Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment in “The Sixth Sense”
‘The
Bruce Willis has had many box-office successes from overt action tales on the order of “Die Hard,” but he also had an enormous hit by playing it more subtly in “The Sixth Sense,” the 1999 melodrama that FX shows Monday, April 15. The movie also did much for the careers of young co-star Haley Joel Osment and M. Night Shyamalan, the writer-director from whom major story twists have been expected ever since.
Willis plays a psychologist working with a child (Osment) who maintains that he sees deceased people, and they behave as if they’re still among the living. The boy reminds the doctor of a previous patient (portrayed by Donnie Wahlberg) he feels enormous guilt over, so he continues to work with the youngster – and to try to communicate with the spirits himself. Toni Collette, Olivia Williams and Mischa Barton also appear in the hugely effective chiller.
When a person immigrates to the United States of America, they come with their own set of experiences, for better or — as in the case of HBO’s newest series — for worse. The new seven-episode limited series “The Sympathizer” begins Sunday, April 14, on HBO and HBO’s streaming service, Max. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Vietnamese-American professor and author Viet Thanh Nguyen, “The Sympathizer” follows a young, French-Vietnamese man (played by Hoa Xuande, “Cowboy Bebop”), who had been placed in South Vietnam for the duration of the Vietnam War, working as a plant.
As the war approaches its end in the mid-1970s, the man (hereafter referred to as “the Captain”) lands in the United States and begins to live his life as a refugee in Los Angeles. Little do those around him know, the Captain has been tasked with gaining information on the U.S. government and reporting his findings back home to the Communist-propelled Viet Cong. “I am a spy, a sleeper, a spook, a man of two faces,” says the Captain (also the narrator) at the outset of the 2015 novel and series’ source material. “Perhaps not surprisingly, I am also a man of two minds, ... able to see any issue from both sides. Sometimes I flatter myself that this is a talent ... [but] I wonder if what I have should even be called talent. After all, a talent is something you use, not something that uses you. The talent you cannot not use, the talent that possesses you — that is a hazard.”
As illustrated by the main character in the very first lines of Nguyen’s bestselling novel, duality is at the heart of “The Sympathizer.” Whether tackling the intricate moral quandaries that separate right from wrong, the complex and imperfect biases of political lefts and rights, or struggling with one’s own parentage (as is, for the Captain, a hated French father and an adored Vietnamese mother), “The Sympathizer” always straddles the line between, at least, two possible outcomes.
But if all this talk of dichotomy has you seeing double, don’t fret. You may just be seeing the same thing — or person, as the case would have it — twice. In fact, Marvel Cinematic Universe star Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man,” 2008) plays not just two roles, but four — so you could be seeing double twice!
Downey Jr., who is recognizable in at least one of his four roles, often stars in heavy prosthetics and costuming alongside up-and-comer Xuande, whose credits to date included mostly Vietnamese film and TV content until his 2021 stint as Lin in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of “Cowboy Bebop.” While very little is shared about any of Downey Jr.’s characters, a quick look at the official teasers reveals that he is largely involved in nearly every step of the well-crafted plot.
Joining Downey Jr. for “Sympathizer” star power is Canadian icon Sandra Oh, best known for her roles in ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” AMC/BBC America’s “Killing Eve” and Netflix’s “The Chair.” Oh stars as Ms. Sofia Mori, a California-born, Japanese-American secretary for Occidental College’s Department of Oriental Studies. Here she works with the Captain and finds herself drawn to him as they slowly get to know more about one another.
“The Sympathizer” also stars Duy Nguyen (“The Night Logan Woke Up”), Scott Ly (“A Tourist’s Guide to Love,” 2023), Fred Nguyen Khan (“Transplant”), Toan Le (“Simply Fobulous,” 2005), Tien Pham (“Desperate Waters,” 2019), Tom Dang (“Z Nation”), VyVy Nguyen (“Dogs in Space”), Kieu Chinh (“The Joy Luck Club,” 1993) and Kayli Tran (“Ambulance,” 2022).
more retro rewinds
“Gilligan’s Island” (MeTV, Sunday, April 14): Anyone who doesn’t know that a young Kurt Russell was a guest star in this sitcom is in for a nice surprise from the episode “Gilligan Meets Jungle Boy.” The then-future Snake Plissken of “Escape From New York” was doing a lot of TV work at the time, including his series “The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters” … and here, he plays said “jungle boy” who becomes a living project for Gilligan (Bob Denver) and the other castaways as they try to educate him in the ways of the outside world.
