Lange) accepts a leading role on a new film despite increasingly serious health issues. Meanwhile, faced with a new rival, Bette (Susan Sarandon) reflects on the manufactured feud into which she and Joan allowed others to thrust them.
9 p.m. on HBO Silicon Valley
The Emmy-winning comedy opens Season 4 with “Success Failure,” which finds the core characters struggling to find funding for the Pied Piper video-chat app, which is enjoying an exploding user base in spite of the clickfarm scandal of last season. At Hooli, Gavin (Matt Ross) draws a line in the sand after Jack (Stephen Tobolowsky) steps on his toes. Meanwhile, Richard (Thomas Middleditch), who still thinks his algorithm should be put to better use, gets invaluable advice from an unexpected source.
9:02 p.m. on LIFE
Mary Kills People
Dr. Mary Harris (Caroline Dhavernas, “Hannibal”), an emergency room physician, is forced to walk a tricky ethical line between what she knows is morally right and what she also knows is illegal as she moonlights covertly as an angel of death, offering assistance to suffering patients who want to end their lives on their own terms. Jay Ryan (‘Beauty and the Beast”), Richard Short (“Vinyl”), Lyriq Bent (“Shoot the Messenger”) and Greg Bryk (“Bitten”) also star in this new drama series.
7 p.m. on KOKI
Gotham
Riddle me this: The series returns for the home stretch of its third season with the new episode “Heroes Rise: How the Riddler Got His Name.” That villainous alias finally is assumed by Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) as he goes off on his own, apart from Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), and causes problems for Bullock and Lucius Fox (Donal Logue, Chris Chalk). Gordon (Ben McKenzie) learns troubling information about his father’s fate. James Remar guest stars.
9 p.m. on A&E Bates Motel
After five chilling seasons, this masterfully written and acted prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” comes to a close with a series finale called “The Cord,” doubtless a reference to the dysfunctional bond between Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga). A&E is revealing almost nothing about this hour apart from a terse four-word story line: “Norman Bates comes home.” Even so, there’s a good chance you may sleep a little more fitfully after watching this.
9 p.m. on AMC Better Call Saul
Over the objections of a severely dismayed Kim (Rhea Seehorn), Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) decides to accept the case of a decidedly controversial new client in the new episode “Sunk Costs.” Elsewhere, Mike (Jonathan Banks) has a meeting with a powerful new ally who makes him an offer he just may not be able to refuse.
9:01 p.m. on KJRH Taken
The team gets wind of potential interference with their transfer of Meija (guest star Romano Ozari) to the FBI in the new episode “Gone.” Mills (Clive Standen) doesn’t want to hand him over in the first place, and he gets help from John and Rem (Gaius Charles, James Landry Hebert) in trying to circumvent that. Asha (Brooklyn Sudano) discovers who Elena (guest star Layla Alizada) really is. Jennifer Beals, Michael Irby and Monique Gabriela Curnen also star.
TUESDAY
8 p.m. on KJRH Great News
Executive-produced by “30 Rock” veterans Tracey Wigfield (also the creator here), Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, this new sitcom is both another
television-workplace saga and a mother-daughter tale. The “Pilot” presents Briga Heelan (“Ground Floor”) as a news producer alarmed that her new intern is — her mom (Andrea Martin, “SCTV”). John Michael Higgins and Nicole Richie costar as program co-hosts, with Horatio Sanz also featured. Another episode follows.
8 p.m. on KOKI Prison Break
As they make one last bid to escape from Ogygia, Michael, Whip and Ja (Wentworth Miller, Augustus Prew, Rick Yune) make a dangerous deal in the new episode “The Prisoner’s Dilemma.” Lincoln (Dominic Purcell) does what he can to assist them. T-Bag (Robert Knepper) seeks more information on Michael from Kellerman (Paul Adelstein). Sarah Wayne Callies, Amaury Nolasco, Rockmond Dunbar and Mark Feuerstein also star.
9 p.m. on SYFY Cosplay Melee
Season 1 ends with a finale called “Animelee,” which challenges its competitors to create an original character inspired by their favorite anime. Sounds almost too simple, right? But as a rule, handing such unfettered freedom to run wild in a context they’re passionate about winds up leaving the players paralyzed by all their creative options. We’re betting you’ll see some of those here, along with other cosplayers who excitedly rise to the challenge and deliver dazzling results.
7 p.m. on KJRH Blindspot
The concept of a scavenger hunt takes on a new meaning as Jane and Weller (Jaimie Alexander, Sullivan Stapleton) participate in one in the new episode “Regard a Mere Mad Rager.” The contest is conducted by hackers, and the items to be located have a dangerous connotation. In Thailand, Shepherd (Michelle Hurd) is on a mission to a acquire a truly lethal weapon. Archie Panjabi and Ashley Johnson also star.

