Talented Mr. Reboot: Netflix gets gritty with ‘Ripley’ remake
‘Easter Parade’ steps off again classic corner
BY JAY BOBBIN
There’s no date better than Sunday, March 31, for Turner Classic Movies to show “Easter Parade” this year, placing it right on the holiday. The channel traditionally gives a seasonal run to the 1948 musical treat that boasts an Irving Berlin score as it casts Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and Ann Miller as performers whose career choices largely are dictated by their romantic ties, past and present. Astaire plays a Broadway star whose partner both on and off the stage (Miller) is pursued for her own project, so he seeks someone to replace her, choosing a chorine (Garland) and trying to give her a makeover that will turn her into a virtual clone of the Miller character. Eventually, he lets her be herself, but matters of the heart interfere with how successful they might be … both personally and professionally. Peter Lawford also stars in the film that includes “Steppin’ Out With My Baby,” “It Only Happens When I Dance With You” and (of course) the title tune on its soundtrack.
Hollywood loves a charming sociopath, and for good reason. Divisive, morally ambiguous characters have a way of getting under the skin of the audience members and characters alike, staying within the fabric of each individual like a stubborn stain. As viewers try to sort out the motive behind the maniac, morals are called into question, boundaries are pushed and — for better or for worse — the most questionable events of the film often play on repeat in our heads.
Tom Ripley, who gives his surname to Netflix’s newest series, was first created in 1955 by thriller novelist Patricia Highsmith. While posthumously seen as somewhat of a divisive figure herself, Highsmith created Ripley to guide her would-be bestselling novel, “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” The novel spawned four sequels (published between 1970 and 1991) and grew to further acclaim in 1999, when it was adapted into the five-time Oscar-nominated feature film of the same name. Now, 69 years after Ripley’s birth, Netflix makes its mark on the classic tale.
The eight-episode thriller series, “Ripley,” premieres Thursday, April 4, on Netflix.
As those who have seen or read “The Talented Mr. Ripley” already know, the story, based in the 1960s, revolves around an enterprising but suspicious young man named Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott, “Fleabag”), who is hired by a wealthy American industrialist to find his son, Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn, “Emma,” 2020), and return him home to assume his duties in the family business. Little does the elder Mr. Greenleaf know, Ripley has little to no intention of bringing Dickie back stateside.
As Netflix puts it: “Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.”
The highly stylized, black-and-white production marks leading man Scott’s first appearance since the sold-out West End stage production of “Vanya,” a modern take on Anton Chekov’s classic “Uncle Vanya.” Scott, who rose to fame as “the hot priest” in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s series “Fleabag,” can also be seen in the 2015 James Bond film “Spectre,” 2014’s biographical dramedy “Pride” and eight episodes of the Benedict Cumberbatch-led series “Sherlock,” to name a few.
Flynn, meanwhile, plays Dickie, a spoiled young man who prefers to spend his time and money lounging at Italy’s beaches and cafes over working for the industrial empire he is tapped to inherit. Some of Flynn’s credits to date include roles as Rory Lomax in “The Dig” (2021), Dylan in the Netflix series “Lovesick” and Mr. Knightley in the 2020 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Emma,” while his most anticipated upcoming role is arguably that of late fellow actor Richard Burton (“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” 1966) in National Theatre Live’s “The Motive and the Cue” (which, like Scott’s “Vanya,” is a London-based stage production).
Joining Scott and Flynn for “Ripley” is former child star Dakota Fanning, who has made a name for herself in adulthood thanks to roles in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time ... In Hollywood” (2019), TNT’s “The Alienist” and Showtime’s “The First Lady.” In “Ripley,” Fanning portrays Marge Sherwood, Dickie’s love interest who is quick to suspect Tom of shady operations.
Eliot Sumner (“The Gentlemen,” 2019), Pasquale Esposito (“Hotel Portofino”), Maurizio Lombardi (“The Name of the Rose”) and Margherita Buy (“Mia Madre,” 2015) also star alongside Kenneth Lonergan (“White Noise,” 2022) and Ann Cusack (“Grosse Pointe Blank,” 1997).

“Fast Times at Ridgemont High” (Peacock, streaming): Cameron Crowe adapted this very funny and sometimes surprisingly sweet\ 1982 film (which Amy Heckerling directed) from his same-named book for which he went incognito at a California high school, and though certain characters here may be more like caricatures – take, for instance, surfing-minded stoner Jeff Spicoli (played by Sean Penn) – the result is enormously entertaining. Phoebe Cates, Judge Reinhold, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Forest Whitaker are among others playing students, with the great character actor Ray Walston the most notable adult as no-nonsense teacher Mr. Hand
“The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, March 31): A weekend festival of these specials continues, with such personalities as Ruth Buzzi, Jimmie Walker, Red Buttons, Foster Brooks, impressionist Rich Little and the king of ’Roast” regulars – Don Rickles – making frequent appearances on the dais. Among those who are feted during the concluding day of the marathon are Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, Lucille Ball, Michael Landon (who actually was honored at a couple of the “Roasts,” including the very last one staged), Sammy Davis Jr. and Betty White.