“The Day the Earth Stood Still” (Syfy, Sunday, April 14): A respectable remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic, this 2008 version makes smart use of Keanu Reeves’ minimalist acting style by casting him as Klaatu, an alien sent to Earth – along with a huge and fearsome robot – to get the planet’s inhabitants to stop committing environmental infractions … or else. Jennifer Connelly plays a scientist who makes a connection with the visitor, with Jaden Smith (Will’s son), John Cleese, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm and James Hong also featured.

On the clock: All-new series asks chefs to compete for 24-hours straight
Start your timers, but don’t hold your breath. Putting chefs through a once-in-a-lifetime culinary marathon, the all-new cooking-competition series, “24 in 24: Last Chef Standing,” premieres Sunday, April 14, on Food Network.
Hosted by Michael Symon (“Symon’s Dinners Cooking Out”) and Esther Choi (“Battle of the Brothers”), this supersized competition puts 24 chefs in a 24 hour, non-stop race, in which they’ll have to face 24 different cooking challenges. Dubbed by the network as their “most ambitious and grueling culinary competition to date,” Food Network describes the upcoming series as an extreme marathon demanding the skill, creativity and stamina required of elite chefs.
“This competition is as extreme as it sounds,” Symon was quoted to say. “Chefs often talk about the 24/7 nature of our industry, but this is the first competition to truly capture that intensity.”
His co-host Esther chimed in, adding: “it’s a culinary battle like no other with surprising twists and curveballs along the way. It’s a test of endurance, creativity, and collaboration that push these chefs to their limits.”
After 24 hours, endless taste-tests and a series of heartbreaking eliminations, only one true champion will be left standing — one lucky winner determined by the season’s judges: Eric Adjepong (“Alex Vs. America”), Maneet Chauhan (“Festive Cooking with Maneet”), Scott Conant (“Wildcard Kitchen”), Stephanie Izard (“Guy’s Grocery Games: All-Star Invitational”), Jet Tila (“Kitchen Lab”) and Brooke Williamson (“Beachside Brawl”), along with Bryan and Michael Voltaggio (“Battle of Brothers”). This masterful (and exhausted) chef will be awarded $50,000, the trip of a lifetime and, of course, ultimate bragging rights.
The 24 chefs in question range from Food Network stars and culinary icons to rising stars and competition “newbies,” with an impressive list of names including
bestof ...
Carlos Anthony (“Tournament of Champions”), Emilie Rose Bishop (“Guy’s Grocery Games”), Josephine Clemens (“Peeled”), Kess Eshun (“Holiday Baking Championship”), Declan Horgan (“Superchef Grudge Match”), Airis Johnson (“Beat Bobby Flay”), Camille La Caer (“Chopped”), Mika Leon (“Guy’s Grocery Games”), Chris Oh (“Tournament of Champions”), Viet Pham (“Extreme Chef”), Marc Quinones (“Cutthroat Kitchen”), Vijay Sadhu (“Cutthroat Kitchen”), Aarthi Sampath (“Tournament of Champions”), Martel Stone (“Beachside Brawl”) and Marcel Vigneron (“America’s Best Cook”), among many others.
With a hefty prize on the line — and plenty of hours on the clock — these chefs will have to prove their talent and their durability in “24 in 24: Last Chef Standing,” premiering Sunday, April 14, on Food Network.

BEST CLARK GABLE MOVIES
Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in “It Happened One Night”
“It Happened One Night” (1934): Director Frank Capra’s all-time comedy great is the prototype of the “road movie,” with an Oscar-winning Gable as a reporter pursuing a runaway heiress (Claudette Colbert, who also earned an Academy Award).
“Mutiny on the Bounty” (1935): Gable’s Fletcher Christian opposes Charles Laughton’s tyrannical Captain Bligh on the high seas in this classic saga.
“Gone With the Wind” (1939): Well, of course. It’s a movie-industry legend that the
public “demanded” that Gable play novelist Margaret Mitchell’s roguish Civil War-era hero Rhett Butler ... and the sparks he generated with Vivien Leigh’s Scarlett O’Hara has proven their wish the right one in all of the epic’s re-releases and telecasts since.
Turner Classic Movies presents it Sunday, April 14, on the exact 30th anniversary of the channel.
“The Hucksters” (1947): A war-veteran ad man (Gable) finds potential romance by enlisting a military widow (Deborah Kerr) for a campaign.
“Mogambo” (1953): This remake of Gable’s own “Red Dust” relocates the story to Kenya and makes Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly his dual love interests.
“Teacher’s Pet” (1958): Gable and Doris Day provide the star power in a romantic comedy about an incognito newspaper editor who takes a journalism professor’s class.
