Mark Hamill in “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope”
The Star Wars franchise has held many surprises for its countless fans, one of which was that the first movie actually was the fourth chapter. On Saturday, March 9, FX presents the original trilogy from the George Lucas-created saga — with 1977’s “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope” introducing characters from “a galaxy far, far away” that have become only more beloved as time has gone on.
Mark Hamill (“The Fall of the House of Usher”) plays adventurous Luke Skywalker, who responds to an appeal-by-hologram from Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher, “The ‘Burbs,” 1989) as she tries to thwart the sinister Darth Vader (David Prowse of 1971’s “A Clockwork Orange”; voice by James Earl Jones, “Field of Dreams,” 1989) and his scheme to build a Death Star capable of ravaging the universe. The would-be heroes get assistance from maverick smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford, also famed for the Indiana Jones franchise) and his sidekick Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew, “Dark Towers”). Among the picture’s seven Oscars are wins for best visual effects — of course — and John Williams’s iconic music score.
Flip through the pages of your local newspaper or turn the television to your preferred news network and you’ll see it: a plethora of stories chronicling the ins and outs of national politics. Often times, the politics are related to your own nation, but in order to understand one’s own country’s goals, desires and needs, the news must also look abroad. While these news updates and articles center exclusively on real-world issues in a 24-hour news cycle context, one HBO series is going above and beyond to bring real concerns into a scripted environment.
“The Regime,” a new limited miniseries from creator Will Tracy (“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver”), takes an in-depth look at the intricacies and concerns that come hand in hand with an authoritarian government. Set in Europe and created as a peek behind the curtain of fascism in the making, “The Regime” premieres Sunday, March 3, on HBO and Max.
Previously operating under the working title “The Palace,” “The Regime” stars “Titanic” (1997) and “Mare of Easttown” actress Kate Winslet in the role of Chancellor. Although the term has often been associated with Germany, Winslet’s chancellor is the sinister and darkly comedic leader of a fictional European country. As the HBO teaser trailer illustrates, the titular regime is determined to see “a new Europe without limits [and] without cruelty,” but what that means for the regime is wildly different from what that means for its country’s people.
According to HBO, the miniseries “tells the story of a year within the palace of a modern European authoritarian regime as it unravels,” and who better to tell that story than the people behind some of the most successful business and political dramas of recent years: “Succession” and “The Crown.”
Brought to life by directors Stephen Frears (“The Queen,” 2006) and Jessica Hobbs (“The Crown”), series creator Tracy made sure to bring many talented satirists into the writers’ room with him. Helping him realize his vision for a dark and satirical political dramedy are Gary Shteyngart (“Succession”), Juli Weiner (“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver”), Jen Spyra (“Our Cartoon President”), Sarah DeLappe (“Bodies Bodies Bodies,” 2022) and Tracy’s “The Menu” (2022) co-writer, Seth Reiss.
In front of the camera, big-name stars Hugh Grant (“Love Actually,” 2003), Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie,” 2022) and Martha Plimpton (“Generation”) join Winslet. Additionally, Matthias Schoenaerts (“Red Sparrow,” 2018) and Guillaume Gallienne (“Marie Antoinette,” 2006) star in recurring roles alongside Patrick Fusco (“Quiz”), Vinodini Patel (“Wicked Little Letters,” 2023), Alasdair Hankinson (“The Lost King,” 2022), Donald Sage Mackay (“The Following Events Are Based on a Pack of Lies”) and Louie Mynett (“The Man Who Fell to Earth”).
While “The Regime” takes place in a fabricated Middle European nation, several locations in the series may look familiar to Austrian viewers, or those who have previously visited the country’s capital city of Vienna. The city, which was used as the series’ primary filming location, is filled with Baroque architecture and an old-world European vibe that provides “The Regime” with a perfect setting, complete with grandiose palaces and gardens. Chief among these edifices is Liechtenstein Garden Palace, which is reportedly the location of much of the series photography, per the German-language online newspaper, Kurier. While travelers may be taken with the backdrop, movie buffs may recognize the sardonic, over-the-top dark humor from Tracy and Reiss’s recent popular horror film, “The Menu.” A deeply critical commentary of the absurdity and pomp of the modern luxury dining experience, if “The Menu” is any indication of Tracy and Reiss’s writing style, “The Regime” is bound to be a scathing reflection of international politics.
Tune into the premiere of “The Regime” Sunday, March 3, on HBO and Max. New episodes air weekly until its anticipated April 7 finale.

