A ‘Scandal’ no more

End of a ‘Scandal’: Shonda Rhimes’ drama signs off
After seven seasons of twists and turns, “Scandal” almost certainly has some tricks left up its sleeve. But it had better play them fast.
The Shonda Rhimes-created-and-produced ABC drama about the lives, loves and ... yes, scandals of power players in the nation’s capital airs its finale Thursday, April 19. Many Gladiators (or “Scandal” fans) made the series hugely popular on social media as well as television, and they’re sure to tune in to see whether crisis-management expert Olivia Pope (played by Kerry Washington) gets to live happily ever after. And that easily could go either way.
Expectedly, the last story’s details have been kept under wraps. Still, certain to get their last “Scandal”-ous hurrahs are Washington’s fellow cast regulars Tony Goldwyn, Bellamy Young, Jeff Perry, Katie Lowes, Darby Stanchfield, Guillermo Diaz, Joshua Malina, Scott Foley, Cornelius Smith Jr., George Newbern – and Joe Morton, who won an Emmy Award as Olivia’s duplicitous, espionage-drenched father Eli.
“What’s great about knowing the series is going to end is that we don’t have to worry about being picked up,” reasons Morton, who also directed one of the last “Scandal” episodes. “People have been very effusive about saying how much they love the show, and how sad they are to see it go away, and that’s a good feeling as well. I think we
want to go out on top, as opposed to being one of those shows where people say, ‘It used to be so good!’ ”
Having portrayed one of “Scandal’s” most shifting – and, for that matter, shifty –characters, Morton has enjoyed the curveballs the series frequently has thrown at him: “Our reactions at table reads have probably been the same as the audience’s reactions ... people yelling and screaming and pointing and crying or whatever. We’ve gotten to experience what the audience has, and then we’ve gone back to work.”
The conclusion of “Scandal” is directed, as more than 20 of its other episodes have been, by Tom Verica. He’s an executive producer of the show and a longtime Rhimes associate now on the staff of her new ABC law drama “For the People”; he also played the now-late Sam Keating on her “How to Get Away With Murder.”
“It’s kind of bittersweet,” Verica allows of doing much to wrap “Scandal” up. “Even though I’m working on ‘For the People’ now, part of the deal early on between Shonda and myself was for me to go back and direct the finale of ‘Scandal.’ Though I was looking forward to it, I also was lamenting it a bit, because I knew it would be the last one. That is quite a family that’s been assembled there. They’re all my friends, but it’s the end of an era.”

How do you like Morgan’s new surroundings on “Fear the Walking Dead”?
I’m getting used to it. In all honesty, I had a week between locations and a week between shows, so I came off of the back of seven months in Atlanta doing “The Walking Dead” to come to Austin. And so at the moment, the divide between the two of them is a bit of a blur, but Austin has become clear to me and this new crew and this new cast, we’re
becoming firm and fast friends and family, which you have to do in these things.
Are there fewer secrets on “Fear” than on “The Walking Dead”?
You would think so, right? But certainly at this early stage, it’s as much as on “The Walking Dead” because of how Morgan joins them, at what time he joins them, who are the other characters who join around the same time that he does. You know, Maggie Grace, Garret Dillahunt, Jenna Elfman – all of them, all of the different arrivals, their secrecy, all of those where we catch up or join the existing “Fear” cast, what position they’re in – there’s just as many secrets, at this particular moment in time, as there is on “The Walking Dead.”
What has fan reaction to the character’s switch been like from your perspective?
Well, the fan reactions have run the whole gamut, to people who are disappointed to see him go. Luckily, there haven’t been any (people saying they’re glad Morgan is gone) that I’ve heard of. There may be some out there but they haven’t reached me yet, of anybody going, “Good. Good riddance. I’m glad he’s gone, I hate him. Get rid of him.” I haven’t heard any of those, but I think the overwhelming feeling has been that people understand why it might be a good thing but slightly upset that it happened, and this particular character is the one that has crossed over, as it were.