7 p.m. on KOKI Shots Fired
Tensions spill over as citizens and the police get caught up in rioting in the new “Hour 6: The Fire This Time.” Ashe and Preston (Sanaa Lathan, Stephan James) have more questions for Governor Eamons (Helen Hunt) about Joey’s death, but they also take separate paths ... Ashe with Javier (guest star Angel Bonanni), and Preston with Beck (Mack Wilds). Stephen Moyer, Will Patton, Aisha Hinds and Richard Dreyfuss also star.
9 p.m. on KOTV Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders
The methods of the International Response Team have gone relatively unquestioned since this spinoff series began, but that changes in the new episode “Blowback.” A suspect dies while Garrett (Gary Sinise) and his colleagues are on a case in Kurjikistan, leading to a probe by an FBI deputy director (guest star Jim Beaver). Alana De La Garza, Daniel Henney, Annie Funke and Tyler James Williams also star.
8 p.m. on KOKI Kicking & Screaming “Survival of the Fittest” is an appropriate title for the competition’s season finale, with the teams facing an elimination challenge that will reduce the number of remaining duos from three to two before the hour is very old. Then, the participants still on hand reflect on the experiences they’ve had in the contest as they prepare to go into the final showdown. Hannah Simone (“New Girl”) is the host.
8 p.m. on KQCW Riverdale
As if Betty (Lili Reinhart) doesn’t have enough to be concerned about with homecoming weekend, Alice (Madchen Amick) wants her to probe the Blossoms in the new “Chapter Eleven: To Riverdale and Back Again.” Archie and Veronica (KJ Apa, Camila Mendes) also are involved in the mission. Jughead (Cole Sprouse) mulls cutting his father (guest star Skeet Ulrich) a break. Fred (Luke Perry) has second thoughts about divorcing Mary (guest star Molly Ringwald).
8 p.m. on HIST
Swamp People
Troy has a confrontation with Chase about his apparent obsession with sniping alligators in the new episode “Time’s Running Out.” Elsewhere, Joey

goes after his own white whale, and Willie’s buyer threatens to close early. Meanwhile, Frenchy and Gee try to fill their last tags with big-money beasts.
8 p.m. on LIFE
Married at First Sight
In the new episode “The Wedding Night,” after marrying as complete strangers, the newlyweds are alone for the very first time on the night of their nuptials. The question to be resolved is whether their one-day-old personal chemistry is strong enough to motivate them to consummate their union already.
FRIDAY
6 p.m. on TLC
Girl Starter
Eight young women from across the United States compete for a chance to start their own business through a series of challenges in this new unscripted series, which cocreator Jeannine Shao-Collins describes as a hybrid of “Shark Tank,” “Project Runway,” “The Apprentice” and similar reality competitions. The ultimate winner of the competition receives $100,000 in cash and services to help get her business off the ground.
7 p.m. on KJRH First Dates
The title of the new episode “Should I Try to Kiss You?” may not bode well for one of the couples featured during the hour. Age is a factor in one of the situations, as is the connection between siblings who embark on a double date. Footage from the bathroom camera reveals what one person truly is thinking about how their concurrent social encounter is going. Drew Barrymore narrates the unscripted series executive-produced by Ellen DeGeneres.
8 p.m. on KOED Latin Music USA
Actor Jimmy Smits (“24: Legacy”) narrates this survey of American music that was forged from strong Latin roots. The first hour, “Bridges,”
traces the rise of Latin jazz and the surging popularity of the mambo and the cha-cha, as well as how Latin music spiced up rhythm and blues and rock ’n’ roll. Then “The Salsa Revolution” explores how New York Latinos reinvented traditional Puerto Rican styles by adding soul and jazz elements to create salsa.
7 p.m. on HBO
2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
Taped April 7 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., this two-hour special features the induction of some authentic musical masters into this esteemed body of their finest peers. This year’s inductees include progressive rock band Yes, Joan Baez, Electric Light Orchestra, Journey, Nile Rodgers, Pearl Jam and Tupac Shakur. Ballots were sent to an international voting body of more than 800 artists, historians and members of the music industry.
8 p.m. on ANPL My Cat From Hell
The hit series opens Season 8 with a new episode about Scout, a black domestic shorthair. No, wait: Scout isn’t the feline from the infernal regions, merely the victim of Caramel, her adversary, whose abuse is so relentless that poor Scout now lives inside her family’s kitchen cabinet. Her guardian hates that, especially since that means Scout won’t even come out to use the litter box.
8 p.m. on OWN Iyanla, Fix My Life
The new episode “Growing Up Jackson” finds Iyanla meeting with Taryll Jackson and his girlfriend of 10 years, who have had a rocky road during their time together. Both of them blame the traumatic death of Taryll’s superstar uncle, Michael, for triggering most of their problems, but Iyanla understandably suspects something altogether different is at the root of their problems.

“Nightcrawler” (2014): Gyllenhaal is compelling as a novice freelance cameraman who finds that crime-scene footage can translate into big payments.
“Prisoners” (2013): An intense Gyllenhaal plays a police detective trying to locate two kidnapped children while the father (Hugh Jackman) of one of the youngsters goes rogue.
“End of Watch” (2012): Gyllenhaal remakes his screen image impressively as an intense L.A. cop who runs afoul of an over-the-border cartel.
“Brothers” (2009): Gyllenhaal is strong as a missing soldier’s (Tobey Maguire) sibling who becomes involved with his sister-in-law (Natalie Portman) during the other man’s absence.
“Jarhead” (2005): Playing soldier himself, Gyllenhaal is effective as a Marine who becomes caught up in the Persian Gulf War.
“Brokeback Mountain” (2005): In what has to be deemed his milestone role to date, Gyllenhaal plays one cowboy very deeply involved with another (Heath Ledger).
“The Day After Tomorrow” (2004): The visual effects are the real stars here, but Gyllenhaal is a stalwart young hero on the run from effects of global warming in a frozen-over New York.
“Moonlight Mile” (2002): Gyllenhaal is an excellent stand-in for director Brad Silberling in the fact-based tale of survivors of a young woman lost tragically.
“The Good Girl” (2002): An impressive Gyllenhaal plays a store employee who has an affair with a married co-worker (Jennifer Aniston).
“Donnie Darko” (2001): Gyllenhaal has the title role in this cult favorite about a disturbed youth with a very unlikely “mentor.”