“The Abyss” (Hulu, streaming): Marking its 35th anniversary, writer-director James Cameron’s 1989 adventure-drama showed the knack for underwater filmmaking that also would be a significant part of his “Titanic” eight years later. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio play maritally estranged members of a team that encounters strange phenomena while working to locate and recover a sunken submarine. Michael Biehn, who was a hero in Cameron’s “The Terminator” earlier, portrays a villain here; the film’s visual effects earned an Oscar.
“Casablanca” (Turner Classic Movies, Thursday, March 7): During a full week of best picture nominees and winners that wraps up the channel’s annual “31 Days of Oscar” festival, you must remember this one — at least if you’re a true movie lover. Humphrey Bogart is unforgettable as cynical cafe owner Rick, who has a dangerous wartime reunion with his former flame Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman). One of the most famous films ever made, the 1942 drama is packed with scenes that are immediately recognizable. Paul Henreid, Sydney Greenstreet, Claude Rains and Peter Lorre also star.

It’s go ‘thyme’: ‘MasterChef Junior’ returns with more Ramsays than ever
If you like your Ramsays sweet, not spicy, then this competition will tickle your taste buds. Season 9 of “MasterChef Junior” premieres Monday, March 4, on Fox.
On air since 2013, this series sees the softer, more encouraging side of chef extraordinaire Gordon Ramsay (“Hell’s Kitchen”) as he instructs, motivates and mentors young chefs (all between the ages of 8 and 13) to be better at their craft through increasingly difficult challenges. This season, Ramsay plans to tackle the task by sprinkling in a taste of home, inviting his daughter, Tilly Ramsay (“Matilda and the Ramsay Bunch”), 22, to join his judging panel alongside the returning Aarón Sánchez (“Chopped After Hours”) and Daphne Oz (“The Chew”).
Tilly, the fourth of Ramsay’s six children, has picked up her father’s flare for fabulous cuisine, having previously appeared in shows such as “Next Level Chef UK,” “Celebrity MasterChef Australia,” “Step Up to the Plate” and Ramsay’s own “Hell’s Kitchen,” proving that she can take the heat in the kitchen just as well as her pops. Now, before moving on to host her own series — “Dish It Out,” which is currently in pre-production — the second-generation Ramsay hopes to inspire young cooks, acting as a relatable bridge between the kid contestants and their adult mentors — not to mention, she’s always ready to shoot a few zingers back at the clever and quippy Gordon.
Featuring many of the same challenges as its predecessor (the far more intense “MasterChef”), this season
bestof ...
asks its budding chefs to face skills tests, team challenges, pressure tests, elimination rounds and more, narrowing down the competition until only two or three cooks remain. These finalists, then, go on to face each other in an extravagant, three-course cook-off. After all three rounds of judging have been completed, one overall winner is crowned, this season earning themselves $100,000, the “MasterChef Junior” trophy and the impressive title that comes with it.
Based on a format created by Franc Roddam (“Celebrity MasterChef”), this delectable, family-friendly series is produced by Endemol Shine North America and One Potato Two Potato, in hopes of encouraging aspiring young chefs across the country and offering life-changing opportunities season after season.
With all previous episodes currently streaming on Hulu, “MasterChef Junior” returns Monday, March 4, on Fox, with all-new episodes available to watch the next day on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.

BEST NEIL SIMON MOVIES
Robert Redford and Jane Fonda in “Barefoot in the Park”
“Barefoot in the Park” (1967): Jane Fonda and Robert Redford had their second of several screen teamings in Simon’s tale of newlyweds whose first apartment together challenges their temperamental differences.
“The Odd Couple” (1968): Not only did Simon score an outof-the-park movie hit with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau’s pairing as mismatched roommates Felix Ungar and Oscar Madison, it has fueled several television versions, including the 1970s Tony Randall-Jack Klugman classic.
“Plaza Suite” (1971): Simon’s frequent movie muse, Matthau has the central male role in each of the three stories set at different times in the same suite at New York’s Plaza Hotel; Maureen Stapleton, Barbara Harris and Lee Grant are his leading ladies.
“The Heartbreak Kid” (1972): The tale was adapted for a 2007 remake, but Simon’s imprint is much more on the original version, casting Charles Grodin as a newlywed who falls for another woman (Cybill Shepherd) while he’s on his honeymoon.
“The Goodbye Girl” (1977): Marsha Mason received a strong screen role from her then-husband Simon, but it was Richard Dreyfuss who won an Oscar for the film, portraying an actor thrown by circumstance into sharing a New York apartment with a single mom (Mason) and her wise-beyond-her-years daughter (Quinn Cummings).
“Seems Like Old Times” (1980): Reunited after their success in “Foul Play,” Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase star as ex-spouses, a public defender and the alleged criminal she tries to help while he’s on the run.
“Biloxi Blues” (1988): Under Mike Nichols’ direction, this middle chapter in Simon’s trilogy about the character Eugene Jerome features excellent performances by Matthew Broderick as Eugene and Christopher Walken as his colorful sergeant.
Gordon Ramsay, Tilly Ramsay, Daphne Oz and Aarón Sánchez are judges for “Masterchef Junior”