Having not done science fiction before, are you ready for the way the genre’s devotees are guaranteed to embrace you with “Lost in Space”?
I have no idea! I don’t know anything about that world, to be completely honest. It’s all new to me. I’ve never been to Comic-Con, any of that, so it’s exciting.
What’s really fun is that I have an 11-year-old son (named Will, like the son of Parker’s Maureen Robinson), and he’s so excited about this show. Finally, I’ve done something that he and his friends will get to watch and enjoy – and he knows all about that world. It’s an education, and I have a great helper.
With Dr. Smith a woman in the new “Lost in Space,” as played by Parker Posey, what’s your take on the dynamic between the two of you?
Oh, it’s so wonderful. Parker and are the same age, we came up at the same time, we both did a lot of independent film ... and I think we had dinner 25 years ago and hadn’t seen each other since.
I think she is such brilliant casting in that part, because she has great comic ability and also is a great dramatic actress. She’s interesting, and she brings a sense of fun to it. I know Parker grew up watching the (original) show and loved it, so she was thrilled to be there. We just had such a good time.

In addition to the entertainment and comedy aspect of this series, will the episodes subtly or overtly explore any social things that affect the black community?
No. Well, it’s not going to overexploit the black community, but humanity. This isn’t a black show. This is a show about humanity. This is the show about second chances. This is a show about redemption. We’re not just going black with it like that. I mean, it’s a black cast. There’s black people in it, but this is dealing with Josh and his issues and all that, the humanity. I wanted to transcend that. Black people ain’t the only ones that live here. Everybody lives here. Who are we to say others don’t matter? There are white people coming home from prison, too. So we didn’t want to deal with that like that. I wanted to deal with humanity.
No. I have production. I have my crew and I love them and they make sure I sit down. And Cedric (the Entertainer) and Al (Maldonado) and Ryan (Gaul) and Tiff (Haddish), they all sit down. ... They don’t ask me. They sit and make (me) “Sit down for a little while. Sit down.” So I’m good. I’m taken care of by my people, and I love them with my heart.
Second chances is a big theme of your life right now. What does it mean to you that you’re even able to be here, doing a whole show at this point in your life?
Obviously you’ve come from a really traumatic incident prior to filming this. What was it like physically for you? How did you deal with the actual physical demands?
What does it mean to me? ... Thank God. That’s all I’ve got to say. Self explanatory. Thank God.

PBS’ ‘Weekends With Yankee’ hits the road for more New England foodie adventures
Never let it be said that Amy Traverso doesn’t go all out for her work.
Indeed, prior to filming Season 2 of “Weekends With Yankee,” the show’s co-host and senior food editor of Yankee Magazine did a summer road trip with her family, driving the length of the Maine coast, from Kittery to Canada, along the way sampling multiple lobster rolls in search of the best one – all so you don’t have to.
Her findings can be found in the new season of the travel/culinary series, now airing on PBS stations.
“I think the joy of the lobster roll,” she says, “is that all the elements come together in a single bite. So you have the butter on the outside of the bun, you have the mayonnaise or the butter that is the sauce and you have the sweet meat, and that’s really all there is to it. So you kind of want to get all those flavors in one bite.”
And the place that she found did that the best was McLoons, an unpretentious lobster shack situated on a working wharf in South Thomaston, just below Penobscot Bay.
“They do something which is really simple but really, I think, makes a difference,” she says, “They use the mayo as a condiment. It’s spread on the inside of the bun rather than tossed with the meat. A lot of places you go, they mix it in and they let it sit for a while and then it gets mushy and tastes more like mayonnaise than anything else. So I just appreciated all those little details, all that careful thought about how to handle a lobster roll and it really pays off in the eating.”

“There’s something about the energy of Portland,” Traverso says. “I think chefs are a little bit freer to do food that’s more personal, maybe a little more experimental. Rents relative to a lot of major cities are less expensive.
“It’s an exciting place to eat and everything is of a whole,” she continues. “You have the farms feeding the restaurants and the food coming right in. And I feel like every restaurant you eat at in Portland, you know that you’re in Portland. There’s a very local identity there that appeals to me.”
