Conleth Hill plays the clever Var ys in “Game of Thrones,” premiering Sunday on HBO

ys plays a mostly benign ‘Game’ in HBO’s blockbuster fantasy

“Big, bigger, biggest” seems to be the motto for the eighth and final season of “Game of Thrones,” which premieres Sunday, April 14, on HBO.

The epic fantasy blockbuster has just six more episodes in which to wrap up its sprawling stor ylines, although the last four of those will clock in at 80 minutes each instead of the usual hour’s duration.

The Season 7 finale teed up some jaw-dropping cliffhangers, including the relentless march southward by the army of the dead, led by the Night King perched atop a flying zombie-dragon.

But the other big shocker in that finale was more personal: Jon Snow (Kit Harington) was revealed to be, not the illegitimate son of Ned Stark, but a royal descendant of the Targar yen line and, as such, the true heir to the Iron Throne.

It’s a development that is sure to have headspinning implications for some of the show’s power players and under-the-radar manipulators alike, including Var ys (Conleth Hill), the cunning spymaster with a knack for moving human chess pieces to ensure the most favorable results for Westeros.

“If you notice, most of the negative things that are said about Var ys are said about him by those who don’t like him or trust him, but I always have believed he’s a good man,” Hill says. “He does his

best. He’s not as self-centered as Littlefinger was, who was both egotistical and wanted everything for his own good. I believe Var ys when he says ‘for the good of the realm,’ which he says so often it’s almost his hashtag. I’ve certainly seen nothing to contradict that.”

In a memorable Season 3 scene with Peter Dinklage’s Tyrion Lannister, Var ys revealed details about the brutal life that had taught him sur vival skills, but also the value of kindness.

“Var ys sees that kindness can be as effective as cruelty,” the actor says. “I loved a scene in Season 6, I think, where you saw him actually interrogate someone, and it was the opposite of what you may have been expecting. Instead of ‘I’m going to torture you and you’ll tell me what I want to know,’ it was ‘ Why don’t I give you lots of money and get you and your son out of here?’ He knew what appealed to people, what buttons he could push to get information that would be useful to anyone, not just himself.”

The first time he had to shave his head for this role, a colleague helped him maintain perspective.

“Ror y McCann, who plays The Hound, could tell I was unhappy and asked what was wrong,” Hill recalls. “ ‘I’ve sold my soul to HBO,’ I said. ‘Shut up and get in your Bentley,’ he told me. ”

You want to be economical, because you only have so many minutes to tell the beginning, middle and end of whatever story you’re doing. I’m always so satisfied when I watch it – I’m like, “It’s over already?” – and I think that’s what you want, especially with a comedy

That half-hour just zips by you, but even in the quiet moments, there’s so much happening.

OF ‘LIFE IN PIECES’ ON CBS

And the show has those moments, too, and I think that’s what makes it a little bit dif ferent especially for a broadcast-network comedy It can be broad and crazy and funny, but it also has really grounded moments that, just as a viewer, I think helps the show go the distance. I want to know what happens to these people.

What do you think about the future for “Life in Pieces”?

In this business, I don’t count my chickens until I’m having egg drop soup, but I can’t even stomach thinking about this show not going a few more years. It’s a really, really fantastic group.

“Breaking Bad” is such a unique program in television history, how do you reflect also having had that acting experience?

I loved playing Marie, and I still miss her and love her, but I didn’t want to keep playing her with dif ferent names. A lot of times, people have the reaction, “Oh, do that on my show, too!”

James Corden knows a lot about the Tony Awards

Q: I see that James Corden will host the Tony Awards again this year. Didn’t he win one himself? – Sue Bailey, via e-mail

A: He did, indeed for an adaptation of an Italian play that largely introduced him to American audiences, “One Man, Two Guvnors,” which he helped bring to Broadway in 2012 after performing it throughout England during 2011. Corden first hosted the Tonys in 2016 (a year after he debuted as host of “The Late Late Show”), then presided over the Grammy Awards for the two years after that.

I had never played a character who was anything like her, and I loved her great and not-so-great qualities and I embraced them all, but I felt like I did that. And I was really happy with where she got to at the end of the show.

Q: I enjoy Paul Giamatti on “Billions,” he won an Emmy for “John Adams,” when HBO repeats it every year miniseries made? – Pat Donnelly, West Palm Beach, Fla.

A: The actor played one of America’s founding fathers in 2008, and though he had been gainfully employed for more than a decade at that point – with memorable turns in such movies as “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Sideways” and “Cinderella Man,” the latter earning him an Oscar nomination – the recognition he earned as Adams put his career on another level.

Giamatti has worked virtually nonstop since, in films from “Rock of Ages” and “12 Years a Slave” to “Saving Mr Banks” and the recent, acclaimed “Private Life.” He also kept his hand in television by appearing on “Downton Abbey” and “30 Rock” and in the HBO drama “Too Big to Fail” before starting “Billions,” which now is in its fourth season.

The visuals are something straight out of food porn.

Portabellos sauteeing in a pan. Italian sausages roasting on a grill. Red sauce simmering over a low flame.

All look mouth-watering on screen and all go into dishes that have one common ingredient – cannabis.

In “Bong Appetit: Cook Off,” airing its third season Tuesdays on Viceland, the intoxicating weed takes center stage as three contestants face off in a series of cooking challenges, preparing cannabisinfused meals for judges Vanessa Lavorato, a cannabis confectioner; chef/restaurateur Miguel Trinidad and rapper/marijuana entrepreneur B-Real, who is also the show’s host.

But unlike the earthy pot brownies some may remember from their younger days, these are real, gourmet-quality meals prepared by accomplished chefs who use the many varietals of cannabis like they would any other herb to complement the other flavors in their creations.

As the meals are being prepared, the judges are actually partaking in marijuana in its smoked form, passing around a pre-meal joint or pipe before dining. That these folks can actually speak coherently to a camera afterward is amazing.

“(The smoking) relaxes me and it makes me forget that we’re making a television show and it becomes like a hangout,” Lavorato explains. “Like, ‘Oh, we’re watching these really talented chefs cook this incredible food and we’re gonna eat it.’ ”

“I mean, of course there’s the added element of like, ‘OK, how much did I eat?’ ” she adds with a

laugh, “because it takes a while to have effect but I prepped. I smoked a lot before we were filming because we shot a pilot. From the pilot, I realized I needed to increase my tolerance. It’s California (cannabis), it’s really potent and so you have to be ready So it took about a month.”

Last week’s episode saw former “The Sopranos” player Joe Gannascoli, who was a chef before he turned to acting, cooking with pot for the first time in an Italian cooking competition, which Lavorato recalls with a laugh.

“It was so much fun,” she says. “I’m Italian American so obviously that’s the food that my grandparents would make, so to make it with cannabis and then to have Joe, just made a lot of sense. ”

“When I saw him on the roster for like who was going to be competing, I was like, ‘Ah, this is going to be such a cool episode,’ because he’s such a character,” she continues. “... I mean, very talented chef, funny –we had a lot of fun having him on the show.”