Ante up: Celebrity chefs bet big in after-hours culinary poker challenge
Cooking requires focus, quick thinking and talent — and so does poker. Hosted by Eric Adjepong (“Alex Vs. America”), the all-new, high-stakes cooking competition, “Wildcard Kitchen,” serves up challenges like never before, with new episodes airing Tuesdays on Food Network.
“We’re serving up our first-ever after-hours culinary poker game in [an] all-new series,” Food Network announced in a recent news release.
“In each episode,” they say, “host Eric Adjepong takes over the test kitchen after hours with an exclusive invitation for three chefs to bring $5,000 to play across three hands of his underground culinary poker game.”
“The competitors, who all know each other well, have scores to settle and personal stakes to lose as they battle to create dishes based on the cards they are dealt and bet using their own instincts and cold, hard cash. The luck of the draw determines the dishes and cooking time, while wildcards deal unpredictable challenges into the mix that test the chefs like never before. From surf and turf with peanut butter to live crab with kimchi, anything can happen in ‘Wildcard Kitchen’ as mystery guest judges use blind taste tests to determine who walks away the high roller with bragging rights and cash from their fellow chefs.”
With a novel concept and a hot pot of cash, many Food Network favorites have jumped at the opportunity to participate in this series’ inaugural season, leading to a lineup of competitors including “Chopped” judges Maneet Chauhan, Brian Malarkey and Marc Murphy; Italian cuisine masters Gabriele Bertaccini (“Ciao House”), Rocco Dispirito (“Rocco’s Dinner Party”) and Antonia Lofaso (“Cutthroat Kitchen”); and best friends Stephanie Izard (“Guy’s Grocery Games: All-Star Invitational”), Joe Sasto (“The Great Food Truck Race”) and Justin Sutherland (“Fast Foodies”).
bestof ...
who ultimately have the final say in who “rolled with the dices” the best, and who should have folded when they had the chance.
Betsy Ayala, head of content and food at Warner Bros. Discovery, said: “’Wildcard Kitchen’ makes viewers feel like they are behind the scenes for an exclusive late-night poker game with their favorite chefs. The competition and good-natured trash talk is fierce, funny and unlike anything Food Network has offered.”
Fresh, fun and flavorful, “Wildcard Kitchen” airs Tuesdays on Food Network.

BEST MARTIN SCORSESE MOVIES
Robert De Niro in “Raging Bull”
“Taxi Driver” (1976): De Niro is iconic as cabbie and vigilante Travis Bickle in Scorsese’s moody drama, which gained additional fame for a real-life action allegedly inspired by co-star Jodie Foster’s character.
“Raging Bull” (1980): De Niro nabbed an Oscar for his remarkable transformation as boxer Jake LaMotta in Scorsese’s gritty biography, also boasting superb supporting work by Joe Pesci.
“GoodFellas” (1990): Widely considered Scorsese’s masterpiece, this first-rate, fact-inspired crime drama casts Ray Liotta as a Mob novice mentored by veterans (De Niro, Pesci - who won an Oscar here as a hot-tempered lieutenant — and Paul Sorvino).
“Casino” (1995): Many key “GoodFellas” players including De Niro, Pesci and co-screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi reunited with Scorsese on this saga of Las Vegas and the Mob.
“The Aviator” (2004): Scorsese’s portrait of reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes (DiCaprio) also captures the era’s Hollywood in great detail. Cate Blanchett won an Oscar for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn.
“The Departed” (2006): Director Scorsese earned a long-elusive Oscar for this Americanization of the Hong Kong drama “Infernal Affairs,” with a cop (DiCaprio) and a mobster (Matt Damon) infiltrating each other’s spaces. Jack Nicholson contributes superb supporting work as a veteran of the Boston underworld.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” (2023): Scorsese earned his latest Oscar nomination as a director for this fact-inspired drama, again teaming him with Di Caprio and De Niro, about the conflict over oil discovered on an Oklahoma reservation.
Judging their skills will be talented guest stars Anne Burrell (“Secrets of a Restaurant Chef”), Esther Choi (“Her Name Is Chef,” 2021) and Scott Conant (“Outchef’d”),
